The emerging push of the differentiable programming paradigm in scientific computing is conducive to training deep learning turbulence models using indirect observations. This paper demonstrates the viability of this approach and presents an end-to-end differentiable framework for training deep neural networks to learn eddy viscosity models from indirect observations derived from the velocity and pressure fields. The framework consists of a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes(RANS) solver and a neuralnetwork-represented turbulence model, each accompanied by its derivative computations. For computing the sensitivities of the indirect observations to the Reynolds stress field, we use the continuous adjoint equations for the RANS equations, while the gradient of the neural network is obtained via its built-in automatic differentiation capability. We demonstrate the ability of this approach to learn the true underlying turbulence closure when one exists by training models using synthetic velocity data from linear and nonlinear closures. We also train a linear eddy viscosity model using synthetic velocity measurements from direct numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations for which no true underlying linear closure exists. The trained deep-neural-network turbulence model showed predictive capability on similar flows.  相似文献

In this paper, we describe an implicit hybrid finite volume (FV)/element (FE) incompressible Navier–Stokes solver for turbulent flows based on the Spalart–Allmaras detached eddy simulation (SA‐DES). The hybrid FV/FE solver is based on the segregated pressure correction or projection method. The intermediate velocity field is first obtained by solving the original momentum equations with the matrix‐free implicit cell‐centered FV method. The pressure Poisson equation is solved by the node‐based Galerkin FE method for an auxiliary variable. The auxiliary variable is closely related to the real pressure and is used to update the velocity field and the pressure field. We store the velocity components at cell centers and the auxiliary variable at vertices, making the current solver a staggered‐mesh scheme. The SA‐DES turbulence equation is solved after the velocity and the pressure fields have been updated at the end of each time step. The same matrix‐free FV method as the one used for momentum equations is used to solve the turbulence equation. The turbulence equation provides the eddy viscosity, which is added to the molecular viscosity when solving the momentum equation. In our implementation, we focus on the accuracy, efficiency and robustness of the SA‐DES model in a hybrid flow solver. This paper will address important implementation issues for high‐Reynolds number flows where highly stretched elements are typically used. In addition, some aspects of implementing the SA‐DES model will be described to ensure the robustness of the turbulence model. Several numerical examples including a turbulent flow past a flat plate and a high‐Reynolds number flow around a high angle‐of‐attack NACA0015 airfoil will be presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our current implementation. A single-point model eddy viscosity model of rotation effects on the turbulent flow in an axially rotating pipe is developed based on two-point closure theories. Rotation is known to impede energy transfer in turbulence; this fact is reflected in the present model through a reduced eddy viscosity, leading to laminarization of the mean velocity profile and return to a laminar friction law in the rapid rotation limit. This model is compared with other proposals including linear redistribution effects through the rapid pressure-strain correlation, Richardson number modification of the eddy viscosity in a model of non-rotating turbulence, and the reduction of turbulence through the suppression of near-wall production mechanisms. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of the decay of isotropic turbulence and of channel flow has been performed using an explicit second-order unstructured grid algorithm for tetrahedral cells. The algorithm solves for cell-averaged values using the finite volume form of the unsteady compressible Jittered Navier-Stokes equations. The inviscid fluxes are obtained from Godunov's exact Riemann solver. Reconstruction of the flow variables to the left and right sides of each face is performed using least squares or Frink's method. The viscous fluxes and heat transfer are obtained by application of Gauss' theorem. LES of the decay of nearly incompressible isotropic turbulence has been performed using two models for the SGS stresses: the Monotone Integrated Large Eddy Simulation (MILES) approach, wherein the inherent numerical dissipation models the sub-grid scale (SGS) dissipation, and the Smagorinsky SGS model. The results using the MILES approach with least squares reconstruction show good agreement with incompressible experimental data. The contribution of the Smagorinsky SGS model is negligible. LES of turbulent channel flow was performed at a Reynolds number (based on channel height and bulk velocity) of 5600 and Mach number of 0.5 (at which compressibility effects are minimal) using Smagorinsky's SGS model with van Driest damping. The results show good agreement with experimental data and direct numerical simulations for incompressible channel flow. The SGS eddy viscosity is less than 10% of the molecular viscosity, and therefore the LES is effectively MILES with molecular viscosity.  相似文献

