Bioresorbable polymers such as polylactide (PLA) and polylactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) have been used successfully as biomaterials in a wide range of medical applications. However, their slow degradation rates and propensity to lose strength before mass have caused problems. A central challenge for the development of these materials is the assurance of consistent and predictable in vivo degradation. Previous work has illustrated the potential to influence polymer degradation using electron beam (e-beam) radiation. The work addressed in this paper investigates further the utilisation of e-beam radiation in order to achieve a more surface specific effect. Variation of e-beam energy was studied as a means to control the effective penetrative depth in poly-l-lactide (PLLA). PLLA samples were exposed to e-beam radiation at individual energies of 0.5 MeV, 0.75 MeV and 1.5 MeV. The near-surface region of the PLLA samples was shown to be affected by e-beam irradiation with induced changes in molecular weight, morphology, flexural strength and degradation profile. Moreover, the depth to which the physical properties of the polymer were affected is dependent on the beam energy used. Computer modelling of the transmission of each e-beam energy level used corresponded well with these findings.  相似文献

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) were mixed at a ratio of 40:60, extruded to form granules and cast into film; then, the PLA, PBAT, and PBAT/PLA film samples were buried in real soil environments. The residual degraded samples were taken regularly from the soil and analyzed by SEM, DSC, TGA, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The analyses showed that PBAT and PLA had different biodegradation mechanisms. Further, the melting temperature and the melting point change of the various components in the PBAT/PLA blend before and after the biodegradation essentially followed the process of the changes in the respective single polymers. After biodegradation, the carbon atom content in the molecular structure of the PBAT, PLA, and PBAT/PLA samples decreased, while the oxygen atom content increased, indicating that the samples indeed degraded. The biodegradation rates of PBAT and PLA in the PBAT/PLA blend were not the same as those for the single materials.  相似文献

The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of processed poly(lactic acid) has been studied and compared to that of raw material. Processing consisted of two different industrial processes: 1) Injection (with or without further annealing); 2) Extrusion followed by injection (with or without further annealing). For this study, an integral method (based on the general analytical solution), differential methods (based on the first conversion derivative and on the 2nd derivative) and special methods have been used. On the other hand, a method based on the maximum decomposition rate has been considered. By doing that, the kinetic parameters (reaction order, frequency factor and activation energy) have been determined. It has been demonstrated that there was only one first-order reaction for the entire conversion range. A new equation (based on the second conversion derivative plot as a function of temperature) was developed allowing the calculation of the reaction order. This method quantifies peak areas (and not peak heights, as reported by Kissinger). It is very useful because it considers both peak shape and width. Activation energy, as determined by using the general analytical solution, was 318 kJ/mol for unprocessed poly(lactic acid) whereas it was 280 ± 5 kJ/mol for processed materials. All the processed materials had approximately the same thermal stability (T5 = 333.0-335.8 °C, at 95% confidence level), which was slightly lower than that of unprocessed materials (T5 = 337.5 °C). PLA melting (during extrusion and injection) was responsible for depolymerization reactions (the small molecules formed during melting processes can volatilize readily).  相似文献

Poly(lactic) acid (PLA) is a compostable biopolymer and has been commercialised for the for the manufacture of short-shelf life products. As a result, increasing amounts of PLA are entering waste management systems and the environment; however, the degradation mechanism is unclear. While hydrolysis of the polymer occurs abiotically at elevated temperature in the presence of water, potential catalytic role for microbes in this process is yet to be established. In this study, we examined the degradation of PLA coupons from commercial packaging at a range of temperatures (25°, 37°, 45°, 50° and 55 °C) in soil and compost and compared with the degradation rates in sterile aqueous conditions by measuring loss of tensile strength and molecular weight (Mw). In addition, in order to assess the possible influence of abiotic soluble factors in compost and soil on degradation of PLA, degradation rates in microorganism-rich compost and soil were compared with sterile compost and soil extract at 50 °C. Temperature was determined to be the key parameter in PLA degradation and degradation rates in microorganism-rich compost and soil were faster than in sterile water at temperatures 45° and 50 °C determined by tensile strength and Mw loss. Furthermore, all tensile strength was lost faster after 30 and 36 days in microorganism-rich compost and soil, respectively, than in sterile compost and soil extract, 57 and 54 days, respectively at 50 °C. Significantly more Mw, 68% and 64%, was lost in compost and soil, respectively than in compost extract, Mw, 53%; and in soil extract, 57%. Therefore, degradation rates were faster in microorganism-rich compost and soil than in sterile compost and soil extract, which contained the abiotic soluble factors of compost and soil at 50 °C. These comparative studies support a direct role for microorganisms in PLA degradation at elevated temperatures in humid environments. No change in tensile strength or Mw was observed either 25° or 37 °C after 1 year suggesting that accumulation of PLA in the environment may cause future pollution issues.  相似文献

