New ether dimer (ED‐Od) and diester (ODE) derivatives of α‐hydroxymethylacrylate, each having two octadecyl side chains, were synthesized and (co)polymerized to evaluate the effects of differences in the structures of the monomers on final (co)polymer properties, particularly glass transition temperature. The free radical polymerizations of both monomers yielded high‐molecular weight polymers. Cyclopolymer formation of ED‐Od was confirmed by 13C NMR analysis and the cyclization efficiency (0.95 or greater) was found to be as high as the cyclization efficiencies of the cyclopolymerizations of ether dimers of various alkyl α‐hydroxymethylacrylates synthesized previously. Copolymers of both ED‐Od and ODE with methyl methacrylate (MMA) showed significant Tg decreases over PMMA due to octadecyl side groups causing “internal” plasticization. Comparison of the Tg's of the copolymers of octadecyl methacrylate, ED‐Od and ODE with MMA revealed that the impacts of these monomers on depression of Tg's are identical. That is, the magnitude of decrease in Tg's was quantitatively related to the number of the octadecyl side groups in the copolymers rather than their placement on the same or randomly incorporated repeat units. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluorophenyl methacrylate (TFPMA), pentafluorophenyl methacrylate (PFPMA), and 4‐trifluoromethyl‐2,3,5,6‐tetrafluorophenyl methacrylate (TFMPMA) were investigated. All the three systems showed a random copolymerization character. The composition, glass transition temperature (Tg), and refractive index of the copolymers obtained were studied. Tgs of TFPMA/MMA and PFPMA/MMA copolymers were found to deviate positively from the Gordon–Taylor equation. However, Tgs of TFMPMA/MMA copolymers were well fit with the Gordon–Taylor equation. These results indicated the existence of interaction between MMA and either TFPMA or PFPMA units in copolymers. This interaction resulted in the enhancement of the Tg of MMA polymers through the copolymerization with TFPMA and PFPMA. The refractive index and the light transmittance of copolymers were close to those of PMMA. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Fluoroalkyl methacrylates, 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate ( 1 ), hexafluoroisopropyl methacrylate ( 2 ), 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoro‐2‐methyl‐2‐propyl methacrylate ( 3 ), and perfluoro t‐butyl methacrylate ( 4 ) were synthesized. Homopolymers and copolymers of these fluoroalkyl methacrylates with methyl methacrylate (MMA) were prepared and characterized. With the exception of the copolymers of MMA and 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate ( 1 ), the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the copolymers were found to deviate positively from the Gordon‐Taylor equation. The positive deviation from the Gordon‐Taylor equation could be accounted for by the dipole–dipole intrachain interaction between the methyl ester group and the fluoroalkyl ester group of the monomer units. These Tg values of the copolymers were found to fit with the Schneider equation. The fitting parameters in the Schneider equation were calculated, and R2 values, the coefficients of determination, were almost 1.0. The refractive indices of the copolymers, measured at 532, 633, and 839 nm wavelengths, were lower than that of PMMA and showed a linear relationship with monomer composition in the copolymers. 2 and MMA have a tendency to polymerize in an alternating uniform monomer composition, resulting in less light scattering. This result suggests that the copolymer prepared with an equal molar ratio of 2 and MMA may have useful properties with applications in optical devices. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article explores the synthesis of a novel methacrylic macromonomer with an amphiphilic character derived from poly(ethylene glycol) tert‐octylphenyl ether (MT) and its respective homopolymer. To know their reactivity in radical copolymerization reactions with methyl methacrylate (MMA), a model monomer (MTm) was synthesized to determine the reactivity ratios and compare them with the low molar fractions of copolymers of MT with MMA because they were difficult to isolate. They were rMTm = 0.97 and rMMA = 0.95. The compositional diagrams when representing the weight fraction of MT and MTm in the feed and the copolymer suggested that a clear correlation exists between the experimental points of the model monomer MTm and the macromonomer MT ones, suggesting that the length of the side poly(ethylene oxide) chain does not affect the reactivity of the methacrylic double bond in the prepared monomers for this type of polymerization reaction. The reactivity ratios of the copolymers have a tendency for the formation of random or Bernoullian copolymers. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of the prepared copolymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, deviated from the Fox equation, and discussed on the basis of treatments that consider the influence of the monomeric units along the copolymer chains, determining the Tg of the corresponding alternating dyads. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. It still remains a concern to break through the bottlenecks of anionic polymerization of polar monomers, such as side reactions, low conversion and low temperature (–78°C). In this work, potassium tert‐butoxide (t‐BuOK) was chosen to initiate the anionic polymerization of 2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) in tetrahydrofuran. The conversions were above 99% at 0 or 30°C, and above 95% at 60°C without side reaction inhibitors. The high conversions implied t‐BuOK could suppress the side reactions. A series of block copolymers of EHMA, n‐hexyl methacrylate (HMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were further synthesized at 0°C, and the conversions were all above 99%. The GPC and 1H NMR results confirmed the successful synthesis of the block copolymers. The molecular size of monomer and the state of t‐BuOK (free ion pairs or aggregates) remarkably affected the polymerization rates and the molecular structures of the products. The DMA results indicated that the glass transition temperatures of PEHMA or PHMA block and PMMA block were 20°C and 60°C, respectively, which deviated from –2°C and 105°C of homopolymer, respectively, due to the partial compatibility of the blocks. This work explored a route of the anionic polymerization of polar monomers at room temperature.  相似文献

Statistical copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 2‐methacryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate (MAEFC) were prepared by free radical polymerization. The reactivity ratios were estimated using the Fineman‐Ross, inverted Fineman‐Ross, Kelen‐Tüdos, and extended Kelen‐Tüdos graphical methods. Structural parameters of the copolymers were obtained by calculating the dyad monomer sequence fractions and the mean sequence length. The glass‐transition temperature (Tg) values of the copolymers were measured and examined by means of several theoretical equations, allowing the prediction of these Tg values. The thermal degradation behavior of the copolymers was also studied and compared with the respective homopolymers. Cyclic voltammetry was employed to study the electrochemical properties of the copolymers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 2,3,4‐ and 2,4,6‐trifluorophenyl maleimides (TFPMIs) were synthesized by a free radical initiator, azobisisobutyronitrile, in 1,4‐dioxane and also in bulk. The refractive indexes of the copolymers were in the range of 1.49–1.52 at 532 nm. The Tgs were 133–195 °C depending on copolymer compositions. In addition, the copolymers were thermally stable, Td > 350 °C. The orientational and photoelastic birefringence of the copolymers were also investigated. As both of the orientational and photoelastic birefringences of PMMA are negative, whereas those of poly(TFPMI)s are positive, we could obtain nearly zero orientational and photoelastic birefringence polymers when the ratios of 2,3,4‐TFPMI/MMA were 15/85 and 5/95 mol %, respectively. For 2,4,6‐TFPMI, zero orientational and photoelastic birefringences could be obtained when the ratios of 2,4,6‐TFPMI/MMA were 12/88 and 3/97 mol %, respectively. The Tgs of those copolymers with zero birefringences were in the range of 135–140 °C. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated that gradient copolymers exhibit unique thermal properties. Although these properties can be determined by copolymer composition, other factors such as chain and sequence lengths and their distributions can also influence them. Accordingly, the synthesis of gradient copolymers requires simultaneously tailor‐made chain structure and thermal properties. In this work, we carried out a systematic study on the preparation of poly(methyl methacrylate‐grad‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) [poly(MMA‐grad‐HEMA)] with synchronously tailor‐made chain composition distribution and glass transition temperature (Tg) through semibatch atom transfer radical polymerization. First, a comprehensive model for simultaneously predicting gradient copolymer microstructure and Tg was presented using the concept of pseudo‐kinetic rate coefficients and Johnston equation. The model was validated by comparing simulation results with the classical reference data. Furthermore, the model was used to guide the experimental synthesis of the poly(MMA‐grad‐HEMA) gradient copolymers potentially as excellent damping material. The thermal properties of these gradient copolymer samples were evaluated. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

