The study of chain-transfer reactions in thermal and AIBN-initiated polymerization of styrene is aimed at the determination of transfer constants to the solvents at 60°C. For thermal polymerization the transfer constants Cs to acetone, chloroform, and chloroform mixed with acetone are 3.2 × 10?5, 4.1 × 10?5, and 4.4 × 10?5, respectively. In the case of AIBN-initiated polymerization, the transfer constant of chloroform in the mixture acetone–chloroform is Cs = 3.3 × 10?4. All these transfer constants are average values. It has been found that neither acetone nor chloroform satisfies the Mayo equation in the presence of transfer agent very well. These anomalies can be explained by assuming a complexation phenomenon. The changes in the polarity and resonance are taken into account. It is considered that in the chain-transfer reactions under investigation, the association or complex-forming ability of solvent and monomer or polymer play a role. In studying the chain-transfer reaction in the acetone–chloroform solvent mixture another phenomenon affecting the determination of the chain transfer constant is assumed. This phenomenon consists in formation of associates in which both solvents participate.  相似文献

The effect of a range of 10 organic nitriles on the radiation-induced polymerization of styrene was studied. A dose rate of 4.4 rad s?1 was used. A rate of polymerization of styrene (1.744 mol L?1 of toluene solution) of 5.0 × 10?7 mol L?1 s?1 was found. With organic nitriles present (styrene:nitrile ratio of 1:0.28) the rate of polymerization increased. Rates in the range of 5.5 × 10?7 ?5.2 × 10?6 mol L?1 s?1, depending on the nitrile present, were obtained. The polymers were partially characterized and evidence of involvement of each of the nitriles in the polymer chains was revealed. The increase in rate of polymerization has been attributed to the part played by nitrile radicals in the initiation of styrene polymerization. Radical yield values [as G(nitrile radical)] were derived from the relevant rate expressions. Values ranged from 2.7 to 49.5, depending on the particular nitrile. Corresponding values of G(nitrile radical) in the range of 5.1–129.4 were obtained by the manipulation of number-average molar mass data. Values of kpkt of approximately 2 × 10?5 L mol?1 s?1 were found. Trommsdorff types of effect are absent from these systems.  相似文献

Solution polymerization of MMA, with pyridine as the solvent and BZ2O2 and AIBN as thermal initiators, was studied kinetically at 60°C. The monomer exponent varied from 0.45 to 0.91 as [BZ2O2] was increased from 1 × 10?2 to 30 × 10?2 mole/liter in a concentration range of 8.3-4.6 mole/liter for MMA. For AIBN-initiated polymerization the monomer exponent remained constant at 0.69 as [AIBN] varied from 0.4 × 10?2 to 1.0 × 10?2 mole/liter in the same concentration range for MMA. The k2p/kt Value increased in both cases with an increase in pyridine concentration in the system. This was explained in terms of an increase in the kp value, which was due presumably to the increased reactivity of the chain radicals by donor-acceptor interaction between the molecules of solvent pyridine and propagating PMMA radicals and in terms of lowering the kt value for the diffusion-controlled termination reaction due to an increase in the medium viscosity and pyridine content.  相似文献

The bulk polymerization of 2‐ethylhexyl acrylate (2‐EHA), induced by a pulsed electron beam, was investigated with pulse radiolysis, gravimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The roles of the dose rate, pulse frequency, and added acrylic acid (AA) in the polymerization of 2‐EHA were examined at ambient temperature. In the range of 12.6–71.2 Gy/pulse, the polymerization of 2‐EHA was dose‐rate‐dependent: at the same total dose, a lower dose rate yielded a higher conversion. Also, a lower pulse rate gave a higher conversion at the same total dose. The addition of up to 10 wt % AA showed no increase in the conversion of 2‐EHA at a low conversion (8 kGy), but at a higher conversion (16 kGy), a 20 wt % increase in the conversion of 2‐EHA was observed. The estimated values (1.6 ± 0.3) × 10?3 (dm3 s)3/2 mol?1 s?1/2 for kp(G/2kt)1/2 and 2.6 ± 0.8 dm3 s J?1 for 2ktG (where kp is the rate constant of propagation, kt is the rate constant of bimolecular termination, and G is the yield of free radicals) were obtained at relatively low conversions. The reaction rate constant of the addition of 2‐EHA· free radicals to the monomer was measured by pulse radiolysis and found to be 2.8 × 102 mol?1 dm3 s?1. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aqueous polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the bromate—ferrous redox system in aqueous sulfuric acid was studied under nitrogen atmosphere. The rate of polymerization increased with increasing concentration of ferrous in the range of 0.25-1 × 10?2M. The percentage of conversion increased with increasing concentration of the catalyst, but beyond 2.5 × 10?3M there was a decreasing trend in the rate of polymerization. The rate varied linearly with [monomer]. The initial rate of polymerization as well as the maximum conversion increased within the range of 1–2.5 × 10?3M KBrO3, but beyond 2.5 × 10?3M the rate of polymerization decreased. The initial rate and limiting conversion increased with increasing polymerization temperature in the range 30–40°C; beyond 40°C they decreased. The effect of certain neutral salts, water-miscible solvents, complexing agents, and copper sulfate concentration on the rate of polymerization was investigated.  相似文献

