We propose different nonparametric tests for multivariate data and derive their asymptotic distribution for unbalanced designs in which the number of factor levels tends to infinity (large a, small ni case). Quasi gratis, some new parametric multivariate tests suitable for the large a asymptotic case are also obtained. Finite sample performances are investigated and compared in a simulation study. The nonparametric tests are based on separate rankings for the different variables. In the presence of outliers, the proposed nonparametric methods have better power than their parametric counterparts. Application of the new tests is demonstrated using data from plant pathology.  相似文献

Let {Xn,n≥1} be a sequence of stationary non-negative associated random variables with common marginal density f(x). Here we use the empirical survival function as studied in Bagai and Prakasa Rao (1991) and apply the smoothing technique proposed by Gawronski (1980) (see also Chaubey and Sen, 1996) in proposing a smooth estimator of the density function f and that of the corresponding survival function. Some asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators, similar to those obtained in Chaubey and Sen (1996) for the i.i.d. case, are derived. A simulation study has been carried out to compare the new estimator to the kernel estimator of a density function given in Bagai and Prakasa Rao (1996) and the estimator in Buch-Larsen et al. (2005).  相似文献

On the basis of a random sample of size n on an m-dimensional random vector X, this note proposes a class of estimators fn(p) of f(p), where f is a density of X w.r.t. a σ-finite measure dominated by the Lebesgue measure on Rm, p = (p1,…,pm), pj ≥ 0, fixed integers, and for x = (x1,…,xm) in Rm, f(p)(x) = ?p1+…+pm f(x)/(?p1x1 … ?pmxm). Asymptotic unbiasedness as well as both almost sure and mean square consistencies of fn(p) are examined. Further, a necessary and sufficient condition for uniform asymptotic unbisedness or for uniform mean square consistency of fn(p) is given. Finally, applications of estimators of this note to certain statistical problems are pointed out.  相似文献

A density f=f(x1,…,xd) on [0,∞)d is block decreasing if for each j∈{1,…,d}, it is a decreasing function of xj, when all other components are held fixed. Let us consider the class of all block decreasing densities on [0,1]d bounded by B. We shall study the minimax risk over this class using n i.i.d. observations, the loss being measured by the L1 distance between the estimate and the true density. We prove that if S=log(1+B), lower bounds for the risk are of the form C(Sd/n)1/(d+2), where C is a function of d only. We also prove that a suitable histogram with unequal bin widths as well as a variable kernel estimate achieve the optimal multivariate rate. We present a procedure for choosing all parameters in the kernel estimate automatically without loosing the minimax optimality, even if B and the support of f are unknown.  相似文献

The so-called independent component (IC) model states that the observed p-vector X is generated via X=ΛZ+μ, where μ is a p-vector, Λ is a full-rank matrix, and the centered random vector Z has independent marginals. We consider the problem of testing the null hypothesis H0:μ=0 on the basis of i.i.d. observations X1,…,Xn generated by the symmetric version of the IC model above (for which all ICs have a symmetric distribution about the origin). In the spirit of [M. Hallin, D. Paindaveine, Optimal tests for multivariate location based on interdirections and pseudo-Mahalanobis ranks, Annals of Statistics, 30 (2002), 1103-1133], we develop nonparametric (signed-rank) tests, which are valid without any moment assumption and are, for adequately chosen scores, locally and asymptotically optimal (in the Le Cam sense) at given densities. Our tests are measurable with respect to the marginal signed ranks computed in the collection of null residuals , where is a suitable estimate of Λ. Provided that is affine-equivariant, the proposed tests, unlike the standard marginal signed-rank tests developed in [M.L. Puri, P.K. Sen, Nonparametric Methods in Multivariate Analysis, Wiley & Sons, New York, 1971] or any of their obvious generalizations, are affine-invariant. Local powers and asymptotic relative efficiencies (AREs) with respect to Hotelling’s T2 test are derived. Quite remarkably, when Gaussian scores are used, these AREs are always greater than or equal to one, with equality in the multinormal model only. Finite-sample efficiencies and robustness properties are investigated through a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

