In this paper we study eigenvalues of a clamped plate problem on compact domains in complete manifolds. For complete manifolds admitting special functions, we prove universal inequalities for eigenvalues of clamped plate problem independent of the domains of Payne?CPólya?CWeinberger?CYang type. These manifolds include Hadamard manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below, a class of warped product manifolds, the product of Euclidean spaces with any complete manifolds and manifolds admitting eigenmaps to a sphere. In the case of warped product manifolds, our result implies a universal inequality on hyperbolic space proved by Cheng?CYang. We also strengthen an inequality for eigenvalues of clamped plate problem on submanifolds in a Euclidean space obtained recently by Cheng, Ichikawa and Mametsuka.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the Dirichlet eigenvalue problems of second order elliptic operators in divergence form on bounded domains of complete Riemannian manifolds. We discuss the cases of submanifolds immersed in a Euclidean space, Riemannian manifolds admitting spherical eigenmaps, and Riemannian manifolds which admit l functions ${f_\alpha : M \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}}$ such that ${\langle \nabla f_\alpha, \nabla f_\beta \rangle = \delta_{\alpha \beta}}$ and Δf α = 0, where ? is the gradient operator. Some inequalities for lower order eigenvalues of these problems are established. As applications of these results, we obtain some universal inequalities for lower order eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian problem. In particular, the universal inequality for eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a unit sphere is optimal.  相似文献

In this paper, we first establish an abstract inequality for lower order eigenvalues of a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space which generalizes and extends the recent results of Cheng et al. (Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations, 38, 409-416 (2010)). Then, making use of it, we obtain some universal inequalities for lower order eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator on manifolds admitting some speciM functions. Moreover, we derive a universal inequality for lower order eigenvalues of the poly-Laplacian with any order on the Euclidean space.  相似文献

In this paper we consider eigenvalues of the Dirichlet biharmonic operator on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary (possibly empty) and prove a general inequality for them. By using this inequality, we study eigenvalues of the Dirichlet biharmonic operator on compact domains in a Euclidean space or a minimal submanifold of it and a unit sphere. We obtain universal bounds on the (k+1)th eigenvalue on such objects in terms of the first k eigenvalues independent of the domains. The estimate for the (k+1)th eigenvalue of bounded domains in a Euclidean space improves an important inequality obtained recently by Cheng and Yang.  相似文献

This paper studies Sobolev type inequalities on Riemannian manifolds. We show that on a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold the constant in the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality cannot be smaller than the optimal one on the Euclidean space of the same dimension. We also show that a complete non-compact manifold with asymptotically non-negative Ricci curvature admitting some Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality is not very far from the Euclidean space.  相似文献

We consider a class of second-order linear elliptic operators, intrinsically defined on Riemannian manifolds, that correspond to nondivergent operators in Euclidean space. Under the assumption that the sectional curvature is nonnegative, we prove a global Krylov-Safonov Harnack inequality and, as a consequence, a Liouville theorem for solutions of such equations. From the Harnack inequality, we obtain Alexandroff-Bakelman-Pucci estimates and maximum principles for subsolutions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We prove maximum and comparison principles for weak distributional solutions of quasilinear, possibly singular or degenerate, elliptic differential inequalities in divergence form on complete Riemannian manifolds. A new definition of ellipticity for nonlinear operators on Riemannian manifolds is introduced, covering the standard important examples. As an application, uniqueness results for some related boundary value problems are presented.  相似文献

This paper studies eigenvalues of the drifting Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary (possibly empty) and provides a general inequality for them. Using the general inequality, we obtain universal inequalities for eigenvalues of the drifting Laplacian of Payne-Pólya-Weinberger-Yang type for manifolds supporting some special functions. We also obtain a lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the square of the drifting Laplacian on compact manifolds with boundary under some condition on the Bakry-Ricci curvature.  相似文献

We prove a sharp upper bound and a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Wentzell–Laplace operator on compact manifolds with boundary and an isoperimetric inequality for the same eigenvalue in the case where the manifold is a bounded domain in a Euclidean space. We study some fourth order Steklov problems and obtain isoperimetric upper bound for the first eigenvalue of them. We also find all the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for two kind of fourth order Steklov problems on a Euclidean ball.  相似文献

\({{\mathfrak{L}}_{II}}\) operator is introduced by Xin (2015), which is an important extrinsic elliptic differential operator of divergence type and has profound geometric meaning. In this paper, we extend \({{\mathfrak{L}}_{II}}\) operator to a more general elliptic differential operator \({{\mathfrak{L}}_\nu}\), and investigate the clamped plate problem of bi-\({{\mathfrak{L}}_\nu}\) operator, which is denoted by \({\mathfrak{L}}_\nu ^2\) on the complete Riemannian manifolds. A general formula of eigenvalues for the \({\mathfrak{L}}_\nu ^2\) operator is established. Applying this formula, we estimate the eigenvalues on the Riemannian manifolds. As some further applications, we establish some eigenvalue inequalities for this operator on the translating solitons with respect to the mean curvature flows, submanifolds of the Euclidean spaces, unit spheres and projective spaces. In particular, for the case of translating solitons, all of the eigenvalue inequalities are universal.

