During the production of pharmaceutical tablets using powder compaction, certain common problems can occur, such as sticking, tearing, cutting, and lamination. In the past, the compressibility of the powder was calculated only along the axis of the device; consequently, critical areas of the material throughout the volume could not be identified. Therefore, finite element method (FEM) can be used to predict these defects in conjunction with the use of an appropriate constitutive model. This article summarizes the current research in the field of powder compaction, describes the Drucker-Prager Cap model calibration procedure and its implementation in FEM, and also examines the mechanical behavior of powder during compaction. In addition, the mechanical behavior of pharmaceutical powders in relation to changes in friction at the wall of the system is examined, and the dependence of lubrication effect on the geometry of the compaction space is also investigated. The influence of friction on the compaction process for the flat-face, fiat-face radius edge, and standard convex tablets is examined while highlighting how the effects of friction change depending on the shape of these tablets.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the modelling of a specific ramming mix mainly used in the high-temperature industry due to its high-compacting behaviour. This material has the ability to absorb the deformation of parts submitted to high thermal loads. Triaxial and instrumented die compaction tests were carried out in order to identify the shear and hardening behaviours, respectively. Tests on the ramming mix were led for a temperature range between 20 °C and 80 °C. The temperature effect is particularly observed on the material response when it is compacted. The main features of the behaviour of the ramming mix can be represented by the theoretical framework of the Modified Cam-Clay model. A single variable allows to accurately reproduce the hardening behaviour depending on the temperature. Moreover, an extension of the model for the hardening behaviour at high pressures is proposed. A good agreement between the experimental data and numerical tests is reached with this model.  相似文献

Most of the technologically relevant abrasive machining techniques for silicon (Si) such as lapping, sawing and grinding are based on the interaction of the silicon surface with a hard particle or asperity. It has been long established that the governing deformation mechanism for Si under such contact loading conditions is stress induced phase transformation. The present work introduces a novel phenomenological constitutive model for phase transformations of silicon set up in a thermomechanical framework of broad applicability. Taking into account experimental observations as well as first principle and molecular dynamics calculations, it captures both the cd-Si  β-Si transition upon compression and the β-Si  a-Si transition upon rapid decompression, which are most relevant for indenter loading. The model was numerically implemented in analogy to incremental plasticity and successfully applied for finite-element (FE) simulations of nanoindentation.  相似文献

The static and dynamic compaction of ceramic powders was investigated experimentally using a high-pressure friction-compensated press to achieve static stresses of 1.6 GPa and with a novel gas gun setup to stresses of 5.9 GPa for a tungsten carbide powder. Experiments were performed in the partial compaction region to nearly full compaction. The effects of variables including initial density, particle size distribution, particle morphology, and loading path were investigated in the static experiments. Only particle morphology was found to significantly affect the compaction response. Post-test examination of the powder reveals fracture of the grains as well as breaking at particle edges. In dynamic experiments, steady structured compaction waves traveling at very low velocities were observed. The strain rate within the compaction waves was found to scale nearly linearly with the shock stress, in contrast with many fully dense materials where strain rate scales with stress to the fourth power. Similar scaling is found for data from the literature on TiO2 powder. The dynamic response of WC powder is found to be significantly stiffer than the static response, probably because deformation in the dynamic case is confined to the relatively narrow compaction wave front. Comparison of new static powder compaction results with shock data from the literature for SiO2 also reveals a stiffer dynamic response.  相似文献

The mechanical strength of solid catalysts is considered an important factor in terms of ensuring the reliable performance of industrial reactors. In this work, a pelletizing method was used to form gamma alumina support for catalysts. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to analyze and model the effects of various manufacturing parameters on the crushing strength of the supports. These parameters were binder concentration, compaction pressure, calcination temperature, and drying mode. The suggested model was verified by applying an analysis of variance to assess its validity with regard to crushing strength. The mechanical reliability of various supports was also determined by calculating their Weibull modulus values through linear regression of the Weibull equation. The material with the highest mechanical strength reliability will have both a high mean crushing strength and a high Weibull modulus, and the best values obtained for a support in this work were 70.7 MPa and 6.63, respectively. The conditions used to form this sample were: 20 mass% binder concentration, 861 MPa compaction pressure, 466 °C calcination temperature, and gentle drying.  相似文献