Let f be an unknown multivariate density belonging to a prespecified parametric class of densities, , where k is unknown, but for all k and each has finite Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension. Given an i.i.d. sample of size n drawn from f, we show that it is possible to select automatically, and without extra restrictions on f, an estimate with the property that . Our method is inspired by the combinatorial tools developed in Devroye and Lugosi (Combinatorial Methods in Density Estimation, Springer, New York, 2001) and it includes a wide range of density models, such as mixture models or exponential families.  相似文献

Let f be a multivariate density and fn be a kernel estimate of f drawn from the n-sample X1,…,Xn of i.i.d. random variables with density f. We compute the asymptotic rate of convergence towards 0 of the volume of the symmetric difference between the t-level set {f?t} and its plug-in estimator {fn?t}. As a corollary, we obtain the exact rate of convergence of a plug-in-type estimate of the density level set corresponding to a fixed probability for the law induced by f.  相似文献

Let (X, Y) have regression function m(x) = E(Y | X = x), and let X have a marginal density f1(x). We consider two nonparameteric estimates of m(x): the Watson estimate when f1 is known and the Yang estimate when f1 is known or unknown. For both estimates the asymptotic distribution of the maximal deviation from m(x) is proved, thus extending results of Bickel and Rosenblatt for the estimation of density functions.  相似文献

A nonparametric test of the mutual independence between many numerical random vectors is proposed. This test is based on a characterization of mutual independence defined from probabilities of half-spaces in a combinatorial formula of Möbius. As such, it is a natural generalization of tests of independence between univariate random variables using the empirical distribution function. If the number of vectors is p and there are n observations, the test is defined from a collection of processes Rn,A, where A is a subset of {1,…,p} of cardinality |A|>1, which are asymptotically independent and Gaussian. Without the assumption that each vector is one-dimensional with a continuous cumulative distribution function, any test of independence cannot be distribution free. The critical values of the proposed test are thus computed with the bootstrap which is shown to be consistent. Another similar test, with the same asymptotic properties, for the serial independence of a multivariate stationary sequence is also proposed. The proposed test works when some or all of the marginal distributions are singular with respect to Lebesgue measure. Moreover, in singular cases described in Section 4, the test inherits useful invariance properties from the general affine invariance property.  相似文献

We study a test statistic based on the integrated squared difference between a kernel estimator of the copula density and a kernel smoothed estimator of the parametric copula density. We show for fixed smoothing parameters that the test is consistent and that the asymptotic properties are driven by a U-statistic of order 4 with degeneracy of order 1. For practical implementation we suggest to compute the critical values through a semiparametric bootstrap. Monte Carlo results show that the bootstrap procedure performs well in small samples. In particular, size and power are less sensitive to smoothing parameter choice than they are under the asymptotic approximation obtained for a vanishing bandwidth.  相似文献

We propose a new test for independence of error and covariate in a nonparametric regression model. The test statistic is based on a kernel estimator for the L2-distance between the conditional distribution and the unconditional distribution of the covariates. In contrast to tests so far available in literature, the test can be applied in the important case of multivariate covariates. It can also be adjusted for models with heteroscedastic variance. Asymptotic normality of the test statistic is shown. Simulation results and a real data example are presented.  相似文献

We study the following model of hidden Markov chain: with (Xi) a real-valued positive recurrent and stationary Markov chain, and (?i)1?i?n+1 a noise independent of the sequence (Xi) having a known distribution. We present an adaptive estimator of the transition density based on the quotient of a deconvolution estimator of the density of Xi and an estimator of the density of (Xi,Xi+1). These estimators are obtained by contrast minimization and model selection. We evaluate the L2 risk and its rate of convergence for ordinary smooth and supersmooth noise with regard to ordinary smooth and supersmooth chains. Some examples are also detailed.  相似文献

We investigate the estimation problem of parameters in a two-sample semiparametric model. Specifically, let X1,…,Xn be a sample from a population with distribution function G and density function g. Independent of the Xi’s, let Z1,…,Zm be another random sample with distribution function H and density function h(x)=exp[α+r(x)β]g(x), where α and β are unknown parameters of interest and g is an unknown density. This model has wide applications in logistic discriminant analysis, case-control studies, and analysis of receiver operating characteristic curves. Furthermore, it can be considered as a biased sampling model with weight function depending on unknown parameters. In this paper, we construct minimum Hellinger distance estimators of α and β. The proposed estimators are chosen to minimize the Hellinger distance between a semiparametric model and a nonparametric density estimator. Theoretical properties such as the existence, strong consistency and asymptotic normality are investigated. Robustness of proposed estimators is also examined using a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