Nanosecond laser photolytic studies of 4-nitro-N,N-dimethylnaphthylamine (4-NDMNA) in nonpolar and polar solvents at room temperature show a transient species with an absorption maximum in the 500-510-nm range. This species is assigned to the lowest triplet excited state of 4-NDMNA. The absorption maximum of this state is independent of solvent polarity, and its lifetime is a function of the hydrogen donor efficiency of the solvent. In n-hexane the lifetime 1/k of the triplet state is 9.1 × 10?6 sec, while in acetonitrile 1/k is 2.0 × 10?7 sec. The hydrogen abstraction rate constant kH of the triplet state with tributyl tin hydride (Bu3SnH) in n-hexane is 1.7 × 107M?1·sec?1, while in the case of isopropyl alcohol as hydrogen donor, kH is 4.0 × 107M?1·sec?1. The activation energy for the hydrogen abstraction by the triplet state from Bu3SnH in deaerated n-hexane is 0.6 kcal/mol. The lack of spectral shift with increasing solvent polarity, and the appreciable hydrogen abstraction reactivity of the triplet state, also independent of solvent polarity, seem to indicate that this excited state is an n-π* state which retains its n-π* character even in polar media.  相似文献

Interfacial tension (IFT) (γift, N m?1) of benzene‐water; and surface tensions (γ, N m?1) and viscosities (η, N s m?2) of solvents methanol, ethanol, glycerol, ethyl acetate, n‐hexane, diethyl ether, chloroform, benzene, carbon tetrachloride [CCl4], formic acid, Acetonitril, and dimethylformamide [DMF] were measured with Survismeter‐IFT. The ± 1.1 × 10?5 N m?1, ± 1.3 × 10?5 N m?1, and ± 1.1 × 10?5 N s m?2 deviations in respective values were noted. It has 10 times better accuracy than those of individual methods. The survismeter is inexpensive minimizing 2/3 each of consumables, human efforts, time, and infrastructure, cutting down 80% of the waste disposed the environment. The (alkyl)-bis(dimethylglyoximato)pyridinecobalt attached to polychloromethylstyrene by a cobalt–carbon bond was prepared by the reaction of Co(II)(DH)2Py with polychloromethylstyrene in benzene. The fraction of p-vinylbenzyl·Co(DH)2Py introduced to the polymer was 8.1 and 2.1 mole %. The photodecomposition of the polymer-bonded cobaloxime was investigated by following the change of the visible spectrum. The rate constant kdec of the polymer-bonded cobaloxime was 1.1 × 10?2 sec?1 in benzene; it is one-fourth of that of its monomeric analog, benzyl·Co(DH)2Py. The kdec values of the cobaloximes were also measured in benzene–dimethyl sulfoxide mixed solvents, and the polymer effects were discussed. The dependence of the photodecomposition on energy of the irradiation light was investigated, and it was found that the absorption band near 470 nm is important for the photodecomposition of the cobalt–carbon bond. Spectroscopic measurements of the ligand exchange reaction of polymer-bonded cobaloxime with pyridine in dimethyl sulfoxide gave a larger equilibrium constant (1.2 × 104 liter/mole) than that of benzyl·Co(DH)2Py (9.4 × 102 liter/mole). The kinetic data of the ligand exchange reaction indicated that the larger equilibrium constant for the polymeric system is due to the smaller rate constant of the reverse reaction. The thermodynamic parameters were also obtained.  相似文献