2,3,4,5,6‐Pentafluoro and 4‐trifluoromethyl 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro styrenes were readily copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) by a free radical initiator. The copolymers were soluble in tetrahydrofuran and acetone. The films obtained were transparent and flexible. The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the copolymers were found positively deviated from the Gordon–Taylor equation. The positive deviation could be accounted for by dipole–dipole intrachain interaction between the methyl ester group of MMA and the highly fluorinated aromatic moiety, which resulted in a decrease in the segmental mobility of the polymer chains and the enhanced Tg values of the copolymers. The water absorption of PMMA was greatly decreased by copolymerization of MMA with the highly fluorinated styrenes. With as little as 10 mol % of pentafluoro styrene content in the copolymer, the water absorption was decreased to one‐third of that for pure PMMA. The fluorinated styrenes‐MMA copolymers were thermally stable up to 420 °C under air and nitrogen atmospheres. With 50 mol % of MMA in the copolymer, the copolymer was still stable up to 350 °C. Since these copolymers contain a large number of fluorine atoms, the light absorption in the region of the visible to near infrared is decreased in comparison with nonfluorinated polymers. Thus, these copolymers may be suitable for application in optical devices, such as optical fibers and waveguides. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

A self‐polymerizable quinoxaline monomer (A‐B) has been synthesized and polymerized via aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions. An isomeric mixture of self‐polymerizable quinoxaline monomers—2‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐3‐phenyl‐6‐fluoroquinoxaline and 3‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐2‐phenyl‐6‐fluoroquinoxaline—was polymerized in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone (NMP) to afford high molecular weight polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ) with intrinsic viscosities up to 1.91 dL/g and a glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of 251 °C. A series of comonomers was polymerized with A‐B to form PPQ/polysulfone (PS), PPQ/polyetherether ketone (PEEK), and PPQ/polyethersulfone (PES) copolymers. The copolymers readily obtained high intrinsic viscosities when fluorine was displaced in NMP under reflux. However, single‐electron transfer (SET) side reactions, which limit molecular weight, played a more dominant role when chlorine was displaced instead of fluorine. SET side reactions were minimized in the synthesis of PPQ/PS copolymers through mild polymerization conditions in NMP for longer polymerization times. Thus, the Tg's of PES (Tg = 220 °C), PEEK (Tg = 145 °C), and PS (Tg = 195 °C) were raised through the incorporation of quinoxaline units into the polymer. Copolymers with high intrinsic viscosities resulted in all cases, except in the case of PPQ/PEEK copolymers when 4,4′‐dichlorobenzophenone was the comonomer. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Graft copolymers of poly(tulipalin A) (PT) and poly(DL‐lactide) (PDLLA) (PT‐g‐PDLLA) having various graft lengths and ratios were synthesized by free‐radical copolymerization of α‐methylene‐γ‐butyrolactone (MBL) and PDLLA macromonomers (HEMA‐PDLLA) terminated by 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)‐terminated. HEMA‐PDLLA were synthesized by ring opening polymerization (ROP) of DL‐lactide in the presence of HEMA. Both HEMA‐PDLLA and the copolymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal properties of the graft copolymers were found to depend on the graft length and the ratio. The copolymers consisting of PDLLA side chains of Mn = 500 Da showed a single Tg between Tgs of the two component polymers, suggesting a miscible state of PT and PDLLA. In contrast, the copolymers consisting of PDLLA side chains of Mn = 1100, 2000, and 7000 Da showed two isolated Tg, suggesting two segregated domains. The AFM phase images of the copolymers supported the single and phase‐separated morphologies for the former and latter systems, respectively. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Iron‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization using activators generated by electron transfer directly from the secondary fluorine atoms on the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) backbone, using methyl methacrylate (MMA) and poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) as the monomers, FeCl3·6H2O as the catalyst, PPh3 as the ligand, and vitamin C as the reducing agent, was demonstrated in the presence of limited amounts of air. The successful syntheses of the corresponding graft copolymers PVDF‐g‐PMMA and PVDF‐g‐PPEGMA were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The graft copolymers PVDF‐g‐PPEGMA can be readily cast into porous hydrophilic microfiltration membranes by phase inversion in an aqueous medium. The morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The surface and bulk hydrophilicity were evaluated on the basis of static water contact angle and the steady adsorption of bovine serum albumin. