In this paper, a contextual approach to teaching Mathematics at the pre-university level is recommended, and an example is illustrated. A context in the form of a real common mathematical problem is presented to the students. Different approaches to tackle the problem (from topics within and outside the syllabus) can be elicited from students. The insight obtained from the various methods of solving the problem can be used to deepen students’ learnt concepts and to enhance concepts to be learnt later in the curriculum.  相似文献

In this article, we report the results of research that explores the intra-mathematical connections that high school students make when they solve Calculus tasks, in particular those involving the derivative and the integral. We consider mathematical connections as a cognitive process through which a person relates or associates two or more ideas, concepts, definitions, theorems, procedures, representations and meanings among themselves, with other disciplines or with real life. Task-based interviews were used to collect data and thematic analysis was used to analyze them. Through the analysis of the productions of the 25 participants, we identified 223 intra-mathematical connections. The data allowed us to establish a mathematical connections system which contributes to the understanding of higher concepts, in our case, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. We found mathematical connections of the types: different representations, procedural, features, reversibility and meaning as a connection.  相似文献

Clustering is one of the most widely used approaches in data mining with real life applications in virtually any domain. The huge interest in clustering has led to a possibly three-digit number of algorithms with the k-means family probably the most widely used group of methods. Besides classic bivalent approaches, clustering algorithms belonging to the domain of soft computing have been proposed and successfully applied in the past four decades. Bezdek’s fuzzy c-means is a prominent example for such soft computing cluster algorithms with many effective real life applications. More recently, Lingras and West enriched this area by introducing rough k-means. In this article we compare k-means to fuzzy c-means and rough k-means as important representatives of soft clustering. On the basis of this comparison, we then survey important extensions and derivatives of these algorithms; our particular interest here is on hybrid clustering, merging fuzzy and rough concepts. We also give some examples where k-means, rough k-means, and fuzzy c-means have been used in studies.  相似文献

In this paper we present the problem of scheduling instructors in a university management development programme. Problems of similar structure arise in a number of scheduling applications like assigning officials to athletic competitions, inspectors to sites and maintenance crews to jobs. The problem is formulated as a zero-one linear integer programme but is difficult to solve in real life situations because of problem size. The bounds on total assignments for different nested time periods give sub-problems that can be solved as network flow problems. Four Lagrangian relaxation heuristics are developed using different relaxations of the problem. Computational results are reported on 1350 random problems. In over 85% of these problems, the heuristics find solutions within 1% of the optimal. Heuristic performance is also analyzed in terms of average percent deviation from optimal, percent of times optimal solution is found and the cpu time. Computational results on two significantly larger real problems indicate that the heuristics are capable of solving real sized problems with tolerable deviations of around 4% from the optimal. An integrated strategy utilizing the strengths of the optimal and heuristic approaches is described for schedule generation and updating.  相似文献

Real linear operators arise in a range of applications of mathematical physics. In this paper, basic properties of real linear operators are studied and their spectral theory is developed. Suitable extensions of classical operator theoretic concepts are introduced. Providing a concrete class, real linear multiplication operators are investigated and, motivated by the Beltrami equation, related problems of unitary approximation are addressed.  相似文献

The Common Core Standard for Mathematical Practice 4: Model with Mathematics specifies that mathematically proficient students are able to make connections between school mathematics and its applications to solving real‐world problems. Hence, mathematics teachers are expected to incorporate connections between mathematical concepts they teach and their applications to solving problems arising in real‐world situation. Clearly, it is assumed that the teachers themselves are able to make such connections. On the other hand, research shows that mathematics teachers find it difficult to make those connections. In this paper, we present the results of the study that investigated the ways in which exploring mathematics in informal sites, and in particular science museum, assist teachers with making connections between school mathematics and its applications in real world.  相似文献

Consider a sports competition among various teams playing against each other in pairs (matches) according to a previously determined schedule. At some stage of the competition one may ask whether a particular team still has a (theoretical) chance to win the competition. The computational complexity of this question depends on the way scores are allocated according to the outcome of a match. For competitions with at most 3 different outcomes of a match the complexity is already known. In practice there are many competitions in which more than 3 outcomes are possible. We determine the complexity of the above problem for competitions with an arbitrary number of different outcomes. Our model also includes competitions that are asymmetric in the sense that away playing teams possibly receive other scores than home playing teams.  相似文献

The class of phase‐type distributions has recently gained much popularity in insurance applications due to its mathematical tractability and denseness in the class of distributions defined on positive real line. In this paper, we show how to use the phase‐type mortality law as an efficient risk management tool for various life insurance applications. In particular, pure premiums, benefit reserves, and risk‐loaded premiums using CTE for standard life insurance products are shown to be available in analytic forms, leading to efficient computation and straightforward implementation. A way to explicitly determine provisions for adverse deviation for interest rate and mortality is also proposed. Furthermore, we show how the interest rate risk embedded in life insurance portfolios can be analyzed via interest rate sensitivity index and diversification index which are constructed based on the decomposition of portfolio variance. We also consider the applicability of phase‐type mortality law under a few non‐flat term structures of interest rate. Lastly, we explore how other properties of phase‐type distributions may be applied to joint‐life products as well as subgroup risk ordering and pricing within a given pool of insureds. According to many observations, traditional mathematics education falls within the exercise paradigm. This paradigm is contrasted with landscapes of investigation serving as invitations for students to be involved in processes of exploration and explanation. The distinction between the exercise paradigm and landscapes of investigation is combined with a distinction between three different types of reference which might provide mathematical concepts and classroom activities with meaning: references to mathematics; references to a semi-reality, and references to a real-life situation. The six possible learning milieus are illustrated by examples. Moving away from the exercise paradigm and in the direction of landscapes of investigation may help to abandon the authorities of the traditional mathematics classroom and to make students the acting subjects in their learning processes. Moving away from reference to pure mathematics and in the direction of real life references may help to provide resources for reflection on mathematics and its applications. My hope is that finding a route among the different milieus of learning may provide new resources for making the students both acting and reflecting and in this way providing mathematics education with a critical dimension.  相似文献

