For complex turbulent flows, Reynolds stress closure modeling (RSCM) is the lowest level at which models can be developed with some fidelity to the governing Navier–Stokes equations. Citing computational burden, researchers have long sought to reduce the seven-equation RSCM to the so-called algebraic Reynolds stress model which involves solving only two evolution equations for turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation. In the past, reduction has been accomplished successfully in the weak-equilibrium limit of turbulence. In non-equilibrium turbulence, attempts at reduction have lacked mathematical rigor and have been based on ad hoc hypotheses resulting in less than adequate models.?In this work we undertake a formal (numerical) examination of the dynamical system of equations that constitute the Reynolds stress closure model to investigate the following questions. (i) When does the RSCM equation system formally permit reduced representation? (ii) What is the dimensionality (number of independent variables) of the permitted reduced system? (iii) How can one derive the reduced system (algebraic Reynolds stress model) from the full RSCM equations? Our analysis reveals that a lower-dimensional representation of the RSCM equations is possible not only in the equilibrium limit, but also in the slow-manifold stage of non-equilibrium turbulence. The degree of reduction depends on the type of mean-flow deformation and state of turbulence. We further develop two novel methods for deriving algebraic Reynolds stress models from RSCM equations in non-equilibrium turbulence. The present work is expected to play an important role in bringing much of the sophistication of the RSCM into the realm of two-equation algebraic Reynolds stress models. Another objective of this work is to place the other algebraic stress modeling efforts in the lower-dimensional modeling context. Received 19 November 1999 and accepted 3 August 2000  相似文献

The unsteady turbulent flow around bodies at high Reynolds number is predicted by an anisotropic eddy-viscosity model in the context of the Organised Eddy Simulation (OES). A tensorial eddy-viscosity concept is developed to reinforce turbulent stress anisotropy, that is a crucial characteristic of non-equilibrium turbulence in the near-region. The theoretical aspects of the modelling are investigated by means of a phase-averaged PIV in the flow around a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 1.4×105. A pronounced stress–strain misalignment is quantified in the near-wake region of the detached flow, that is well captured by a tensorial eddy-viscosity concept. This is achieved by modelling the turbulence stress anisotropy tensor by its projection onto the principal matrices of the strain-rate tensor. Additional transport equations for the projection coefficients are derived from a second-order moment closure scheme. The modification of the turbulence length scale yielded by OES is used in the Detached Eddy Simulation hybrid approach. The detached turbulent flows around a NACA0012 airfoil (2-D) and a circular cylinder (3-D) are studied at Reynolds numbers 105 and 1.4×105, respectively. The results compared to experimental ones emphasise the predictive capabilities of the OES approach concerning the flow physics capture for turbulent unsteady flows around bodies at high Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

A new monotonic scheme for the approximation of steady scalar transport is formulated and implemented within a collocated finite-volume/pressure-correction algorithm for general turbulent flows in complex geometries. The scheme is essentially a monotonic implementation of the quadratic QUICK interpolation and uses a continuous and compact limiter to secure monotonicity. The principal purpose is to allow an accurate and fully bounded, hence stable, approximation of turbulence convection in the context of two-equation eddy viscosity and Reynolds stress transport modelling of two- and three-dimensional flows, both subsonic and transonic. Among other benefits, this capability permits an assessment to be made of the adequacy of approximating turbulence convection with first-order upwind schemes in conjunction with higher-order formulations for mean-flow properties—a widespread practice. The performance characteristics of the bounded scheme are illustrated by reference to computations for scalar transport, for a transonic flow in a Laval nozzle, for one separated laminar flow and for two separated turbulent flows computed with a non-linear RNG model and full Reynolds stress closure.  相似文献