Biodegradation of poly(lactic acid) and its nanocomposites   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
PLA nanocomposites based on organically modified montmorillonites at 5% w/w loading were prepared by melt blending using an internal mixer and then degraded in a commercial compost. The addition of nanoclays was found to increase the PLA degradation rate, especially for the highest dispersed clay in the polymer matrix. Biodegradation by microorganisms isolated from the compost showed the bacterium Bacillus licheniformis as one of the responsible for PLA biodegradation in compost. It was also found that clays can influence the polymer bacterial degradation depending on their chemical structure and affinity of the bacterium towards the clay.  相似文献

Chemical modification of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with N‐acetoxy‐phthalimide (NAPI) was performed in the melt by reactive extrusion, without using any peroxide initiator. The aminyl and nitroxide radicals produced from the NAPI thermal degradation, were, respectively, used (a) to create PLA macroradicals, and (b) to functionalize the PLA samples through nitroxide radical coupling. Depending on the extrusion temperature and the initial NAPI concentration, grafting rates up to 0.24 mol % were measured, modifying the PLA optical properties. This study represents an original new way of modification of PLA without the use of conventional peroxide initiators. Indeed, the undesirable side reactions (PLA branching or crosslinking) usually observed when using peroxides to initiate the radical grafting of PLA were avoided when using NAPI. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) depolymerases are categorized into protease-type and lipase-type. Protease-types can hydrolyze poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) but not poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA). Lipase-types, including cutinase-like enzyme (CLE) from Cryptococcus sp. strain S-2 preferentially hydrolyze PDLA. Both enzymes degraded not only PLA emulsion but also PLA film, in which amorphous region is preferentially attacked, but crystalline region can be also attacked. Stereocomplex PLA (sc-PLA) formed by 50:50 blending of PLLA and PDLA included no homo crystals, but a tiny homo crystallization peak appeared and crystallinity increased by 5% when attacked by CLE, although no significant change of molecular weight and crystalline size was found. Enantioselective degradation must occur in amorphous region of PLLA/PDLA film and preferentially hydrolyzed PDLA, resulting in a slightly excess amount of PLLA remained, which must be crystallized.  相似文献

The methods for producing reference test materials for biodegradation evaluation tests have been studied. Mechanical crushing at low temperature of polymer pellets using dry ice was selected for the method of producing polymer powder of poly(lactic acid) (PLA). The powders were fractionated using 60 mesh (250 μm) and 120 mesh (125 μm) sieves. The size distributions were then measured. The average diameter of the PLA particles obtained by this method was 214.2 μm. The biodegradation speeds of these PLA polymer powders were evaluated by two methods based on the international standard and one in vitro method based on the enzymatic degradation. First, the degree of biodegradation for this PLA powder was 91% for 35 days in a controlled compost determined by a method based on ISO 14855-1 (JIS K6953) at 58 °C managed by the Mitsui Chemical Analysis and Consulting Service, Inc. (Japan). Second, these polymer powders were measured for biodegradation by the Microbial Oxidative Degradation Analyzer (MODA) in a controlled compost at 58 °C and 70 °C based on ISO/DIS 14855-2 under many conditions. The degree of biodegradation for this PLA powder was approximately 80% for 50 days. In addition, the polymer powders were biodegraded by Proteinase K which is a PLA degradation enzyme. This polymer powder was suitable as a reference material for the evaluation methods of biodegradation.  相似文献

The demand for injectable dermal filler has unde rgone significant growth with the rapid development of the beauty industry.Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) as a benefit of excellent biocompatibility and long-term promotion of collagen regeneration has been favored as a commonly used filler. However, the effects of chirality and particle size of PLA on the efficacy of dermal filler have not been studied. In this study,we prepared three kinds of microspheres(MSs) consisting of poly(D-lactic acid)(PDLA MS),poly(L-lactic acid)(PLLA MS),or meso-PLA(PDLLA MS)at 5,10 and 20 μmto reveal the different biological functions as dermal filler.Following intradermal injection into guinea pig,it was found that PLLA MS induced the slightest inflammation, and the level of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β induced by PLLA MS is only 0.3 or 0.7-fold of that induced by PDLA or PDLLA MS,respectively.More importantly,PLLA MS significantly stimulated the regeneration of collagen, which was 1.4 or 1.1 times higher than those stimulated by PDLA MS or PDLLA MS,respectively. The size of PLA MSs did not affect the levels of inflammation and collagen regeneration. The results confirmed the superiority of PLLA as a dermal filler.  相似文献

