Finite-dimensional lattice-subspaces of

Let be linearly independent positive functions in , let be the vector subspace generated by the and let denote the curve of determined by the function , where . We establish that is a vector lattice under the induced ordering from if and only if there exists a convex polygon of with vertices containing the curve and having its vertices in the closure of the range of . We also present an algorithm which determines whether or not is a vector lattice and in case is a vector lattice it constructs a positive basis of . The results are also shown to be valid for general normed vector lattices.

     

Regularity theory and traces of -harmonic functions

In this paper we discuss two different topics concerning -
harmonic functions. These are weak solutions of the partial differential equation

where for some fixed , the function is bounded and for a.e. . First, we present a new approach to the regularity of -harmonic functions for . Secondly, we establish results on the existence of nontangential limits for -harmonic functions in the Sobolev space , for some , where is the unit ball in . Here is allowed to be different from .

     

A Concordance Extension Theorem

Let be a manifold approximate fibration between closed manifolds, where , and let be the mapping cylinder of . In this paper it is shown that if is any concordance on , then there exists a concordance such that and . As an application, if and are closed manifolds where is a locally flat submanifold of and and , then a concordance extends to a concordance on such that . This uses the fact that under these hypotheses there exists a manifold approximate fibration , where is a closed -manifold, such that the mapping cylinder is homeomorphic to a closed neighborhood of in by a homeomorphism which is the identity on .

     

Lévy group action and invariant measures on

For let be defined by . We investigate permutations of , which satisfy as with for (i.e. is in the Lévy group , or for in the subspace of Cesàro-summable sequences. Our main interest are -invariant means on or equivalently -invariant probability measures on . We show that the adjoint of maps measures supported in onto a weak*-dense subset of the space of -invariant measures. We investigate the dynamical system and show that the support set of invariant measures on is the closure of the set of almost periodic points and the set of non-topologically transitive points in . Finally we consider measures which are invariant under .

     

Package deal theorems and splitting orders in dimension 1

Let be a module-finite algebra over a commutative noetherian ring of Krull dimension 1. We determine when a collection of finitely generated modules over the localizations , at maximal ideals of , is the family of all localizations of a finitely generated -module . When is semilocal we also determine which finitely generated modules over the -adic completion of are completions of finitely generated -modules.

If is an -order in a semisimple artinian ring, but not contained in a maximal such order, several of the basic tools of integral representation theory behave differently than in the classical situation. The theme of this paper is to develop ways of dealing with this, as in the case of localizations and completions mentioned above. In addition, we introduce a type of order called a ``splitting order' of that can replace maximal orders in many situations in which maximal orders do not exist.

     

The dynamical properties of Penrose tilings

The set of Penrose tilings, when provided with a natural compact metric topology, becomes a strictly ergodic dynamical system under the action of by translation. We show that this action is an almost 1:1 extension of a minimal action by rotations on , i.e., it is an generalization of a Sturmian dynamical system. We also show that the inflation mapping is an almost 1:1 extension of a hyperbolic automorphism on . The local topological structure of the set of Penrose tilings is described, and some generalizations are discussed.

     

Uniform harmonic approximation of bounded functions

Let be an open set in and be a relatively closed subset of . We characterize those pairs which have the following property: every function which is bounded and continuous on and harmonic on can be uniformly approximated by functions harmonic on . Several related results concerning both harmonic and superharmonic approximation are also established.

     

Properties of extremal functions for some nonlinear functionals on Dirichlet spaces

Let be the set of holomorphic functions on the unit disc with and Dirichlet integral not exceeding one, and let be the set of complex-valued harmonic functions on the unit disc with and Dirichlet integral not exceeding one. For a (semi)continuous function , define the nonlinear functional on or by . We study the existence and regularity of extremal functions for these functionals, as well as the weak semicontinuity properties of the functionals. We also state a number of open problems.

     

New results in the perturbation theory of maximal monotone and -accretive operators in Banach spaces

Let be a real Banach space and a bounded, open and convex subset of The solvability of the fixed point problem in is considered, where is a possibly discontinuous -dissipative operator and is completely continuous. It is assumed that is uniformly convex, and A result of Browder, concerning single-valued operators that are either uniformly continuous or continuous with uniformly convex, is extended to the present case. Browder's method cannot be applied in this setting, even in the single-valued case, because there is no class of permissible homeomorphisms. Optimal natural dualities. II: General theory

A general theory of optimal natural dualities is presented, built on the test algebra technique introduced in an earlier paper. Given that a set of finitary algebraic relations yields a duality on a class of algebras , those subsets of which yield optimal dualities are characterised. Further, the manner in which the relations in are constructed from those in is revealed in the important special case that generates a congruence-distributive variety and is such that each of its subalgebras is subdirectly irreducible. These results are obtained by studying a certain algebraic closure operator, called entailment, definable on any set of algebraic relations on . Applied, by way of illustration, to the variety of Kleene algebras and to the proper subvarieties of pseudocomplemented distributive lattices, the theory improves upon and illuminates previous results.

     

On the group of homotopy equivalences of a manifold

We consider the group of homotopy equivalences of a simply connected manifold which is part of the fundamental extension of groups due to Barcus-Barratt. We show that the kernel of this extension is always a finite group and we compute this kernel for various examples. This leads to computations of the group for special manifolds , for example if is a connected sum of products of spheres. In particular the group is determined completely. Also the connection of with the group of isotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of is studied.

     

Invertibility preserving linear maps on

For Banach spaces and , we show that every unital bijective invertibility preserving linear map between and is a Jordan isomorphism. The same conclusion holds for maps between and .

     

On quadratic forms of height two and a theorem of Wadsworth

Let and be anisotropic quadratic forms over a field of characteristic not . Their function fields and are said to be equivalent (over ) if and are isotropic. We consider the case where and is divisible by an -fold Pfister form. We determine those forms for which becomes isotropic over if , and provide partial results for . These results imply that if and are equivalent and , then is similar to over . This together with already known results yields that if is of height and degree or , and if , then and are equivalent iff and are isomorphic over .

Our proof is based on earlier results and the notion, discussed in this paper, of Shalika germs for certain Kloosterman integrals.

     

Cesàro Summability of Two-dimensional Walsh-Fourier Series

We introduce p-quasi-local operators and the two-dimensional
dyadic Hardy spaces defined by the dyadic squares. It is proved that, if a sublinear operator is p-quasi-local and bounded from to , then it is also bounded from to . As an application it is shown that the maximal operator of the Cesàro means of a martingale is bounded from to and is of weak type (1,1) provided that the supremum in the maximal operator is taken over a positive cone. So we obtain the dyadic analogue of a summability result with respect to two-dimensional trigonometric Fourier series due to Marcinkievicz and Zygmund; more exactly, the Cesàro means of a function converge a.e. to the function in question, provided again that the limit is taken over a positive cone. Finally, it is verified that if we take the supremum in a cone, but for two-powers, only, then the maximal operator of the Cesàro means is bounded from to for every .

     

Abstract functions with continuous differences and Namioka spaces

Let be a semigroup and a topological space. Let be an Abelian topological group. The right differences of a function are defined by for . Let be continuous at the identity of for all in a neighbourhood of . We give conditions on or range under which is continuous for any topological space . We also seek conditions on under which we conclude that is continuous at for arbitrary . This led us to introduce new classes of semigroups containing all complete metric and locally countably compact quasitopological groups. In this paper we study these classes and explore their relation with Namioka spaces.