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The amphiphilic heterograft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐(poly(acrylic acid)/polystyrene) (P(MMA‐co‐BIEM)‐g‐(PAA/PS)) were synthesized successfully by the combination of single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP), single electron transfer‐nitroxide radical coupling (SET‐NRC), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) via the “grafting from” approach. First, the linear polymer backbones poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate) (P(MMA‐co‐BIEM)) were prepared by ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and subsequent esterification of the hydroxyl groups of the HEMA units with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. Then the graft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐poly(t‐butyl acrylate) (P(MMA‐co‐BIEM)‐g‐PtBA) were prepared by SET‐LRP of t‐butyl acrylate (tBA) at room temperature in the presence of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yloxyl (TEMPO), where the capping efficiency of TEMPO was so high that nearly every TEMPO trapped one polymer radicals formed by SET. Finally, the formed alkoxyamines via SET‐NRC in the main chain were used to initiate NMP of styrene and following selectively cleavage of t‐butyl esters of the PtBA side chains afforded the amphiphilic heterograft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐(poly(t‐butyl acrylate)/polystyrene) (P(MMA‐co–BIEM)‐g‐(PtBA/PS)). The self‐assembly behaviors of the amphiphilic heterograft copolymers P(MMA‐co–BIEM)‐g‐(PAA/PS) in aqueous solution were investigated by AFM and DLS, and the results demonstrated that the morphologies of the formed micelles were dependent on the grafting density. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article deals with the synthesis of hydrophilic methacrylic monomers derived from ethyl pyrrolidone [2‐ethyl‐(2‐pyrrolidone) methacrylate (EPM)] and ethyl pyrrolidine [2‐ethyl‐(2‐pyrrolidine) methacrylate (EPyM)] and their respective homopolymers. For the determination of their reactivity in radical copolymerization reactions, both monomers were copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA), the reactivity ratios being calculated by the application of linear and nonlinear mathematical methods. EPM and MMA had ratios of rEPM = 1.11 and rMMA = 0.76, and this indicated that EPM with MMA had a higher reactivity in radical copolymerization processes than vinyl pyrrolidone (VP; rVP = 0.005 and rMMA = 4.7). EPyM and MMA had reactivity ratios of rEPyM = 1.31 and rMMA = 0.92, and this implied, as for the EPM–MMA copolymers, a tendency to form random or Bernoullian copolymers. The glass‐transition temperatures of the prepared copolymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and were found to adjust to the Fox equation. Total‐conversion copolymers were prepared, and their behavior in aqueous media was found to be dependent on the copolymer composition. The swelling kinetics of the copolymers followed water transport mechanism case II, which is the most desirable kinetic behavior for a swelling controlled‐release material. Finally, the different states of water in the hydrogels—nonfreezing water, freezing bound water, and unbound freezing water—were determined by DSC and found to be dependent on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic units of the copolymers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This investigation reports the atom transfer radical copolymerization (ATRcP) of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2‐ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA). Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) has easily transformable pendant oxirane group and poly(2‐ethylhexyl acrylate) (PEHA) has very low Tg. They are the important components of coating and adhesive materials. Copolymerization of GMA and EHA was carried out in bulk and in toluene at 70 °C at different molar feed ratios using CuCl as catalyst in combination with 2,2′‐bypyridine (bpy) as well as N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyl diethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as ligand. The molecular weight (Mn) and the polydispersity index (PDI) of the polymers were determined by GPC analysis. The molar composition of the copolymers was determined by 1H NMR analysis. The reactivity ratios of GMA (r1) and EHA (r2) were determined using Finemann‐Ross and Kelen‐Tudos linearization methods and those had been compared with the literature values for conventional free radical copolymerization. The thermal properties of the copolymers were studied by DSC and TGA analysis. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 6526–6533, 2009  相似文献