A nonlinear turbulent stress relationship, based on an explicit algebraic Reynolds stress closure, is compared against experimental data obtained in a swirl-supported, light-duty engine motored at constant speed. The model relationship is applied to measured mean velocity gradients and turbulence scales, and the predictions compared against the measured shear stress and normal stress anisotropy. Significant improvement over the linear stress relationship typically used in two-equation turbulence models is observed. Conditions under which the model predictions are poor are identified and the reasons for the poor performance discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we demonstrate that the transport equation of the generalised subgrid scale (SGS) turbulent stress tensor is form-invariant but not frame-indifferent under Euclidean transformations of the frame. A new closure equation between the generalized SGS turbulent stress tensor and the resolved kinematic quantities is proposed. The closure equation at the basis of the proposed model (Two-Equation Model, TEM): a) respects the principle of the turbulence frame indifference [1]; b) takes into account both the anisotropy of the turbulence velocity scales and turbulence length scales; c) removes any balance assumption between the production and dissipation of SGS turbulent kinetic energy; d) assumes scale similarity in the definition of the second-order tensor representing the turbulent velocity scales. In the proposed model: a) the closure coefficient C which appears in the constitutive equation is uniquely determined without using Germanos dynamic procedure [2]; b) the generalized SGS turbulent stress tensor is related exclusively to the generalized SGS turbulent kinetic energy (which is calculated by means of its balance equation) and the modified Leonard tensor; c) the viscous dissipation of the generalized SGS turbulent kinetic energy is calculated by solving the balance equation. The proposed model is tested for a turbulent channel flow at Reynolds numbers (based on friction velocity and channel half-width) ranging from 180 to 2340.Received: 11 February 2004, Accepted: 20 August 2004, Published online: 22 February 2005PACS: 02.60.Cb, 47.27.Eq, 47.11. + j Correspondence to: F. Shock waves drastically alter the nature of Reynolds stresses in a turbulent flow, and conventional turbulence models cannot reproduce this effect. In the present study, we employ explicit algebraic Reynolds stress model (EARSM) to predict the Reynolds stress anisotropy generated by a shockwave. The model by Wallin and Johansson (2000) is used as the baseline model. It is found to over-predict the post-shock Reynolds stresses in canonical shock turbulence interaction. The budget of the transport equation of Reynolds stresses computed using linear interaction analysis shows that the unsteady shock distortion mechanism and the pressure–velocity correlations are important. We propose improvement to the baseline model using linear interaction analysis results and redistribute the turbulent kinetic energy between the principle Reynolds stresses. The new model matches DNS data for the amplification of Reynolds stresses across the shock and their post-shock evolution, for a range of Mach numbers. It is applied to oblique shock/boundary-layer interaction at Mach 5. Significant improvements are observed in predicting surface pressure and skin friction coefficient, with respect to experimental measurements.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of measurements and numerical predictions of turbulent cross-flow in a staggered tube bundle. The bundle consists of transverse and longitudinal pitch-to-diameter ratios of 3.8 and 2.1, respectively. The experiments were conducted using a particle image velocimetry technique, in a flow of water in a channel at a Reynolds number of 9300 based on the inlet velocity and the tube diameter. A commercial CFD code, ANSYS CFX V10.0, is used to predict the turbulent flow in the bundle. The steady and isothermal Reynolds–Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations were used to predict the turbulent flow using each of the following four turbulence models: a k-epsilon, a standard k-omega, a k-omega-based shear stress transport, and an epsilon-based second moment closure. The epsilon-based models used a scalable wall function and the omega-based models used a wall treatment that switches automatically between low-Reynolds and standard wall function formulations.

The experimental results revealed extremely high levels of turbulence production by the normal stresses, as well as regions of negative turbulence production. The convective transport by mean flow and turbulent diffusion were observed to be significantly higher than in classical turbulent boundary layers. As a result, turbulence production is generally not in equilibrium with its dissipation rate. In spite of these characteristics, it was observed that the Reynolds normal stresses approximated from the k-based two-equation models were in a closer agreement with experiments than values obtained from the second moment closure. The results show that none of the turbulence models was able to consistently reproduce the mean and turbulent quantities reasonably well. The omega-based models predicted the mean velocities better in the developing region while the epsilon-based models gave better results in the region where the flow is becoming spatially periodic.  相似文献

