We develop the notion of a cohomology ring of blocks of finite groups and study its basic properties by means of transfer maps between the Hochschild cohomology rings of symmetric algebras associated with bounded complexes of finitely generated bimodules which are projective on either side.  相似文献

We investigate the imaginary cone in hyperbolic Coxeter systems in order to show that any Coxeter system contains universal reflection subgroups of arbitrarily large rank. Furthermore, in the hyperbolic case, the positive spans of the simple roots of the universal reflection subgroups are shown to approximate the imaginary cone (using an appropriate topology on the set of roots), answering a question due to Dyer [9 Dyer , M. The splitting obstruction groups depend functorially on the square of fundamental groups. In the paper the problem of splitting along a submanifold of codimension two under some restrictions on the square of fundamental groups is considered. New exact sequences and commutative diagrams containing Wall groups, splitting obstruction groups, and surgery obstruction groups for manifold pairs are obtained. Examples of computation of splitting obstruction groups and natural maps are considered.  相似文献

We describe a class of groups with the property that the finite ones among them are precisely the complex reflection groups of rank 2. This situation is reminiscent of Coxeter groups, among which the finite ones are precisely the real reflection groups. We also study braid relations between complex reflections and indicate connections to an axiomatic study of root systems and to the Shephard–Todd “collineation groups.”  相似文献

In an earlier work, the second author proved a general formulafor the equivariant Poincaré polynomial of a linear transformationg which normalises a unitary reflection group G, acting on thecohomology of the corresponding hyperplane complement. Thisformula involves a certain function (called a Z-function below)on the centraliser CG(g), which was proved to exist only incertain cases, for example, when g is a reflection, or is G-regular,or when the centraliser is cyclic. In this work we prove theexistence of Z-functions in full generality. Applications includereduction and product formulae for the equivariant Poincarépolynomials. The method is to study the poset L(CG(g)) of subspaceswhich are fixed points of elements of CG(g). We show that thisposet has Euler characteristic 1, which is the key propertyrequired for the definition of a Z-function. We prove that for W2 the Witt vectors of length two over the finite field , we have in characteristic at least 5 and for (3,f) = 1. The result is proved by using the identity and calculating the right term with a group homology spectral sequence. Some information on the spectral sequence is achieved by using the action of the outer automorphism of SL on the homology groups and recent results on K-groups of local rings and the ring of dual numbers over finite fields.  相似文献

This paper establishes the existence of a gap for the stable length spectrum on a hyperbolic manifold. If M is a hyperbolic n-manifold, for every positive ϵ there is a positive δ depending only on n and on ϵ such that an element of π1(M) with stable commutator length less than δ is represented by a geodesic with length less than ϵ. Moreover, for any such M, the first accumulation point for stable commutator length on conjugacy classes is at least 1/12. Conversely, “most” short geodesics in hyperbolic 3-manifolds have arbitrarily small stable commutator length. Thus stable commutator length is typically good at detecting the thick-thin decomposition of M, and 1/12 can be thought of as a kind of homological Margulis constant. We study Hochschild and cyclic homology of finite type algebras using abelian stratifications of their primitive ideal spectrum. Hochschild homology turns out to have a quite complicated behavior, but cyclic homology can be related directly to the singular cohomology of the strata. We also briefly discuss some connections with the representation theory of reductive p-adic groups.  相似文献

We study the filling length function for a finite presentation of a group , and interpret this function as an optimal bound on the length of the boundary loop as a van Kampen diagram is collapsed to the basepoint using a combinatorial notion of a null-homotopy. We prove that filling length is well behaved under change of presentation of . We look at 'AD-pairs' (f,g) for a finite presentation : that is, an isoperimetric function f and an isodiametric function g that can be realised simultaneously. We prove that the filling length admits a bound of the form [g+1][log (f+1)+1] whenever (f,g) is an AD-pair for . Further we show that (up to multiplicative constants) if is an isoperimetric function ( ) for a finite presentation then ( ) is an AD-pair. It is shown that central elements in G. Letzter’s quantum group analogs of symmetric pairs lead to solutions of the reflection equation. This clarifies the relation between Letzter’s approach to quantum symmetric pairs and the approach taken by M. Noumi, T. Sugitani, and M. Dijkhuizen. We develop general tools to show that a Noumi-Sugitani-Dijkhuizen type construction of quantum symmetric pairs can be performed preserving spherical representations from the classical situation. These tools apply to the symmetric pair FII and to all symmetric pairs which correspond to an automorphism of the underlying Dynkin diagram. Hence Noumi-Sugitani-Dijkhuizen type constructions with desirable properties are possible for various symmetric pairs for exceptional Lie algebras. Presented by Susan Montgomery.  相似文献

A Garside group is a group admitting a finite lattice generating set . Using techniques developed by Bestvina for Artin groups of finite type, we construct K(π, 1)s for Garside groups. This construction shows that the (co)homology of any Garside group G is easily computed given the lattice , and there is a simple sufficient condition that implies G is a duality group. The universal covers of these K(π, 1)s enjoy Bestvina's weak nonpositive curvature condition. Under a certain tameness condition, this implies that every solvable subgroup of G is virtually Abelian.  相似文献

Chevalley's theorem and its converse, the Sheppard-Todd theorem, assert that finite reflection groups are distinguished by the fact that the ring of invariant polynomials is freely generated. We show that, in the Euclidean case, a weaker condition suffices to characterize finite reflection groups, namely, that a freely-generated polynomial subring is closed with respect to the gradient product.

In this paper we introduce and study a cohomology theory {H n (–,A)} for simplicial sets with coefficients in symmetric categorical groups A. We associate to a symmetric categorical group A a sequence of simplicial sets {K(A,n)} n0, which allows us to give a representation theorem for our cohomology. Moreover, we prove that for any n3, the functor K(–,n) is right adjoint to the functor n , where n (X ) is defined as the fundamental groupoid of the n-loop complex n (X ). Using this adjunction, we give another proof of how symmetric categorical groups model all homotopy types of spaces Y with i (Y)=0 for all in,n+1 and n3; and also we obtain a classification theorem for those spaces: [–,Y]H n (–, n (Y)).  相似文献
