A complete and user-friendly directory of tails of Archimedean copulas is presented which can be used in the selection and construction of appropriate models with desired properties. The results are synthesized in the form of a decision tree: Given the values of some readily computable characteristics of the Archimedean generator, the upper and lower tails of the copula are classified into one of three classes each, one corresponding to asymptotic dependence and the other two to asymptotic independence. For a long list of single-parameter families, the relevant tail quantities are computed so that the corresponding classes in the decision tree can easily be determined. In addition, new models with tailor-made upper and lower tails can be constructed via a number of transformation methods. The frequently occurring category of asymptotic independence turns out to conceal a surprisingly rich variety of tail dependence structures.  相似文献

Ledford and Tawn (1997) introduced a flexible bivariate tail model based on the coefficient of tail dependence and on the dependence of the extreme values of the random variables. In this paper, we extend the concept by specifying the slowly varying part of the model as done by Hall (1982) with the univariate case. Based on Beirlant et al. (2009), we propose a bias-reduced estimator for the coefficient of tail dependence and for the estimation of small tail probabilities. We discuss the properties of these estimators via simulations and a real-life example. Furthermore, we discuss some theoretical asymptotic aspects of this approach.  相似文献

A new nonparametric estimator of the local Hurst function of a multifractional Gaussian process based on the increment ratio (IR) statistic is defined. In a general frame, the point-wise and uniform weak and strong consistency and a multidimensional central limit theorem for this estimator are established. Similar results are obtained for a refinement of the generalized quadratic variations (QV) estimator. The example of the multifractional Brownian motion is studied in detail. A simulation study is included showing that the IR-estimator is more accurate than the QV-estimator.  相似文献

In this work, we introduce the s,k-extremal coefficients for studying the tail dependence between the s-th lower and k-th upper order statistics of a normalized random vector. If its margins have tail dependence then so do their order statistics, with the strength of bivariate tail dependence decreasing as two order statistics become farther apart. Some general properties are derived for these dependence measures which can be expressed via copulas of random vectors. Its relations with other extremal dependence measures used in the literature are discussed, such as multivariate tail dependence coefficients, the coefficient η of tail dependence, coefficients based on tail dependence functions, the extremal coefficient ?, the multivariate extremal index and an extremal coefficient for min-stable distributions. Several examples are presented to illustrate the results, including multivariate exponential and multivariate Gumbel distributions widely used in applications.  相似文献

We present a new method for estimating the frontier of a multidimensional sample. The estimator is based on a kernel regression on the power-transformed data. We assume that the exponent of the transformation goes to infinity while the bandwidth of the kernel goes to zero. We give conditions on these two parameters to obtain complete convergence and asymptotic normality. The good performance of the estimator is illustrated on some finite sample situations.  相似文献

Orthant tail dependence of multivariate extreme value distributions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The orthant tail dependence describes the relative deviation of upper- (or lower-) orthant tail probabilities of a random vector from similar orthant tail probabilities of a subset of its components, and can be used in the study of dependence among extreme values. Using the conditional approach, this paper examines the extremal dependence properties of multivariate extreme value distributions and their scale mixtures, and derives the explicit expressions of orthant tail dependence parameters for these distributions. Properties of the tail dependence parameters, including their relations with other extremal dependence measures used in the literature, are discussed. Various examples involving multivariate exponential, multivariate logistic distributions and copulas of Archimedean type are presented to illustrate the results.  相似文献

Spearman’s rank-correlation coefficient (also called Spearman’s rho) represents one of the best-known measures to quantify the degree of dependence between two random variables. As a copula-based dependence measure, it is invariant with respect to the distribution’s univariate marginal distribution functions. In this paper, we consider statistical tests for the hypothesis that all pairwise Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients in a multivariate random vector are equal. The tests are nonparametric and their asymptotic distributions are derived based on the asymptotic behavior of the empirical copula process. Only weak assumptions on the distribution function, such as continuity of the marginal distributions and continuous partial differentiability of the copula, are required for obtaining the results. A nonparametric bootstrap method is suggested for either estimating unknown parameters of the test statistics or for determining the associated critical values. We present a simulation study in order to investigate the power of the proposed tests. The results are compared to a classical parametric test for equal pairwise Pearson’s correlation coefficients in a multivariate random vector. The general setting also allows the derivation of a test for stochastic independence based on Spearman’s rho.  相似文献

