Influence of some types of reflections on oscillatory processes in gyrotrons has been studied. Estimations of the conditions for oscillation stability in the presence of a reflected signal are given. In order to demonstrate the usability of gyrotron oscillators as frequency step tunable high power millimeter-wave sources, experiments on a 1 MW, 140 GHz TE22,6 gyrotron with a built-in quasi-optical (q. o.) mode converter have been performed. By varying the operating parameters of the tube, a series of oscillations in the frequency range from 114 GHz to 166 GHz were excited. To avoid reflections, caused by the required vacuum barrier window, the gyrotron was equipped with a Brewster window. The achieved output power levels between 0.85 and 1.05 MW are compared to measurements carried out with the same tube using a conventional single-disk window. These experiments showed that even by using a q. o. mode converter, the influence of window reflections on the gyrotron oscillatory behavior cannot be removed completely.  相似文献

We study oscillation in a gyrotron with allowance for reflections from an output horn. Regions with different system behaviors, such as stationary oscillation, self-modulation, and complex-dynamics regimes are found in the parameter plane. The scenarios of appearance of chaotic oscillations are considered. It is shown that they can emerge via either a sequence of period-doubling bifurcations or destruction of quasiperiodic motion. For chaotic attractors, Lyapunov exponents are calculated and their dimensions are estimated on the basis of the Kaplan-Yorke formula. Nonstationary behavior of a gyrotron in the presence of reflections is investigated by means of our time-dependent self-consistent code. It is shown that the traditionally accepted scenario of the transition from the single-frequency stationary operation regime to the chaotic nonstationary regime due to an increase in the magnitude of the reflection coefficient is not correct if a realistic non-fixed field profile is used in the simulations. In this case, the increase of the reflection coefficient above a certain threshold value (R 0.4) leads to an excitation of a number of modes of the mismatched gyrotron cavity. Then the gyrotron shows a very complicated periodic or quasiperiodic behavior. For higher reflection coefficients (R 0.85), the competition between the modes of the mismatched cavity leads to the suppression of the main mode by another one operating at higher frequency. The influence of the distance to the reflecting load on the gyrotron behavior is also demonstrated.  相似文献

Based on the nonlinear self-consistent theory of gyrotron traveling wave amplifier (gyro-TWA), the influence of the reflections of the output port with the taper on the beam-wave interaction in the gyro-TWA is studied. The simulation results show that the reflections have great effects on the TE01 mode gyro-TWA operating at the fundamental. The influence of the taper angle and the interaction length on the beam-wave interaction and the power profile is discussed and the corresponding physical mechanism is analyzed. The saturated output power keeps same approximately with the increase of the taper angle in the presence of reflection while the saturated gain decreases obviously.  相似文献

We present the results of experimental studies of the effect of reflection of microwave radiation from a dielectric window on the frequency characteristics of the output signal of a technological gyrotron. It is shown that the spectrum width increases several times due to the effect of reflections. The feasibility of controlling the spectrum of multifrequency oscillations in a gyrotron by means of external reflections is studied. It is shown that, in self-modulation oscillation modes of operation, the radiation spectrum lines may come close to the resonance frequencies of a combined electromagnetic system including the reflector-limited part of the output waveguide. Under these conditions, the frequency separation of modes and, accordingly, the self-modulation period can be controlled by varying the position of the reflector. Theoretical results are corroborated by experiments with a 30-GHz relativistic gyrotron with an external reflector.  相似文献

The TE22,6-mode gyrotron operated at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe at a frequency of 140 GHz has been investigated with respect to the behavior of different emitter materials, step tunability and reflections of the output beam. Two different materials of an emitter ring, LaB6 and a coated dispenser cathode, were used to test the features of the gyrotron. The output power was found to be independent from the cathode material, as long as a new emitter ring was used. Aging of the emitter led to a slightly decreased output power. The gyrotron also was operated with a Brewster window. The broad-band characteristics of this window made it possible to measure the neighboring frequencies in a frequency range extending from 114 to 166 GHz. Only a slight dependence of the output power has been found over the whole frequency range. The Brewster window also allows us to investigate the influence of reflections on the output power. A strong decrease of the output power was found even for very small reflections. Tilting the power calorimeter (the reflections were measured to be less than 1%) increased the output power by about 20% to 1.6 MW at an efficiency of 36.2%. With a collector depression voltage of 35 kV for energy recovery, efficiencies of 60% at the above-mentioned output power were obtained  相似文献