Nanosecond spectroscopic and kinetic studies of 4-nitronaphthylamine (4-NO2NA) in aerated and deaerated nonpolar solvents at room temperature show a transient species with absorption maxima at 470 and 665 nm. The rate constant for the decay of this species in deaerated benzene is 6.7 × 105 sec?1, while in aerated benzene solutions the species is quenched by oxygen with arate constant k = 2.0 × 109M?1·sec?1. The transient absorption at 470and 665 nm is assigned to the lowest triplet excited state of 4-NO2NA. In polar solvents, however, electronic excitation of 4-NO2NA does not lead to any detectable transient absorption between 400 and 800 nm for the temperature range of 25 to ?150°C. This is attributed to lack of intersystem crossing of 4-NO2NA in polar solvents.  相似文献

The free‐radical copolymerization of m‐isopropenyl‐α,α′‐dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (TMI) and styrene was studied with 1H NMR kinetic experiments at 70 °C. Monomer conversion vs time data were used to determine the ratio kp × kt?0.5 for various comonomer mixture compositions (where kp is the propagation rate coefficient and kt is the termination rate coefficient). The ratio kp × kt?0.5 varied from 25.9 × 10?3 L0.5 mol?0.5 s?0.5 for pure styrene to 2.03 × 10?3 L0.5 mol?0.5 s?0.5 for 73 mol % TMI, indicating a significant decrease in the rate of polymerization with increasing TMI content in the reaction mixture. Traces of the individual monomer conversion versus time were used to map out the comonomer mixture composition drift up to overall monomer conversions of 35%. Within this conversion range, a slight but significant depletion of styrene in the monomer feed was observed. This depletion became more pronounced at higher levels of TMI in the initial comonomer mixture. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 1064–1074, 2002  相似文献

The temperature dependence of the rate coefficients for the OH radical reactions with toluene, benzene, o-cresol, m-cresol, p-cresol, phenol, and benzaldehyde were measured by the competitive technique under simulated atmospheric conditions over the temperature range 258–373 K. The relative rate coefficients obtained were placed on an absolute basis using evaluated rate coefficients for the corresponding reference compounds. Based on the rate coefficient k(OH + 2,3-dimethylbutane) = 6.2 × 10?12 cm3 molecule?1s?1, independent of temperature, the rate coefficient for toluene kOH = 0.79 × 10?12 exp[(614 ± 114)/T] cm3 molecule?1 s?1 over the temperature range 284–363 K was determined. The following rate coefficients in units of cm3 molecule?1 s?1 were determined relative to the rate coefficient k(OH + 1,3-butadiene) = 1.48 × 10?11 exp(448/T) cm3 molecule?1 s?1: o-cresol; kOH = 9.8 × 10?13 exp[(1166 ± 248)/T]; 301–373 K; p-cresol; kOH = 2.21 × 10?12 exp[(943 ± 449)/T]; 301–373 K; and phenol, kOH = 3.7 × 10?13 exp[(1267 ± 233)/T]; 301–373 K. The rate coefficient for benzaldehyde kOH = 5.32 × 10?12 exp[(243 ± 85)/T], 294–343 K was determined relative to the rate coefficient k(OH + diethyl ether) = 7.3 × 10?12 exp(158/T) cm3 molecule?1 s?1. The data have been compared to the available literature data and where possible evaluated rate coefficients have been deduced or updated. Using the evaluated rate coefficient k(OH + toluene) = 1.59 × 10?12 exp[(396 ± 105)/T] cm3 molecule?1 s?1, 213–363 K, the following rate coefficient for benzene has been determined kOH = 2.58 × 10?12 exp[(?231 ± 84)/T] cm3 molecule?1 s?1 over the temperature range 274–363 K and the rate coefficent for m-cresol, kOH = 5.17 × 10?12 exp[(686 ± 231)/T] cm3 molecule?1 s?1, 299–373 K was determined relative to the evaluated rate coefficient k(OH + o-cresol) = 2.1 × 10?12 exp[(881 ± 356)/T] cm3 molecule?1 s?1. The tropospheric lifetimes of the aromatic compounds studied were calculated relative to that for 1,1,1-triclorethane = 6.3 years at 277 K. The lifetimes range from 6 h for m-cresol to 15.5 days for benzene. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The kinetics of the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of imidazole (Im), 2-methylimidazole (2MIm), or benz-imidazole (BIm) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 15–40°C was investigated by dilatometry. The rate of polymerization, Rp , was expressed by Rp = k[Im] [MMA]2, where k = 3.0 × 10?6 L2/(mol2 s) in THF at 30°C. The overall activation energy, Ea , was 6.9 kcal/mol for the Im system and 7.3 kcal/mol for the 2MIm system. The relation between logRp and 1 T was not linear for the BIm system. The polymers obtained were soluble in acetone, chloroform, benzene, and THF. The melting points of the polymers were in the range of 258–280°C. The 1H-NMR spectra indicated that the polymers were made up of about 58–72% of syndiotactic structure. The polymerization mechanism is discussed on the basis of these results.  相似文献