Double-sampling designs are commonly used in real applications when it is infeasible to collect exact measurements on all variables of interest. Two samples, a primary sample on proxy measures and a validation subsample on exact measures, are available in these designs. We assume that the validation sample is drawn from the primary sample by the Bernoulli sampling with equal selection probability. An empirical likelihood based approach is proposed to estimate the parameters of interest. By allowing the number of constraints to grow as the sample size goes to infinity, the resulting maximum empirical likelihood estimator is asymptotically normal and its limiting variance-covariance matrix reaches the semiparametric efficiency bound. Moreover, the Wilks-type result of convergence to chi-squared distribution for the empirical likelihood ratio based test is established. Some simulation studies are carried out to assess the finite sample performances of the new approach.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new copula-based dependence order to compare the relative degree of dependence between two pairs of random variables. Relationship of the new order to the existing dependence orders is investigated. In particular, the new ordering is stronger than the partial ordering, more monotone regression dependence as developed by Avérous et al. [J. Avérous, C. Genest, S.C. Kochar, On dependence structure of order statistics, Journal of Multivariate Analysis 94 (2005) 159-171]. Applications of this partial order to order statistics, k-record values and frailty models are given.  相似文献

Classical discriminant analysis focusses on Gaussian and nonparametric models where in the second case the unknown densities are replaced by kernel densities based on the training sample. In the present article we assume that it suffices to base the classification on exceedances above higher thresholds, which can be interpreted as observations in a conditional framework. Therefore, the statistical modeling of truncated distributions is merely required. In this context, a nonparametric modeling is not adequate because the kernel method is inaccurate in the upper tail region. Yet one may deal with truncated parametric distributions like the Gaussian ones. Our primary aim is to replace truncated Gaussian distributions by appropriate generalized Pareto distributions and to explore properties and the relationship of discriminant functions in both models.  相似文献

For continuous random variables, many dependence concepts and measures of association can be expressed in terms of the corresponding copula only and are thus independent of the marginal distributions. This interrelationship generally fails as soon as there are discontinuities in the marginal distribution functions. In this paper, we consider an alternative transformation of an arbitrary random variable to a uniformly distributed one. Using this technique, the class of all possible copulas in the general case is investigated. In particular, we show that one of its members—the standard extension copula introduced by Schweizer and Sklar—captures the dependence structures in an analogous way the unique copula does in the continuous case. Furthermore, we consider measures of concordance between arbitrary random variables and obtain generalizations of Kendall's tau and Spearman's rho that correspond to the sample version of these quantities for empirical distributions.  相似文献

De Haan and Pereira (2006) [6] provided models for spatial extremes in the case of stationarity, which depend on just one parameter β>0 measuring tail dependence, and they proposed different estimators for this parameter. We supplement this framework by establishing local asymptotic normality (LAN) of a corresponding point process of exceedances above a high multivariate threshold. Standard arguments from LAN theory then provide the asymptotic minimum variance within the class of regular estimators of β. It turns out that the relative frequency of exceedances is a regular estimator sequence with asymptotic minimum variance, if the underlying observations follow a multivariate extreme value distribution or a multivariate generalized Pareto distribution.  相似文献

We present a nonparametric family of estimators for the tail index of a Pareto-type distribution when covariate information is available. Our estimators are based on a weighted sum of the log-spacings between some selected observations. This selection is achieved through a moving window approach on the covariate domain and a random threshold on the variable of interest. Asymptotic normality is proved under mild regularity conditions and illustrated for some weight functions. Finite sample performances are presented on a real data study.  相似文献

An approach to modelling total tail dependence beyond the main diagonals is proposed. The concept introduced combines the principal and minor diagonals to describe total extreme dependence. A framework is introduced for the measurement of total tail dependence under model mixture. Illustrations are presented using empirical data on stock market indices and exchange rates. An extension is provided to the multivariate case and total tail dependence is considered for model mixtures.  相似文献

This paper proves weak convergence in DD of the tail empirical process–the renormalized extreme tail of the empirical process–for a large class of stationary sequences. The conditions needed for convergence are (i) moment restrictions on the amount of clustering of extremes, (ii) restrictions on long range dependence (absolute regularity or strong mixing), and (iii) convergence of the covariance function. We further show how the limit process is changed if exceedances of a nonrandom level are replaced by exceedances of a high quantile of the observations. Weak convergence of the tail empirical process is one key to asymptotics for extreme value statistics and its wide range of applications, from geoscience to finance.  相似文献