Summary In this paper the nonparametric several sample scale problem is considered and some tests are proposed for the hypothesis of homogeneity versus ordered alternatives. These tests are based on statistics that are weighted linear combinations of Sugiura (1965,Osaka J. Math.,2, 385–426) type statistics proposed for testing homogeneity of scale against the omnibus alternative. For each class of test statistics suggested, the member with maximum Pitman efficiency is identified. The optimal statistics are compared with their parametric and nonparametric competitors.  相似文献

Based on a random sample from a population with (unknown) probability density f, this note exhibits a class of statistics f(p) for each fixed integer p ≧ 0. It is shown that f(p) are uniformly strongly consistent estimators of f(p), the pth order derivative of f, if and only iff(p)is bounded and uniformly continuous.  相似文献

Semiparametric models with both nonparametric and parametric components have become increasingly useful in many scientific fields, due to their appropriate representation of the trade-off between flexibility and efficiency of statistical models. In this paper we focus on semi-varying coefficient models (a.k.a. varying coefficient partially linear models) in a “large n, diverging p” situation, when both the number of parametric and nonparametric components diverges at appropriate rates, and we only consider the case p=o(n). Consistency of the estimator based on B-splines and asymptotic normality of the linear components are established under suitable assumptions. Interestingly (although not surprisingly) our analysis shows that the number of parametric components can diverge at a faster rate than the number of nonparametric components and the divergence rates of the number of the nonparametric components constrain the allowable divergence rates of the parametric components, which is a new phenomenon not established in the existing literature as far as we know. Finally, the finite sample behavior of the estimator is evaluated by some Monte Carlo studies.  相似文献

Consider the model Y=m(X)+ε, where m(⋅)=med(Y|⋅) is unknown but smooth. It is often assumed that ε and X are independent. However, in practice this assumption is violated in many cases. In this paper we propose modeling the dependence between ε and X by means of a copula model, i.e. (ε,X)∼Cθ(Fε(⋅),FX(⋅)), where Cθ is a copula function depending on an unknown parameter θ, and Fε and FX are the marginals of ε and X. Since many parametric copula families contain the independent copula as a special case, the so-obtained regression model is more flexible than the ‘classical’ regression model. We estimate the parameter θ via a pseudo-likelihood method and prove the asymptotic normality of the estimator, based on delicate empirical process theory. We also study the estimation of the conditional distribution of Y given X. The procedure is illustrated by means of a simulation study, and the method is applied to data on food expenditures in households.  相似文献

In this work, we provide a new methodology for comparing regression functions m1 and m2 from two samples. Since apart from smoothness no other (parametric) assumptions are required, our approach is based on a comparison of nonparametric estimators and of m1 and m2, respectively. The test statistics incorporate weighted differences of and computed at selected points. Since the design variables may come from different distributions, a crucial question is where to compare the two estimators. As our main results we obtain the limit distribution of (properly standardized) under the null hypothesis H0:m1=m2 and under local and global alternatives. We are also able to choose the weight function so as to maximize the power. Furthermore, the tests are asymptotically distribution free under H0 and both shift and scale invariant. Several such ’s may then be combined to get Maximin tests when the dimension of the local alternative is finite. In a simulation study we found out that our tests achieve the nominal level and already have excellent power for small to moderate sample sizes.  相似文献

Nonparametric quantile regression with multivariate covariates is a difficult estimation problem due to the “curse of dimensionality”. To reduce the dimensionality while still retaining the flexibility of a nonparametric model, we propose modeling the conditional quantile by a single-index function , where a univariate link function g0(⋅) is applied to a linear combination of covariates , often called the single-index. We introduce a practical algorithm where the unknown link function g0(⋅) is estimated by local linear quantile regression and the parametric index is estimated through linear quantile regression. Large sample properties of estimators are studied, which facilitate further inference. Both the modeling and estimation approaches are demonstrated by simulation studies and real data applications.  相似文献
