Starting from Maxwell's equations and considering the quadratic electro-optic effect as a perturbation, we present a generalized wave coupling theory of quadratic electro-optic effect in linear absorbent centrosymmetric medium. The efficiency of the charge density modulation of an electron bunch in the field of a linearly polarized monochromatic electromagnetic wave propagating oppositely to the bunch motion is considered. The quantum modulation of an electron beam in the field of opposite electromagnetic waves, at a frequency equal to the difference of the wave frequencies, and its harmonics, is obtained. The depth of the modulation becomes of order one at relatively small intensities of the laser fields (including a real spreading of the beam). In the case of equal frequencies of the waves (when the Kapitza-Dirac effect occurs particles form a beam. An experiment for obtaining a modulated beam of particles at the frequencies of the laser radiation, and its harmonics, as well as for bunching of particles in the field of a standing wave is suggested.  相似文献

We describe light scattering from a graphene sheet having a modulated optical conductivity. We show that such modulation enables the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons by an electromagnetic wave impinging at normal incidence. The resulting surface plasmon polaritons are responsible for a substantial increase of electromagnetic radiation absorption by the graphene sheet. The origin of the modulation can be due either to a periodic strain field or to adatoms (or absorbed molecules) with a modulated adsorption profile.  相似文献

We analyze the modulation of the Stokes parameters in Young's two-pinhole interference experiment with a random electromagnetic beam. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic (spectral) degree of coherence put forward in Opt. Lett.29, 328 (2004) [or its space-time analog in Opt. Express 11, 1137 (2003)] is physically related to the contrasts of modulation in the four Stokes parameters. More explicitly, the electromagnetic degree of coherence is a measure of both the visibility of the intensity fringes and the modulation contrasts of the three polarization Stokes parameters. We also show that by using suitable wave plates the modulation in any Stokes parameter can be transformed into the form of intensity variation, and hence the electromagnetic degree of coherence can be obtained experimentally by four visibility measurements.  相似文献

The stability of the electromagnetic plasma confinement by powerful external s-polarized pump waves is considered. The parametric excitation of standing electromagnetic waves along the plasma boundary with frequencies close to the frequency of the pump wave leads to a periodic density modulation of the plasma boundary. The density disturbances along the direction of the external wave field are connected to the excitation of transverse p-polarized surface waves while the modulation in the direction perpendicular to the pump field are created by the parametric interaction between the external wave and s-polarized trapped leaking oscillations. Only when the leaking waves are excited the scale length of the modulation is larger than half the free space wave length of the incident radiation.  相似文献

The transmitivity of a probe monochromatic electromagnetic wave through the plasma gives, according to the theoretical analysis, “bands” of stable and unstable regions of frequencies, with properties which are related to Mathieu's or Hill's type equations.  相似文献

Feasibility of a new integrated amplitude modulator/switch operating up to the visible spectrum, based on the absorption of light due to the linear interaction of the incident laser and a two-dimensional plasma layer is demonstrated. Plasma layers are generated via the Muller effect at the waveguide's interfaces. A plasma wave is excited in the two-dimensional gas when it is illuminated by electromagnetic radiation. Thus, due to the energy transfer from the electromagnetic wave to the plasma wave, the output light intensity can be controlled. The device is capable of amplitude modulation of guided beams in dielectric waveguides. Analysis based on both full-classical and semiclassical approaches are performed and are compared.  相似文献

Phase modulation methods for surface electromagnetic waves propagating at the interface between a homogeneous medium and a one-dimensional photonic crystal have been analyzed numerically and theoretically. Modulation is performed by changing the geometrical parameters of the microrelief on the surface of the photonic crystal. The phase modulation methods under consideration can be used to create optical elements for surface waves, in particular, lenses, prisms, and diffraction gratings. A Bragg grating has been calculated as an example. According to the simulation results, the average coefficient of reflection of a surface wave in the band gap is 0.95.  相似文献

The electromagnetic radiation of an electron flow in a triode with a virtual cathode is studied from the viewpoint of a parametric resonance. It is shown that the phase modulation of the electrons and the radiation saturation take place due to the oscillations of the virtual cathode as a result of large space charge. An expression for the coherent radiation intensity of the electron flow in a resonator is derived. It is shown that the phase modulation depth and the radiation efficiency increase with an external electromagnetic wave. Tomsk Polytechnic University. The wave equation for linear shallow water waves propagating over a varying bottom topography has the same form as that for p-polarized electromagnetic waves in inhomogeneous dielectric media. The role played by the dielectric permittivity in the case of electromagnetic waves is played by the inverse water depth. We apply the invariant imbedding theory of wave propagation, which has been developed mainly to study the electromagnetic wave propagation, to linear shallow water waves in the special case where the depth depends on only one coordinate. By comparing the numerical result obtained using our method, when the depth profile is linear, with an exact analytical formula, we demonstrate that our method is numerically reliable. The invariant imbedding method can be used in studying the influence of complicated bottom topography on the propagation of shallow water waves, in a numerically exact manner. We illustrate this by considering the case where a periodic modulation is added to a linear depth profile. Bragg scattering due to the periodic component competes with the tsunami effect due to the linear depth variation. This competition is seen to generate interesting physical effects. We also consider a ridge-type bottom topography and examine the resonant transmission phenomenon associated with the Fabry–Perot effect.  相似文献

