In [3] U. Ott introduced a Bruck-Ryser abstract theorem concerning lattices of an R-module. As one of the applications of this theorem, he obtained a new proof of the Bruck-Ryser theorem for finite projective planes and studied p-curves in a projective plane. In this paper, we apply the Bruck-Ryser abstract theorem in order to give a new proof of the Bruck-Ryser-Chowla theorem for symmetric (v, k, )-design with (v, k, )=1, and to study p-curves in arbitrary symmetric designs.  相似文献

Summary The study of the finite element approximation to nonlinear second order elliptic boundary value problems with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions is presented. In the discretization variational crimes are commited (approximation of the given domain by a polygonal one, numerical integration). With the assumption that the corresponding operator is strongly monotone and Lipschitz-continuous and that the exact solutionuH 1(), the convergence of the method is proved; under the additional assumptionuH 2(), the rate of convergenceO(h) is derived without the use of Green's theorem.  相似文献

The main theorem of this paper (Lagrange multiplier theorem) states that the successive minima of a certainnorm h on n (without constraints) coincide with the j 's up to bounded factors. Moreover, this norm is constructed explicitly. We show that the r-dominated polynomials on p(2 p ) are integral on 1, and give examples proving that the converse is not true. We characterize when the 2-homogeneous, diagonal polynomials on p(1 < p ) are r-dominated. We outline a twisted analogue of the Mishchenko–Kasparov approach to prove the Novikov conjecture on the homotopy invariance of the higher signatures. Using our approach, we give a new and simple proof of the homotopy invariance of the higher signatures associated to all cohomology classes of the classifying space that belong to the subring of the cohomology ring of the classifying space that is generated by cohomology classes of degree less than or equal to 2, a result that was first established by Connes and Gromov and Moscovici using other methods. A key new ingredient is the construction of a tautological C* r (, )-bundle and connection, which can be used to construct a C* r (, )-index that lies in the Grothendieck group of C* r (, ), where is a multiplier on the discrete group corresponding to a degree 2 cohomology class. We also utilise a main result of Hilsum and Skandalis to establish our theorem.  相似文献

A partial regularity theorem is established for a particular class of weak solutions to the systemu/t– div(K(u)u)=(u)¦¦2, div((u))=0 on a bounded domain inR N . Under our assumptions, (u) may exhibit exponential decay, and thus the system may be degenerate. On one hand, we restrict the class of functions and on the other we enlarge the class of measures which are allowed. As an example, consider the inequality (J)(f(x) d) A (f(x) d, d d = 1. Topological Hochschild homology is calculated for the rings /p[x]/(f(x)) (where p is prime and f(x) /p[x] any polynomial), [x]/(x n) and [x]/(x n–1). A spectral sequence argument is used for calculating the homology of the topological Hochschild homology spectrum, from which its stable homotopy structure can be read off since the spectrum is known for a priori reasons to be a restricted product of Eilenberg-MacLane spectra.  相似文献

In this paper we study the nonlinear stability and the convergence of some simple finite-difference schemes for the numerical solution of problems involving the good Boussinesq equation. Summary A finite element method using piecewise polynomials of degree k is used to approximate the problem u+u=f, >0 a small parameter. A very irregular mesh is used. On this mesh error estimates of order0(h k+1) are obtained uniformly in ,h the maximum stepsize, fork2. The condition number of the system of linear equations one has to solve in order to get the approximation is estimated. Extension of the results to more complicated problems is briefly indicated. Summary In this paper we present a product quadrature rule for the discretization of the well-known linear transport equation in slab geometry. In particular we give an algorithm for constructing the weights of the rule and prove that the order of convergence isO(n –3+ ), >0 small as we like. Numerical examples are given, and our formula is also compared with product Simpson rules. Let K be a commutative hypergroup with the Haar measure . In the present paper we investigate whether the maximal ideals in L1(K,) have bounded approximate identities. We will show that the existence of a bounded approximate identity is equivalent to the existence of certain functionals on the space L(K,). Assume that for the approximate solution of an elliptic differential equation in a bounded domain , under a natural boundary condition, one applies the Galerkin method with polynomial coordinate functions. One gives sufficient conditions, imposed on the exact solutionu *, which ensure the convergence of the derivatives of order k of the approximate solutions, uniformly or in the mean in or in any interior subdomain. Summary In this paper new Quasi-Newton methods of rank-one type for solving the unconstrained minimization problem are developed. The methods belong to the Oren-Luenberger class (for negative parameters k ) and they generate always positive definite updating matrices. Moreover it is shown that these methods are invariant by scaling of the objective function.

Summary We discuss in this paper a non-homogeneous Poisson process A driven by an almost periodic intensity function. We give the stationary version A * and the Palm version A 0 corresponding to A *. Let (T i ,i) be the inter-point distance sequence in A and (T i 0 ,i) in A 0. We prove that forj, the sequence (T i+j,i) converges in distribution to (T i 0 ,i). Summary In this paper we perform a round-off error analysis of descent methods for solving a liner systemAx=b, whereA is supposed to be symmetric and positive definite. This leads to a general result on the attainable accuracy of the computed sequence {x i } when the method is performed in floating point arithmetic. The general theory is applied to the Gauss-Southwell method and the gradient method.
