The effect of a 65° sweep reverse half-delta wing (RHDW), mounted at the squared tip of a rectangular NACA 0012 wing, on the tip vortex was investigated experimentally at Re?=?2.45?×?105. The RHDW was found to produce a weaker tip vortex with a lower vorticity level and, more importantly, a reduced lift-induced drag compared to the baseline wing. In addition to the lift increment, the RHDW also produced a large separated wake flow and subsequently an increased profile drag. The reduction in lift-induced drag, however, outperformed the increase in profile drag and resulted in a virtually unchanged total drag in comparison with the baseline wing. Physical mechanisms responsible for the RHDW-induced appealing aerodynamics and vortex flow modifications were discussed.

The early evolution of an initially columnar vortex normal to a solid wall was examined. The vortex was generated by a pair of flaps in a water tank. Detrimental effects from the wall during the vortex generation were avoided by producing the vortex normal to a free surface and subsequently bringing a horizontal plate into contact with the surface. Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) measurements of the velocity and vorticity, together with laser induced fluorescence (LIF) visualizations, in a meridional plane revealed a toroidal structure with the appearance of an axisymmetric vortex breakdown bubble. Agreement was found between the measurements and numerical simulations of the axisymmetric Navier–Stokes equations. The results show that the flow in the effusive corner region is dominated by a Bödewadt-type spatially oscillatory boundary layer within the core region and a potential-like vortex boundary layer at large radii. The toroidal structure results from the interaction between these two boundary layers, leading to the roll up of a dominant shear layer within the Bödewadt structure, and does not develop from the columnar vortex itself.

Efficient flow control strategies aimed at reducing the aerodynamic drag of road vehicles require a detailed knowledge of the reference flow. In this work, the flow around the rear slanted window of a generic car model was experimentally studied through wall shear stress measurements using an electrochemical method. The mean and fluctuating wall shear stress within the wall impact regions of the recirculation bubble and the main longitudinal vortex structures which develop above the rear window are presented. Correlations allow a more detailed characterization of the recirculation phenomenon within the separation bubble. In the model symmetry plane the recirculation structure compares well with simpler 2D configurations; specific lengths, flapping motion and shedding of large-scale vortices are observed, these similarities diminish when leaving the middle plane due to the strong three-dimensionality of the flow. A specific attention is paid to the convection processes occurring within the recirculation: a downstream convection velocity is observed, in accordance with 2D recirculations from the literature, and an upstream convection is highlighted along the entire bubble length which has not been underlined in some previous canonical configurations.

The aerodynamics of a sailing yacht with different sail trims are presented, derived from simulations performed using computational fluid dynamics. A Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes approach was used to model sixteen sail trims first tested in a wind tunnel, where the pressure distributions on the sails were measured. An original approach was employed by using two successive simulations: the first one on a large domain to model the blockage due to the wind tunnel walls and the sails model, and a second one on a smaller domain to model the flow around the sails model. A verification and validation of the computed aerodynamic forces and pressure distributions was performed. The computed pressure distribution is shown to agree well with the measured pressures. The sail surface pressure was correlated with the increase of turbulent viscosity in the laminar separation bubble, the flow reattachment and the trailing edge separation. The drive force distribution on both sails showed that the fore part of the genoa (fore sail) provides the majority of the drive force and that the effect of the aft sail is mostly to produce an upwash effect on the genoa. An aerodynamic model based on potential flow theory and a viscous correction is proposed. This model, with one free parameter to be determined, is shown to fit the results better than the usual form drag and induced drag only, even if no friction drag is explicitly considered.

Sensitivity of drag to tangential surface motion is calculated in flow past a circular cylinder in both two- and three-dimensional conditions at Reynolds number \(\textit{Re} \le 1000\). The magnitude of the sensitivity maximises in the region slightly upstream of the separation points where the contour lines of spanwise vorticity are normal to the cylinder surface. A control to reduce drag can be obtained by (negatively) scaling the sensitivity. The high correlation of sensitivities of controlled and uncontrolled flow indicates that the scaled sensitivity is a good approximation of the nonlinear optimal control. It is validated through direct numerical simulations that the linear range of the steady control is much higher than the unsteady control, which synchronises the vortex shedding and induces lock-in effects. The steady control injects angular momentum into the separating boundary layer, stabilises the flow and increases the base pressure significantly. At \(\textit{Re}=100\), when the maximum tangential motion reaches 50% of the free-stream velocity, the vortex shedding, boundary-layer separation and recirculation bubbles are eliminated and 32% of the drag is reduced. When the maximum tangential motion reaches 2.5 times of the free-stream velocity, thrust is generated and the power savings ratio, defined as the ratio of the reduced drag power to the control input power, reaches 19.6. The mechanism of drag reduction is attributed to the change of the radial gradient of spanwise vorticity (\(\partial _{r} \hat{\zeta }\)) and the subsequent accelerated pressure recovery from the uncontrolled separation points to the rear stagnation point.