The kinetics of methoxymethyl methacrylate (MOMA) homopolymerization has been investigated in benzene, using azobis(isobutyronitrile) as an initiator. The rate of polymerization (Rp) could be expressed by Rp = k[AIBN]0.5 [MOMA]1.19. The overall activation energy was calculated to be 73.2 kJ/mol. Kinetic constants for MOMA polymerization were obtained as follows: kp/kt1/2 = 0.091 L1/2 · mol?1/2 · s?1/2; 2fkd = 1.37 × 10?5 s?1. The values of K and a in the Mark–Houwink equation, [η] = KMa, where K = 5.89 × 10?5 and a = 0.82 when M = M n and the solvent was benzene. The relative reactivity ratios of MOMA (M2) copolymerizations with styrene (r1 = 0.40, r2 = 0.58) were obtained. Applying the Q-e scheme led to Q = 0.78 and e = 0.67. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of poly(MOMA) was observed to be 64°C by DSC. Thermogravimetry of poly(MOMA) showed a 10% weight loss at 230°C in air.  相似文献

3-Methyl-3-(o-tolyl)-1,2-dioxetane 1 and 3-methyl-4-(o-bromophenyl)-1,2-dioxetane 2 were synthesized in low yield by the β-bromo hydroperoxide method. The activation parameters were determined by the chemilumin-escence method (for 1 ΔG? = 24.7 ± 0.3 kcal/mol, ΔH? = 25.4, ΔS? = + 1.9 e.u., k60 = 3.4 × 10?4s?1; for 2 ΔG? = 24.7 ± 0.4 kcal/mol, ΔH? = 24.7, ΔS? = 0.0 e.u., k60 = 4.1 × 10?4s?1). Thermolysis of 1–2 directly produced high yields of excited triplets as expected for this type of dioxetane [triplet chemiexcitation yields (?7) for 1 0.03; for 2 0.02; the ?T/?S ratios were estimated to be approximately 200 for both compounds]. The effect of ortho-aryl substituents was inconsistent with electronic effects. The ortho substitution in 1–2 resulted in a marked increase in stability of the dioxetanes. The results are discussed in relation to a diradical-like mechanism.  相似文献

Polymerization of THF in CCl4 solvent was initiated with 1,3-dioxolan-2-ylium eations with AsF6?, PF6?, and SbF6? anions as well as with esters of fluorosulfonic and trifluoromethanesulfonic acids. With these esters polymerization proceeds with a marked acceleration period, due to slow initiation. The corresponding rate constants of initiation and their dependence on the polarity of the THF/CCl4 mixture were determined. The rate constant of propagation on the macroion-pairs (kp±) of the polytetrahydrofurylium cation with AsF6?, PF6?, and SbF6? and CF3SO3?, anions was found to be independent in CCl4 solvent on the anion structure and given by the expression: kp± = 2.93 × 10?2 exp {?4.7 × 103/T} at [THF]0 = 8.0M. This constant depends on the polarity of the polymerization mixture, and at 25°C for the THF-CCl4 system, kp± = 1.78 × 10?2 exp {?4.9/D}; thus, in CCl4 at [THF]0 = 8.0M, and at 25° kp± = 4.0 × 10?21/mole-sec. In the polymerization with derivatives of CF3SO3H (able to form the corresponding macroester) the overall polymerization rate is much lower than that with complex anions because of the reversible conversion of the macroion-pairs into the macroester (internal return). The macroester is much less reactive than the macroionpair (102–103 times) in the monomer addition reaction. At [THF]0 = 8.0M and at 25°C, 96.5% of the growing species exists in the macroester form. Polymerization of THF initiated with derivatives of CF3SO3H is a subject of a strong special salt-effect. At a sufficiently high ratio of [AgSbF6] to [I]0, where the initiator I is C2H5OSO2CF3, the overall polymerization rate is equal to that observed for the polymerization of THF on the macroion-pairs, since the internal return within the triflate ion-pair (the macroester formation) is eliminated and polymerization proceeds on the macroion-pairs with SbF6- anions exclusively.  相似文献

