The coherent field propagation in a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer is described using a method based on the Foldy-Twersky integral equation for the vector case. Expressions for a polarization-independent phase shift and the coherent transmission coefficient of such a layer containing nanodimensional nematic liquid crystal droplets are obtained. Theoretical results for the phase shift are compared to the available experimental data. 相似文献

An optico-mechanical model describing the coherent (directed) transmittance and the degree of polarization of forward-transmitted light by a polymer film with elongated liquid-crystal (LC) drops has been developed. This model, based on the Foldy–Twersky and anomalous-diffraction approximations, makes it possible to analyze the optical response of a film under extension as a function of the film thickness, refractive index of the polymer, the sizes and anisometry parameters of liquid-crystal drops, their concentration, internal structure, polydispersity, and orientation of optical axes. The model is verified based on the comparison of numerical and experimental data for the inverse modification of interfacial anchoring by an ion-forming surfactant. The internal drop structure is determined by solving the problem of minimizing the volume free energy density. A comparative analysis of the calculated transmittance and degree of polarization for films with uniform homeotropic and modified inhomogeneous interfacial anchoring is performed. The spectral polarization characteristics of a film with elongated LC drops and single-domain internal structure, formed under mechanical extension with the aid of surfactants, are investigated. 相似文献

In this paper, relaxation behavior of transmitted light through thin ferrofluid film under an applied magnetic field is measured.
The results show that the intensity of transmitted light through a ferrofluid film increases quickly as soon as an external
magnetic field is applied then weakens with time. If uniformity of the field is poor, the transmission of light continuously
decreases in a measured duration. Otherwise, the transmission of light will tend increasingly towards a stable value after
it decreases to a minimum value while the gradient of the field is low. The relaxation time would increase to an order of
some hundreds seconds magnitude and is dependent on the strength of magnetic field and viscosity of the ferrofluids. The field-induced
relaxation behaviors of transmitted light through ferrofluids correspond to anisotropic microstructure of the ferrofluids
under applied magnetic field.

A method for computing the coherent transmittance of a film of polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystals aligned by an external field in the case of an oblique incidence of light is developed, and a theoretical analysis of this quantity is performed. The effects of close packing are considered in terms of the interference approximation of the theory of multiple wave scattering. The correlation arising in the spatial distribution of polydisperse droplets is taken into account by introducing partial distribution functions. It is shown that an increase in the concentration of liquid crystal droplets is accompanied by an increase in the coherent transmittance of the film. 相似文献

An analysis is presented of polarization-independent electrically tunable light focusing by polymerdispersed liquid-crystal films with nanosized liquid-crystal droplets. Polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal films with axially symmetric distributions of liquid-crystal droplet concentration and layers with axially symmetric thickness profiles are considered. The paraxial, Rayleigh, and Rayleigh-Gans approximations, as well as the Foldy-Twersky equation, are used to examine the dependence of focal length on lens geometry, droplet size, concentration of nematic liquid-crystal droplets, and applied field. The tunable focusing ranges are evaluated for both lens types considered in the study. Dependence of the transmittance of polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal film on its characteristics is analyzed. Liquid crystals (LCs) and polymers are extensively used in various electro-optical applications.In this paper,normal mode polymer stabilized cholesteric LC film is prepared and studied.The effects of chiral dopant and monomer concentrations on the electro-optical properties,such as contrast ratio,driving voltage,hysteresis width and response time,are investigated.The reasons of electro-optical properties influenced by the concentrations of the materials are discussed.Through the proper material recipe,the electro-optical properties of polymer stabilized cholesteric LC film can be optimized. 相似文献

The cholesteric liquid crystal can be regarded as a multilayer that consists of many layer uniaxial thin films that exhibit optical rotation. For the convenient discussion of the polarization states of the transmitted wave through a cholesteric liquid crystal, a new 2×2 matrix is given, in which the matrix element is changed into the complex exponential. Here we discuss the treatment process of this method in detail and its role in the investigation of the polarization states. Using this method we easily study the polarization states of the transmitted wave. The calculated results show that the polarization states of wave will be changed when it propagates along the cholesteric liquid crystal. 相似文献

