Zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are regarded as ideal candidates for next-generation energy storage equipment due to their high energy density, non-toxicity, high safety, and environmental friendliness. However, the slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics on the air cathode limit their efficiency and the development of highly efficient, low cost and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts is still challenging. Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) based bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts have been demonstrated as promising alternative catalysts due to the regular structure, tunable chemistry, high specific surface area, and simple and easy preparation of MOFs, and great progress has been made in this area. Herein, we summarize the latest research progress of MOF-based bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for ZABs, including pristine MOFs, derivatives of MOFs and MOF composites. The effects of the catalysts'' composites, morphologies, specific surface areas and active sites on catalytic performances are specifically addressed to reveal the underlying mechanisms for different catalytic activity of MOF based catalysts. Finally, the main challenges and prospects for developing advanced MOF-based bifunctional electrocatalysts are proposed.

Among the various options, rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have emerged as an appealing choice in green energy storage technology due to their higher energy density, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Regarding this fact, a spotlight is shaded on air electrode for constructing high-performance ZABs. Cobalt oxide-based electrocatalysts on the air electrode have gained significant attention due to their extraordinary features. Particularly, exploration and integration of bifunctional behavior for energy storage has remarkably promoted both ORR and OER to facilitate the overall performance of the battery. The plot of this review is forwarded towards in-depth analysis of the latest advancements in electrocatalysts that are based on cobalt oxide and possess bifunctional properties along with an introduction of the fundamental aspects of ZABs, Additionally, the topic entails an examination of the morphological variations and mechanistic details mentioning about the synthesis processes. Finally, a direction is provided for future research endeavors through addressing the challenges and prospects in the advancement of next-generation bifunctional electrocatalysts to empower high-performing ZABs with bifunctional cobalt oxide.  相似文献

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are regarded as one of the most promising candidates for a new generation of advanced energy conversion and storage devices, while the inferior activity and stability of air cathode electrocatalysts largely hinder the widespread application of ZABs. The extensive efforts for exploring and designing high active yet stable air cathode catalysts is,therefore, indispensable for the improvement of ZABs performance. Recently,carbon-encapsulated iron-based nanoparticles have been reported to exhibit excellent oxygen catalytic performance on account of their resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and aggregation under harsh conditions, and have been widely used as cathode materials for ZABs. As a result,we systematically summarize the applications of carbon-encapsulated transition metal iron-based materials as cathode catalysts for ZABs. In this review, the basic principle of ZABs and challenges faced by air cathode catalysts are firstly expounded. Then, the research progress of the carbon-encapsulated iron-based nanoparticles electrocatalysts (such as iron-based and its alloy, carbide, oxide and phosphide,et al.) are emphatically discussed and analyzed. Finally, the future development perspectives of carbon-encapsulated iron-based electrocatalysts in the applications of ZABs are put forward. © 2022, Science Press (China). Platinum (Pt) and iridium (Ir) catalysts are well known to strongly enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, respectively. Pt–Ir-based bimetallic compounds along with carbon-supported titanium oxides (C–TiO2) have been synthesized for the application as electrocatalysts in lithium oxygen batteries. Transition metal oxide-based bimetallic nanocomposites (Pt–Ir/C–TiO2) were prepared by an incipient wetness impregnation technique. The as-prepared electrocatalysts were composed of a well-dispersed homogenous alloy of nanoparticles as confirmed by X-ray diffraction patterns and Fourier transform scanning electron microscopy analyses. The electrochemical characterizations reveal that the Pt–Ir/C–TiO2 electrocatalysts were bifunctional with high activity for both ORR and OER. When applied as an air cathode catalyst in lithium-air batteries, the electrocatalyst improved the battery performance in terms of capacity, reversibility, and cycle life compared to that of cathodes without any catalysts.  相似文献

