Transient-evoked stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs), recorded using a nonlinear differential technique, and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured in 17 normal-hearing and 10 hearing-impaired subjects using pairs of tone pips (pp), gated tones (gg), and for DPOAEs, continuous and gated tones (cg). Temporal envelopes of stimulus and OAE waveforms were obtained by narrow-band filtering at the stimulus or DP frequency. Mean SFOAE latencies in normal ears at 2.7 and 4.0 kHz decreased with increasing stimulus level and were larger at 4.0 kHz than latencies in impaired ears. Equivalent auditory filter bandwidths were calculated as a function of stimulus level from SFOAE latencies by assuming that cochlear transmission is minimum phase. DPOAE latencies varied less with level than SFOAE latencies. The ppDPOAEs often had two (or more) peaks separated in time with latencies consistent with model predictions for distortion and reflection components. Changes in ppDPOAE latency with level were sometimes explained by a shift in relative amplitudes of distortion and reflection components. The pp SFOAE SPL within the main spectral lobe of the pip stimulus was higher for normal ears in the higher-frequency half of the pip than the lower-frequency half, which is likely an effect of basilar membrane two-tone suppression. 相似文献

Click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) were previously shown to be significantly less strong in homosexual and bisexual females than in heterosexual females. Here it is reported that the spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) of those same 60 homosexual and bisexual females were less numerous and weaker than those in 57 heterosexual females. That is, the SOAEs of the homosexual and bisexual females were intermediate to those of heterosexual females and heterosexual males. The SOAE and CEOAE data both suggest that the cochleas of homosexual and bisexual females have been partially masculinized, possibly as part of some prenatal processes that also masculinized whatever brain structures are responsible for sexual orientation. For males of all sexual orientation, the SOAEs were less numerous and weaker than for the females, and there were no significant differences among the 56 heterosexual, 51 homosexual, and 11 bisexual males. All subjects passed a hearing screening test. When all SOAEs above 3000 Hz were excluded (as a control against incipient, undetected hearing loss) the same results were obtained as with the full range of data (550-9000 Hz). The differential use of oral contraceptives by the heterosexual and nonheterosexual females also could not explain the differences in their OAEs. 相似文献

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are used widely in humans to assess cochlear function. It is well known that 2f1-f2 DPOAE amplitude increases as the f2/f1 ratio increases from 1.0 to about 1.20, and then decreases as the f2/f1 ratio increases above 1.20, showing an amplitude ratio function, which is thought to be related to cochlear filtering properties. Different lower sideband DPOAEs are believed to show the same amplitude ratio functions as the 2f1-f2 DPOAE, with a magnitude peak situated at a constant DPOAE frequency relative to f2. More recently, several studies have suggested the involvement of a DPOAE component coming from its own distortion product place as well as the DPOAE component coming from the f2 place. To investigate DPOAE generation sites and the importance of the DPOAE frequency place, amplitude ratio functions of 2f1-f2, 3f1-2f2, 4f1-3f2 and 2f2-f1, 3f2-2f1, 4f2-3f1 DPOAE components have been systematically studied in 18 normally hearing subjects, using an f2 fixed, f1 sweep method, and an f1 fixed, f2 sweep method, at ten different f2 frequencies. Results show a dependency of the distortion magnitude peak on f2 frequency for each lower sideband DPOAE, and a small frequency shift of the distortion peak for the high order lower sideband DPOAE components. Strong correlation between the different lower sideband DPOAE amplitude were obtained, whether they were recorded with the same f1 (and a different f2) or with the same f2 (and a different f1), suggesting that lower side-band DPOAE amplitude does not depend on small variations in the f2 frequency. Moreover, correlations between DPOAE amplitude and tone-burst evoked otoacoustic emissions (TBOAEs) are highly significant for TBOAEs centered at the f2 frequency and at 1/2 octave below the f2 frequency, suggesting some degree of importance of the cochlear status at frequencies below f2 in DPOAE amplitude. Subjects presenting spontaneous otoacoustic emissions showed a greater lower sideband DPOAE amplitude recorded for low f2/f1 ratios, and a distortion magnitude peak shifted towards higher frequencies. The best correlation between upper sideband DPOAE amplitude and lower sideband DPOAE amplitude occurred for lower sideband DPOAEs generated by an f2 frequency 1/2 octave to 1 octave below the primaries used to generate upper sideband DPOAEs, suggesting a site of generation basal to f2 for the upper sideband DPOAEs. Correlations between TBOAE amplitude and upper sideband DPOAE amplitude agreed with a site of upper sideband DPOAE generation basal to f2, and which would move with the DPOAE frequency itself. 相似文献