A theoretical method based on mathematical physics formalism that allows transposition of turbulence modeling methods from URANS (unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes) models, to multiple-scale models and large eddy simulations (LES) is presented. The method is based on the spectral Fourier transform of the dynamic equation of the two-point fluctuating velocity correlations with an extension to the case of non-homogenous turbulence. The resulting equation describes the evolution of the spectral velocity correlation tensor in wave vector space. Then, we show that the full wave number integration of the spectral equation allows one to recover usual one-point statistical closure whereas the partial integration based on spectrum splitting gives rise to partial integrated transport models (PITM). This latter approach, depending on the type of spectral partitioning used, can yield either a statistical multiple-scale model or subfilter transport models used in LES or hybrid methods, providing some appropriate approximations are made. Closure hypotheses underlying these models are then discussed by reference to physical considerations with emphasis on identification of tensorial fluxes that represent turbulent energy transfer or dissipation. Some experiments such as the homogeneous axisymmetric contraction, the decay of isotropic turbulence, the pulsed turbulent channel flow and a wall injection induced flow are then considered as typical possible applications for illustrating the potentials of these models.   相似文献

The gradient transport model for k is extended to classes of turbulent flows for which the gradient transport hypothesis is relevant but the anisotropy of the Reynolds stress, to which the eddy diffusivity is proportional, is large and variable. In highly anisotropic turbulence the standard isotropic model used in engineering practice is fundamentally wrong and the conventional anisotropic approximation inadequate. The work is motivated by the important observations that the eddy diffusivity coefficient for a standard gradient transport model for various transported quantities is a factor of 3–10 times larger in highly anisotropic turbulence than that used in standard engineering models. While the conventional anisotropic eddy diffusivity approximation appears adequate for material conserved scalars it is inadequate for k. The problem is solved by addressing the anisotropy of the turbulent transport of k at the level of the underlying third order tensor. It is shown that, unlike the traditional transport models for k, the orientation of the anisotropy with respect to the direction of the gradient plays a crucial role not accounted for in conventional models used in engineering calculations. The new anisotropic eddy diffusivity tensor is quadratic in the anisotropy (the traditional model is linear in the anisotropy). It is shown that the new more rigorous anisotropic eddy diffusivity varies 300% more than the standard model comparing the isotropic limit to the value for the two-dimensional limit. The two-dimensional limit is important in strongly stably stratified flows, in pressure gradient or shock driven flows and in rotating flows. Using the simple shear and the homogeneous non-equilibrium Rayleigh Taylor turbulence the new anisotropic diffusivity tensor is validated in inhomogeneous Rayleigh Taylor turbulence at early and late times.  相似文献

A mathematical model of turbulent density-driven flows is presented and is solved numerically. A form of the k–? turbulence model is used to characterize the turbulent transport, and both this non-linear model and a sediment transport equation are coupled with the mean-flow fluid motion equations. A partitioned, Newton–Raphson-based solution scheme is used to effect a solution. The model is applied to the study of flow through a circular secondary sedimentation basin.

Reynolds Stress Budgets in Couette and Boundary Layer Flows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Reynolds stress budgets for both Couette and boundary layer flows are evaluated and presented. Data are taken from direct numerical simulations of rotating and non-rotating plane turbulent Couette flow and turbulent boundary layer with and without adverse pressure gradient. Comparison of the total shear stress for the two types of flows suggests that the Couette case may be regarded as the high Reynolds number limit for the boundary layer flow close to the wall. The limit values of turbulence statistics close to the wall for the boundary layer for increasing Reynolds number approach the corresponding Couette flow values. The direction of rotation is chosen so that it has a stabilizing effect, whereas the adverse pressure gradient is destabilizing. The pressure-strain rate tensor in the Couette flow case is presented for a split into slow, rapid and Stokes terms. Most of the influence from rotation is located to the region close to the wall, and both the slow and rapid parts are affected. The anisotropy for the boundary layer decreases for higher Reynolds number, reflecting the larger separation of scales, and becomes close to that for Couette flow. The adverse pressure gradient has a strong weakening effect on the anisotropy. All of the data presented here are available on the web [36]. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Some developments in computational modeling of turbulent flows   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In this paper, some recent developments of two turbulence closure schemes at ICOMP, NASA Lewis will be discussed. One is the Reynolds-stress algebraic equation model and the other is the Reynolds-stress transport equation model. Various model constraints required by the rapid distortion theory, the invariant theory and the realizability principle, etc. will be described in the model development. The models discussed are for high-turbulent Reynolds number flows, so that the near-wall turbulence and the low-Reynolds-number turbulence are not discussed here.  相似文献

