We describe a new one-dimensional synthetic aperture imaging laser radar (ladar) using the resonant sensitivity of a microchip laser to frequency-shifted optical feedback and galvanometric scanning of the target under investigation. In our experiment, the laser is both the source and the detector, providing optical amplification with self-aligned heterodyne detection. By using galvanometric scanning, we achieve an along-track spatial resolution better than the diffraction limit. 相似文献

We study a multimode semiconductor laser subject to moderate selective optical feedback. The steady state of the laser is destabilized by a Hopf bifurcation and exhibits a period-doubling route to chaos. We also show the existence of a heteroclinic connection between a saddle node and an unstable focus that can be associated with experimentally observed multimode low-frequency fluctuations. This heteroclinic connection coexists with a chaotic attractor resulting from the period-doubling process. 相似文献

Strong optical feedback in a birefringent dual frequency He--Ne laser with a
high reflectivity feedback mirror has been investigated for the first time.
The output characteristics of two orthogonally polarized modes are
demonstrated in two different optical feedback cases: one is for both modes
being fed back and the other is for only one of the modes being fed back.
Strong mode competition can be observed between the two modes with strong
optical feedback. And when one mode's intensity is near its maximum, the
other mode is nearly extinguished. When both modes are fed back into the
laser cavity, the mode competition is stronger than when only one mode is
fed back. The difference in initial intensity between the two orthogonally
polarized modes plays an important role in the mode competition, which has
been experimentally and theoretically demonstrated. 相似文献

An experimental investigation of a semiconductor laser subject to moderate to strong optical feedback shows that sporadic power discontinuities occur everywhere along the boundary separating feedback regimes IV and V. These low-frequency fluctuations (LFF's) do not occur just near the solitary-laser threshold as previously thought. Furthermore, although the LFF's appear as power dropouts near threshold, they manifest as power jump-ups well above threshold. Theoretical modeling shows reasonable agreement with experiments. 相似文献

A diode-pumped, acousto-optic Q-switched fiber laser is presented based on multimode ytterbium-doped fiber. The fiber with core diameter of 30 μm is used to increase the laser gain volume and the pulse energy efficiently. The average power in excess of 9 W is obtained at the repetition rate of 20 kHz with 66% slope efficiency. The pulse width is 198 ns with no evident amplified spontaneous emission between pulses, thus the pulse energy and peak power are 465 μJ and 2.36 kW, respectively. 相似文献

An original acousto-optic deflector is based on the anisotropic diffraction in the paratellurite crystal. The deflector is characterized by a relatively high diffraction efficiency for depolarized laser radiation. The deflector consists of two sequential acousto-optic cells. Each cell deflects one of the orthogonally polarized components of the originally depolarized radiation. The first and second cells scan the low- and highfrequency parts of the angular interval, respectively. The simultaneous and independent operation of the cells makes it possible to use the entire optical (laser) power. A frequency band of 32 MHz is almost reached for depolarized radiation with a wavelength of 1.06 µm and the absolute angular interval is 50 mrad at a total efficiency of no less than 70%. 相似文献

This work examines the feasibility of using incoherent optical feedback to generate high-frequency optical signals in a semiconductor laser. At a roundtrip feedback distance of 30 cm, a signal appears at around 1 GHz while the laser output is kept in single longitudinal mode and single polarization. This paper presents the anisotropic optical feedback of a single
frequency intra-cavity He--Ne laser. A novel phenomenon was
discovered that the laser output an elliptical polarized frequency
instead of the initial linear polarized one. Two intensities with a
phase difference were detected, both of which were modulated in the
form of cosine wave and a fringe shift corresponds to a λ/2
movement of the feedback mirror. The phase difference can be
continuously modulated by the wave plate in the external cavity.
Frequency stabilization was used to stabilize the laser frequency so
as to enlarge the measuring range and improve the measurement
precision. This anisotropic optical feedback system offers a
potential displacement measurement technology with the function of
subdivision of λ/2 and in-time direction judgment.
The three-mirror Fabry--Perot cavity model is used to present the
experimental results. Given the lack of need of lasing adjustment,
this full intra-cavity laser can significantly improve the
simplicity and stability of the optical feedback system. 相似文献

An efficient locking technique based on optical feedback is demonstrated to suppress jitter on the rf beat note between the two modes of a dual-frequency Yb:Er glass laser. The method consists of a self-injection process in which one selected mode serves as a master oscillator to lock and stabilize the second mode via a frequency-shifted optical feedback. The beat note adjusted near 170 MHz was stabilized with an accuracy of 250 mHz using an optical feedback loop with a double pass through an acousto-optic modulator. The beating note can be tuned over 300 kHz by controlling the reference oscillator. The extensions and limitations of the technique are discussed. 相似文献

Dynamics of a semiconductor laser subject to moderate optical feedback operating in the low-frequency fluctuation regime is numerically investigated.Multimode Lang-Kobayashi(LK)equations show that the low-frequency intensity dropout including the total intensity and sub-modes intensity is accompanied by sudden dropout simultaneously,which is in good agreement with experimental observation.The power fluctuation is quite annoying in practical applications,therefore it becomes important to study the mechanism of power fluctuation.It is also shown that many factors,such as spontaneous emission noise and feedback parameter,may influence power fluctuation larger than previously expected. 相似文献

This paper investigates the intensity tuning characteristics of a double
longitudinal modes He--Ne laser subjected to optical feedback. The intensity
undulations of the total light and the two modes are observed for different external
cavity length. Two modulations of the internal cavity length are performed. One is
only for the internal cavity length being modulated and the other is for both the
internal and the external cavity length being modulated. The undulation frequency of
the total light is found to be determined by the ratio of external cavity length to
internal cavity length in both modulations. When the external cavity length is
integral times of the internal cavity length, the fringe frequency of the total
light could be seven or even more times of that in conventional optical feedback. A
simple theoretical analysis is presented, which is in good agreement with the
experimental results. The potential use of the experimental results is also

The effect of optical feedback noise of a laser diode on the stability of gas-absorption spectra was investigated by monitoring
the optical absorption of CO2 gas. Lasing longitudinal mode instability greatly degraded the shape of the absorption spectra, and coherence collapse in
the laser diode greatly broadened the spectra. The correlation between the optical feedback noise of the laser diode and the
shape of the gas-absorption spectra was clarified on the basis of these spectral behaviors.

We present a rate equation model to explain and simulate the steady state response of optical feedback in orthogonally polarized
microchip Nd:YAG lasers, which is observed in our experiment: When the external-cavity length is tuned, the two orthogonal
polarization states perform an opposite-phase power modulation. With the increase of feedback light intensity, the power modulation
of each orthogonal polarization state will present an amplitude increase, and finally become a polarization-state hopping;