This study examined the time course of cochlear suppression using a tone-burst suppressor to measure decrement of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). Seven normal-hearing subjects with ages ranging from 19 to 28 yr participated in the study. Each subject had audiometric thresholds ≤ 15 dB HL [re ANSI (2004) Specifications for Audiometers] for standard octave and inter-octave frequencies from 0.25 to 8 kHz. DPOAEs were elicited by primary tones with f(2)?= 4.0 kHz and f(1)?= 3.333 kHz (f(2)/f(1)?= 1.2). For the f(2), L(2) combination, suppression was measured for three suppressor frequencies: One suppressor below f(2) (3.834 kHz) and two above f(2) (4.166 and 4.282 kHz) at three levels (55, 60, and 65 dB SPL). DPOAE decrement as a function of L(3) for the tone-burst suppressor was similar to decrements obtained with longer duration suppressors. Onset- and setoff- latencies were ≤ 4 ms, in agreement with previous physiological findings in auditory-nerve fiber studies that suggest suppression results from a nearly instantaneous compression of the waveform. Persistence of suppression was absent for the below-frequency suppressor (f(3)?= 3.834 kHz) and was ≤ 3 ms for the two above-frequency suppressors (f(3)?= 4.166 and 4.282 kHz). 相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine the extent to which the variability seen in distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), among ears with normal hearing, could be accounted for. Several factors were selected for investigation, including behavioral threshold, differences in middle-ear transmission characteristics either in the forward or the reverse direction, and differences in contributions from the distortion and reflection sources. These variables were assessed after optimizing stimulus parameters for individual ears at each frequency. A multiple-linear regression was performed to identify whether the selected variables, either individually or in combination, explained significant portions of variability in DPOAE responses. Behavioral threshold at the f(2) frequency and behavioral threshold squared at that same frequency explained the largest amount of variability in DPOAE level, compared to the other variables. The combined model explained a small, but significant, amount of variance in DPOAE level at five frequencies. A large amount of residual variability remained, even at frequencies where the model accounted for significant amounts of variance. 相似文献

The prevalence of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) was measured in a group of 100 neonates and in a group of 50 normal-hearing young adults. The prevalence of SOAEs in the adult group (0.62) is at the high end of the range of prevalences reported in other surveys of adult SOAEs based on measurements using similar microphones. The prevalence of SOAEs in neonates (0.64) is not significantly different from that in adults. The various tendencies that have been found to be significant in the pooled results of other surveys are also evident in our adult group: more SOAEs in right ears, a higher prevalence of SOAEs in females, and a dependence between ears for the occurrence of SOAEs. The above-mentioned tendencies are also significant in the infant data. The major differences between the infant and adult results are the predominant SOAE frequency range and the average levels of SOAEs. The majority of adult SOAEs are between 1.0 and 2.0 kHz, whereas the majority of neonatal SOAEs are between 2.5 and 5.0 kHz. The average SOAE level is -2.6 dB SPL for adults and 8.5 dB SPL for infants. 相似文献