For axi-symmetrically notched tension bars [Dyson, B.F., Loveday, M.S., 1981, Creep Fracture in Nimonic 80A under Tri-axial Tensile Stressing, In: Ponter A.R.S., Hayhurst, D.R. (Eds.), Creep in Structures, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, pp. 406–421] show two types of damage propagation are shown: for low stress, failure propagates from the outside notch surface to the centre-line; and for high stress, failure propagates from the centre-line to the outside notch surface. The objectives of the paper are to: identify the physics of the processes controlling global failure modes; and, describe the global behaviour using physics-based constitutive equations. Two sets of constitutive equations are used to model the softening which takes place in tertiary creep of Nimonic 80A at 750 °C. Softening by multiplication of mobile dislocations is firstly combined, for low stress, with softening due to nucleation controlled creep constrained cavity growth; and secondly combined, for high stress, with softening due to continuum void growth. The Continuum Damage Mechanics, CDM, Finite Element Solver DAMAGE XX has been used to study notch creep fracture. Low stress notch behaviour is accurately predicted provided that the constitutive equations take account of the effect of stress level on creep ductility. High stress notch behaviour is accurately predicted from a normalized inverse cavity spacing d/2? = 6, and an initial normalized cavity radius rhi/? = 3.16 × 10?3, where 2? is the cavity spacing, and d is the grain size; however, the constants in the strain rate equation required recalibration against high stress notch data. A void nucleation mechanism is postulated for high stress behaviour which involves decohesion where slip bands intersect second phase grain boundary particles. Both equation sets accurately predict experimentally observed global failure modes.  相似文献

Soil compaction can occur due to machine traffic and is an indicator of soil physical structure degradation. For this study 3 strain transducers with a maximum displacement of 5 cm were used to measure soil compaction under the rear tire of MF285 tractor. In first series of experiments, the effect of tractor traffic was investigated using displacement transducers and cylindrical cores. For the second series, only strain transducers were used to evaluate the effect of moisture levels of 11%, 16% and 22%, tractor velocities of 1, 3 and 5 km/h, and three depths of 20, 30 and 40 cm on soil compaction, and soil behavior during the compaction process was investigated. Results showed that no significant difference was found between the two methods of measuring the bulk density. The three main factors were significant on soil compaction at a probability level of 1%. The mutual binary effect of moisture and depth was significant at 1%, and the interaction of moisture, velocity, and depth were significant at 5%. The soil was compressed in the vertical direction and elongated in the lateral direction. In the longitudinal direction, the soil was initially compressed by the approaching tractor, then elongated, and ultimately compressed again.  相似文献

The present study employs a transient liquid crystal thermography to measure film cooling performance over constant curvature of concave and convex surfaces. This work investigates detailed distributions of both film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient on concave and convex surfaces with one row of injection holes inclined stream-wise at 35° at four blowing ratios (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) on four test pieces with different hole configurations. All test models have a row of discrete holes with a stream-wise injection angle (γ of 35° and a pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/d) of 3. The current work examines four different injection configurations, one with simple and three with 8° forward-expanded holes. Three compound angles of 0, 45 and 90° with air (ρc/ρm = 0.98) as coolants are tested under the mainstream Reynolds number (Red) of 2300 on concave surface, and 1700 on convex surface. Measured results of the concave surface show that both the span-wise averaged heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness increase with blowing ratios for all tested models. Higher heat transfer levels induced by large flow disturbance of compound-angle injection also lead to poorer overall film cooling performance, especially at high blowing ratio and large span-wise injection angle. Present results show that the best surface protection on the concave surface over the widest range of M can be provided by the forward-expanded holes with β = 0° (Model-B), followed by the forward-expanded holes with β = 45° (Model-C). Convex surface results show that the compound-angle injection indicates increases in both film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer at moderate and high blowing ratios. The forward-expanded hole with simple-angle injection provides the best film performance because of high film cooling effectiveness and low heat transfer coefficient at blowing ratio of 0.5.  相似文献

Nine square concrete columns including 6 CFRP/ECCs and 3 concrete columns are prepared, which have cross-section of 200 mm × 200 mm and height of 600 mm. The CFRP tubes with fibers oriented at hoop direction were manufactured to have 3 or 5 layers of CFRP with 10 mm, 20 mm, or 40 mm rounding corner radii at vertical edges. A 100 mm overlap in the direction of fibers was provided to ensure proper bond. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted to investigate the compressive behavior. It is evident that the CFRP tube confinement can improve the behavior of concrete core, in terms of axial compressive strength or axial deformability. Test results show that the stress-strain behavior of CFRP/ECCs vary with different confinement parameters, such as the number of confinement layers and the rounding corner radius.  相似文献

