A polar electro-optic response is observed in droplets of an achiral nematic liquid crystal in coexistence with the isotropic phase. Between crossed polarizers each pancake-shaped droplet shows extinction brushes in the form of a centred cross aligned with the polarizer axes. An applied electric field E induces a rotation of the crosses about the field direction, with about half the droplets switching clockwise and the other half anticlockwise. The sense of rotation in each droplet changes when E is reversed. We propose that a twisted bipolar director structure is stabilized in the droplets by a relatively large splay elastic constant and tangential boundary conditions. The molecules twist along the diameter of the droplets, perpendicular to the applied field, which results in a linear rotation of the director by the inverse flexoelectric effect. Since the molecules are achiral, the handedness of the twist, and hence the sense of the switching, in any droplet is arbitrary.  相似文献

We prepared some achiral flexible liquid crystal oligomers possessing an octafluorobiphenyl unit and investigated their phase transition properties using polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All the compounds showed nematic phases. The trimer with even-numbered spacers was found to exhibit coexistence of the nematic regions and the chiral nematic regions with opposite twist senses of a sample contained in a homogeneous aligned cell during a cooling process, whilst that with odd-numbered spacers did not. We discuss how the even-numbered trimer produces the helical state.  相似文献

A new ferroelectric liquid crystal, 1-ethylpropyl (S)-2-[2-fluoro-4-(4′-decyloxybiphenylcarbonyloxy) benzoyloxy] propanoate, F, was synthesized and mixed with an achiral swallow-tailed material, 2-propylpentyl 4-(4′-nonyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy) benzoate,P, for the preparation of binary mixtures for the study. The binary mixtures gave a phase sequence SmA* -SmC* -SmX*. The electro-optic response of the mixtures in the ferroelectric SmC* phase was investigated. V-shaped switching was observed as the amount of the achiral swallow-tailed material became greater than 20 wt %. This result suggests that thresholdless, V-shaped switching in ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures can be achieved by mixing a ferroelectric liquid crystal with an achiral swallow-tailed compound.  相似文献

The elusive biaxial nematic liquid crystal phase was recently discovered in a family of substituted oxadiazoles. Our investigations of these materials show that the achiral biaxial nematic phase can segregate into chiral domains of opposite handedness, thereby demonstrating that the liquid-like nematic phase exhibits the properties of a conglomerate.  相似文献

A phenomenological free energy is used to describe the stable ordering of nematic liquid crystals confined to supramicron spherical cavities. In particular the effects of the saddle splay elastic constant, K24, on the equilibrium structures and phase diagram of droplets with homeotropic surface anchoring are discussed. Some structures are illustrated by the corresponding simulated polarization microscope textures. Possibilities for an experimental determination of the saddle-splay elastic constant and surface anchoring strength by studying the radial-axial structural transition in such droplets are analysed. It is shown that the K24 term in the elastic free energy stabilizes a deformed droplet structure even in the limit of the zero anchoring strength.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Herein, the polar anchoring energy coefficient (Aθ) of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) was examined for high-density polymer brushes via capacitance measurements. The Aθ is 10?4 J m?2 for the brushes of poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(ethyl methacrylate) and poly(styrene). The value decreases to 10?5 J m?2 for poly(n-butyl methacrylate) and poly(hexyl methacrylate) with lower glass transition temperatures. However, each polymer brush displays a constant Aθ value over a temperature range of ?15°C to 90°C, which is hardly affected by the graft density and brush thickness. At 25°C, Aθ is 10 times greater than the corresponding azimuthal anchoring energy coefficient (Aφ); therefore, NLCs on polymer brushes can be preferentially aligned along the in-plane component of the applied field.  相似文献