Output window design is one of the key issues for realizing broadband output of a multi-frequency gyrotron. Corresponding to the recent development of a frequency step-tunable 1 MW gyrotron at FZK, this paper reports about a newly designed ultra-broadband CVD-diamond disk Brewster window. The detailed calculations of mm-wave transmission characteristics are given, and measurement results of the disk loss tangent and its distribution across the disk are also presented. The geometry of the window unit has been optimized to keep the window reflections low over a wide angular range around the Brewster angle.  相似文献

A general theory is presented for studying the influence of reflections on mode competition in gyrotrons. Strong effect is found in the illustrative example: the coaxial cavity TE28,16 gyrotron operating close to the optimal point in the general parameter spare. In some cases, the fixed-field approximation and the self-consistent approach lead to qualitatively different predictions, which emphasizes the need for self-consistent calculations in the final stage of design of a gyrotron  相似文献

Phase-locking in a 34.5-GHz special complex cavity gyrotron oscillator operating at the second harmonic of the electron cyclotron frequency was studied. Injection of the locking power was made via a quasi-optical circulator connected to the gyrotron output. Locking bandwidth was measured by comparing the phase of the injection signal and output signal using a balanced mixer. Locking was observed with input power level as low as 40 dB below the gyrotron output power. The locking bandwidth is, however, narrower than in gyrotrons operating at the fundamental cyclotron frequency which may be attributed to the longer resonant cavity in the second harmonic gyrotron and the corresponding larger value of external quality factor. The measurements are roughly in agreement with predictions of Adler's phase-locking equation which is given for our system in terms of powers propagating in the output waveguide toward and away from the gyrotron cavity  相似文献

The paper presents an advanced method for and results of calculating main parameters of CW 170 GHz/1 MW gyrotrons operating at the TE28.7 and TE31.8 modes for ITER. Parameters are optimized to achieve maximum efficiency of the gyrotron with an acceptable Ohmic load on the cavity. Numerical modeling of starting up a gyrotron with an optimized cavity and processes of mode interaction are discussed.  相似文献

回旋行波管放大器是一种具有高功率、高频率、宽带宽的毫米波放大器,TE02模二次谐波回旋行波管放大器在保持基波回旋行波管放大器的基础上极大地减小了工作磁场,从而具有广阔的应用前景. 利用两段分布式损耗的互作用结构,有效抑制了绝对不稳定性和回旋返波振荡,避免了模式互作用电路引起的模式畸变,提高了输出功率,在一定程度上克服了谐波互作用较弱的缺点,满足了扩展功率容量和放大器长时间稳定工作的要求. 非线性模拟结果和粒子模型(particle in cell)模拟结果均表明,在工作电压为100k 关键词: W波段 二次谐波 回旋行波管放大器  相似文献

A self-consistent time domain analysis of gyrotrons is presented which allows studying multi-mode, multi-frequency operation. The electromagnetic field in the gyrotron cavity is expanded with respect to complete sets of eigenfunctions so that space charge effects are included in the analysis. Two improvements of the modal expansion inside gyrotron cavities are suggested which significantly increase the accuracy and the numerical efficiency of this method, namely, the removal of the non-uniform convergence of some field series at the coupling apertures and the estimation of the asymptotic values of some slowly converging series related to the modal analysis by a moderate number of cavity eigenfunctions. Discrete Fourier transform is used to obtain the time dependence of the electromagnetic field. The electron beam is described by a set of relativistic single particles. It is demonstrated that the strong numerical requirements of the suggested method can be overcome by using a vector computer. Two gyrotrons are investigated, namely, a low Q 35 GHz TE01- and a 150 GHz TE03-gyrotron. Both oscillation build-up and steady state operation are investigated including mode competition and window reflections. The simulations show that the assumption of a monofrequent steady state operation of gyrotrons, which is made by the commonly used frequency domain methods, is not always justified.  相似文献

In order to provide electron beams of powerful gyrotrons, magnetron-injection guns operating in the regime of the temperature limited current are used. The electron beam quality and gyrotron performances are defined both by the cathode emission processes and the processes occurring in the electron beam during its formation and transportation. The results of measurements of the energy spectrum and velocity spread of the gyrotron electron beam in different regimes are given. Experimental data on the parameter of efficient emission inhomogeneity for different regimes are presented, as well as the dependencies of electron beam parameters on efficient inhomogeneity of the cathode  相似文献