Amplitude and frequency fluctuations of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions have been studied. Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions were recorded from eight human ears and two frog ears (Rana esculenta). Record length typically was 80 s. For a recorded emission signal, the amplitude signal A(t) (average A0) and time intervals T(ti) between successive positive-going zero crossings (i counts zero crossings) were determined. Emission amplitude and period both showed small fluctuations: delta Arms/A0 ranged from 0.7 X 10(-2) to 6.3 X 10(-2) for human emissions and was 24 X 10(-2) for both frog emissions; delta Trms ranged from 1.4 to 6.9 X 10(-7) s for human emission and was 50.0 and 55.0 X 10(-7) s for the two frog emissions. There was a positive correlation between delta Arms/A0 and delta Trms as determined for different emissions (R = 0.9). Spectra of A(t) and T(ti) revealed that amplitude and period were slowly fluctuating functions: cutoff frequency delta f delta A of the amplitude spectrum ranged from 3 to 18 Hz; delta f delta T ranged from 7 to 32 Hz. Results have been compared to amplitude and frequency fluctuations of a second-order oscillator, that interacts with a noise source. It has been concluded that an oscillator with linear stiffness (for example a Van der Pol oscillator) driven by white Gaussian noise, cannot account for all experimental results. Other possible oscillators (e.g., nonlinear stiffness) and noise sources (e.g., narrow-band noise), that may account for the observed phenomena, are discussed. 相似文献

Mobile phones have become very commonly used worldwide within a short period of time. To date there is only limited knowledge about interaction between electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by mobile phones and the auditory function. Moreover, there is widespread concern that there may be potential for harm. The aim of this study was to assess potential subtle changes in cochlear function by measuring the temporal and spectral fine structure of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) in normal hearing subjects after exposure to EMFs emitted by Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) mobile phones. TEOAEs were recorded in 27 healthy young adults before and after 10 min of real or sham exposure in a double-blind design. TEOAE data were analyzed both globally (broadband analysis) and using the Wavelet Transform (analysis of the time-frequency fine structure). The broadband analysis revealed no significant effect on TEOAEs related to exposure, confirming results of previous studies; in addition, no significant change was detected in the analysis of the elementary wavelet components, suggesting that the temporal and spectral fine structure of TEOAEs is not affected by 10 min exposure to low-intensity EMFs emitted by GSM mobile phones. 相似文献

Low-frequency modulation of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) was measured from the human ears. In the frequency domain, increasing the bias tone level resulted in a suppression of the cubic difference tone (CDT) and an increase in the magnitudes of the modulation sidebands. Higher-frequency bias tones were more efficient in producing the suppression and modulation. Quasi-static modulation patterns were derived from measuring the CDT amplitude at the peaks and troughs of bias tones with various amplitudes. The asymmetric bell-shaped pattern resembled the absolute value of the third derivative of a nonlinear cochlear transducer function. Temporal modulation patterns were obtained from inverse FFT of the spectral contents around the DPOAE. The period modulation pattern, averaged over multiple bias tone cycles, showed two CDT peaks each correlated with the zero-crossings of the bias tone. The typical period modulation pattern varied and the two CDT peaks emerged with the reduction in bias tone level. The present study replicated the previous experimental results in gerbils. This noninvasive technique is capable of revealing the static position and dynamic motion of the cochlear partition. Moreover, the results of the present study suggest that this technique could potentially be applied in the differential diagnosis of cochlear pathologies. 相似文献

A distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) suppression tuning curve (STC) shows the minimum level of suppressor tone that is required to reduce DPOAE level by a fixed amount, as a function of suppressor frequency. Several years ago, Mills [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 103, 507-523 (1998)] derived, theoretically, an approximately linear relationship between the tip-to-tail suppressor level difference on a DPOAE STC, and the gain of the cochlear amplifier, defined as the maximum increase in the active over the passive basilar membrane (BM) response. In this paper, preliminary data from adult human subjects are presented that establish a correlation between this tip-to-tail DPOAE STC difference and the threshold of hearing, the latter measured at the frequency of the f2 primary tone. Assuming that both suppression and the DPOAE are by-products of active, nonlinear BM dynamics, the above result suggests that threshold elevation in mild levels of hearing loss may be attributed, in part, to a reduction of cochlear amplifier gain, which is detectable with the suppression paradigm. 相似文献