In the present study hydroxyapatite (HA) nano-hexagonal rods with 70-90 nm diameter and 400-500 nm length are synthesized using a simple sol-gel route with calcium nitrate and potassium dihydrogenphosphate as calcium and phosphorus precursors respectively. Deionized water was used as a diluting media for HA sol preparation and ammonia was used to adjust the pH = 9. After aging, the HA gel was dried at 60 ℃ and calcined at different temperatures ranging from 300 to 700 ℃. The dried and calcined powders were characterized for phase composition using X-ray diffractrometry, elemental dispersive X-ray and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Rietveld analysis showed the calcined HA powders of high purity with a hexagonal unit cell structure. Calcination yielded HA nanopowders of increased particle size and crystallinity with increase in temperature. The particle size and morphology was studied using transmission electron microscopy. The aspect ratio (length to diameter ratio) of HA nanorods was measured to be between 6 and 7.  相似文献

Surface Evolver software was used to create the three-dimensional geometry of a Kelvin open-cell foam, to simulate that of polyurethane flexible foams. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with 3D elements was used to model large compressive deformation in the [0 0 1] and [1 1 1] directions, using cyclic boundary conditions when necessary, treating the polyurethane as an elastic or elastic–plastic material. The predicted foam Young’s moduli in the [0 0 1] direction are double those of foams with uniform Plateau border cross-section edges, for the same foam density and material properties. For compression in the [1 1 1] direction, the normalized Young’s modulus increases from 0.9 to 1.1 with foam relative density, and the predicted stress–strain relationship can have a plateau, even for a linearly-elastic polymer. As the foam density increases, the predicted effects of material plasticity become larger. For foam of relative density 0.028, edge-to-edge contact is predicted to occur at a 66% strain for [1 1 1] direction compression. The foam is predicted to contract laterally when the [1 1 1] direction compressive strain exceeds 25%.  相似文献

A particle sub-model describing the bed characteristics of a bubbling fluidised bed is presented. Atomisation air, applied at high pressures via a nozzle positioned above the bed for spray formation, is incorporated in the model since its presence has a profound influence on the bed characteristics, though the spray itself is not yet considered. A particle sub-model is developed using well-known empirical relations for particle drag force, bubble growth and velocity and particle distribution above the fluidised-bed surface. Simple but effective assumptions and abstractions were made concerning bubble distribution, particle ejection at the bed surface and the behaviour of atomisation air flow upon impacting the surface of a bubbling fluidised bed. The model was shown to be capable of predicting the fluidised bed characteristics in terms of bed heights, voidage distributions and solids volume fractions with good accuracy in less than 5 min of calculation time on a regular desktop PC. It is therefore suitable for incorporation into general process control models aimed at dynamic control for process efficiency and product quality in top-spray fluidised bed coating processes.  相似文献

Delineation of mini- and micro-scale channels with respect to two-phase flow has been the subject of many research papers. There is no consensus on when the small channel can be characterized as a mini-channel or micro-channel. The idea proposed by this paper is to use the normalized bubble nose radius, liquid film thickness top over bottom ratio, and bubble shape contour, which are found under normal gravity conditions in slug flow through a horizontal adiabatic channel, as the delineation criteria. The input parameters are bubble nose radius and bubble nose velocity as the characteristic length scale and characteristic velocity scale respectively. 3D numerical simulation with ANSYS FLUENT was used to obtain the necessary data. Following CFD practice, a mesh independence study and a numerical model validation against published experimental data were both conducted. Analysis of the numerical simulation results showed that channels with D  100 μm can be characterized as a micro-system, while channels with D  400 μm belong to mini-systems. The region 200 μm  D  300 μm represents a transition from the micro-scale to mini-scale.  相似文献

In the presence of sharp (zero radius) V-shaped notches the notch stress intensity factors (N-SIFs) quantify the intensities of the asymptotic linear elastic stress distributions. They are proportional to the limit of the mode I or II stress components multiplied by the distance powered 1  λi from the notch tip, λi being Williams’ eigenvalues. When the notch tip radius is different from zero, the definition is no longer valid from a theoretical point of view and the characteristic, singular, sharp-notch field diverges from the rounded-notch solution very next to the notch. Nevertheless, N-SIFs continue to be used as parameters governing fracture if the notch root radius is sufficiently small with respect to the notch depth.Taking advantage of a recent analytical formulation able to describe stress distributions ahead of rounded V-notches, the paper gives a generalized form for the notch stress intensity factors, in which not only the opening angle but also the tip radius dimension is explicitly involved. Such parameters quantify the stress redistribution due to the root radius with respect to the sharp notch case.  相似文献

