A method for the determination of neutron spectra in a bubble chamber experiment is developed. Double differential cross sections for inclusive neutron and lambda production are presented. The n/Λ particle ratios are determined as functions of x and pT; at pT = 0 GeV/c they are compatible with the ratios measured in pCu interactions at 24 GeV/c. Our neutron spectra are compared with spectra for protons produced near the direction of the incident neutron in pn interactions at FNAL and with neutron spectra measured in pp interactions at the ISR. Exchange mechanisms are studied in the framework of single diffraction dissociation and the triple-Regge model. The scattering of virtual pions and kaons on real protons is investigated. 相似文献

Results on higher moments of the pion multiplicity distribution are presented for pp interactions at 12 and 24 GeV/c incident lab momentum. A simple parametrization for the pion multiplicity distribution is established at 12 and 24 GeV/c and is then used to discuss the energy dependence of higher moments in a range from 4 to about 500 GeV/c incident lab momentum. 相似文献

In this paper we study correlations in multiparticle final states from pp interactions at 12 and 24 GeV/c. In an attempt to distinguish true dynamical correlations from the consequences of kinematics together with PT damping and the leading-particle effect, we compare the data with an independent-emission model which reproduces the single-particle spectra and also with a model that simulates a fragmentation mechanism. We investigate the forward-backward particle configurations and in particular the multiplicity imbalance and charge transfer, defining forward-backward by the largest rapidity gap as well as simply by c.m.s. hemispheres. We also study clustering by looking at distributions of the dispersions in longitudinal rapidity. From the comparison of the data with the models we find clear evidence for dynamical correlations of a sort one would expect from fragmentation-type mechanisms. We also find indications of non-fragmentation formation of neutral meson clusters. 相似文献

The inclusive production of Σ±(1385) is studied in pp interactions at 12 and 24 GeV/c. In this energy range, the inclusive cross sections for Σ+(1385) and Σ?(1385) rise from 0.20 ± 0.03 mb to 0.28 ± 0.03 mb and from 0.07 ± 0.02 mb to 0.12 ± 0.02 mb. The decays of Σ±(1385) account for ~20% of all observed Λ hyperons. The pT2 distributions are compatible with an exponential decrease and the slopes are in agreement with a common value of B ~ 3 (GeV/c)?2. The longitudinal spectra are significantly different: Σ?(1385) is mainly produced in the central region, whereas proton fragmentation contributes strongly to Σ+(1385) production. 相似文献

Data from a high-statistics bubble chamber experiment at 24 GeV/c are used to study the double diffraction dissociation reaction pp→(pπ+π?) (pπ+π?) where both protons of the initial state dissociate into pπ+π? systems. Cross section, mass spectra and dσ/dt' distributions have been determined and are compared with the results found for the single diffraction dissociation reaction pp → p(pπ+π?), which have been obtained from the same experiment. All our findings agree well with what is expected from the factorization hypothesis. 相似文献

A 7.5 GeV linearly polarized photon beam was used to study ?0 production on d, n and p in the SLAC 82 inch bubble chamber. The production of ?0 is found to proceed mainly viat-channel natural parity exchange and to conserve s-channel c.m.s. helicity for small t. The I = 1 contribution to the γN → ?0t-channel amplitude is found to be small at 7.5 GeV. 相似文献

The reaction pp → nucleon + nucleon + pion at 12 and 24 GeV/c is analyzed in terms of the isospin amplitudes for the production of the (Nπ) system. The energy dependence of the amplitude is weak, while the contribution shows the strong energy dependence known from meson exchange reactions. The slope parameter B of the dσ/dt′ distributions of the contribution is a strong function of the (Nπ) mass, decreasing sharply from about 12 GeV?2 at threshold to about 4 GeV?2 above 1700 MeV. Comparing our results for the cross section with those of similar investigations in πp and Kp reactions, we find that factorisation is valid within experimental errors. The results support the conclusion that the contribution is dominated by diffraction dissociation of the proton. 相似文献

Charge distributions for the secondaries from inelastic proton-proton collisions are studied by means of new data from an experiment at 12 and 24 GeV/c (2 m HBC at CERN). By comparison with π±p data at 16 GeV/c, the inclusive charge distributions for the fragments of an incident proton and pion, respectively, are analysed. In addition, the cross sections for charge exchange between cms hemispheres are presented for the various charged-particle multiplicities. For events with no more than one neutral particle, charge and baryon exchange between cms hemispheres are compared to those between clusters. For the inelastic two-prong reactions, the two-dimensional distributions in longitudinal phase space are presented. 相似文献

