We provide irreducibility criteria for multivariate polynomials with coefficients in an arbitrary field that extend a classical result of Pólya for polynomials with integer coefficients. In particular, we provide irreducibility conditions for polynomials of the form f(X)(Y ? f 1(X))…(Y ? f n (X)) + g(X), with f, f 1, ?, f n , g univariate polynomials over an arbitrary field.  相似文献

We prove that for no nontrivial ordered abelian group does the ordered power series field admit an exponential, i.e. an isomorphism between its ordered additive group and its ordered multiplicative group of positive elements, but that there is a non-surjective logarithm. For an arbitrary ordered field , no exponential on is compatible, that is, induces an exponential on through the residue map. This is proved by showing that certain functional equations for lexicographic powers of ordered sets are not solvable.

We consider β-expansions of formal Laurent series over finite fields. If the base β is a Pisot or Salem series, we prove that the β-expansion of a Laurent series α is automatic if and only if α is algebraic.  相似文献

The paper presents an explicit example of a noncrossed product division algebra of index and exponent 8 over the field ?(s)(t). It is an iterated twisted function field in two variables D(x, σ)(y, τ ) over a quaternion division algebra D which is defined over the number field ?(√3,√?7). The automorphisms σ and τ are computed by solving relative norm equations in extensions of number fields. The example is explicit in the sense that its structure constants are known. Moreover, it is pointed out that the same arguments also yield another example, this time over the field ?((s))((t)), given by an iterated twisted Laurent series ring D((x, σ))((y, τ )) over the same quaternion division algebra D. Two fields are Witt equivalent if their Witt rings of symmetric bilinear forms are isomorphic. Witt equivalent fields can be understood to be fields having the same quadratic form theory. The behavior of finite fields, local fields, global fields, as well as function fields of curves defined over Archimedean local fields under Witt equivalence is well understood. Numbers of classes of Witt equivalent fields with finite numbers of square classes are also known in some cases. Witt equivalence of general function fields over global fields was studied in the earlier work [13 G?adki, P., Marshall, M. Witt equivalence of function fields over global fields. Trans. Am. Math. In this paper, we extend these results to local case, i.e. we discuss Witt equivalence of function fields of curves over local fields. This article proposes a new method for measuring an aggregative efficiency of multiple period production systems. Every organization or firm generates a time series of data that represent its performances in the resource utilization and output production over multiple periods, and often desires an aggregated measure of efficiency for several periods of interest. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has become an accepted and well-known approach to evaluating efficiency performance in a wide range of cases. However, most of the DEA studies have dealt primarily with ways to gauge the efficiency of production in only a single period so this efficiency reflects the insufficient or partial performance of multiple period productions. The new method is developed through extensions of the concept of Debreu–Farrell technical efficiency and is applied to evaluating the efficiency of cable TV service units with 3-year data.  相似文献

By an elementary proof, we use a result of Conway and Dudziak to show that if A is a hyponormal operator with spectral radius r(A) such that its spectrum is the closed disc {z:|z| ≤ r(A)} then A is reflexive. Using this result, we give a simple proof of a result of Bercovici, Foias, and Pearcy on reflexivity of shift operators. Also, it is shown that every power of an invertible bilateral weighted shift is reflexive.  相似文献

The multi-continued fraction expansion of a multi-formal Laurent series is a sequence pair consisting of an index sequence and a multi-polynomial sequence . We denote the set of the different indices appearing infinitely many times in by H, the set of the different indices appearing in by H+, and call |H| and |H+| the first and second levels of , respectively. By studying the reciprocity property of linear Diophantine systems in light of Malcev-Neumann series, we present in this paper a new approach to and a generalization of Stanley's monster reciprocity theorem. A formula for the “error term” is given in the case when the system does not have the reciprocity property. We also give an inductive proof of Stanley's reciprocity theorem for linear homogeneous Diophantine systems.  相似文献

The field of generalized power series with real coefficients and exponents in an ordered abelian divisible group is a classical tool in the study of real closed fields. We prove the existence of irreducible elements in the ring consisting of the generalized power series with non-positive exponents. The following candidate for such an irreducible series was given by Conway (1976): . Gonshor (1986) studied the question of the existence of irreducible elements and obtained necessary conditions for a series to be irreducible. We show that Conway's series is indeed irreducible. Our results are based on a new kind of valuation taking ordinal numbers as values. If we can give the following test for irreducibility based only on the order type of the support of the series: if the order type is either or of the form and the series is not divisible by any monomial, then it is irreducible. To handle the general case we use a suggestion of
M.-H. Mourgues, based on an idea of Gonshor, which allows us to reduce to the special case . In the final part of the paper we study the irreducibility of series with finite support.

It is known that the value function in an unconstrained Markov decision process with finitely many states and actions is a piecewise rational function in the discount factor a, and that the value function can be expressed as a Laurent series expansion about = 1 for close enough to 1. We show in this paper that this property also holds for the value function of Markov decision processes with additional constraints. More precisely, we show by a constructive proof that there are numbers O = o <1 <... < m–1 < m = 1 such that for everyj = 1, 2, ...,m – 1 either the problem is not feasible for all discount factors in the open interval (j–1, j) or the value function is a rational function in a in the closed interval [j–1, j]. As a consequence, if the constrained problem is feasible in the neighborhood of = 1, then the value function has a Laurent series expansion about = 1. Our proof technique for the constrained case provides also a new proof for the unconstrained case.  相似文献

The authors exhibit some new families of cyclotomic fields which have nontrivial plus parts of their class numbers. They also prove the 3-divisibility of the plus part of the class number of another family consisting of infinitely many cyclotomic fields.
