For the test of sphericity, Ledoit and Wolf [Ann. Statist. 30 (2002) 1081-1102] proposed a statistic which is robust against high dimensionality. In this paper, we consider a natural generalization of their statistic for the test that the smallest eigenvalues of a covariance matrix are equal. Some inequalities are obtained for sums of eigenvalues and sums of squared eigenvalues. These bounds permit us to obtain the asymptotic null distribution of our statistic, as the dimensionality and sample size go to infinity together, by using distributional results obtained by Ledoit and Wolf [Ann. Statist. 30 (2002) 1081-1102]. Some empirical results comparing our test with the likelihood ratio test are also given.  相似文献

This paper investigates the asymptotic properties of the likelihood ratio statistic for testing homogeneity in a bivariate normal mixture model with known covariance. The asymptotic null distributions of the likelihood ratio statistic and a modified likelihood ratio statistic are obtained in explicit form. The distributions are identical. The results of a small simulation study to approximate the null distribution are presented.  相似文献

We consider the efficiency and the power of the normal theory test for independence after a Box-Cox transformation. We obtain an expression for the correlation between the variates after a Box-Cox transformation in terms of the correlation on the normal scale. We discuss the efficiency of test of independence after a Box-Cox transformation and show that for the family considered it is always more efficient to conduct the test of independence based on Pearson correlation coefficient after transformation to normality. Power of test of independence before and after a Box-Cox transformation is studied for a finite sample size using Monte Carlo simulation. Our results show that we can increase the power of the normal-theory test for independence after estimating the transformation parameter from the data. The procedure has application for generating non-negative random variables with prescribed correlation.  相似文献

In this paper we show how, based on a decomposition of the likelihood ratio test for sphericity into two independent tests and a suitably developed decomposition of the characteristic function of the logarithm of the likelihood ratio test statistic to test independence in a set of variates, we may obtain extremely well-fitting near-exact distributions for both test statistics. Since both test statistics have the distribution of the product of independent Beta random variables, it is possible to obtain near-exact distributions for both statistics in the form of Generalized Near-Integer Gamma distributions or mixtures of these distributions. For the independence test statistic, numerical studies and comparisons with asymptotic distributions proposed by other authors show the extremely high accuracy of the near-exact distributions developed as approximations to the exact distribution. Concerning the sphericity test statistic, comparisons with formerly developed near-exact distributions show the advantages of these new near-exact distributions.  相似文献

A weighted multivariate signed-rank test is introduced for an analysis of multivariate clustered data. Observations in different clusters may then get different weights. The test provides a robust and efficient alternative to normal theory based methods. Asymptotic theory is developed to find the approximate p-value as well as to calculate the limiting Pitman efficiency of the test. A conditionally distribution-free version of the test is also discussed. The finite-sample behavior of different versions of the test statistic is explored by simulations and the new test is compared to the unweighted and weighted versions of Hotelling’s T2 test and the multivariate spatial sign test introduced in [D. Larocque, J. Nevalainen, H. Oja, A weighted multivariate sign test for cluster-correlated data, Biometrika 94 (2007) 267-283]. Finally, a real data example is used to illustrate the theory.  相似文献

Some high-dimensional tests for a one-way MANOVA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A statistic is proposed for testing the equality of the mean vectors in a one-way multivariate analysis of variance. The asymptotic null distribution of this statistic, as both the sample size and the number of variables go to infinity, is shown to be normal. Thus, this test can be used when the number of variables is not small relative to the sample size. In particular, it can be used when the number of variables exceeds the degrees of freedom for error, a situation in which standard MANOVA tests are invalid. A related statistic, also having an asymptotic normal distribution, is developed for tests concerning the dimensionality of the hyperplane formed by the population mean vectors. The finite sample size performances of the normal approximations are evaluated in a simulation study.  相似文献

The classical theory for testing the null hypothesis that a set of canonical correlation coefficients is zero leads to a chi-square test under the assumption of multi-normality. The test has been used in the context of dimension reduction. In this paper, we study the limiting distribution of the test statistic without the normality assumption, and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the chi-square limiting distribution to hold. Implications of the result are also discussed for the problem of dimension reduction.  相似文献

A trace test for the mean parameters of the growth curve model is proposed. It is constructed using the restricted maximum likelihood followed by an estimated likelihood ratio approach. The statistic reduces to the Lawley-Hotelling trace test for the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) models. Our test statistic is, therefore, a natural extension of the classical trace test to GMANOVA models. We show that the distribution of the test under the null hypothesis does not depend on the unknown covariance matrix Σ. We also show that the distributions under the null and alternative hypotheses can be represented as sums of weighted central and non-central chi-square random variables, respectively. Under the null hypothesis, the Satterthwaite approximation is used to get an approximate critical point. A novel Satterthwaite type approximation is proposed to obtain an approximate power. A simulation study is performed to evaluate the performance of our proposed test and numerical examples are provided as illustrations.  相似文献

The usual assumption in multivariate hypothesis testing is that the sample consists of n independent, identically distributed Gaussian m-vectors. In this paper this assumption is weakened by considering a class of distributions for which the vector observations are not necessarily either Gaussian or independent. This class contains the elliptically symmetric laws with densities of the form f(X(n × m)) = ψ[tr(X ? M)′ (X ? M?1]. For testing the equality of k scale matrices and for the sphericity hypothesis it is shown, by using the structure of the underlying distribution rather than any specific form of the density, that the usual invariant normal-theory tests are exactly robust, for both the null and non-null cases, under this wider class.  相似文献