The lack of high‐efficient, low‐cost, and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts that act simultaneously for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is currently one of the major obstacles to commercializing the electrical rechargeability of zinc–air batteries. A nanocomposite CoO‐NiO‐NiCo bifunctional electrocatalyst supported by nitrogen‐doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (NCNT/CoO‐NiO‐NiCo) exhibits excellent activity and stability for the ORR/OER in alkaline media. More importantly, real air cathodes made from the bifunctional NCNT/CoO‐NiO‐NiCo catalysts further demonstrated superior performance to state‐of‐the‐art Pt/C or Pt/C+IrO2 catalysts in primary and rechargeable zinc–air batteries.  相似文献

To develop more ideal bifunctional heteroatom-doped carbon electrocatalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction(OER) for regenerative fuel cells and rechargeable metal–air batteries, herein, tobacco-derived N-containing ordered mesoporous carbon(N-OMC) electrocatalysts with different N species distributions are designed. Results indicate that the as-prepared N-OMC with more pyrrolic and pyridinic Ns exhibits much higher activities for the ORR and OER than N-OMC with more graphitic N in both acidic and alkaline media, suggesting that the increase of pyrrolic and pyridinic Ns favors the improvement of ORR and OER activities of the N-containing carbon catalysts, and showing a great potential for the designing of more effective, lower-cost ORR and OER bifunctional electrocatalysts for future regenerative fuel cells and rechargeable metal–air batteries.  相似文献

Metal–air batteries are promising candidates to provide green and sustainable energy sources with low cost and high energy density. However, the commercialization of metal–air batteries is mainly hampered by the expensive precious metal catalysts, which are necessarily used for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions within the air cathodes. Biomass waste, the earth-abundant renewable energy source, can play an intriguing role in generating high-performance and low-cost carbon-based electrocatalysts for air batteries. This mini review presents the latest advances on innovative processing strategies of diverse biomass waste sources into various carbon-based electrocatalysts, whose performance are comparable with or even can beat that of the noble metal catalysts. Furthermore, how the composition and structure of the biomass waste is related to the electrochemical performances of the resultant electrocatalysts for air batteries is discussed. This mini review offers the rational principles and strategies to upcycle biomass waste into value-added materials for energy storage and conversion application.  相似文献

Flexible rechargeable Zn-air batteries are considered as one of the most promising battery systems to drive flexible and wearable electronic devices owing to their high safety, high gravimetric energy density, low self-discharge and low cost. One of the key challenges is to develop air electrodes with high performance and high mechanical flexibility. This minireview discusses the recent progress in the design and fabrication of flexible air electrodes. It focuses on the latest innovations in bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts, mainly including carbon-based materials(e.g.,heteroatom-doped carbon,metal-nitrogen moieties doped carbon),metal oxides(e.g.,spinel oxides, perovskite oxides) and their composites. It aims to provide an insight into the structureproperty relationship of bifunctional catalysts. We also discuss the challenges and future perspectives.  相似文献

Herein, we successfully construct bifunctional electrocatalysts by synthesizing atomically dispersed Fe−Se atom pairs supported on N-doped carbon (Fe−Se/NC). The obtained Fe−Se/NC shows a noteworthy bifunctional oxygen catalytic performance with a low potential difference of 0.698 V, far superior to that of reported Fe-based single-atom catalysts. The theoretical calculations reveal that p-d orbital hybridization around the Fe−Se atom pairs leads to remarkably asymmetrical polarized charge distributions. Fe−Se/NC based solid-state rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs−Fe−Se/NC) present stable charge/discharge of 200 h (1090 cycles) at 20 mA cm−2 at 25 °C, which is 6.9 times of ZABs−Pt/C+Ir/C. At extremely low temperature of −40 °C, ZABs−Fe−Se/NC displays an ultra-robust cycling performance of 741 h (4041 cycles) at 1 mA cm−2, which is about 11.7 times of ZABs−Pt/C+Ir/C. More importantly, ZABs−Fe−Se/NC could be operated for 133 h (725 cycles) even at 5 mA cm−2 at −40 °C.  相似文献

