If neutrinos have mass it is likely that, as a result of the effect of matter, neutrino flavor eigenstates are converted to mass eigenstates as they emerge from a supernova. In the case of large neutrino mixing angles there can be a significant increase in the mean energy and detected flux of neutrinos from a supernova.  相似文献

We investigate collective flavor oscillations of supernova neutrinos at late stages of the explosion. We first show that the frequently used single-angle (averaged coupling) approximation predicts oscillations close to, or perhaps even inside, the neutrinosphere, potentially invalidating the basic neutrino transport paradigm. Fortunately, we also find that the single-angle approximation breaks down in this regime; in the full multiangle calculation, the oscillations start safely outside the transport region. The new suppression effect is traced to the interplay between the dispersion in the neutrino-neutrino interactions and the vacuum oscillation term.  相似文献

We present results of 3-neutrino flavor evolution simulations for the neutronization burst from an O-Ne-Mg core-collapse supernova. We find that nonlinear neutrino self-coupling engineers a single spectral feature of stepwise conversion in the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy case and in the normal mass hierarchy case, a superposition of two such features corresponding to the vacuum neutrino mass-squared differences associated with solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations. These neutrino spectral features offer a unique potential probe of the conditions in the supernova environment and may allow us to distinguish between O-Ne-Mg and Fe core-collapse supernovae.  相似文献

The Earth effects on the energy spectra of supernova neutrinos are studied. We analyze numerically the time-integrated energy spectra of neutrino in a mantle–core–mantle step function model of the Earth's matter density profile. We consider a realistic frame-work in which there are three active neutrinos whose mass squared differences and mixings are constrained by the present understanding of solar and atmospheric neutrinos. We find that the energy spectra change for some allowed mixing parameters. Especially, the expected number of events at SNO shows characteristic behavior with respect to energy, i.e., a great dip and peak. We show that observations of the Earth effect allow us to identify the solar neutrino solution and to probe the mixing angle θ2.  相似文献

It is known that in supernova explosions, there might be a reverse shock wave in addition to the forward shock wave during the explosion phase, when the mass of supernova is in a certain range. In this paper, we propose to add the reverse shock wave to the previous supernova model, in which only the forward shock wave was included, and thus obtain a new model. By analyzing the resonance condition as well as the density jump in the new model and using the Landau-Zener method, an expression for the crossing probability in high density matter(PH) is given. We proceed to study how PH varies with time and with neutrino energy when both the reverse shock wave and the forward shock wave are considered. From comparison with the previous results, where only the effects of the forward shock wave were considered, it is clear that the reverse shock wave brings significant changes to PH.  相似文献

We study the matter effects for solar neutrino oscillations in a general scheme, without any constraint on the number of sterile neutrinos and the mixing matrix elements, only assuming a realistic hierarchy of neutrino squared-mass differences in which the smallest squared-mass difference is effective in solar neutrino oscillations. The validity of the analytic results is illustrated with a numerical solution of the evolution equation in the simplest case of four-neutrino mixing with the realistic matter density profile inside the Sun.  相似文献

It is shown that the results of the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment, interpreted in terms of nu(mu)<-->nu(tau) flavor transitions, can probe possible decoherence effects induced by new physics (e.g., by quantum gravity) with high sensitivity, supplementing current laboratory tests based on kaon oscillations and on neutron interferometry. By varying the (unknown) energy dependence of such effects, one can either obtain strong limits on their amplitude or use them to find an unconventional solution to the atmospheric nu anomaly based solely on decoherence.  相似文献

The Berry phase of mixed states, here neutrino oscillations, is calculated in an accelerating and rotating reference frame. It turns out to depend on the vacuum mixing angle, the mass-squared difference and on the coupling between the momentum of the neutrino and the spinorial connection. Berry's phase for solar neutrinos and its geometrical aspects are also discussed. Received: 15 December 1999 / Revised version: 9 February 2000 / Published online: 18 May 2000  相似文献