The partially integrated transport modelling (PITM) method can be viewed as a continuous approach for hybrid RANS/LES modelling allowing seamless coupling between the RANS and the LES regions. The subgrid turbulence quantities are thus calculated from spectral equations depending on the varying spectral cutoff location [Schiestel, R., Dejoan, A., 2005. Towards a new partially integrated transport model for coarse grid and unsteady turbulent flow simulations. Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics 18, 443–468; Chaouat, B., Schiestel, R., 2005. A new partially integrated transport model for subgrid-scale stresses and dissipation rate for turbulent developing flows. Physics of Fluids, 17 (6)] The PITM method can be applied to almost all statistical models to derive its hybrid LES counterpart. In the present work, the PITM version based on the transport equations for the turbulent Reynolds stresses together with the dissipation transport rate equation is now developed in a general formulation based on a new accurate energy spectrum function E(κ) valid in both large and small eddy ranges that allows to calibrate more precisely the csgs2 function involved in the subgrid dissipation rate sgs transport equation. The model is also proposed here in an extended form which remains valid in low Reynolds number turbulent flows. This is achieved by considering a characteristic turbulence length-scale based on the total turbulent energy and the total dissipation rate taking into account the subgrid and resolved parts of the dissipation rate. These improvements allow to consider a large range of flows including various free flows as well as bounded flows. The present model is first tested on the decay of homogeneous isotropic turbulence by referring to the well known experiment of Comte-Bellot and Corrsin. Then, initial perturbed spectra E(κ) with a peak or a defect of energy are considered for analysing the model capabilities in strong non-equilibrium flow situations. The second test case is the classical fully turbulent channel flow that allows to assess the performance of the model in non-homogeneous flows characterised by important anisotropy effects. Different simulations are performed on coarse and refined meshes for checking the grid independence of solutions as well as the consistency of the subgrid-scale model when the filter width is changed. A special attention is devoted to the sharing out of the energy between the subgrid-scales and the resolved scales. Both the mean velocity and the turbulent stress computations are compared with data from direct numerical simulations.  相似文献

Two-equation models that treat the transport equations for two variables are typical models for the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation. Compared to the equation for the turbulent kinetic energy, the equation for the second variable such as the dissipation rate does not have a theoretical analogue. In this work, the exact transport equation for the eddy diffusivity was derived and examined for better understanding turbulence and improving two-equation models. A new length scale was first introduced, which involves the response function for the scalar fluctuation. It was shown that the eddy diffusivity can be expressed as the correlation between the velocity fluctuation and the new length scale. The transport equations for the eddy diffusivity and the length-scale variance were derived theoretically. Statistics such as terms in the transport equations were evaluated using the direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow. It was shown that the streamwise component of the eddy diffusivity is greater than the other two components in the whole region. In the transport equation for the eddy diffusivity, the production term due to the Reynolds stress is a main positive term, whereas the pressure–length-gradient correlation term plays a role of destruction. It is expected that the analysis of the transport equations is helpful in developing better turbulence models.  相似文献

Highly-resolved LES and experimental data for a plane wall jet are used to study the characteristics of turbulence-closure proposals, mainly within the framework of second-moment-transport modelling. The study is motivated by the observed importance of diffusive Reynolds-stress transport in the interaction region between the outer shear layer and the near-wall layer of the wall jet, which gives the near-wall flow characteristics that are very different from those of a conventional boundary layer. Comparisons are presented for mean-flow quantities, second moments and budgets. Also included are a priori studies of approximations for the pressure-velocity interaction, pressure-fluctuation-driven transport and turbulent transport of the Reynolds stresses by triple correlations, the last observed to contribute significantly to the stress budgets. The study reveals major defects in the closure approximations for the pressure-velocity interaction terms, especially in the near-wall region. These defects result in a poor representation by the particular second-moment closures investigated of even the integral and mean-flow characteristics of the wall jet.  相似文献