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) evoked by broadband clicks and by single tones are widely regarded as originating via different mechanisms within the cochlea. Whereas the properties of stimulus-frequency OAEs (SFOAEs) evoked by tones are consistent with an origin via linear mechanisms involving coherent wave scattering by preexisting perturbations in the mechanics, OAEs evoked by broadband clicks (CEOAEs) have been suggested to originate via nonlinear interactions among the different frequency components of the stimulus (e.g., intermodulation distortion). The experiments reported here test for bandwidth-dependent differences in mechanisms of OAE generation. Click-evoked and stimulus-frequency OAE input/output transfer functions were obtained and compared as a function of stimulus frequency and intensity. At low and moderate intensities human CEOAE and SFOAE transfer functions are nearly identical. When stimulus intensity is measured in "bandwidth-compensated" sound-pressure level (cSPL), CEOAE and SFOAE transfer functions have equivalent growth functions at fixed frequency and equivalent spectral characteristics at fixed intensity. This equivalence suggests that CEOAEs and SFOAEs are generated by the same mechanism. Although CEOAEs and SFOAEs are known by different names because of the different stimuli used to evoke them, the two OAE "types" are evidently best understood as members of the same emission family. 相似文献

Experimental measurements of the latency of transient evoked otoacoustic emission and auditory brainstem responses are compared, to discriminate between different cochlear models for the backward acoustic propagation of otoacoustic emissions. In most transmission-line cochlear models otoacoustic emissions propagate towards the base as a slow transverse traveling wave, whereas other models assume fast backward propagation via longitudinal compression waves in the fluid. Recently, sensitive measurements of the basilar membrane motion have cast serious doubts on the existence of slow backward traveling waves associated with distortion product otoacoustic emissions [He et al., Hear. Res. 228, 112-122 (2007)]. On the other hand, recent analyses of "Allen-Fahey" experiments suggest instead that the slow mechanism transports most of the otoacoustic energy [Shera et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 122, 1564-1575 (2007)]. The two models can also be discriminated by comparing accurate estimates of the otoacoustic emission latency and of the auditory brainstem response latency. In this study, this comparison is done using human data, partly original, and partly from the literature. The results are inconsistent with fast otoacoustic propagation, and suggest that slow traveling waves on the basilar membrane are indeed the main mechanism for the backward propagation of the otoacoustic energy. 相似文献

Primary and secondary sources combine to produce the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measured in the ear canals of humans. DPOAEs were obtained in nine normal-hearing subjects using a fixed-f2 paradigm in which f1 was varied. The f2 was 2 or 4 kHz, and absolute and relative primary levels were varied. Data were obtained with and without a third tone (f3) placed 15.6 Hz below 2f1-f2. The level of f3 was varied in order to suppress the stimulus frequency otoacoustic emission (SFOAE) coming from the 2f1-f2 place. These data were converted from the complex frequency domain into an equivalent time representation using an inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). IFFTs of unsuppressed DPOAE data were characterized by two or more peaks. Relative amplitudes of these peaks depended on overall primary level and on primary-level differences. The suppressor eliminated later peaks, but early peaks remained relatively unaltered. Results are interpreted to mean that the DPOAE measured in humans includes components from the f2 place (intermodulation distortion) and DP place (in the form of a SFOAE). These findings build on previous work by providing evidence that multiple peaks in the IFFT are due to a secondary source at the DP place. 相似文献

When a two-tone stimulus is presented to the ear, so-called distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are evoked. Adding an interference tone (IT) to these two DPOAE-evoking primaries affects normal DPOAE generation. The "effectiveness" of interference depends on the frequency of the IT in relation to the primary frequencies and this provides clues about the locus of emission generation within the inner ear. Here results are presented on the effects of ITs on DPOAEs thought to originate from the basilar papilla (BP) of a frog species. It is found that the IT always resulted in a reduction of the recorded DPOAE amplitude: DPOAE enhancement was not observed. Furthermore, iso-suppression curves (ISCs) exhibited two relative minima suggesting that the DPOAEs arise at different loci in the inner ear. These minima occurred at fixed frequencies, which coincided with those primary frequencies that resulted in maxima in DPOAE audiograms. The occurrence of two minima suggests that DPOAEs, which are presumed to originate exclusively from the BP, partially arise from the amphibian papilla as well. Finally, the finding that the minima in the ISCs are independent of the primary or DPOAE frequencies provides support for the notion that the BP functions as a single auditory filter. 相似文献