Simulations of geophysical turbulent flows require a robust and accurate subgrid-scale turbulence modeling. To evaluate turbulence models for stably stratified flows, we performed direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of the transition of the three-dimensional Taylor–Green vortex and of homogeneous stratified turbulence with large-scale horizontal forcing. In these simulations we found that energy dissipation is concentrated within thin layers of horizontal tagliatelle-like vortex sheets between large pancake-like structures. We propose a new implicit subgrid-scale model for stratified fluids, based on the Adaptive Local Deconvolution Method (ALDM). Our analysis proves that the implicit turbulence model ALDM correctly predicts the turbulence energy budget and the energy spectra of stratified turbulence, even though dissipative structures are not resolved on the computational grid.  相似文献

In this paper, statistical post-processing of measured velocity, dissipation rate and turbulence data is performed to establish whole-field distributions of entropy production within a channel. Thermal irreversibilities arising from temperature variations were not included in the study, as the experiments were conducted between unheated plexiglass plates in an essentially isothermal water tunnel. Unlike velocity or temperature, the measurement of entropy cannot be performed directly, so entropy production is measured indirectly through spatial differencing of measured velocities in large eddy PIV. In contrast to single-point methods of anemometry, large eddy PIV enables whole-field, time-varying measurements of the velocity field, which can be post-processed to yield entire spatial variations of the entropy production rate. An uncertainty analysis is performed to estimate measurement uncertainties with the new experimental technique. The uncertainties are decomposed into systematic and random components, including a propagated uncertainty, due to spatial differencing of the velocity field. Close comparisons between measured results of turbulence dissipation and direct numerical simulations provide useful verification of the formulation, before post-processed results of dissipation rates are used to determine entropy production within a channel.  相似文献

It is shown that the eddy viscosity profile in a quasi-three-dimensional numerical tidal and storm surge model can be estimated by assimilation of velocity data from one or more current meters located on the same vertical line. The computational model used is a simplified version of the so-called vertical/horizontal splitting algorithm proposed by Lardner and Cekirge. We have estimated eddy viscosity both as a constant and as a variable parameter. The numerical scheme consists of a two-level leapfrog method to solve the depth-averaged equations and a generalized Crank-Nicolson scheme to compute the vertical profile of the velocity field. The cost functional in the adjoint scheme consists of two terms. The first term is a certain norm of the difference between computed and observed velocity data and the second term measures the total variation in the eddy viscosity function. The latter term is not needed when the data are exact for the model but is necessary to smooth out the instabilities associated with ‘noisy’ data. It is shown that a satisfactory minimization can be accomplished using either the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) quasi-Newton algorithm or Nash's truncated Newton algorithm. Very effective estimation of eddy viscosity profiles is shown to be achieved even when the amount of data is quite small.  相似文献

Prediction of the characteristics of turbulent flows with strong streamline curvature, such as flows in turbomachines, curved channel flows, flows around airfoils and buildings, is of great importance in engineering applications and poses a very practical challenge for turbulence modeling. In this paper, we analyze qualitatively the curvature effects on the structure of turbulence and conduct numerical simulations of a turbulent Uduct flow with a number of turbulence models in order to assess their overall performance. The models evaluated in this work are some typical linear eddy viscosity turbulence models, nonlinear eddy viscosity turbulence models (NLEVM) (quadratic and cubic), a quadratic explicit algebraic stress model (EASM) and a Reynolds stress model (RSM) developed based on the second-moment closure. Our numerical results show that a cubic NLEVM that performs considerably well in other benchmark turbulent flows, such as the Craft, Launder and Suga model and the Huang and Ma model, is able to capture the major features of the highly curved turbulent U-duct flow, including the damping of turbulence near the convex wall, the enhancement of turbulence near the concave wall, and the subsequent turbulent flow separation. The predictions of the cubic models are quite close to that of the RSM, in relatively good agreement with the experimental data, which suggests that these models may be employed to simulate the turbulent curved flows in engineering applications.  相似文献

Traditional turbulence models using constant turbulent Prandtl number fail to predict the experimentally observed anisotropies in the thermal eddy diffusivity and thermal turbulent intensity fields. Accurate predictions depend strongly on the turbulence model employed. Consequently, the objective of this paper is to assess the performance of turbulence model with variable turbulent Prandtl number in predicting of thermal and scalar fields quantities. The model is applied to axisymmetric turbulent round jet with variable density and in turbulent hydrogen diffusion flames using the flamelet concept. The k − ɛ turbulence model is used in conjunction with thermal field; the model involves solving supplemental scalar equations for the temperature variance and its dissipation rate. The model predictions are compared with available experimental data for the purpose of validating model. In reacting cases, velocity and scalar (including temperature and mass fractions) predictions agree relatively well in the near field of the investigated diluted hydrogen flames.  相似文献