高速飞行器等离子鞘套由于飞行姿态调整、湍流、非均匀烧蚀等因素的影响,使其等离子体参数存在时变特性,针对这种传输介质的快速时变特性引起的电波幅度、相位上的寄生调制效应,本文利用大面积辉光放电等离子体产生装置,搭建了等离子体中信号传输实验系统,进行了S频段的单频信号与调制信号传输实验,观测验证了调制效应的存在,且其调制频率与等离子体变化频率具有一致性,进一步分析了等离子参数与寄生调制效应的关系,理论和实验结果表明:即使当载波频率大于等离子频率时,时变等离子引起的寄生调制效应也会使传输信号的星座图发生旋转,造成其判决容差裕度变小,通信可靠性下降,并且载波频率越接近等离子频率时,其寄生调制效应越强烈。  相似文献

Propagation of monochromatic linearly polarized plane electromagnetic wave through resonantly absorbing anisotropic medium with frequency-modulated response is studied analytically and numerically. Frequency modulation is assumed to be provided by means of either mechanical vibration of a solid sample or modulation of quantum transition frequency by a driving low-frequency electromagnetic field. Possibility of generation of train of pulses with polarization of the incident field as well as with orthogonal polarization is shown. For each polarization, optimal combinations of values of four parameters that provide maximal ratio of peak pulse intensity to the average output intensity is found numerically. Possible realization of this resonant method of pulse shaping in laser crystal Dy2+:CaF2 is discussed.  相似文献

Parametric coupling of three traveling waves is studied numerically on an example of magnetoelastic waves in a highly anharmonic antiferromagnetic crystal. The physical mechanism of coupling is explained as a result of modulation of the nonlinear elastic moduli of the crystal by RF electromagnetic pumping. Parametric interaction of a coupled wave triad with homogeneous pumping field results in an instability of explosive type. Above the threshold of instability, the amplitudes of waves increase to occurrence of singularity in finite time. Explosion is accompanied by spatial localization of wave envelopes. The supercritical dynamics of a wave triad is simulated numerically taking into account the third- and fourth-order magnetoelastic anharmonicity of the medium. Violation of the explosive scenario by nonlinear phase mismatch between the coupled waves and pumping field is demonstrated. Modulation of the pumping phase in time is considered as a tool to compensate for the nonlinear mismatch and recondition the explosive amplification and spatial localization of wave triads. A proper phase modulation law is found in a numerical experiment.  相似文献

Using hydrodynamical model of semiconductor plasma analytical investigations are made for the amplitude modulation as well as demodulation of an electromagnetic wave in a transversely magnetised acousto-optic semiconducting plasma. The inclusion of carriers diffusion adds new dimension in the analysis presented here. Analysis are made under different wave number regions over a wide range of cyclotron frequency. It has been seen that diffusion of charge carriers modifies amplitude modulation and demodulation processes effectively. Numerical estimations are made for n-InSb crystal irradiated by pump wave of frequency 1.6 T s-1. Complete absorption of the waves takes place in all the possible wave lengths regimes when the cyclotron frequency becomes exactly equal to (v 2 + )1/2. The modulation of an intense electromagnetic beam induced by the acousto-optic (AO) effect has been analysed in a transversely magnetised semiconductor-plasma medium. The effect of carrier diffusion on the threshold field and gain profile of the modulated wave has been extremely investigated using coupled mode theory. The origin of the AO interaction is assumed to lie in the induced nonlinear diffusion current density of the medium. By considering the modulation process as a four wave parametric interaction an expression for effective third-order AO susceptibility describing the phenomena has been deduced. The modulation is greatly modified by propagation characteristics such as dispersion and diffraction due to dielectric relaxation of the acoustic mode. The threshold pump field and the steady state growth rates are estimated from the effective third-order polarisation in the plasma medium. Analytical estimation reveals that in the presence of enhanced diffusion due to excess charge carriers the modulated beam can be effectively amplified in a dispersionless acoustic wave regime. The presence of an external dc magnetic field is found to be favourable for the onset of diffusion induced modulational amplification of the modulated wave in heavily doped regime. In communication processes, amplitude modulation is very helpful to save power using a single band transmission. Using the hydrodynamical model of semiconductor plasma analytical investigations are made for the amplitude modulation as well as demodulation of an electromagnetic wave incorporating carrier heating (CH) effects in acousto-optic magnetised semiconductor plasma. The CH effects add new dimensions in the present analysis. Analysis are made under different wave number regions over a wide range of cyclotron frequencies. It is found that incorporation of CH effects modifies the amplitude modulation and demodulation processes effectively. Numerical estimations are made for III–V semiconductor crystal irradiated by pump wave of frequency 1.6×1013 s?1. Complete absorption of the waves takes place in all the possible wavelength regimes when the cyclotron frequency ωc becomes nearly equal to ω0, the pump frequency on neglecting the collision term in modulation/ demodulation indices.  相似文献