The ‘flexoelastic ratio’ is commonly used to characterise the electro-optic behaviour of chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) devices that exhibit flexoelectro-optic switching. There has been renewed interest in this electro-optic effect of late as new LC materials and mixtures have been developed that exhibit large tilt angles, Ø, of the optic axis (Ø ≥ 45°) whilst maintaining a fast response time (< 1 ms). In this study, we compare the different flexoelastic ratios that are obtained for fixed and variable-pitch chiral nematic LCs for materials with a tilt of the optic axis as large as Ø = ± 45°. We show that for large tilt angles of the optic axis the values for the two different flexoelastic ratios measurably diverge. Of the two ratios, we propose that for large tilt-angle mixtures it is more appropriate to use the flexoelastic ratio that is derived for the case when the pitch of the helix is constrained. In addition, a simple way of determining the ‘pitch-constrained’ flexoelastic ratio is presented that involves identifying the electric field amplitude at the point for which the transmission levels are the same for both positive and negative electric field polarities.  相似文献

The synthesis is reported of a series of polar nematic liquid crystals incorporating an alkoxyalkoxy chain attached in a terminal position to a molecular core consisting of two aromatic rings. The dependence of the mesomorphism and phase transition temperatures on the nature of this terminal chain was studied. The shape anisotropy of the core is increased by the presence of an additional 1,4-disubstituted phenyl unit in a number of p-terphenyls. A number of highly polar esters with a terminal methoxyethoxy chain have been prepared as dopants to lower the threshold voltage of LCDs. The presence of the methoxyethoxy chain leads to an increase in the molecular dipole moment, the dielectric anisotropy and the dielectric constant perpendicular to the molecular long axis. Several compounds with a four-unit diether central linkage were also prepared.  相似文献

The preparation and properties of cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal droplets encapsulated by the polymerizable lecithin 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)-sn-glyero-3-phosphocholine (DC8,9PC) are described. Under a wide variety of preparation conditions the droplets obtain a diameter of approximately 10 mum. These droplets are stable for periods of over one year at room temperature. Furthermore, they are stable upon temperature cycling between the nematic and isotropic phases and between the smectic A to nematic to isotropic phase transitions.  相似文献

An achiral swallow-tailed material, 2-propylpentyl 4-(4′-decyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)benzoate, p, showing SmA and SmCalt phases was prepared for mixing (by weight percentage) with an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (S)-MHPOBC, m, for the study. The binary mixture p/15/m85 using (S)-MHPOBC (85%) as a host doped with achiral material (15%) resulted in a phase sequence SmA-SmC*-SmC*A. The electro-optic response of this mixture in the ferroelectric SmC* phase displayed V-shaped switching, while that in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase displayed a double hysteresis switching. The mixture p85/m15 possessed SmA* and SmC*A phases; V-shaped switching was found in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase of this mixture. These optical phenomena implied that a binary mixture containing a larger amount of achiral swallow-tailed material and/or possessing relatively lower polarization favours the occurrence of V-shaped switching in the antiferroelectric phase. The results of this work also suggested that thresholdless V-shaped switching in chiral smectic liquid crystals can be achieved by mixing an achiral swallow-tailed material with an antiferroelectric liquid crystal.  相似文献

Elliptic droplets of nematic liquid crystal dispersed in a fluid organic monomer were obtained by phase separation from an isotropic mixture consisting of an organic monomer and a nematic liquid crystal contained in a poly(ethylene terephthalate) cell with inner surfaces treated with rubbed polyimide. The elliptic shape is a consequence of the constraint upon droplet growth along the direction perpendicular to the cell surfaces owing to the small thickness. Then, the resulting droplets will have a contact area with the inner surfaces of the cell treated with polyimide, which will impart a planar orientation on the liquid crystal in the droplet. By means of an optical microscope, using a simple pin hole of 5 μ m, we have selected single droplets for a series of samples having different contact areas. By polarized infrared spectroscopy we have also studied the liquid crystal orientation in selected areas of the droplets. We then report the dependence of the order parameter of the liquid crystal on different contact areas with the alignment surface of the cell. The good degree of planar alignment of the liquid crystal in the elliptic droplets allows the use of such a technique for realizing electro-optical films operating in the reverse mode. We report the electro-optical transmission of reverse mode films with different sizes of elliptic droplet.  相似文献

