The Bilinear Programming Problem is a structured quadratic programming problem whose objective function is, in general, neither convex nor concave. Making use of the formal linearity of a dual formulation of the problem, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for optimality, and an algorithm to find an optimal solution.Research partially supported by the Office of Naval Research under Contract N00014-69-A-0200-1010 with the University of California.  相似文献

Complementarity and nondegeneracy in semidefinite programming   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Primal and dual nondegeneracy conditions are defined for semidefinite programming. Given the existence of primal and dual solutions, it is shown that primal nondegeneracy implies a unique dual solution and that dual nondegeneracy implies a unique primal solution. The converses hold if strict complementarity is assumed. Primal and dual nondegeneracy assumptions do not imply strict complementarity, as they do in LP. The primal and dual nondegeneracy assumptions imply a range of possible ranks for primal and dual solutionsX andZ. This is in contrast with LP where nondegeneracy assumptions exactly determine the number of variables which are zero. It is shown that primal and dual nondegeneracy and strict complementarity all hold generically. Numerical experiments suggest probability distributions for the ranks ofX andZ which are consistent with the nondegeneracy conditions. In [6], a polynomial algorithm based on successive piecewise linear approximation was described. The algorithm is polynomial for constrained nonlinear (convex or concave) optimization, when the constraint matrix has a polynomial size subdeterminant. We propose here a practical adaptation of that algorithm with the idea of successive piecewise linear approximation of the objective on refined grids, and the testing of the gap between lower and upper bounds. The implementation uses the primal affine interior point method at each approximation step. We develop special features to speed up each step and to evaluate the gap. Empirical study of problems of size up to 198 variables and 99 constraints indicates that the procedure is very efficient and all problems tested were terminated after 171 interior point iterations. The procedure used in the implementation is proved to converge when the objective is strongly convex.Supported in part by the Office of Naval Research under Grant No. N00014-88-K-0377 and Grant No. ONR N00014-91-J-1241.  相似文献

In this paper we show that a variant of the long-step affine scaling algorithm (with variable stepsizes) is two-step superlinearly convergent when applied to general linear programming (LP) problems. Superlinear convergence of the sequence of dual estimates is also established. For homogeneous LP problems having the origin as the unique optimal solution, we also show that 2/3 is a sharp upper bound on the (fixed) stepsize that provably guarantees that the sequence of primal iterates converge to the optimal solution along a unique direction of approach. Since the point to which the sequence of dual estimates converge depend on the direction of approach of the sequence of primal iterates, this result gives a plausible (but not accurate) theoretical explanation for why 2/3 is a sharp upper bound on the (fixed) stepsize that guarantees the convergence of the dual estimates. We describe a cutting plane algorithm for solving combinatorial optimization problems. The primal projective standard-form variant of Karmarkar's algorithm for linear programming is applied to the duals of a sequence of linear programming relaxations of the combinatorial optimization problem.Computational facilities provided by the Cornell Computational Optimization Project supported by NSF Grant DMS-8706133 and by the Cornell National Supercomputer Facility. This paper presents a theoretical result on convergence of a primal affine-scaling method for convex quadratic programs. It is shown that, as long as the stepsize is less than a threshold value which depends on the input data only, Ye and Tse's interior ellipsoid algorithm for convex quadratic programming is globally convergent without nondegeneracy assumptions. In addition, its local convergence rate is at least linear and the dual iterates have an ergodically convergent property.Research supported in part by the NSF under grant DDM-8721709.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an original method to solve convex bilevel programming problems in an optimistic approach. Both upper and lower level objective functions are convex and the feasible region is a polyhedron. The enumeration sequential linear programming algorithm uses primal and dual monotonicity properties of the primal and dual lower level objective functions and constraints within an enumeration frame work. New optimality conditions are given, expressed in terms of tightness of the constraints of lower level problem. These optimality conditions are used at each step of our algorithm to compute an improving rational solution within some indexes of lower level primal-dual variables and monotonicity networks as well. Some preliminary computational results are reported.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that Wolfe's algorithm for finding the point of smallest Euclidean norm in a given convex polytope generates the same sequence of feasible points as does the van de Panne-Whinstonsymmetric algorithm applied to the associated quadratic programming problem. Furthermore, it is shown how the latter algorithm may be simplified for application to problems of this type. This work was supported by the National Science Foundation, Grant No. MCS-71-03341-AO4, and by the Office of Naval Research, Contract No. N00014-75-C-0267.  相似文献