In this work simulations using the Large Eddy Simulation technique have been made of the flow around a generic container freight wagon model. The model consists of one 11.8 m standard length container placed on a wagon. Details of the undercarriage such as wheels are included, but the container is generic and smoothed in comparison to a real freight wagon. The Reynolds number of the flow is 105 based on the container width of 2.354 m. Two cases have been considered in the study, one case where the wagon is standing alone and one case where it is submerged into a train set with wagons ahead and behind the wagon. The latter case is simulated using periodic boundary condition. Both the time-averaged and the instantaneous flow around the wagon for the two cases are described. For the single wagon case, it is found that the separation bubble formed on the roof of the container oscillates back and forth in the streamwise direction and that this oscillation is in phase with oscillations found in the upper shear layer of the ring vortex in the wake. The mechanism that is causing the synchronization of the oscillations of the separation bubble at the front and the upper shear layers in the wake is found to be waves of vorticity being shed from the separation bubble. The time-averaged ring vortex in the near wake of the single wagon is found to be inclined due to the disturbance of the undercarriage details on flow in the lower shear layer. The lower center of the ring vortex is located closer to the base face than the upper center. The drag coefficient of the wagon in the periodic case was found to be only 10% of that of the single wagon case. This is due to two symmetrical counter-rotating vortices found in the gaps which make the train set appear as a single body to the oncoming flow and shielding the wagon from any direct impingement of the flow. The counter-rotating vortices in the gap are found to inhibit periodic oscillations in the lateral direction. These oscillations cause vortical structures to form by the air that is pushed out from the gap and these flow structures cause a dominating oscillation of non-dimensional frequency St=0.12 in the side force signal.

Characteristics of the developing recirculation region behind a tapered trapezoidal cylinder and its interaction with the separating shear layer from the leading edges were studied numerically for an impulsively started laminar flow. An unsteady stream function–vorticity formulation was used. The Reynolds numbers considered range from 25 to 1000. Pressure contours, surface pressure coefficient, wake length and drag coefficient were studied through the streamline flow field. Main flow and subflow regimes were identified by an analysis of the evolution of the flow characteristics. It was found that typically, for a given trapezoidal cylinder, flow starts with no separation. As time advances, the symmetrical standing zone of recirculation develops aft of the trapezoidal cylinder. The rate of growth in width, length and structure of the aft end eddies depends on the Reynolds number. In time, separated flow from the leading edges of the trapezoidal cylinder also develops and forms growing separation bubbles on the upper and lower inclined surfaces of the trapezoidal cylinder. As time advances, the separation bubbles on the upper and lower inclined surfaces of the cylinder grow towards the downstream regions and eventually merge with the swelling symmetrical eddies aft of the cylinder. This merging of the flows creates a complex flow regime with a disturbed tertiary flow zone near the merging junction. Eventually, depending on the Reynolds number and the tapered angle of the trapezoidal cylinder, the flow develops into a specific category of symmetrical standing recirculatory flow with its own distinct characteristics. Comparisons with the available results of other investigators showed very good agreement.

In this paper, we address the influence of a blowing-/suction-type distributed forcing on the flow past a blunt-based axisymmetric bluff body by means of direct numerical simulations. The forcing is applied via consecutive blowing and suction slots azimuthally distributed along the trailing edge of the bluff body. We examine the impact of the forcing wavelength, amplitude and waveform on the drag experienced by the bluff body and on the occurrence of the reflectional symmetry preserving and reflectional symmetry breaking wake modes, for Reynolds numbers 800 and 1,000. We show that forcing the flow at wavelengths inherent to the unforced flow drastically damps drag oscillations associated with the vortex shedding and vorticity bursts, up to their complete suppression. The overall parameter analysis suggests that this damping results from the surplus of streamwise vorticity provided by the forcing that tends to stabilize the ternary vorticity lobes observed at the aft part of the bluff body. In addition, conversely to a blowing-type or suction-type forcing, the blowing-/suction-type forcing involves strong nonlinear interactions between locally decelerated and accelerated regions, severely affecting both the mean drag and the frequencies representative of the vortex shedding and vorticity bursts.