Abstract

We report observations on nematic droplets of a dual-frequency addressable nematic mixture using polarization microscopy. When low frequency (f = 100 Hz) electric fields are applied, the dielectric anisotropy is positive and the droplets show the usual behaviour, i.e. dark polarization rings which move outward with increasing field strength. When high frequency (f = 50 kHz) fields are applied, however, the dielectric anisotropy is negative and the dark polarization rings move inward with increasing field strength. The appearance of the droplets in transmission is compared to computer-simulated pictures using a simple model which describes the change of the director field within a weak field limit.  相似文献

A new reflective liquid crystal display, the sub-twisted nematic LCD (SBTN), is presented. The SBTN, specifically designed for its twist angle, the product of cell thickness and birefringence, the direction of its only polarizer, etc. exhibits good electro-optic performance. Brightness, contrast, colour dispersion and multiplexing ability, etc. were theoretically and experimentally examined. The prototype showed high brightness, little dispersion, good mutliplexing ability, good viewing angle and response behaviour. It also offers good manufacturing tolerance and low production cost.  相似文献

The bulk phase liquid crystalline behaviour of a cyclic siloxane with a pentamethylcyclosiloxane core and biphenyl-4-allyloxybenzoate mesogens (BCS) was studied using molecular dynamics (MD) and wide angle X-ray analysis. This material exhibits partial crystallinity at room temperature and liquid crystalline behaviour above 120° C. For the MD simulations an ensemble of 27 molecules with 135 mesogenic units was simulated and a molecular mechanics force field was used to model the structural anisotropy of the siloxane molecules. Simulations were carried out both at room temperature and at an elevated temperature (425 K). Room temperature simulations showed that, contrary to our initial assumptions, the low energy molecular conformations were not cylindrical but splayed in shape. During the simulation a smectic-like, tilted layer structure was found to evolve for the cluster when full atom potentials were used, while no such development was observed when electrostatic interactions were neglected. The presence of a tilted layered structure was also suggested by the X-ray data. These results indicate that long range electrostatic interactions are significant for the molecular system under study. In order to calculate the orientational order parameter, the orientation of the molecular axis had to be determined. This was achieved by describing the mesogen shapes to be ellipsoidal and defining the principal axis of the ellipsoids to be the molecular directors. By sampling over 200 ps of simulation at 425 K, the time averaged order parameter (S) was calculated. The calculated S of 0.36 was comparable to the value of 0.4-0.45 found from the experimental data. Apart from providing insight into the relative importance of the various competing forces in the formation of the liquid crystalline phase, these simulations are also expected to be useful in predicting the mesophase behaviour of liquid crystalline systems.  相似文献

By mixing the achiral liquid crystal HOAB, exhibiting a nematic (N)-smectic-C (SmC) mesophase sequence, with the chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) (S,S)-M7BBM7, forming the antiferroelectric SmC(a)(*) phase, at least seven different mesophases have been induced which neither component forms on its own: a twist-grain-boundary (TGB(*)) phase, two or three blue phases, the untilted SmA(*) phase, as well as all three chiral smectic-C-type "subphases," SmC(alpha)(*), SmC(beta)(*), and SmC(gamma)(*). The nature of the induced phases and the transitions between them were determined by means of optical and electro-optical investigations, dielectric spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The induced phases can to a large extent be understood as a result of frustration, TGB(*) at the border between nematic and smectic, the subphases between syn and anticlinic tilted smectic organization. X ray scattering experiments reveal that the smectic layer spacing as well as the degree of smectic order is relatively constant in the whole mixture composition range in which AFLC behavior prevails, whereas both these parameters rapidly decrease as the amount of HOAB is increased to such an extent that no other smectic-C-type phase than SmC/SmC(*) exists. By tailoring the composition we are able to produce liquid crystal mixtures exhibiting unusual phase sequences, e.g., with a direct isotropic-SmC(a)(*) transition or a temperature range of the SmC(beta)(*) subphase of about 50 K.  相似文献