A finite-element model of the cold compaction of ceramic powders by uniaxial pressing is developed and validated by comparison with experimental data. The mechanical behavior of processing powders is assumed according to the modified Drucker-Prager cap model. The frictional effects and the mechanical behavior of tools involved in the process are taken into account. The proposed model allows evaluation of the density distribution into the processed part, as well as stress and strain fields. Variations of the density distribution due to the unloading and the ejection of the part are evaluated Published in Prikladnaya Mekhanika, Vol. 42, No. 10, pp. 135–143, October 2006.  相似文献

A fundamental step in the production of an industrial catalyst is its crushing strength assessment. Limited literature exists in which the strength reliability of supported catalysts is investigated from production to their application in a reactor. In this work, cylindrical supports were prepared by pelletizing high porosity γ-alumina powder, and Cu–Zn/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by impregnation of the pelletized γ-alumina supports with an aqueous solution of copper and zinc nitrates. The support-forming variables, such as binder concentration, compaction pressure, calcination temperature, and drying procedure were investigated. The Weibull method was used to analyze the crushing strength data of the supports, and the fresh and used catalysts before and after the low-temperature water gas shift reaction. Support formation at a 50 wt% binder concentration, 1148 MPa compaction pressure, 500 °C calcination temperature, and rapid drying (100 °C, 8 h) led to the maximum support mechanical reliability. The most reliable catalyst with respect to simultaneous appropriate catalytic performance and mechanical strength was prepared from a support with the lowest mean crushing strength (26.25 MPa). This work illustrates the importance of the Weibull modulus as a useful mechanical reliability index in manufacturing a supported solid catalyst.  相似文献

Pipeline slurry flow of mono-dispersed particles through horizontal bend is numerically simulated by implementing Eulerian two-phase model in FLUENT software. A hexagonal shape and Cooper type non-uniform three-dimensional grid is chosen to discretize the entire computational domain, and a control volume finite difference method is used to solve the governing equations. The modeling results are compared with the experimental data collected in 53.0 mm diameter horizontal bend with radius of 148.4 mm for concentration profiles and pressure drops. Experiments are performed on narrow-sized silica sand with mean diameter of 450 μm and for flow velocity up to 3.56 m/s (namely, 1.78, 2.67 and 3.56 m/s) and four efflux concentrations up to 16.28% (namely, 0%, 3.94%, 8.82% and 16.28%) by volume for each velocity. Eulerian model gives fairly accurate predictions for both the pressure drop and concentration profiles at all efflux concentrations and flow velocities.  相似文献

The effects of varying the mass and volume of ground chip and pellet particles on the particle drying rate were analyzed. Samples of whole pellets and chips were hammer milled using a 3.2 mm screen and the ground chip and pellet particles were found to have similar size distributions, although the pellet particles were denser and more spherical than the chip particles. Prior to drying, water was added to the particles to obtain 0.10, 0.30, 0.50, 0.70, and 0.90 moisture contents (on a dry mass basis). The moistened particles were subsequently dried in a constant temperature thin layer dryer set at 50, 100, 150, or 200 °C under dry pure nitrogen, dry compressed air, or atmospheric air. The chip and pellet particles exhibited similar degrees of shrinkage, but the pellet particles underwent a greater reduction in their bulk volume during drying. It appears that the more spherical pellet particles are prone to shrinkage in more than one direction, whereas the needle-like chip particle shrink only in one direction. A variable radius first order drying model was found to fit the experimental data better than a fixed radius model.  相似文献

Numerical and experimental methods were used to explore temperature and pressure distributions inside an irregularly-shaped cavity of a novel three-dimensional space environment simulator (SES) system. In order to obtain better temperature and pressure distributions, a plenum chamber and airflow diffusion perforated plate were adopted. Three-dimensional heat and mass transfer characteristics were analyzed using the Standard kε turbulence model. Simulation results revealed that the temperature and pressure distributions were greatly improved with improved diffusion configuration design, the temperature gradient decreased from 5 K to 1 K, and the pressure gradient decreased to 0.5% of the former value. Based on the simulation results, an improved experimental system for simulating space environment was set up. This experiment system could supply airflow with temperature ranging from 193 K to 353 K for simulating the real space environment. Experimental results showed that the temperature and pressure fields had smaller gradients across the surface and the inner cavity, which agreed considerably with the numerical results. The results of this study present useful information for the design of similar cavity structure.  相似文献