PIV investigation of flow behind surface mounted permeable ribs
The flow behind surface mounted permeable rib geometries, i.e. solid, slit, split-slit and inclined split-slit ribs have been studied using flow visualization and PIV (2-C and 3-C) technique in streamwise and cross-stream measurement planes. The objective behind this study is to understand the flow structures responsible for heat transfer/mixing enhancement with simultaneous pressure penalty reduction by permeable rib geometries. The Reynolds number based on the rib height has been set equal to 5,538 and the open area ratio of permeable ribs is equal to 20%. The permeable rib geometries have shorter reattachment length in comparison to the solid rib. The maximum 41% reduction in reattachment length is observed for the inclined split-slit rib. The splitter mounted inside the slit leads to two corner vortices behind it. The corner vortices drag the flow from the primary recirculation bubble region towards the rib resulting in drop of the reattachment length. Two horseshoe vortices are present in the flow through the slit at both sides of the splitter due to the upstream flow separation. The slit inclination moves these horseshoe vortices closer to the bottom wall. A film like flow through the slit is present near the downstream corner of the inclined split-slit rib. The spanwise velocity gradient due to the splitter leads to vorticity and turbulence enhancement by vortex stretching. The inclination of the slit and the use of a splitter inside the slit are two important design parameters responsible in generation of near-wall longitudinal vortices. The flow field behind permeable ribs is dominated by vortical structures with definable critical flow patterns, i.e. node, saddle and foci. These predominant swirling flow motions contribute to the mixing enhancement behind permeable rib geometries. On leave from Mechanical Engineering Department, IIT Kanpur, U.P. 208016, India

In this study, a passive flow control experiment on a 3D bluff-body using vortex generators (VGs) is presented. The bluff-body is a modified Ahmed body (Ahmed in J Fluids Eng 105:429–434 1983) with a curved rear part, instead of a slanted one, so that the location of the flow separation is no longer forced by the geometry. The influence of a line of non-conventional trapezoïdal VGs on the aerodynamic forces (drag and lift) induced on the bluff-body is investigated. The high sensitivity to many geometric (angle between the trapezoïdal element and the wall, spanwise spacing between the VGs, longitudinal location on the curved surface) and physical (freestream velocity) parameters is clearly demonstrated. The maximum drag reduction is ?12%, while the maximum global lift reduction can reach more than ?60%, with a strong dependency on the freestream velocity. For some configurations, the lift on the rear axle of the model can be inverted (?104%). It is also shown that the VGs are still efficient even downstream of the natural separation line. Finally, a dynamic parameter is chosen and a new set-up with motorized vortex generators is proposed. Thanks to this active device. The optimal configurations depending on two parameters are found more easily, and a significant drag and lift reduction (up to ?14% drag reduction) can be reached for different freestream velocities. These results are then analyzed through wall pressure and velocity measurements in the near-wake of the bluff-body with and without control. It appears that the largest drag and lift reduction is clearly associated to a strong increase of the size of the recirculation bubble over the rear slant. Investigation of the velocity field in a cross-section downstream the model reveals that, in the same time, the intensity of the longitudinal trailing vortices is strongly reduced, suggesting that the drag reduction is due to the breakdown of the balance between the separation bubble and the longitudinal vortices. It demonstrates that for low aspect ratio 3D bluff-bodies, like road vehicles, the flow control strategy is much different from the one used on airfoils: an early separation of the boundary layer can lead to a significant drag reduction if the circulation of the trailing vortices is reduced.

The effect of Reynolds number on the flow development upstream of a rigid, non-porous, static fence is investigated experimentally. The flow field is measured using time-resolved, two-component particle image velocimetry at Reynolds numbers based on fence height of 18000, 36000, and 54000. The results show that a laminar separation bubble forms upstream of the junction vortex at the base of the fence. The mean extent of the bubble decreases with increasing Reynolds number, with mean separation moving downstream and mean reattachment moving upstream. In the aft portion of the bubble, shear layer vortices form and are shed at scaled frequencies and wavelengths that are comparable to laminar separation bubble shedding in low Reynolds number airfoils and flat plates with an imposed adverse pressure gradient. The strong periodicity of the associated coherent structures and the proximity of shear layer roll-up relative to the fence should be taken into consideration in the relevant designs due to potential implications to structural loading. A simple flow separation prediction model combining inviscid fence flow solution with Thwaites’ method is introduced and shows good agreement with the experimental results for the Reynolds number range considered.