The reliability of distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measurements and their relation to loudness measurements was examined in 16 normal-hearing subjects and 58 subjects with hearing loss. The level of the distortion product (L(d)) was compared across two sessions and resulted in correlations that exceeded 0.90. The reliability of DPOAEs was less when parameters from nonlinear fits to the input/output (I/O) functions were compared across visits. Next, the relationship between DPOAE I/O parameters and the slope of the low-level portion of the categorical loudness scaling (CLS) function (soft slope) was assessed. Correlations of 0.65, 0.74, and 0.81 at 1, 2, and 4 kHz were observed between CLS soft slope and combined DPOAE parameters. Behavioral threshold had correlations of 0.82, 0.83, and 0.88 at 1, 2, and 4 kHz with CLS soft slope. Combining DPOAEs and behavioral threshold provided little additional information. Lastly, a multivariate approach utilizing the entire DPOAE I/O function was used to predict the CLS rating for each input level (dB SPL). Standard error of the estimate when using this method ranged from 2.4 to 3.0 categorical units (CU), suggesting that DPOAE I/O functions can predict CLS measures within the CU step size used in this study (5). 相似文献

Suppression tuning curves (STCs) for spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) were longitudinally obtained in seven infants (at 3 weeks, 2 months, and 3, 4, or 6 months of age) and in five adults. Excellent reproducibility was obtained for adult STCs. Reproducibility for infant STCs was poorer, but the curves at each age resemble those of adults both qualitatively and quantitatively as measured by slopes of the lower and upper segments of the STCs and by Q10's. Evidence from two subjects suggests that developmental changes in the fine tuning of the system may occur postnatally. Results are discussed with respect to the development of cochlear frequency selectivity. 相似文献

In many biological systems, information is transferred by hormonal ligands, and it is assumed that these hormonal signals encode developmental and regulatory programs in mammalian organisms. In contrast to the dogma of endocrine homeostasis, it could be shown that the biological information in hormonal networks is not only present as a constant hormone concentration in the circulation pool. Recently, it has become apparent that hormone pulses contribute to this hormonal pool, which modulates the responsiveness of receptors within the cell membrane by regulation of the receptor synthesis, movement within the membrane layer, coupling to signal transduction proteins and internalization. Phase space analysis of dynamic parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion allowed the definition of a (in comparison to normal subjects) relatively quiet "low dynamic" secretory pattern in osteoporosis, and a "high dynamic" state in hyperparathyroidism. We now investigate whether this pulsatile secretion of PTH in healthy men exhibits characteristics of nonlinear determinism. Our findings suggest that this is conceivable, although on the basis of presently available data and techniques, no proof can be established. Nevertheless, pulsatile secretion of PTH might be a first example of nonlinear deterministic dynamics in an apparently irregular hormonal rhythm in human physiology. The longitudinal electronic spin relaxation time of Cs atoms optically polarized in superfluid helium (He II, 1.5 K) has been measured with special care to cope with a serious decrease in the number of Cs atoms in the observation region. This decrease, mainly caused by helium convection in introducing the atoms into He II by laser sputtering, was significantly reduced using a new atom implantation method. Combined with a careful correction for the number of atoms, we have determined the relaxation time to be 2.24(19) s or longer, roughly twice as long as that in solid He. 相似文献

Latency of auditory brain-stem responses and otoacoustic emissions using tone-burst stimuli 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

A comparison of the latency of auditory brain-stem responses (ABR) and evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE) has led to an interpretation for the travel of transients in the peripheral auditory system that is consistent with both sets of data. The "cochlear echo" theory for the origin of the EOAE indicates that the latency of a particular frequency component back to the ear canal should be twice the forward latency of its characteristic place in the cochlea. The latency of wave V of the ABR to tone-burst stimuli can be described as the sum of two components: (1) a component that varies with intensity and frequency in an orderly and predictable manner and (2) a component that is independent of both intensity and frequency. Because the EOAE data can be predicted by taking twice the value of component (1) of the ABR latency, this component is interpreted to be due to mechanical travel through the cochlea. A consequence of this interpretation is that the remaining neural component of the ABR latency must be relatively independent of frequency and intensity. 相似文献