Efficient reversible oxygen electrodes for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are vitally important for various energy conversion devices, such as regenerative fuel cells and metal–air batteries. However, realization of such electrodes is impeded by insufficient activity and instability of electrocatalysts for both water splitting and oxygen reduction. We report highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen electrodes comprising core–shell Co@Co3O4 nanoparticles embedded in CNT‐grafted N‐doped carbon‐polyhedra obtained by the pyrolysis of cobalt metal–organic framework (ZIF‐67) in a reductive H2 atmosphere and subsequent controlled oxidative calcination. The catalysts afford 0.85 V reversible overvoltage in 0.1 m KOH, surpassing Pt/C, IrO2, and RuO2 and thus ranking them among one of the best non‐precious‐metal electrocatalysts for reversible oxygen electrodes.

Developing efficient energy storage and conversion applications is vital to address fossil energy depletion and global warming. Li–O2 batteries are one of the most promising devices because of their ultra-high energy density. To overcome their practical difficulties including low specific capacities, high overpotentials, limited rate capability and poor cycle stability, an intensive search for highly efficient electrocatalysts has been performed. Recently, it has been reported that heterostructured catalysts exhibit significantly enhanced activities toward the oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, and their excellent performance is not only related to the catalyst materials themselves but also the special hetero-interfaces. Herein, an overview focused on the electrocatalytic functions of heterostructured catalysts for non-aqueous Li–O2 batteries is presented by summarizing recent research progress. Reduction mechanisms of Li–O2 batteries are first introduced, followed by a detailed discussion on the typical performance enhancement mechanisms of the heterostructured catalysts with different phases and heterointerfaces, and the various heterostructured catalysts applied in Li–O2 batteries are also intensively discussed. Finally, the existing problems and development perspectives on the heterostructure applications are presented.

The structure–function relationships between heterostructures and their catalytic properties were discussed in detail, and the challenges and improvement strategies for heterostructure based cathodes towards Li–O2 catalysis were also summarized.  相似文献

The high charge–discharge voltage gap is one of the main bottlenecks of zinc–air batteries (ZABs) because of the kinetically sluggish oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) on the oxygen electrode side. Thus, an efficient bifunctional catalyst for ORR and OER is highly desired. Herein, honeycomb-like MnCo2O4.5 spheres were used as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst. It was demonstrated that both ORR and OER catalytic activity are promoted by MnIV-induced oxygen vacancy defects and multiple active sites. Importantly, the multivalent ions present in the material and its defect structure endow stable pseudocapacitance within the inactive region of ORR and OER; as a result, a low charge–discharge voltage gap (0.43 V at 10 mA cm−2) was achieved when it was employed in a flexible hybrid Zn-based battery. This mechanism provides unprecedented and valuable insights for the development of next-generation metal–air batteries.  相似文献

Due to the energy crisis by the excessive consumption of fossil fuels, Zinc–air batteries (ZABs) with high theoretical energy density have attracted people‘s attention. The overall performance of ZABs is largely determined by the air cathode catalyst. Therefore, it is necessary to develop high-efficiency and low-cost bifunctional catalysts to replace noble metal catalysts to promote the development of ZABs. Among a variety of cathode catalysts, TMS has become a research hotspot in recent years because of its better electrical conductivity than metal phosphides and metal oxides. In this work, we focus on the means of improving the electrocatalytic performance of transition-metal sulfides (TMS) providing ideas for us to rationally design high-performance catalysts. Furthermore, the performance improvement law between catalyst performance and ZABs is also discussed in this work. Finally, some challenges and opportunities faced in the research of TMS electrocatalysis are briefly proposed, and strategies for improving the performance of ZABs are prospected.  相似文献