As in many primal—dual interior-point algorithms, a primal—dual infeasible-interior-point algorithm chooses a new point along the Newton direction towards a point on the central trajectory, but it does not confine the iterates within the feasible region. This paper proposes a step length rule with which the algorithm takes large distinct step lengths in the primal and dual spaces and enjoys the global convergence.Part of this research was done when M. This paper addresses the minimization of the product ofp convex functions on a convex set. It is shown that this nonconvex problem can be converted to a concave minimization problem withp variables, whose objective function value is determined by solving a convex minimization problem. An outer approximation method is proposed for obtaining a global minimum of the resulting problem. Computational experiments indicate that this algorithm is reasonable efficient whenp is less than 4.This research was partly supported by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Grant No. (C)03832018 and (C)04832010.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider an optimization problem with geometric and cone constraints, whose objective function is a composition of \(n+1\) functions. For this problem, we calculate its conjugate dual problem, where the functions involved in the objective function of the primal problem will be decomposed. Furthermore, we formulate generalized interior point regularity conditions for strong duality and give necessary and sufficient optimality conditions. As applications of this approach, we determine the formulas of the conjugate as well as the biconjugate of the objective function of the primal problem and discuss an optimization problem having as objective function the sum of reciprocals of concave functions.  相似文献

Consider the utilization of a Lagrangian dual method which is convergent for consistent convex optimization problems. When it is used to solve an infeasible optimization problem, its inconsistency will then manifest itself through the divergence of the sequence of dual iterates. Will then the sequence of primal subproblem solutions still yield relevant information regarding the primal program? We answer this question in the affirmative for a convex program and an associated subgradient algorithm for its Lagrange dual. We show that the primal–dual pair of programs corresponding to an associated homogeneous dual function is in turn associated with a saddle-point problem, in which—in the inconsistent case—the primal part amounts to finding a solution in the primal space such that the Euclidean norm of the infeasibility in the relaxed constraints is minimized; the dual part amounts to identifying a feasible steepest ascent direction for the Lagrangian dual function. We present convergence results for a conditional \(\varepsilon \)-subgradient optimization algorithm applied to the Lagrangian dual problem, and the construction of an ergodic sequence of primal subproblem solutions; this composite algorithm yields convergence of the primal–dual sequence to the set of saddle-points of the associated homogeneous Lagrangian function; for linear programs, convergence to the subset in which the primal objective is at minimum is also achieved.  相似文献

This paper proposes two sets of rules, Rule G and Rule P, for controlling step lengths in a generic primal—dual interior point method for solving the linear programming problem in standard form and its dual. Theoretically, Rule G ensures the global convergence, while Rule P, which is a special case of Rule G, ensures the O(nL) iteration polynomial-time computational complexity. Both rules depend only on the lengths of the steps from the current iterates in the primal and dual spaces to the respective boundaries of the primal and dual feasible regions. They rely neither on neighborhoods of the central trajectory nor on potential function. These rules allow large steps without performing any line search. Rule G is especially flexible enough for implementation in practically efficient primal—dual interior point algorithms.Part of the research was done when M. Kojima and S. In this paper we develop a primal-dual subgradient algorithm for preferably decomposable, generally nondifferentiable, convex programming problems, under usual regularity conditions. The algorithm employs a Lagrangian dual function along with a suitable penalty function which satisfies a specified set of properties, in order to generate a sequence of primal and dual iterates for which some subsequence converges to a pair of primal-dual optimal solutions. Several classical types of penalty functions are shown to satisfy these specified properties. A geometric convergence rate is established for the algorithm under some additional assumptions. This approach has three principal advantages. Firstly, both primal and dual solutions are available which prove to be useful in several contexts. Secondly, the choice of step sizes, which plays an important role in subgradient optimization, is guided more determinably in this method via primal and dual information. Thirdly, typical subgradient algorithms suffer from the lack of an appropriate stopping criterion, and so the quality of the solution obtained after a finite number of steps is usually unknown. In contrast, by using the primal-dual gap, the proposed algorithm possesses a natural stopping criterion.  相似文献