Separation control over a backward-facing step (BFS) flow by continuous suction was numerically investigated using the turbulence model of large eddy simulation (LES). The effect of suction control on the flow fields was scrutinised by altering the suction flow coefficient, and the results indicate that suction is not only very effective in shortening the reattachment length but also very influential in reducing the tangential velocity gradient and turbulence fluctuations of the reattached flows. With increasing increments of the absolute suction flow coefficient, the effect of suction control is more significant. Furthermore, the detailed flow fields (including the time-averaged stream and velocity fields) and turbulence characteristics (including the time-averaged resolved kinetic energy and RMS velocity) for the BFS models with or without suction are presented to discuss the mechanism of suction control. Comparisons of the time-averaged statistics between the numerical simulations and corresponding experiments are conducted, and it shows that the LES based on the dynamic kinetic energy subgrid-scale model (DKEM) can acquire exact results. Therefore, feasibility of the numerical methods to simulate suction-controlled models is validated.  相似文献

This work focuses on the numerical dissipation features of high-order flux reconstruction (FR) method combined with different numerical fluxes in turbulence flows. The famous Roe and AUSM+ numerical fluxes together with their corresponding low-dissipation enhanced versions (LMRoe, SLAU2) and higher resolution variants (HR-LMRoe, HR-SLAU2) are incorporated into FR framework, and the dissipation interplay of these combinations is investigated in implicit large eddy simulation. The numerical dissipation stemming from these convective numerical fluxes is quantified by simulating the inviscid Gresho vortex, the transitional Taylor–Green vortex and the homogenous decaying isotropic turbulence. The results suggest that low-dissipation enhanced versions are preferential both in high-order and low-order cases to their original forms, while the use of HR-SLAU2 has marginal improvements and the HR-LMRoe leads to degenerated solution with high-order. In high-order the effects of numerical fluxes are reduced, and their viscosity may not be dissipative enough to provide physically consistent turbulence when under-resolved.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics simulations employing eddy-viscosity turbulence models remain the baseline numerical tool in the aerospace industry, mainly due to their numerical stability and computational efficiency. However, many industrially relevant cases require a level of accuracy that is not routinely achieved by global turbulence models. The simulation of leading-edge vortices shed at low aspect ratio wings is one such class of flows that remains a challenge for turbulence modelling. A local approach is proposed in which a parametrised eddy-viscosity turbulence model is calibrated using experimental results of configurations and flow conditions similar to the one being analysed. In this paper, the Spalart–Allmaras one-equation model is enhanced with additional source terms, which are exclusively active in the vortex field. An automatic optimisation procedure with experimental data as reference is then applied. The resulting optimised model improves the eddy viscosity distribution for a limited but relevant range of configurations and flow conditions.  相似文献

A new turbulence model for the flow of a two phase (liquid-liquid) flow in an inclined pipe is presented. An eddy viscosity is used to model the effects of shear induced turbulence and bubble induced turbulence. The cross-pipe momentum transport arising from the buoyant rise of bubbles across the axial flow is also modelled. Numerical simulations have been carried out in both one and two dimensions. We present an original timesaving joint RANS/LES approach to simulate turbulent premixed combustion. It is intended mainly for industrial applications where LES may not be practical. It is based on successive RANS/LES numerical modelling, where turbulent characteristics determined from RANS simulations are used in LES equations for estimation of the subgrid chemical source and viscosity. This approach has been developed using our TFC premixed combustion model, which is based on a generalization of the Kolmogorov’s ideas. We assume existence of small-scale statistically equilibrium structures not only of turbulence but also of the reaction zones. At the same time, non-equilibrium large-scale structures of reaction sheets and turbulent eddies are described statistically by model combustion and turbulence equations in RANS simulations or follow directly without modelling in LES. Assumption of small-scale equilibrium gives an opportunity to express the mean combustion rate (controlled by small-scale coupling of turbulence and chemistry) in the RANS and LES sub-problems in terms of integral or subgrid parameters of turbulence and the chemical time, i.e. the definition of the reaction rate is similar to that of the mean dissipation rate in turbulence models where it is expressed in terms of integral or subgrid turbulent parameters. Our approach therefore renders compatible the combustion and turbulent parts of the RANS and LES sub-problems and yields reasonable agreement between the RANS and averaged LES results. Combining RANS simulations of averaged fields with LES method (and especially coupled and acoustic codes) for simulation of corresponding nonstationary process (and unsteady combustion regimes) is a promising strategy for industrial applications. In this work we present results of simulations carried out employing the joint RANS/LES approach for three examples: High velocity premixed combustion in a channel, combustion in the shear flow behind an obstacle and the impinging flame (a premixed flame attached to an obstacle).  相似文献