In this paper we prove Gårding's inequality for linear differential operators in generalized divergence form which satisfy a generalized Ehrling inequality, an ellipticity condition and a condition on the coefficients. Using a compact imbedding between certain anisotropic Sobolev spaces we substitute the first condition (Ehrling's inequality) by a simple condition on a set of multi-indices.  相似文献

The Riemannian Penrose inequality (RPI) bounds from below the ADM mass of asymptotically flat manifolds of nonnegative scalar curvature in terms of the total area of all outermost compact minimal surfaces. The general form of the RPI is currently known for manifolds of dimension up to seven. In the present work, we prove a Penrose-like inequality that is valid in all dimensions, for conformally flat manifolds. Our inequality treats the area contributions of the minimal surfaces in a more favorable way than the RPI, at the expense of using the smaller Euclidean area (rather than the intrinsic area). We give an example in which our estimate is sharper than the RPI when many minimal surfaces are present. We do not require the minimal surfaces to be outermost. We also generalize the technique to allow for metrics conformal to a scalar-flat (not necessarily Euclidean) background and prove a Penrose-type inequality without an assumption on the sign of scalar curvature. Finally, we derive a new lower bound for the ADM mass of a conformally flat, asymptotically flat manifold containing any number of zero area singularities.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to present a version of the generalized Pohozaev-Schoen identity in the context of asymptotically Euclidean manifolds. Since these kind of geometric identities have proven to be a very powerful tool when analysing different geometric problems for compact manifolds, we will present a variety of applications within this new context. Among these applications, we will show some rigidity results for asymptotically Euclidean Ricci-solitons and Codazzi-solitons. Also, we will present an almost-Schur type inequality valid in this non-compact setting which does not need restrictions on the Ricci curvature. Finally, we will show how some rigidity results related with static potentials also follow from these type of conservation principles.  相似文献

We prove a stability theorem for the eigenvalues of general non-negative self-adjoint linear operators with compact resolvents and by applying it we prove a sharp stability result for the dependence of the eigenvalues of second order uniformly elliptic linear operators with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions upon domain perturbation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We examine analogues of the Gibbs phenomenon for eigenfunction expansions of functions with singularities across a smooth surface, though of a more general nature than a simple jump. The Gibbs phenomena that arise still have a universal form, but a more general class of “fractional sine integrals” arises, and we study these functions. We also make a uniform analysis of eigenfunction expansions in the presence of the Pinsky phenomenon, and see an analogue of the Gibbs phenomenon there. These analyses are done on three classes of manifolds: strongly scattering manifolds, including Euclidean space; compact manifolds without strongly focusing geodesic flows, including flat tori and quotients of hyperbolic space, and compact manifolds with periodic geodesic flow; including spheres and Zoll surfaces. Finally, we uncover a new divergence phenomenon for eigenfunction expansions of characteristic functions of balls, for a perturbation of the Laplace operator on a sphere of dimension ≥5.  相似文献

The authors prove a sharp logarithmic Sobolev inequality which holds for compact submanifolds without boundary in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature of arbitrary dimension and codimension. Like the Michael-Simon Sobolev inequality, this inequality includes a term involving the mean curvature. This extends a recent result of Brendle with Euclidean setting.  相似文献

This is a survey about our recent works on the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern (GBC) mass for asymptotically flat and asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We first introduce the GBC mass, a higher order mass, for asymptotically flat and for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, respectively, by using a higher order scalar curvature. Then we prove its positivity and the Penrose inequality for graphical manifolds. One of the crucial steps in the proof of the Penrose inequality is the use of an Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality, which is a classical inequality in the Euclidean space. In the hyperbolic space, we have established this new Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality. We also have a similar work for asymptotically locally hyperbolic manifolds. At the end, we discuss the relation between the GBC mass and Chern’s magic form.  相似文献

Chernoff approximations of Feller semigroups and the associated diffusion processes in Riemannian manifolds are studied. The manifolds are assumed to be of bounded geometry, thus including all compact manifolds and also a wide range of non-compact manifolds. Sufficient conditions are established for a class of second order elliptic operators to generate a Feller semigroup on a (generally non-compact) manifold of bounded geometry. A construction of Chernoff approximations is presented for these Feller semigroups in terms of shift operators. This provides approximations of solutions to initial value problems for parabolic equations with variable coefficients on the manifold. It also yields weak convergence of a sequence of random walks on the manifolds to the diffusion processes associated with the elliptic generator. For parallelizable manifolds this result is applied in particular to the representation of Brownian motion on the manifolds as limits of the corresponding random walks.  相似文献