M = 2.25 shock‐wave/turbulent‐boundary‐layer interactions over a compression ramp for several angles (8, 13 and 18°) at Reynolds‐number Re=7 × 103 were simulated with three low‐Reynolds second‐moment closures and a linear low‐Reynolds standard k–ε model. A detailed assessment of the turbulence closures by comparison with both mean‐flow and turbulent experimental quantities is presented. The Reynolds‐stress model which is wall‐topology free and which uses an optimized redistribution closure, is in good agreement with experimental data both for wall‐pressure and mean‐velocity profiles. Detailed analysis of three components of the Reynolds‐stress tensor (comparison with measurements and transport‐equation budgets) provides a critical evaluation of full Reynolds‐stress models for the separated supersonic compression ramp. The discrepancy observed in the shock‐wave foot region, between computations and measurements for the Reynolds‐stresses profiles, could be explained by considering the experimental shock‐wave oscillation and directions for future modelling work are indicated.  The Reynolds-averaged flow for a solid/free-surface juncture boundary layer and wake is documented. The three mean-velocity components and five of the Reynolds stresses are measured for a surface-piercing flat plate in a towing tank using a laser-Doppler velocimeter system for both boundary-layer and wake planes in regions close to the free surface. The experimental method is described, including the foil-plate model, laser-Doppler velocimeter system, conditions, and uncertainty analysis. The underlying flow data is in excellent agreement with benchmark data. Inner (near the plate and wake centerplane and below the free surface) and outer (near the free surface) regions of high streamwise vorticity of opposite sign are observed, which transport, respectively, high mean velocity and low turbulence from the outer to the inner and low mean velocity and high turbulence from the inner to the outer portions of the boundary layer and wake. For the wake, the inner region of vorticity is relatively weak. The physical mechanism for the streamwise vorticity is analyzed with regard to the Reynolds-averaged streamwise vorticity equation. The anisotropy of the crossplane normal Reynolds stresses closely correlates with the vorticity and, additionally, indicates similarity, i.e., its nature is such that it only depends on the proximity to the plate and free surface boundaries or wake centerplane symmetry plane. Free-surface effects on the Reynolds stresses are analyzed with regard to the behavior close to the free surface of the turbulent kinetic energy and the normal components of the anisotropy tensor and the anisotropy invariants. Close to the free surface, the turbulent kinetic energy is nearly constant and increases for the inner and outer portions, respectively, of the boundary layer and wake and the normal components of the anisotropy tensor and the anisotropy invariants roughly correspond to the limiting values for two-component turbulence. The similarities and differences between the present results and analysis with those from related studies are discussed. The data and analysis should have practical application with regard to the development of turbulence models for computational fluid dynamics methods for the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. Non-equilibrium turbulence phenomena have raised great interests in recent years. Significant efforts have been devoted to non-equilibrium turbulence properties in canonical flows, e.g., grid turbulence, turbulent wakes, and homogeneous isotropic turbulence(HIT). The non-equilibrium turbulence in non-canonical flows, however, has rarely been studied due to the complexity of the flows. In the present contribution, a directnumerical simulation(DNS) database of a turbulent flow is analyzed over a backwardfacing ramp, the flow near the boundary is demonstrated, and the non-equilibrium turbulent properties of the flow in the wake of the ramp are presented by using the characteristic parameters such as the dissipation coefficient C and the skewness of longitudinal velocity gradient Sk, but with opposite underlying turbulent energy transfer properties. The equation of Lagrangian velocity gradient correlation is examined, and the results show that non-equilibrium turbulence is the result of phase de-coherence phenomena, which is not taken into account in the modeling of non-equilibrium turbulence. These findings are expected to inspire deeper investigation of different non-equilibrium turbulence phenomena in different flow conditions and the improvement of turbulence modeling.  相似文献