We propose a primal network simplex algorithm for solving the maximum flow problem which chooses as the arc to enter the basis one that isclosest to the source node from amongst all possible candidates. We prove that this algorithm requires at mostnm pivots to solve a problem withn nodes andm arcs, and give implementations of it which run in O(n 2 m) time. Our algorithm is, as far as we know, the first strongly polynomial primal simplex algorithm for solving the maximum flow problem. This research was supported in part by NSF Grants DMS 85-12277 and CDR 84-21402 and ONR Contract N00014-87-K0214.  相似文献

We study notions of nondegeneracy and several levels of increasing degeneracy from the perspective of the local behavior of a local solution of a nonlinear program when problem parameters are slightly perturbed. Ideal nondegeneracy at a local minimizer is taken to mean satisfaction of second order sufficient conditions, linear independence and strict complimentary slackness. Following a brief exploration of the relationship of these conditions with the classical definition of nondegeneracy in linear programming, we recall a number of optimality and regularity conditions used to attempt to resolve degeneracy and survey results of Fiacco, McCormick, Robinson, Kojima, Gauvin and Janin, Shapiro, Kyparisis and Liu. This overview may be viewed as a structured survey of sensitivity and stability results: the focus is on progressive levels of degeneracy. We note connections of nondegeneracy with the convergence of algorithms and observe the striking parallel between the effects of nondegeneracy and degeneracy on optimality conditions, stability analysis and algorithmic convergence behavior. Although our orientation here is primarily interpretive and noncritical, we conclude that more effort is needed to unify optimality, stability and convergence theory and more results are needed in all three areas for radically degenerate problems.Research supported by National Science Foundation Grant ECS 90-00560 and Grant N00014-89-J-1537 Office of Naval Research  相似文献

This paper discusses an algorithm for generalized convex multiplicative programming problems, a special class of nonconvex minimization problems in which the objective function is expressed as a sum ofp products of two convex functions. It is shown that this problem can be reduced to a concave minimization problem with only 2p variables. An outer approximation algorithm is proposed for solving the resulting problem.  相似文献

The Bi-Conjugate Gradient (BCG) algorithm is the simplest and most natural generalization of the classical conjugate gradient method for solving nonsymmetric linear systems. It is well-known that the method suffers from two kinds of breakdowns. The first is due to the breakdown of the underlying Lanczos process and the second is due to the fact that some iterates are not well-defined by the Galerkin condition on the associated Krylov subspaces. In this paper, we derive a simple modification of the BCG algorithm, the Composite Step BCG (CSBCG) algorithm, which is able to compute all the well-defined BCG iterates stably, assuming that the underlying Lanczos process does not break down. The main idea is to skip over a step for which the BCG iterate is not defined. The work of this author was supported by the Office of Naval Research under contract N00014-89J-1440.The work of this author was supported by the Office of Naval Research under contracts N00014-90J-1695 and N00014-92J-1890, the Department of Energy under contract DE-FG03-87ER25307, the National Science Foundation under contracts ASC 90-03002 and 92-01266, and the Army Research Office under contract DAAL03-91-G-0150. For a kind of fractional programming problem that the objective functions are the ratio of two DC (difference of convex) functions with finitely many convex constraints, in this paper, its dual problems are constructed, weak and strong duality assertions are given, and some sufficient and necessary optimality conditions which characterize their optimal solutions are obtained. Some recently obtained Farkas-type results for fractional programming problems that the objective functions are the ratio of a convex function to a concave function with finitely many convex constraints are the special cases of the general results of this paper.  相似文献

Goldfarb and Hao (1990) have proposed a pivot rule for the primal network simplex algorithm that will solve a maximum flow problem on ann-vertex,m-arc network in at mostnm pivots and O(n 2 m) time. In this paper we describe how to extend the dynamic tree data structure of Sleator and Tarjan (1983, 1985) to reduce the running time of this algorithm to O(nm logn). This bound is less than a logarithmic factor larger than those of the fastest known algorithms for the problem. Our extension of dynamic trees is interesting in its own right and may well have additional applications.Research partially supported by a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, Grant No. CCR-8858097, an IBM Faculty Development Award, and AT&T Bell Laboratories.Research partially supported by the Office of Naval Research, Contract No. N00014-87-K-0467.Research partially supported by the National Science Foundation, Grant No. DCR-8605961, and the Office of Naval Research, Contract No. N00014-87-K-0467.  相似文献