Single atom catalysts (SACs) with atomically dispersed transition metals on nitrogen-doped carbon supports have recently emerged as highly active non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), showing great application potential in Zn-air batteries. However, because of the complex structure-performance relationships of carbon-based SACs in the oxygen electrocatalytic reactions, the contribution of different metal atoms to the catalytic activity of SACs in Zn-air batteries still remains ambiguous. In this study, SACs with atomically dispersed transition metals on nitrogen-doped graphene sheets (M-N@Gs, M = Co, Fe and Ni), featured with similar physicochemical properties and M-N@C configurations, are obtained. By comparing the on-set potentials and the maximum current, we observed that the ORR activity is in the order of Co-N@G > Fe-N@G > Ni-N@G, while the OER activity is in the order of Co-N@G > Ni-N@G > Fe-N@G. The Zn-air batteries with Co-N@G as the air cathode catalysts outperform those with the Fe-N@G and Ni-N@G. This is due to the accelerated charge transfer between Co-N@C active sites and the oxygen-containing reactants. This study could improve our understanding of the design of more efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries at the atomic level.  相似文献

It is extremely desirable to explore high-efficient, affordable and robust oxygen electrocatalysts toward rechargeable Zn–air batteries (ZABs). A 3D porous nitrogen-doped graphene encapsulated metallic Ni3Fe alloy nanoparticles aerogel (Ni3Fe-GA1) was constructed through a facile hydrothermal assembly and calcination process. Benefiting from 3D porous configuration with great accessibility, high electrical conductivity, abundant active sites, optimal nitrogen content and strong electronic interactions at the Ni3Fe/N-doped graphene heterointerface, the obtained aerogel showed outstanding catalytic performance toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Specifically, it exhibited an overpotential of 239 mV to attain 10 mA cm−2 for OER, simultaneously providing a positive onset potential of 0.93 V within a half-wave potential of 0.8 V for ORR. Accordingly, when employed in the aqueous ZABs, Ni3Fe-GA1 achieved higher power density and superior reversibility than Pt/C−IrO2 catalyst, making it a potential candidate for rechargeable ZABs.  相似文献

The electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the vital process at the cathode of next-generation electrochemical storage and conversion technologies, such as metal–air batteries and fuel cells. Single-metal-atom and nitrogen co-doped carbonaceous electrocatalysts (M–N–C) have emerged as attractive alternatives to noble-metal platinum for catalyzing the kinetically sluggish ORR due to their high electrical conductivity, large surface area, and structural tunability at the atomic level, however, their application is limited by the low intrinsic activity of the metal–nitrogen coordination sites (M–Nx) and inferior site density. In this Perspective, we summarize the recent progress and milestones relating to the active site engineering of single atom carbonous electrocatalysts for enhancing the ORR activity. Particular emphasis is placed on the emerging strategies for regulating the electronic structure of the single metal site and populating the site density. In addition, challenges and perspectives are provided regarding the future development of single atom carbonous electrocatalysts for the ORR and their utilization in practical use.

This Perspective summarizes and highlights the recent progress and milestones relating to the active site engineering of single atom carbonous electrocatalysts for enhancing the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction activity.  相似文献

Due to their high energy density, great safety and eco-friendliness, zinc-air batteries (ZABs) attract much attention. During the process of charging and discharging, the two key processes viz. oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limit their efficiency. In general, the noble metal-based electrocatalysts (ORR: platinum (Pt); OER: iridium (IV) oxide [IrO2] and ruthenium oxide [RuO2]) have long been used. Nonetheless, these noble metal electrocatalysts also have their limitations owing to high cost and poor stability. As alternatives, polymers are found to be most promising on account of their tunable structure, uniform network, high surface morphology and strong durability. Polymers are capable catalysts. In this review, recent advances as well as insight into the architecture of covalent organic polymers (COPs), metal coordination polymers (MCPs) and pyrolysis-free polymers (PFPs) are duly outlined.  相似文献
