The complexation of different single polyelectrolyte (PE) micelles formed by linear diblock copolymers with oppositely charged brushes with varying grafting densities and charge content was studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations using the primitive model. We found that all micelles perform a directed motion along the vertical z axis on the grafted surface where they trapped while on the other axes the motion is restricted in a circle in which the diameter decreases with the increase of the hydrophilic length of the linear diblock copolymer. The motion of micelles is characterized as super diffusion inside brushes with low densities and low charge content. At high grafting densities and charge content the diffusion becomes Fickian or slightly subdiffusive. The number of the absorbed brush chains on the micelle corona increases almost monotonically with the increase of brush grafting density or with the decrease of charge content. The distance from the surface in which the micelle is trapped can be controlled by the charge density along the grafted PE chain. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Liquid crystalline ordering in planar polymer brushes is investigated theoretically by numerical calculations within a self-consistent field approximation. The brushes are formed by macromolecules with mesogenic groups in main chain and immersed in a solvent. Existence of a microphase segregated brush (MSB) regime with a collapsed orientationally ordered intrinsic sublayer and a swollen external sublayer is shown. At small grafting density, the transition from a conventional brush state to the microphase segregated state is a jump-wise first order phase transition for a finite chain length (N). The magnitudes of the jumps in the average characteristics of the brush tend to zero in the limit N → ∞ since this transition occurs only in a vanishingly small part (∝ N−1/2) of the brush. High compressibility of MSB brush is demonstrated. The origin of phase transition in planar brushes is discussed.  相似文献

Multifunctional, biocompatible, and brush‐grafted poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PEG/PCL) nanoparticles have been synthesized, characterized, and used as vehicles for transporting hydrophobic substances in water. For anchoring the polymer mixed brushes, we used magnetic‐silica particles of 40 nm diameter produced by the reverse microemulsion method. The surface of the silica particle was functionalized with biocompatible polymer brushes, which were synthesized by the combination of “grafting to” and “grafting from” techniques. PEG was immobilized on the particles surface, by “grafting to,” whereas PCL was growth by ROP using the “grafting from” approach. By varying the synthetic conditions, it was possible to control the amount of PCL anchored on the surface of the nanoparticles and consequently the PEG/PCL ratio, which is a vital parameter connected with the arrangement of the polymer brushes as well as the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance of the particles. Thus, adjusting the PEG/PCL ratio, it was possible to obtain a system formed by PEG and PCL chains grafted on the particle's surface that collapsed in segregated domains depending on the solvent used. For instance, the nanoparticles are colloidally stable in water due to the PEG domains and at the same time are able to transport, entrapped within the PCL portion, highly water‐insoluble drugs. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present the synthesis of reactive polymer brushes prepared by surface reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of pentafluorophenyl acrylate. The reactive ester moieties can be used to functionalize the polymer brush film with virtually any functionality by simple post‐polymerization modification with amines. Dithiobenzoic acid benzyl‐(4‐ethyltrimethoxylsilyl) ester was used as the surface chain transfer agent (S‐CTA) and the anchoring group onto the silicon substrates. Reactive polymer brushes with adjustable molecular weight, high grafting density, and conformal coverage through the grafting‐from approach were obtained. Subsequently, the reactive polymer brushes were converted with amino‐spiropyrans resulting in reversible light‐responsive polymer brush films. The wetting behavior could be altered by irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) or visible light. Furthermore, a patterned surface of polymer brushes was obtained using a lithography technique. UV irradiation of the S‐CTA‐modified substrates leads to a selective degradation of S‐CTA in the exposed areas and gives patterned activated polymer brushes after a subsequent RAFT polymerization step. Conversion of the patterned polymer brushes with 5‐((2‐aminoethyl)amino)naphthalene‐1‐sulfonic acid resulted in patterned fluorescent polymer brush films. The utilization of reactive polymer brushes offers an easy approach in the fabrication of highly functional brushes, even for functionalities whose introduction is limited by other strategies. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have performed classical density functional theory calculations to study the behavior of mixed polymer brushes tethered to a planar surface. We assume no lateral segregation of the polymer at the grafting density studied and consider an implicit solvent. For a binary mixture of short and long athermal polymer chains, the short chain is compressed while the long chain is stretched compared with corresponding pure polymer chains at the same grafting density, which is consistent with simulation. This results from configurational entropy effects. Furthermore, we add a mean-field interaction for each polymer brush to simulate their different response towards a solvent. The long chain is forced to dislike the solvent more than the short chain. Through the interplay between the solvent effects and configurational entropy effects, a switch of the polymer brush surface (or outer) layer is found with increasing chain length of the long chain. The transition chain length (long chain) increases with increasing the solvent selectivity, and decreases with increasing the grafting density of the long chain. These results can provide guidance for the design of smart materials based on mixed polymer brushes.  相似文献

More than 2 decades of active investigations in the field of polymer brushes have revealed continuous and growing interest in different aspects of synthesis, properties, and applications of tethered polymers. In this article, we report on our recent advances in brush synthesis. The method we explore is based on the combination of “grafting through” approach with the functional anchoring polymer layer technique. We introduce the photoinitiated “version” of synthesis of polyacrylamide brushes. Both homogeneous depositions and laterally resolved gradient and patterned samples have been prepared by this technique. The results for flat polymer brushes, that is, thickness, stability, and contact angles, are complimented by kinetic parameters as deducted from analysis of gradient samples obtained by the method of a sliding mask. A microscopic shadow mask is used to fabricate patterned brushes. The microscopically patterned brushes demonstrate high lateral resolution limited by optical phenomena. Finally, we have performed a viability assaying of neuronal cell on both flat and patterned brushes. Sufficient restraint of cell adhesion on polyacrylamide photobrushes and very low cytotoxicity of the brush components (polymer brush itself, anchoring layer) make photografting a promising platform to control cell deposition and surface localization. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The dynamics of the concentration fluctuations in end-grafted polystyrene brushes in a theta solvent (cyclohexane) are probed by evanescent wave dynamic light scattering at different wavevectors q and temperatures. When the solvent quality changes from marginal to poor, the relaxation function C(q, t) exhibits strong effects as compared with the smooth variation of the brush density profile. From a single exponential above 50 °C, C(q, t) becomes a two-step decay function. The fast decay is still assigned to the cooperative diffusion albeit slower than in the good solvent regime whereas the slow nonexponential and nondiffusive process might relate to microsegragated and/or chain dynamics in the present polydisperse brush. The relaxation function of the present three brushes with different grafting density reveals similarities and disparities between wet brushes and semidilute polymer solutions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cellulose‐based polymer brushes with variable grafting densities and low dispersity were synthesized by grafting poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PBA) side chains from cellulose‐derived backbones via ATRP. Esterification of commercially available cellulose acetate with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide (2‐BiBB) in NMP provided cellulose‐based macroinitiators averaging one initiation site per double glucose unit. ATRP macroinitiators averaging up to 6 initiation sites per repeating double glucose unit were prepared by acylation of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in LiCl/DMAc solvent system with 2‐BiBB. A series of linear macroinitiators with narrow MWD were obtained by fractional precipitation process. The content of initiating sites was determined by elemental analysis. (Meth)acrylate side chains were then grafted from the cellulose‐based macroinitiators. The prepared cellulose‐based polymer brushes showed tunable degradation rates dependent on grafting density of the brush, following two different degradation pathways, either cleavage of the main chain or detachment of the side chains. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Using an atomic force microscope (AFM), we have investigated the interaction forces exerted by latex particles bearing densely grafted polymer brushes consisting of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA), poly(methoxyethylacrylamide) (PMEA), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), and PMEA-b-PNIPAM in aqueous media (good solvent). The brushes were prepared by controlled surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, and the hydrodynamic thicknesses were measured by dynamic light scattering. The molecular weight (Mn), grafting density (sigma), and polydispersity (PDI) of the brushes were determined by gel permeation chromatography and multiangle laser light scattering after cleaving the polymer from the latex surface by hydrolysis. Force profiles of PDMA (0.017 nm(-2) < or = sigma < or = 0.17 nm-2) and PMEA (sigma = 0.054 nm-2) brushes were purely repulsive upon compression, with forces increasing with Mn and a, as expected, due to excluded volume interactions. At a sufficiently low grafting density (sigma = 0.012 nm-2), PDMA exhibited a long-range exponentially increasing attractive force followed by repulsion upon further compression. The long-range attractive force is believed to be due to bridging between the free chain ends and the AFM tip. The PNIPAM brush exhibited a bridging force at a grafting density of 0.037 nm(-2), a value lower than the sigma needed to induce bridging in the PDMA brush. Bridging was therefore found to depend on grafting density as well as on the nature of the monomer. The grafting densities of these polymers were larger than those typically associated with bridging. Bridging interactions were used to confirm the presence of PNIPAM in a block copolymer PMEA-b-PNIPAMA brush given that the original PMEA homopolymer brush produced a purely repulsive force. The attractive force was first detected in the block copolymer brush at a separation that increased with the length of the PNIPAM block.  相似文献

The accuracy of the molecular weights Mn and polydispersities of polymer brushes, determined by stretching the grafted chains using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and measuring the contour length distribution, was evaluated as a function of grafting density sigma. Poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) brushes were prepared by surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization on latex particles with sigma ranging between 0.17 and 0.0059 chains/nm2 and constant Mn. The polymer, which could be cleaved from the grafting surface by hydrolysis and characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), had a Mn of 30,600 and polydispersity (PDI) of 1.35. The Mn determined by the AFM technique for the higher density brushes agreed quite well with the GPC results but was significantly underestimated for the lower sigma. At high grafting density in good solvent, the extended structure of the brush increases the probability of forming segment-tip contacts located at the chain end. When the distance between chains approached twice the radius of gyration of the polymer, the transition from brush to mushroom structure presumably enabled the formation of a larger number of segment-tip contacts having separations smaller than the contour length, which explains the discrepancy between the two methods at low sigma. The PDI was typically higher than that obtained by GPC, suggesting that sampling of chains with above average contour length occurs at a frequency that is greater than their spatial distribution.  相似文献

We present a self-consistent field analytical theory of a polymer brush formed by weakly charged pH-sensitive (annealing) polyelectrolytes tethered to a solid-liquid interface and immersed in buffer solution of low molecular weight salt. We use the Poisson-Boltzmann framework, applied by us previously to polyelectrolyte (PE) brushes with quenched charge (Zhulina, E. B.; Borisov, O. V. J. Chem. Phys. 1997, 107, 5952). This approach allows for detailed analysis of the internal structure of annealing PE brush in terms of polymer density distribution, profiles of electrostatic potential and of local degree of chain ionization as a function of buffer ionic strength and pH without any assumptions on mobile ion distribution imposed in earlier scaling-type models. The presented analytical theory recovers all major asymptotic dependences for average brush properties predicted earlier. In particular, a nonmonotonic dependence of brush thickness on ionic strength and grafting density is confirmed and specified with accuracy of numerical coefficients including crossover regions. Moreover, the theory predicts qualitatively new effects, such as, e.g., disproportionation of tethered polyions into weakly charged concentrated proximal and strongly charged sparse distal brush domains at low salt and moderate grating densities. The presented results allow us to quantify responsive features of annealing PE brushes whose large-scale and local conformational properties can be manipulated by external stimuli.  相似文献

This article presents effects of polydispersity in polymers grafted on spherical surfaces on grafted polymer chain conformations, grafted layer thickness, and free‐end monomer distribution within the grafted layer. At brush‐like grafting densities, as polydispersity index (PDI) increases, the scaling exponent of radius of gyration of grafted chains approaches that of a single chain grafted on the same nanoparticle, because polydispersity alleviates monomer crowding within the brush. At high PDI, the chains shorter than the number average chain length, Nn, have more compressed conformations, and the chains longer than Nn overall stretch less than in the monodisperse case. As seen in polydisperse flat brushes at high grafting densities, the grafted layer thickness on spherical nanoparticle increases with PDI. Polydispersity eliminates the region near the surface devoid of free‐end monomers seen in monodisperse cases, and it reduces the width of free‐end monomer distribution and shifts the free‐end monomer distribution close to the surface. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Binary polymer brushes, including mixed homopolymer brushes and diblock copolymer brushes, are an attractive class of environmentally responsive nanostructured materials. Owing to microphase separation of the two chemically distinct components in the brush, multifaceted nanomaterials with functionalized and patterned surfaces can be obtained. This review summarizes recent progress on the theory and simulations related to binary polymer brushes grafted to flat, spherical, and cylindrical substrates, with a focus on patterned morphologies of multifaceted hairy nanoparticles, an intriguing class of hybrid nanostructured particles (e.g., nanospheres and nanorods). In particular, powerful field theory and particle-based simulations suitable for revealing novel structures on these patterned surfaces, including self-consistent field theory and dissipative particle dynamics simulations, are emphasized. The unsolved yet critical issues in this research field, such as dynamic response of binary polymer brushes to environmental stimuli and the hierarchical self-assembly of binary hairy nanoparticles, are briefly discussed. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present results of computer simulations of polymer brushes (layers of polymer chains attached at one end onto an impermeable planar surface) under shear deformation at constant shear rate. As the first stage of calculations the behavior of a single brush was studied. The monomer density profile, the distribution of the chain ends, the positions and orientations of different monomers along the chain were calculated. Dimensions of the polymer chains as functions of the shear rate were obtained for different grafting densities. An increase in the brush thickness over the grafting plane with an increase in the shear rate as predicted by the theory of Barrat was observed. However, the magnitude of the effect appears to be small. We explain this by finite extensibility of the grafted chains.  相似文献

By using in situ neutron reflectivity, we measured the swelling behavior of two types of polymer brushes, deuterated polystyrene with a trichlorosilane end group and deuterated polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) block copolymer, in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). The measurements were conducted in the pressure range of 0.1–20 MPa at 36 °C. The pressure dependence of the brush height clearly showed an anomalous peak at the density fluctuation ridge (pressure = 8.2 MPa) that defined the maximum long-range density fluctuation amplitude in the pressure–temperature phase diagram of carbon dioxide (CO2). The density profile of the brush, which could be approximated by a simple step function, and the magnitude of the brush height both indicated that the solvent quality of scCO2 for the deuterated polystyrene brushes was still poor even at the density fluctuation ridge. In addition, atomic force microscopy images for the frozen polystyrene brush prepared by the rapid drying of CO2 showed a phase-separated structure, as predicted from the numerical calculations of Grest and Murat, as a function of the variable Nσ, where N is the polymerization index and σ is the grafting density. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations are used to explore the spatial orientations and conformational transitions of nanorods (NRs) within semiflexible polymer brushes. The orientations of the NR clusters are controlled by the competition between the entropy cost for NRs infiltrated into the polymer brushes and the attractive energy between NRs and polymer brushes. By reducing the grafting density or enhancing the number of NRs, the NR cluster experiences an orientation transition from the vertical direction to the horizontal direction. The semiflexible polymer brushes are regarded as the soft confinements for the NRs, and the soft confinements can induce the formation of the NR aggregation under the effect of the depletion attractions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The equilibrium dispersion of nanoparticles with grafted polymer chains into polymer matrices, of the same chemical structure as the brush, is studied through the device of mean‐field theory. Our results show that the disperion of brush‐coated nanoparticles into a matrix polymer is improved with (i) decreasing particle radius and (ii) increasing brush chain length. Both of these aspects can be understood based on the fact that, unlike the case of planar surfaces, homopolymer chains end‐grafted to spherical nanoparticle surfaces tangentially spread away from the surface thus alleviating the packing frustration that is created by the relatively high grafting densities. This permits significant brush/matrix overlap, even at high grafting densities, a regime that has only recently become experimentally available due to advances in polymer synthesis (i.e., the “grafting‐to” methods). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A key problem with nanomaterials is the difficulty of controlling the dispersion of nanoparticles inside an organic medium. To overcome this problem, functionalization of the nanoparticle surface is required. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes were grown on the surface of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles with atom transfer radical polymerization and a grafting‐from approach. Modified magnetic nanoparticles with a graft density of 0.1 PMMA chains/nm2 were obtained. Cu(II), used as a deactivating complex, allowed good control of the polymerization along with a narrow polydispersity of the polymer chains. The functionalized magnetic nanoparticles were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, gel permeation chromatography, and atomic force microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
