An element of a group is called anticentral if the conjugacy class of that element is equal to the coset of the commutator subgroup containing that element. A group is called Camina group if every element outside the commutator subgroup is anticentral. In this paper, we investigate the structure of locally finite groups with an anticentral element. Moreover, we construct some non-periodic examples of Camina groups, which are not locally solvable.  相似文献

Let m, n be positive integers. Suppose that G is a residually finite group in which for every element x ∈ G there exists a positive integer q = q(x) ≤ m such that xq is left n-Engel. We show that G is locally virtually nilpotent. Further, let w be a multilinear commutator and G a residually finite group in which for every product of at most 896 w-values x there exists a positive integer q = q(x) dividing m such that xq is left n-Engel. In this article, we prove that any irreducible Coxeter group of infinite order, which is possibly of infinite rank, is directly indecomposable as an abstract group. The key ingredient of the proof is that we can determine, for an irreducible Coxeter group W, the centralizers in W of the normal subgroups of W that are generated by involu-tions. As a consequence, the problem of deciding whether two general Coxeter groups are isomorphic is reduced to the case of irreducible ones. We also describe the automorphism group of a general Coxeter group in terms of those of its irreducible components.  相似文献

In this paper we study non-solvable and non-Frobenius Camina pairs (G,N). It is known [D. Chillag, A. Mann, C. Scoppola, Generalized Frobenius groups II, Israel J. Math. 62 (1988) 269–282] that in this case N is a p-group. Our first result (Theorem 1.3) shows that the solvable residual of G/Op(G) is isomorphic either to SL(2,pe),p is a prime or to SL(2,5), SL(2,13) with p=3, or to SL(2,5) with p7.Our second result provides an example of a non-solvable and non-Frobenius Camina pair (G,N) with |Op(G)|=55 and G/Op(G)SL(2,5). Note that G has a character which is zero everywhere except on two conjugacy classes. Groups of this type were studies by S.M. Gagola [S.M. Gagola, Characters vanishing on all but two conjugacy classes, Pacific J. Math. 109 (1983) 363–385]. To our knowledge this group is the first example of a Gagola group which is non-solvable and non-Frobenius.  相似文献

The present article deals with locally finite groups G having an involution φ such that C G (φ) is an SF-group. It is shown that G possesses a normal subgroup B which is a central product of finitely many groups isomorphic to PSL(2, K i ) or SL(2, K i ) for some infinite locally finite fields K i of odd characteristic, such that [G, φ]′/B and G/[G, φ] are both SF-groups.  相似文献

We consider the graph Γ(G), associated with the conjugacy classes of a group G. Its vertices are the nontrivial conjugacy classes of G, and we join two different classes C, D, whenever there exist x ∈ G and y ∈ D such that xy = yx. The aim of this article is twofold. First, we investigate which graphs can occur in various contexts and second, given a graph Γ(G) associated with G, we investigate the possible structure of G. We proved that if G is a periodic solvable group, then Γ(G) has at most two components, each of diameter at most 9. If G is any locally finite group, then Γ(G) has at most 6 components, each of diameter at most 19. Finally, we investigated periodic groups G with Γ(G) satisfying one of the following properties: (i) no edges exist between noncentral conjugacy classes, and (ii) no edges exist between infinite conjugacy classes. In particular, we showed that the only nonabelian groups satisfying (i) are the three finite groups of order 6 and 8.  相似文献

We show that every virtually torsion-free subgroup of the outer automorphism group of a conjugacy separable hyperbolic group is residually finite. As a result, we are able to prove that the group of outer automorphisms of every finitely generated Fuchsian group and of every free-by-finite group is residually finite.  相似文献

We study finite groups G with elements g such that |C G (g)| = |G:G′|. (Such elements generalize fixed-point-free automorphisms of finite groups.) We show that these groups have a unique conjugacy class of nilpotent supplements for the commutator subgroup and, using the classification of finite simple groups, that these groups are solvable.  相似文献

We introduce two new types of Dehn functions of group presentations which seem more suitable (than the standard Dehn function) for infinite group presentations and prove the fundamental equivalence between the solvability of the word problem for a group presentation defined by a decidable set of defining words and the property of being computable for one of the newly introduced functions (this equivalence fails for the standard Dehn function). Elaborating on this equivalence and making use of this function, we obtain a characterization of finitely generated groups for which the word problem can be solved in nondeterministic polynomial time. We also give upper bounds for these functions, as well as for the standard Dehn function, for two well-known periodic groups. In particular, we prove that the (standard) Dehn function of a 2-group Γ of intermediate growth, defined by a system of defining relators due to Lysenok, is bounded from above by C1x2 log2 x, where C1 > 1 is a constant. We also show that the (standard) Dehn function of a free m-generator Burnside group B(m, n) of exponent n ≥ 248, where n is either odd or divisible by 29, defined by a minimal system of defining relators, is bounded from above by the subquadratic function x19/12. We consider the following two finiteness conditions on normalizers and centralizers in a group G: (i) |NG(H) : H| < ∞ for every H ? G, and (ii) |CG(x):?x?|<∞ for every ?x??G. We show that (i) and (ii) are equivalent in the classes of locally finite groups and locally nilpotent groups. In both cases, the groups satisfying these conditions are a special kind of cyclic extensions of Dedekind groups. We also study a variation of (i) and (ii), where the requirement of finiteness is replaced with a bound. In this setting, we extend our analysis to the classes of periodic locally graded groups and non-periodic groups. While the two conditions are still equivalent in the former case, in the latter the condition about normalizers is stronger than that about centralizers.  相似文献

We study groups having invariant metrics of curvature bounded below in the sense of Alexandrov. Such groups are a generalization of Lie groups with invariant Riemannian metrics, but form a much larger class. We prove that every locally compact, arcwise connected, first countable group has such a metric. These groups may not be (even infinite dimensional) manifolds. We show a number of relationships between the algebraic and geometric structures of groups equipped with such metrics. Many results do not require local compactness.

Following Rose, a subgroup H of a group G is called contranormal, if G = H G . In certain sense, contranormal subgroups are antipodes to subnormal subgroups. It is well known that a finite group is nilpotent if and only if it has no proper contranormal subgroups. However, for the infinite groups this criterion is not valid. There are examples of non-nilpotent infinite groups whose subgroups are subnormal; in paricular, these groups have no contranormal subgroups. Nevertheless, for some classes of infinite groups, the absence of contranormal subgroups implies the nilpotency of the group. The current article is devoted to the search of such classes. Some new criteria of nilpotency in certain classes of infinite groups have been established.  相似文献