Many real life problems can be stated as a continuous minimax optimization problem. Well-known applications to engineering, finance, optics and other fields demonstrate the importance of having reliable methods to tackle continuous minimax problems. In this paper a new approach to the solution of continuous minimax problems over reals is introduced, using tools based on modal intervals. Continuous minimax problems, and global optimization as a particular case, are stated as the computation of semantic extensions of continuous functions, one of the key concepts of modal intervals. Modal intervals techniques allow to compute, in a guaranteed way, such semantic extensions by means of an efficient algorithm. Several examples illustrate the behavior of the algorithms in unconstrained and constrained minimax problems.  相似文献

Statistical methods can be useful in rating non-elite tennis players. This paper shows how clubs can use simple optimization techniques to rate their club's players in doubles tennis competitions. Even though clubs lack all relevant information, the effects of home advantage, position played, partner and strength of team opposition can be taken into account and evaluated. The results from all competing clubs, available to the body organizing the competition, are used to rate all players in the competition, and validate the results that were obtained with limited information. We show a home ground advantage exists in non-elite doubles tennis. A simple exponential smoothing method of rating players is then tested, and shown to produce reasonable results.  相似文献

In this paper, I use analyses of collective argumentation in a variety of classroom settings, from elementary school to a university-level differential equations class to illustrate various roles the teacher plays. These include initiating the negotiation of classroom norms that foster argumentation as the core of students’ mathematical activity, providing support for students as they interact with each other to develop arguments, and supplying argumentative supports (data, warrants, and backing) that are either omitted or left implicit. We gain two important insights from these analyses. First, an emphasis on argumentation can be used productively to provide openings in mathematical discussions for new mathematical concepts and tools to emerge. Second, the analyses demonstrate that teachers need to have both an in-depth understanding of students’ mathematical conceptual development and a sophisticated understanding of the mathematical concepts that underlie the instructional activities being used.  相似文献

We study two continuity concepts for set-valued maps that play central roles in quantitative stability analysis of optimization problems: Aubin continuity and Lipschitzian localization. We show that various inverse function theorems involving these concepts can be deduced from a single general result on existence of solutions to an inclusion in metric spaces. As applications, we analyze the stability with respect to canonical perturbations of a mathematical program in a Hilbert space and an optimal control problem with inequality control constraints. For stationary points of these problems, Aubin continuity and Lipschitzian localization coincide; moreover, both properties are equivalent to surjectivity of the map of the gradients of the active constraints combined with a strong second-order sufficient optimality condition.  相似文献

The conventional Hahn-Banach extension theorem based on vector space has been widely used to obtain many important and interesting results in nonlinear analysis, vector optimization and mathematical economics. Although the interval space is not a real vector space, the Hahn-Banach extension theorems based on interval spaces and nonstandard normed interval spaces can still be derived in this paper, which also shows the possible applications by considering the interval-valued problems in nonlinear analysis, vector optimization and mathematical economics.  相似文献

Ideas are presented to show how fuzzy mathematics can be applied in macro-economics in combination with the systems approach in order to bridge the gap between mathematical and language-oriented economists.Two reasons are given.From a mathematical point of view, fuzzy sets, fuzzy relations and fuzzy logic are not fuzzy at all. They are all well defined, but tend to be more complicated than traditional, mathematical concepts used in economics.From a language-oriented economist's point of view, fuzzy sets, etc. are used to express mathematically the type of concepts which are typical in language and most valuable in dealing with complex systems like an economy.The paper deals with economics in general terms, but examples are provided to illustrate the ideas.  相似文献

In this paper we present an explorative study for which special cultural artifacts have been used, i.e. supermarket receipts, to try to construct with 9-year old pupils (fourth class of primary school) a new mathematical knowledge, i.e. the algorithm for multiplication of decimal numbers. Furthermore also estimation and approximation processes have been introduced, procedures that are not commonly used in ordinary teaching activity. In our study the receipts, through some modifications, have become more explicitly tools of mediation and integration between in and out-of school knowledge, so they can be utilized to create new mathematical goals, thus becoming real mathematizing tools and constituting a didactic interface between in and out-of-school mathematics. In agreement with ethnomathematical perspective we deem that it is a task for the teacher to know, in order to be able to profitably take account of the teaching, the life experienced by the pupil. Future mathematics teachers should be prepared a) to see mathematics incorporated into real world, b) to investigate mathematical ideas and practices of their pupils, and c) to look for ways to incorporate into the curriculum elements belonging to the sociocultural environment of the pupils, as a starting point for mathematical activities in the classroom. In this way the motivation, interest and curiosity of the pupils will be increased and the attitude towards mathematics of both pupils and teachers will be changed.  相似文献

This paper is concerned about the S–K–T competition model with spatially heterogeneous interactions, in which the two competing species are identical in all aspects except for their interspecific competitions. Under small variations of interspecific competitions, a good understanding of the dynamics and the structure of the set of steady states is gained by the Lyapunov–Schmidt procedure and detailed analysis. The results reveal that the role that the spatial heterogeneity plays in the coexistence of the competing species can be rather interesting and complicated. Either stable or unstable coexistence state can be produced by suitable spatial heterogeneity, so the spatial heterogeneity can be either favorable or unfavorable for the coexistence of competing species.  相似文献