Inference on an extreme-value copula usually proceeds via its Pickands dependence function, which is a convex function on the unit simplex satisfying certain inequality constraints. In the setting of an i.i.d. random sample from a multivariate distribution with known margins and an unknown extreme-value copula, an extension of the Capéraà-Fougères-Genest estimator was introduced by D. Zhang, M. T. Wells and L. Peng [Nonparametric estimation of the dependence function for a multivariate extreme-value distribution, Journal of Multivariate Analysis 99 (4) (2008) 577-588]. The joint asymptotic distribution of the estimator as a random function on the simplex was not provided. Moreover, implementation of the estimator requires the choice of a number of weight functions on the simplex, the issue of their optimal selection being left unresolved.A new, simplified representation of the CFG-estimator combined with standard empirical process theory provides the means to uncover its asymptotic distribution in the space of continuous, real-valued functions on the simplex. Moreover, the ordinary least-squares estimator of the intercept in a certain linear regression model provides an adaptive version of the CFG-estimator whose asymptotic behavior is the same as if the variance-minimizing weight functions were used. As illustrated in a simulation study, the gain in efficiency can be quite sizable.  相似文献

Situations occur frequently in which the mean residual life (mrl) functions of two populations must be ordered. For example, if a mechanical device is improved, the mrl function for the improved device should not be less than that of the original device. Also, mrl functions for medical patients should often be ordered depending on the status of concomitant variables. This paper proposes nonparametric estimators of the bivariate mrl function under a mrl ordering. The estimators are shown to be asymptotically unbiased, strongly uniformly consistent and weakly convergent to a bivariate Gaussian process. The estimators are shown to be the projections, in a sense to be made precise, of the empirical mrl function onto an appropriate convex set of mrl functions. In the one-sample problem, the new estimators dominate the empirical mrl function in terms of risk with respect to a wide class of loss functions.  相似文献

Trimming is a standard method to decrease the effect of large sample elements in statistical procedures, used, e.g., for constructing robust estimators and tests. Trimming also provides a profound insight into the partial sum behavior of i.i.d. sequences. There is a wide and nearly complete asymptotic theory of trimming, with one remarkable gap: no satisfactory criteria for the central limit theorem for modulus trimmed sums have been found, except for symmetric random variables. In this paper we investigate this problem in the case when the variables are in the domain of attraction of a stable law. Our results show that for modulus trimmed sums the validity of the central limit theorem depends sensitively on the behavior of the tail ratio P(X>t)/P(|X|>t) of the underlying variable X as t and paradoxically, increasing the number of trimmed elements does not generally improve partial sum behavior.  相似文献

The tail dependence indexes of a multivariate distribution describe the amount of dependence in the upper right tail or lower left tail of the distribution and can be used to analyse the dependence among extremal random events. This paper examines the tail dependence of multivariate t-distributions whose copulas are not explicitly accessible. The tractable formulas of tail dependence indexes of a multivariate t-distribution are derived in terms of the joint moments of its underlying multivariate normal distribution, and the monotonicity properties of these indexes with respect to the distribution parameters are established. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the results.  相似文献

For estimating a rare event via the multivariate extreme value theory, the so-called tail dependence function has to be investigated (see [L. de Haan, J. de Ronde, Sea and wind: Multivariate extremes at work, Extremes 1 (1998) 7-45]). A simple, but effective estimator for the tail dependence function is the tail empirical distribution function, see [X. Huang, Statistics of Bivariate Extreme Values, Ph.D. Thesis, Tinbergen Institute Research Series, 1992] or [R. Schmidt, U. Stadtmüller, Nonparametric estimation of tail dependence, Scand. J. Stat. 33 (2006) 307-335]. In this paper, we first derive a bootstrap approximation for a tail dependence function with an approximation rate via the construction approach developed by [K. Chen, S.H. Lo, On a mapping approach to investigating the bootstrap accuracy, Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 107 (1997) 197-217], and then apply it to construct a confidence band for the tail dependence function. A simulation study is conducted to assess the accuracy of the bootstrap approach.  相似文献