n‐Butyl acrylate (BA), 2‐ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) are commonly used monomers in pressure‐sensitive adhesive formulations. The bulk free‐radical copolymerizations of BA/EHA, MMA/EHA, and BA/MMA are studied at 60 °C to demonstrate the use of copolymer reactivity ratios for the prediction of BA/MMA/EHA terpolymer composition. The reactivity ratios for BA/EHA and MMA/EHA copolymer systems are determined using low conversion experiments; BA/MMA reactivity ratios are already known from the literature. The reactivity ratio estimates for the BA/EHA system are r BA = 0.994 and r EHA = 1.621 and the estimates for MMA/EHA are r MMA = 1.496 and r EHA = 0.315. High conversion experiments are conducted to validate the reactivity ratios. The copolymer reactivity ratios are shown to predict terpolymer composition of high conversion BA/MMA/EHA experiments.  相似文献

Four well‐defined diblock copolymers and one statistical copolymer based on lauryl methacrylate (LauMA) and 2‐(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate (AEMA) were prepared using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymers were characterized in terms of molecular weights, polydispersity indices (ranging between 1.12 and 1.23) and compositions by size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy, respectively. The preparation of the block copolymers was accomplished following a two‐step methodology: First, well‐defined LauMA homopolymers were prepared by RAFT using cumyl dithiobenzoate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization of LauMA followed first‐order kinetics demonstrating the “livingness” of the RAFT process. The pLauMAs were subsequently used as macro‐CTA for the polymerization of AEMA. The glass transition (Tg) and decomposition temperatures (ranging between 200 and 300 °C) of the copolymers were determined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. The Tgs of the LauMA homopolymers were found to be around ?53 °C. Block copolymers exhibited two Tgs suggesting microphase separation in the bulk whereas the statistical copolymer presented a single Tg as expected. Furthermore, the micellization behavior of pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers was investigated in n‐hexane, a selective solvent for the LauMA block, using dynamic light scattering. pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers formed spherical micelles in dilute hexane solutions with hydrodynamic diameters ranging between 30 and 50 nm. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel copolymers composed of a styrene (St) derivative bearing a vicinal tricarbonyl moiety and various vinyl monomers such as St, methyl methacrylate (MMA), and N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) were synthesized by (1) radical copolymerization of a St derivative with a 1,3‐diketone structure with St, MMA, and NVP and (2) successive oxidation of the resulting copolymers with N‐bromosuccinimide in DMSO to convert their 1,3‐diketone moieties in the side chains into the corresponding vicinal tricarbonyl moieties. Their tricarbonyl moieties were readily hydrated in water‐containing acetone to generate the corresponding copolymers bearing geminal diol structures in the side chains. On the other hand, heating the resulting copolymers bearing the geminal diol structures in vacuo‐enabled successful recovery of the vicinal tricarbonyl moieties to demonstrate the reversible nature of this system. The hydration behavior in powdery state under air atmosphere saturated by water was also investigated. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Novel reversible networks utilizing photodimerization of crosslinkable anthracene groups and thermal dissociation were investigated. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization yielded well‐defined copolymers with 9‐anthrylmethyl methacrylate (AMMA) and other alkyl methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) having different AMMA compositions. Well‐controlled block copolymerization of AMMA and alkyl methacrylates was also successfully accomplished using a trithiocarbonate‐terminated poly(alkyl methacrylate) macro‐chain transfer agent. The anthracene‐containing copolymers showed reversibility via crosslinking based on photodimerization with ultraviolet irradiation and subsequent thermal dissociation. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polysilsesquioxane with phenyl and chloromethylphenyl groups (PCPSQ) was prepared readily from phenyltrimethoxysilane and [2‐(chloromethylphenyl)ethyl]trimethoxysilane under acidic conditions. Polymerization with chloromethylphenyl groups on PCPSQ with methyl methacrylate (MMA) was conducted in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper(I) bromide and (−)‐sparteine. Atom transfer radical polymerization yielded a graft polymer (PCPSQ‐g‐MMA) efficiently, and no gelation was observed. The process was also applied to the preparation of graft block copolymers on PCPSQ with several methacrylate monomers. An advantage of the graft hybrid polymers was shown in improved thermal behavior. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 4212–4221, 2004  相似文献