Abstract

Gamma ray induced polymerization of N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) in aqueous solution has been studied. Rates of polymerization have been determined as a function of dose, dose rate, and monomer concentration. Polymerization mechanism was found to be free radical with chain propagation step involving ring formation. About 90% conversion was achieved in 25 minutes of irradiation (dose rate 1.54 × 1018 eV dm?3 s?1) of MBA solution (36 mmol). The polymerization rates were found to vary from 1.9 × 10 4 to 5.6 × 10?4 mol dm?3 s?1 when the monomer concentrations were varied between 80–164 mmols. The value of the constant kp/kt 1/2 was calculated to be 9.85 for the dose rate of 1.54 × 1018 eV dm?3 s?1. The precipitated polymer showed mono disperse particles of diameter of about 170 nm. The polymer was found to be highly crosslinked and insoluble in any solvent.  相似文献

2,2,4-Trimethyl-3-on-1-pentyl methacrylate (TMPM) was first synthesized from the condensation reaction of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1-pentanol-3-on with methacrylic acid. Second, the polymerization of TMPM and the copolymerization of TMPM with styrene (St) were carried out in benzene at 60°C, using 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. As the result of kinetic investigation, the rate of polymerization (Rp) could be expressed by: Rp = k[AIBN]0.5 [TMPM]1.0. Kinetic constants of polymerization of TMPM were obtained as follows: kp/k = 0.27 dm3/2 mole?1/2 sec?1/2, 2fkd = 1.23 × 10?5 sec?1, f = 0.73, Cm = 2.6 × 10?5, Cs = 1.1 × 10?5. From the results the reactivity of TMPM was found to be larger than that of methyl methacrylate. The overall activation energy was calculated to be 110 kJ mole?1. The following monomer reactivity ratios and Q, e values were obtained: TMPM(M1) ? St(M2): r1 = 1.50, r2 = 0.14, Q1 = 2.63, E1 = 0.45.  相似文献

The kinetics of γ-radiation-induced free-radical polymerization of styrene were studied over the temperature range 0–50°C at radiation intensities of 9.5 × 104, 3.1 × 105, 4.0 × 105, and 1.0 × 106 rad/hr. The overall rate of polymerization was found to be proportional to the 0.44–0.49 power of radiation intensity, and the overall activation energy for the radiation-induced free-radical polymerization of styrene was 6.0–6.3 kcal/mole. Values of the kinetic constants, kp2/kt and ktrm/kp, were calculated from the overall polymerization rates and the number-average molecular weights. Gelpermeation chromatography was used to determine the number-average molecular weight M?n, the weight-average molecular weight M?w, and the polydispersity ratio M?w/M?n, of the product polystyrene. The polydispersity ratios of the radiation-polymerized polystyrene were found to lie between 1.80 and 2.00. Significant differences were observed in the polydispersity ratios of chemically initiated and radiation-induced polystyrenes. The radiation chemical yield, G(styrene), was calculated to be 0.5–0.8.  相似文献

Kinetics of the substitution reaction of solvent molecule in uranyl(VI) Schiff base complexes by tri‐n‐butylposphine as the entering nucleophile in acetonitrile at 10–40°C was studied spectrophotometrically. The second‐order rate constants for the substitution reaction of the solvent molecule were found to be (8.8 ± 0.5) × 10?3, (5.3 ± 0.2) × 10?3, (7.5 ± 0.3) × 10?3, (6.1 ± 0.3) × 10?3, (13.5 ± 1.6) × 10?3, (13.2 ± 0.9) × 10?3, (52.9 ± 0.2) × 10?3, and (88.1 ± 0.6) × 10?3 M?1 s?1 at 40°C for [UO2(Schiff base)(CH3CN)], where Schiff base = L1–L8, respectively. In a temperature dependence study, the activation parameters ΔH# and ΔS# for the reaction of uranyl complexes with PBu3 were determined. From the linear rate dependence on the concentration of PBu3, the span of k2 values and the large negative values of the activation entropy, an associative (A) mechanism is deduced for the solvent substitution. By comparing the second‐order rate constants k2, it was concluded that the steric and the electronic properties of the complexes were important for the rate of the reactions.  相似文献

Various oxodipyrromethenes with varying β-substituents have been synthesized and their reaction with singlet oxygen studied. The rates of chemical reactivity (kR) and physical quenching (kQ) of singlet oxygen by those substrates approach the diffusion threshold in both chloroform and methanol solvents, with kQ generally larger than kR in chloroform but of comparable magnitude in methanol. The range of (kQ+kR) values is 0.2–4.2 × 109 M?1 s?1.  相似文献