A dye-doped polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film was designed and fabricated,and random lasing action was studied.A mixture of laser dye,nematic liquid crystal,chiral dopant,and PVA was used to prepare the dye-doped polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film by means of microcapsules.Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that most liquid crystal droplets in the polymer matrix ranged from 30 μm to 40 μm,the size of the liquid crystal droplets was small.Under frequency doubled 532 nm Nd:YAG laser-pumped optical excitation,a plurality of discrete and sharp random laser radiation peaks could be measured in the range of 575–590 nm.The line-width of the lasing peak was 0.2 nm and the threshold of the random lasing was 9 m J.Under heating,the emission peaks of random lasing disappeared.By detecting the emission light spot energy distribution,the mechanism of radiation was found to be random lasing.The random lasing radiation mechanism was then analyzed and discussed.Experimental results indicated that the size of the liquid crystal droplets is the decisive factor that influences the lasing mechanism.The surface anchor role can be ignored when the size of the liquid crystal droplets in the polymer matrix is small,which is beneficial to form multiple scattering.The transmission path of photons is similar to that in a ring cavity,providing feedback to obtain random lasing output. 相似文献

The article is devoted to elaboration of the model of scattering polarization film like dual brightness enhancement film (DBEF). This model is used for computer design of backlighting system of liquid crystal display (LCD) where light polarization is important. The model elaboration required development of measurement methods and reconstruction of the parameters for the film polarization, development of the accurate computer model of the polarized light scattering on thin surface. The results of design of LCD backlight with polarization film are presented in the article as well. The interaction of linearly and circularly polarized beams with a nematic liquid crystal doped with light-absorbing dyes has
been studied by light-diffraction and microprojection methods. It has been found that there is a threshold for the emergence
of light-induced anisotropic structures, which, depending on the type of dye, can be axisymmetric or extended in a direction
determined by the light field. Possible mechanisms leading to the formation of the anisotropic structures are discussed.

We directly visualize the response and relaxation dynamics of bipolar nematic liquid crystal droplets to an applied electric field E. Despite strong planar anchoring, there is no critical field for switching. Instead, upon application of E, the surface region first reorients, followed by movement of the disclinations and the bipolar axis. After removing E, elastic forces restore the drop to its original state. The collective electro-optic properties of ordered hexagonal-close-packed monolayers of drops are probed by diffraction experiments confirming the proposed switching mechanism. 相似文献

While a suitable magnetic field is applied to a ferrofluids film, magnetic nanoparticles in the film would form chain-like structure. Because of the action of magnetic convergent force (MCF) and magnetic divergent force (MDF), the chains will move coordinately towards to the axis of the field, then do apart from the center. From geometric shadowing effect, variation in the intensity of light transmitted through ferrofluids film is in relation to the coordinate motion of the chains. And a radiate synchromotion of the chain groups is constructed equivalently for describing the relation between transmitted light's intensity varying and chains moving. From the motion equation of one chain group, the relation is illustrated qualitatively by computer simulation. The experimental results show that the field-induced variation of light transmitted through ferrofluids film is a nonlinear relaxation process with intrinsic noise, and are in agreement with the behavior simulated by using the model of coordinated chains motion (MCCM). 相似文献

深入研究了线双折射光栅中透射光偏振特性的演变过程。采用耦合模理论和琼斯矩阵分析了传输距离、双折射大小、入射起偏态等因素对透射光偏振特性的影响,并利用邦加球中描绘了偏振态的演变趋势。结果表明:光栅中的线双折射和传输距离会改变传输光的偏振态,偏振态的波长相关曲线会随传输距离和线双折射的增大而不断扩展,入射起偏态的不同并不改变偏振态的拓展趋势。同时,第一斯托克斯参量与偏振相关损耗在峰值波长点上存在对应关系,两者幅值均与线双折射呈单调递增关系,可应用于传感测量。 相似文献

We have used atomistic molecular-dynamics simulations to model the detailed molecular configuration of 5CB (4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl) molecules in the form of a nanoscopic liquid crystal droplet in a vacuum microgravity environment. We find the equilibrium state of droplets consisting of as few as 26 or 50 molecules to exhibit significant nematic ordering. The shape of the droplets is also anisotropic, but there is little angular correlation between the nematic director and the long axis of the droplet. Some tendency to micelle formation is observed in droplets of 50 molecules. 相似文献

birefringent thin film compensators to mitigate the problems. There are two fundamental sources of leakage of light in LCDs.
They are the leakage of light through a pair of ideal crossed polarizers, and the leakage of light due to elliptical state
of polarization after transmitting through the liquid crystal (LC) cell. The leakage of light in the dark state leads to poor
contrast ratios and color instability, particularly at large viewing angles. The paper then describes the employment of sixth-wave