We consider here the distributions of order statistics and linear combinations of order statistics from an elliptical distribution. We show that these distributions can be expressed as mixtures of unified skew-elliptical distributions, and then use these mixture representations to derive their moment generating functions and moments, when they exist.  相似文献

For the family of multivariate normal distribution functions, Stein's Lemma presents a useful tool for calculating covariances between functions of the component random variables. Motivated by applications to corporate finance, we prove a generalization of Stein's Lemma to the family of elliptical distributions.  相似文献

We propose a formal test of separability of covariance models based on a likelihood ratio statistic. The test is developed in the context of multivariate repeated measures (for example, several variables measured at multiple times on many subjects), but can also apply to a replicated spatio-temporal process and to problems in meteorology, where horizontal and vertical covariances are often assumed to be separable. Separable models are a common way to model spatio-temporal covariances because of the computational benefits resulting from the joint space-time covariance being factored into the product of a covariance function that depends only on space and a covariance function that depends only on time. We show that when the null hypothesis of separability holds, the distribution of the test statistic does not depend on the type of separable model. Thus, it is possible to develop reference distributions of the test statistic under the null hypothesis. These distributions are used to evaluate the power of the test for certain nonseparable models. The test does not require second-order stationarity, isotropy, or specification of a covariance model. We apply the test to a multivariate repeated measures problem.  相似文献

A test of uniformity on the shape space Σmk is presented, together with modifications of the test statistic which bring its null distribution close to the large-sample asymptotic distribution. The asymptotic distribution under suitable local alternatives to uniformity is given. A family of distributions on Σmk is proposed, which is suitable for modelling shapes given by landmarks which are almost collinear.  相似文献

The estimation problem of the parameters in a symmetry model for categorical data has been considered for many authors in the statistical literature (for example, Bowker (1948) [1], Ireland et al. (1969) [2], Quade and Salama (1975) [3], Cressie and Read (1988) [4], Menéndez et al. (2005) [5]) without using uncertain prior information. It is well known that many new and interesting estimators, using uncertain prior information, have been studied by a host of researchers in different statistical models, and many papers have been published on this topic (see Saleh (2006) [9] and references therein). In this paper, we consider the symmetry model of categorical data and we study, for the first time, some new estimators when non-sample information about the symmetry of the probabilities is considered. The decision to use a “restricted” estimator or an “unrestricted” estimator is based on the outcome of a preliminary test, and then a shrinkage technique is used. It is interesting to note that we present a unified study in the sense that we consider not only the maximum likelihood estimator and likelihood ratio test or chi-square test statistic but we consider minimum phi-divergence estimators and phi-divergence test statistics. Families of minimum phi-divergence estimators and phi-divergence test statistics are wide classes of estimators and test statistics that contain as a particular case the maximum likelihood estimator, likelihood ratio test and chi-square test statistic. In an asymptotic set-up, the biases and the risk under the squared loss function for the proposed estimators are derived and compared. A numerical example clarifies the content of the paper.  相似文献

We consider the class of multivariate distributions that gives the distribution of the sum of uncorrelated random variables by the product of their marginal distributions. This class is defined by a representation of the assumption of sub-independence, formulated previously in terms of the characteristic function and convolution, as a weaker assumption than independence for derivation of the distribution of the sum of random variables. The new representation is in terms of stochastic equivalence and the class of distributions is referred to as the summable uncorrelated marginals (SUM) distributions. The SUM distributions can be used as models for the joint distribution of uncorrelated random variables, irrespective of the strength of dependence between them. We provide a method for the construction of bivariate SUM distributions through linking any pair of identical symmetric probability density functions. We also give a formula for measuring the strength of dependence of the SUM models. A final result shows that under the condition of positive or negative orthant dependence, the SUM property implies independence.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new copula-based dependence order to compare the relative degree of dependence between two pairs of random variables. Relationship of the new order to the existing dependence orders is investigated. In particular, the new ordering is stronger than the partial ordering, more monotone regression dependence as developed by Avérous et al. [J. Avérous, C. Genest, S.C. Kochar, On dependence structure of order statistics, Journal of Multivariate Analysis 94 (2005) 159-171]. Applications of this partial order to order statistics, k-record values and frailty models are given.  相似文献

In this paper, the noncentral matrix quadratic forms of the skew elliptical variables are studied. A family of the matrix variate noncentral generalized Dirichlet distributions is introduced as the extension of the noncentral Wishart distributions, the Dirichlet distributions and the noncentral generalized Dirichlet distributions. Main distributional properties are investigated. These include probability density and closure property under linear transformation and marginalization, the joint distribution of the sub-matrices of the matrix quadratic forms in the skew elliptical variables and the moment generating functions and Bartlett's decomposition of the matrix quadratic forms in the skew normal variables. Two versions of the noncentral Cochran's Theorem for the matrix variate skew normal distributions are obtained, providing sufficient and necessary conditions for the quadratic forms in the skew normal variables to have the matrix variate noncentral generalized Dirichlet distributions. Applications include the properties of the least squares estimation in multivariate linear model and the robustness property of the Wilk's likelihood ratio statistic in the family of the matrix variate skew elliptical distributions.  相似文献