Numerical results are presented for an oscillating viscous flow past a square cylinder with square and rounded corners and a diamond cylinder with square corners at Keulegan–Carpenter numbers up to 5. This unsteady flow problem is formulated by the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations in vorticity and stream-function form on body-fitted coordinates and solved by a finite-difference method. Second-order Adams-Bashforth and central-difference schemes are used to discretize the vorticity transport equation while a third-order upwinding scheme is incorporated to represent the nonlinear convective terms. Since the vorticity distribution has a mathematical singularity at a sharp corner and since the force coefficients are found in experiments to be sensitive to the corner radius of rectangular cylinders, a grid-generation technique is applied to provide an efficient mesh system for this complex flow. Local grid concentration near the sharp corners, instead of any artificial treatment of the sharp corners being introduced, is used in order to obtain high numerical resolution. The elliptic partial differential equation for stream function and vorticity in the transformed plane is solved by a multigrid iteration method. For an oscillating flow past a rectangular cylinder, vortex detachment occurs at irregular high frequency modes at KC numbers larger than 3 for a square cylinder, larger than 1 for a diamond cylinder and larger than 3 for a square cylinder with rounded corners. The calculated drag and inertia coefficients are in very good agreement with the experimental data. The calculated vortex patterns are used to explain some of the force coefficient behavior.

The flow behavior in the up- and downstream regions of a square cylinder subject to the modulation of a planar jet issued from the cylinder׳s front surface was studied using the laser-assisted smoke flow visualization method and hot-wire anemometer measurement. Reynolds numbers were from 1628 to 13 000. The drag force experienced by the square cylinder was obtained by measuring the surface pressures on the up- and downstream faces. The temporally evolving smoke flow patterns in the up- and downstream regions were synchronously revealed through the smoke flow visualization. The frequency characteristics of the instability waves in the up- and downstream regions were synchronously detected by the two hot-wire anemometers. Four characteristic flow modes were observed within the different ranges of the injection ratios. At the low injection ratios (IR<1), the ‘swinging jet’ appeared. The jet swung periodically leftward and rightward and formed a fluid bubble on the front surface. The fluid bubble contained a pair of counter-rotating vortices and presented a periodic variation in its height. At moderately low injection ratios (1<IR<4.3), the ‘deflected oscillating jet’ appeared. The jet was deflected in either the left or the right direction and wrapped around one of the edges of the square cylinder. Both the swinging and oscillating motions of the jet in the swinging jet and deflected oscillating jet modes were induced by the periodic feedback pressure signals generated by the vortex shedding in the wake. At the moderately high (4.3<IR<8.3) and high (IR>8.3) injection ratios, the ‘deflection jet’ and ‘penetrating jet’ appeared. The jet detached from the cylinder׳s front surface and penetrated a long distance into the upstream region due to large jet momentum. Neither periodic jet oscillation in the upstream region nor vortex shedding in the wake was observed. The drag coefficient was found to be decreasing quickly with increasing the injection ratio.

This study elucidates the relation between wake vortex shedding and aerodynamic force fluctuations for a low Reynolds number wing from time resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) experimental measurements. The results reveal a periodic lift and drag variation within the shedding cycle and resolve the frequencies of those fluctuations from a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and power spectral density (PSD) analysis. To show the effect of vortex shedding on the body force fluctuations, the evolution of instantaneous aerodynamic forces is compared to the pressure field of the fluid flow and to the vortical structures in the wake of the airfoil. A six step model describing the vortex-force relation is proposed. It shows that changes in lift such as maximum lift and minimum lift are associated with the detachment of a vortex. It also shows that the minimum or local minimum drag value is obtained at the onset formation of a vortex on the airfoil wake. Similarly, the maximum or local maximum drag is obtained at the onset formation of the saddle on the airfoil wake. The model further explains the asymmetry observed in the unsteady drag force evolution. The model can be used to optimize flow control and fluid-structure interaction applications.

The interaction of a rectilinear vortex with an inflated round parachute canopy model was studied experimentally in a water tunnel where the vortex core was aligned with the axis of the canopy. Three different canopy diameters were used, and the canopy model was attached to a streamlined forebody. Dye flow visualization indicated that vortex breakdown was present when the core trajectory was within the canopy opening. Vortex breakdown occurred about one to two canopy diameters upstream of the canopy opening. The vortex core completely disintegrated when it interacted with the forebody near the canopy centerline. The vortex breakdown and disintegration caused unsteady, asymmetric deformations on the canopy surface. A reduction in the time-averaged drag and an increase in the fluctuating drag was observed when the vortex core was within the canopy opening. The disintegration of the vortex core near the canopy centerline lessened the drag reduction brought on by the presence of the core.

Further development of an energy-minimization multiscale modeling approach to simulating two-phase flow under turbulent conditions that considers the size distribution of mesoscale structures, i.e. bubbles and clusters, is presented. User-defined values of minimum and maximum cluster or bubble diameters were specified. A uniform size distribution was first considered as a test case, in which the drag force comprised contributions from each size group. The mathematical form of the objective function describing the energy for suspension and transport was not altered. The heterogeneity index of this new drag modification was then used to simulate pilot-scale circulating fluidized-bed risers involving Geldart group A particles. The results were validated against available experimental data. The model is capable of capturing both axial and radial profiles of flow-field variables.