A Hybrid RANS/LES Simulation of Turbulent Channel Flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Hybrid models combining large eddy simulation (LES) with Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulation are expected to be useful for wall modeling in the LES of high Reynolds number flows. Some hybrid simulations of turbulent channel flow have a common defect; the mean velocity profile has a mismatch between the RANS and LES regions due to a steep velocity gradient at the interface. This mismatch is reproduced and examined using a simple hybrid model; the Smagorinsky model is switched to a RANS model increasing the filter width. It is suggested that a rapid spatial variation in the eddy viscosity is responsible for an underestimate of the grid-scale shear stress and for the steep velocity gradient. To reduce the mean velocity mismatch a new scheme is proposed; additional filtering is introduced to define two kinds of velocity components at the interface between the two regions. The two components are used to remove inconsistency in the velocity equations due to a rapid variation in the filter width. Using the new scheme, simulations of channel flow are carried out with the simple hybrid model. It is shown that the grid-scale shear stress becomes large enough and most of the mean velocity mismatch is removed. Simulations for higher Reynolds numbers are carried out with the k–ε model and the one-equation subgrid-scale model. Although it is necessary to improve the turbulence models and the treatment of the buffer region, the new scheme is shown to be effective for reducing the mismatch and to be useful for developing better hybrid simulations. A perfect modeling framework for the systematic study of the effect of filter shape on the resolved scales of motion in large eddy simulation is developed. The effects of the explicit and implicit filtering approaches in large eddy simulation are considered. A simple model for smooth filtering is proposed and the related effects are analyzed. The proposed approach provides an effective research tool for assessing the behavior of sub-grid scale models in a dynamic fashion. The performances of various classical models are examined by using the perfect modeling formalism for simulating the large and/or the small residual scales effect. Numerical experiments are performed for decaying isotropic turbulence. The consistency of the sub-grid scale models with the effective composite filter employed in real simulations is discussed. The necessity of using mixed models when solving doubly-filtered Navier–Stokes equations is verified. It is found that time evolution of large scale velocity field is more sensitive to sub-grid large scale models like Bardina model, while the grid-filtered sub-filter scale model is necessary to ensure the proper energy dissipation.  相似文献

This work investigates a high‐order numerical method which is suitable for performing large‐eddy simulations, particularly those containing wall‐bounded regions which are considered on stretched curvilinear meshes. Spatial derivatives are represented by a sixth‐order compact approximation that is used in conjunction with a tenth‐order non‐dispersive filter. The scheme employs a time‐implicit approximately factored finite‐difference algorithm, and applies Newton‐like subiterations to achieve second‐order temporal and sixth‐order spatial accuracy. Both the Smagorinsky and dynamic subgrid‐scale stress models are incorporated in the computations, and are used for comparison along with simulations where no model is employed. Details of the method are summarized, and a series of classic validating computations are performed. These include the decay of compressible isotropic turbulence, turbulent channel flow, and the subsonic flow past a circular cylinder. For each of these cases, it was found that the method was robust and provided an accurate means of describing the flowfield, based upon comparisons with previous existing numerical results and experimental data. The present study experimentally investigates a turbulent jet in crossflow relevant to film cooling applications. The jet is inclined at 30°, and its mean velocity is the same as the crossflow. Magnetic resonance imaging is used to obtain the full three-dimensional velocity and concentration fields, whereas Reynolds stresses are obtained along selected planes by Particle Image Velocimetry. The critical role of the counter-rotating vortex pair in the mixing process is apparent from both velocity and concentration fields. The jet entrainment is not significantly higher than in an axisymmetric jet without crossflow, because the proximity of the wall inhibits the turbulent transport. Reynolds shear stresses correlate with velocity and concentration gradients, consistent with the fundamental assumptions of simple turbulence models. However the eddy viscosity is strongly anisotropic and non-homogeneous, being especially low along the leeward side of the jet close to injection. Turbulent diffusion acts to decouple mean velocity and concentration fields, as demonstrated by the drop in concentration flux within the streamtube issued from the hole. Volume-averaged turbulent diffusivity is calculated using a mass–flux balance across the streamtube emanating from the jet hole, and it is found to vary slowly in the streamwise direction. The data are compared with Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes simulations with standard k  ε closure and an optimal turbulent Schmidt number. The computations underestimate the strength of the counter-rotating vortex pair, due to an overestimated eddy viscosity. On the other hand the entrainment is increasingly underpredicted downstream of injection. To capture the correct macroscopic trends, eddy viscosity and eddy diffusivity should vary spatially in different ways. Therefore a constant turbulent Schmidt number formulation is inadequate for this flow.  相似文献