We present an analysis of the decay of the low-mass diffractive system X produced in the reaction pp → p + X at 12 and 24 GeV/c. The various decay channels of the system have been separated; the decay multiplicity distribution is investigated and compared with the expectations of a two-step picture of diffraction dissociation. In a study of photoproduction at photon energies up to 5.3 GeV in a deuterium bubble chamber the reactions γn→pπ+π?π? and γn→pπ+π?π?π0 were analyzed. Photoproduction of strange particles was investigated and cross sections for the reactions γn→ΛK+π?, Σ?K0π+, pK?K0, ΛK0π+π? and ΛK+π?π0 are presented. The phenomenon of quark confinement is known to be connected with the restoration of apparently broken gauge symmetry. In this paper we focus on a special mechanism which is responsible for such restoration. The major suggestion is that in the treatment of infrared problems certain classical field trajectories are of paramount importance, which trajectories connect seemingly degenerate vacua thereby eliminating the degeneracy. Initially, we demonstrate this mechanism in certain simple non-gauge models. In order of increasing difficulty, we next examine compact quantum electro-dynamics in 2 + 1 space-time dimensions- essentially a variant of unified models of the Georgi-Glashow type. In this case we prove that charge is confined and show that the force between two charges is independent of the distance between them. For small values of the fine structure constant this force is explicitly evaluated. Finally, we turn to the more realistic case of a 3 + 1 dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory, and analyse the contribution of a single pseudoparticle to the correlation functions. It is proposed that the quantum fluctuations of the pseudoparticle are inessential, and that the one-loop approximation is effectively correct even for the large scale pseudoparticles. The emergent conclusion then is that the renormalized Yang-Mills theory is reduced to the problem of evaluating the effects of those configurations which involve many pseudoparticles, due account being taken of the interactions between them. A low-mass S-wave (ππ)0 enhancement is observed in the reaction pp → p (ππ)0 p at 12 and 24 GeV/c incident momentum. The mechanism for producing these low-mass pion pairs is investigated, and it is shown that double pomeron exchange can contribute at most 5% to their production cross section at 24 GeV/c. 相似文献

The cross sections for π±, K±, p, and production in pp collisions have been measured at transverse momenta from 0.48 up to 2.21 GeV/c at 70 GeV. The data are compared with results obtained at lower and higher proton energies and also with the quantum chromodynamics parton model (QPM) calculations. Common behaviour of the cross sections of the form in the energy range above 200 GeV does not take place at lower energies. Qualitatively QPM fits the data and the best agreement is for π+/π? and K+/π+ ratios. 相似文献

Charge properties of the hadronic systems from νp and scattering in BEBC are studied in the framework of the quark-parto model (QPM). The average charges and of a quark jet and a d-qua jet, respectively, are determined according to two different methods. The difference is in agreement with e QPM value of 1. Scaling of charge and energy flow in the angular variable λ is demonstrated. The ratios of charge flows in νp a scattering are in accord with the QPM in both hemispheres. 相似文献

In an experiment with the hydrogen bubble chamber BEBC at CERN multiplicities of hadrons produced in νp and interactions have been investigated. Results are presented on the multiplicities of charged hadrons and neutral pions, forward and backward multiplicities of charged hadrons and correlations between forward and backward multiplicities. Comparisons are made with hadronic reactions and e+e? annihilation. In the framework of the quark-parton model the data imply similar charged multiplicities for the fragments of a u- and a d-quark, and a larger multiplicities for the fragments of a uu- than for a ud-diquark. The correlation data suggest independent fragmentation of the quark and diquark for hadronic masses above ~ 7 GeV and local charge compensation within an event. 相似文献

The spin dependence of inclusive proton and pion production by 7.9 GeV/c protons has been measured using a polarized proton target, for nominal values of x = pLcm/pmaxcm = 0.7 in the transverse momentum range 0.4 GeV/c <ppt < 1.2 GeV/c, and for pt = 0.4 GeV/c in the range 0.1 < x < 0.96.