We calculate coherent neutrino and antineutrino flavor transformation in the supernova environment, for the first time including self-consistent coupling of intersecting neutrino and antineutrino trajectories. For neutrino mass-squared difference /deltam2/ = 3 x 10(-3) eV2 we find that in the normal (inverted) mass hierarchy the more tangentially-propagating (radially-propagating) neutrinos and antineutrinos can initiate collective, simultaneous medium-enhanced flavor conversion of these particles across broad ranges of energy and propagation direction. Accompanying alterations in neutrino and antineutrino energy spectra and fluxes could affect supernova nucleosynthesis and the expected neutrino signal.  相似文献

We examine the effects of resonant neutrino oscillations, proposed as a solution to the solar neutrino puzzle, on the neutrino signature of a Type II supernova. We find that, for parameters corresponding to an adiabatic conversion of most of the 8B neutrino flux, the supernova neutrino signal in a water-Čerenkov detector is altered in the following way: (1) The isotropic-to-directional event ratio increases; (2) The short time scale neutronization burst signal decreases by a factor 7, perhaps rendering it unobservable. Detection of these changes would allow one to distinguish between neutrino oscillations and solar model alterations as solutions to the solar neutrino problem. We also note that mixing of the higher energy νμ and νr's to νe's will enhance detection of the thermally produced ν-flux.  相似文献

We study type II supernova signatures of neutrino mass generation via symmetry breaking at a scale in the range from keV to MeV. The scalar responsible for symmetry breaking is thermalized in the supernova core and restores the symmetry. The neutrinos from scalar decays have about half the average energy of thermal neutrinos. The Bose-Einstein distribution of the scalars can be established with a megaton water Cerenkov detector. The discovery of the bimodal neutrino flux is, however, well within the reach of the Super-Kamiokande detector, without a detailed knowledge of the supernova parameters.  相似文献

The propagation of an intense laser pulse in an under-dense plasma induces a plasma wake that is suitable for the acceleration of electrons to relativistic energies. For an ultra-intense laser pulse which has a longitudinal size shorter than the plasma wavelength, λp, instead of a periodic plasma wave, a cavity free from cold plasma electrons, called a bubble, is formed behind the laser pulse. An intense charge separation electric field inside the moving bubble can capture the electrons at the base of the bubble and accelerate them with a narrow energy spread. In the nonlinear bubble regime, due to localized depletion at the front of the pulse during its propagation through the plasma, the phase shift between carrier waves and pulse envelope plays an important role in plasma response. The carrier–envelope phase(CEP) breaks down the symmetric transverse ponderomotive force of the laser pulse that makes the bubble structure unstable. Our studies using a series of two-dimensional(2D) particle-in-cell(PIC) simulations show that the frequency-chirped laser pulses are more effective in controlling the pulse depletion rate and consequently the effect of the CEP in the bubble regime. The results indicate that the utilization of a positively chirped laser pulse leads to an increase in rate of erosion of the leading edge of the pulse that rapidly results in the formation of a steep intensity gradient at the front of the pulse. A more unstable bubble structure, the self-injections in different positions, and high dark current are the results of using a positively chirped laser pulse. For a negatively chirped laser pulse, the pulse depletion process is compensated during the propagation of the pulse in plasma in such a way that results in a more stable bubble shape and therefore, a localized electron bunch is produced during the acceleration process. As a result, by the proper choice of chirping, one can tune the number of self-injected electrons, the size of accelerated bunch and its energy spectrum to the values required for practical applications.  相似文献

Motivated by recent experimental data, we study solar neutrino oscillations in the range δm2/E ε [10−10, 10−7] eV2/MeV. In this range vacuum oscillations become increasingly affected by (solar and terrestrial) matter effects for increasing δm2, smoothly reaching the MSW regime. A numerical study of matter effects in such “quasi-vacuum” regime is performed. The results are applied to the analysis of the recent solar neutrino phenomenology.  相似文献