Transparent biaxial oriented poly(lactic acid) (BOPLA) films with improved dimensional stability were successfully prepared by controlling the crystallization of poly(lactic acid) (PLA). The crystalline morphology of PLA films can be manipulated by changing certain processing parameters, such as stretch ratio, heat setting temperatures, and heat setting time. Optical and mechanical properties as well as dimensional stability of the resulting polymer films are governed by their crystallinity and crystalline morphology. Crystallization behavior and kinetics of PLA, therefore, were investigated using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. Mechanical properties and the dimensional stability of the biaxial oriented PLA films were obtained and correlated with their processing conditions. Poly(lactic acid) films prepared by melt extrusion methods have great potential for food packaging, shrink labeling and protective film applications. However, shrinkage at elevated processing temperature should be minimized to avoid puckering of the polymer film. Shrinkage of less than 2% was achieved for a BOPLA film stretched 300% in both directions at 75 °C and then annealed at 160 °C for 30 s. Fabrication, properties, and potential applications of a series of biodegradable films will be described.  相似文献

The processing of poly(lactic acid) (injection and extrusion/injection) as well as annealing of processed materials were studied in order to analyze the variation of its chemical structure, thermal degradation and mechanical properties. Processing of PLA was responsible for a decrease in molecular weight, as determined by GPC, due to chain scission. The degree of crystallinity was evaluated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. It was found that mechanical processing led to the quasi disappearance of crystal structure whereas it was recovered after annealing. These findings were qualitatively corroborated by means of FTIR. By analyzing 1H NMR and 13C NMR chemical shifts and peak areas, it was possible to affirm that the chemical composition of PLA did not change after processing, but the proportion of methyl groups increased, thus indicating the presence of a different molecular environment. The thermal stability of the various materials was established by calculating various characteristic temperatures from thermograms as well as conversion and conversion derivative curves. Finally, the mechanical behaviour was determined by means of tensile testing (Young modulus, yield strength and elongation at break).  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is one of the most used commodity polymers, especially for food and beverage applications, and its recycling is of great importance because of the possible use in the textile and construction industries. On the other hand, the interest in biodegradable polymers has led, in recent years, to the use of materials such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) also in the food and beverage industry. The presence of small amounts of PLA in the PET waste can significantly affect the post-consumer recycling process. In this work, the effect of the presence of small amounts of PLA on the recycling of PET bottles is investigated by rheological, mechanical, morphological and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicate that this presence can significantly affect the rheological properties under non-isothermal elongational flow, while the mechanical properties were considerably affected only in some circumstances and the thermal stability was not significantly modified.  相似文献

This work investigates reinforcing poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanocomposites using triazine derivative-grafted cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). A hydrophobic triazine derivative was synthesized and applied to modify CNCs to improve their thermal stability and diminish the hydrophilicity of the nanoparticles. CNCs before and after modification were used to reinforce PLA nanocomposites by a hot compression process. The results of thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the initial thermal decomposition temperature of modified nanocrystals was improved by approximately 100 °C compared to the original CNCs. That is, the thermal stability of modified cellulose nanocrystals was improved due to the shielding effect of CNCs by a hydrophobic aliphatic amine layer on the surface of the nanoparticles. The results of dynamic contact angle measurements revealed a decrease of hydrophilicity of the modified CNCs. The results from scanning electron microscopy and a UV–Vis spectrophotometer revealed that the compatibility between the modified nanocrystals and the PLA was improved. Finally, the results of tensile tests indicated a significant improvement in terms of breaking strength and elongation at the break point.  相似文献

Binary and ternary blends composed of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), thermoplastic starch (TPS) and glycidyl methacrylate grafted poly (ethylene octane) (GPOE) were prepared using Haake Mixer. The mechanical morphology, thermal properties, water absorption, and degradation properties of the blends were also investigated. The elongation at break and impact strength of the ternary blends were greatly increased by the filling of GPOE. Compared to non-GPOE binary blends, the morphology of ternary blends with GPOE indicated that starch granules melted and there was good compatibility between PLA matrix and TPS. The mechanism and schematic diagram of the reactions in PLA, TPS, and GPOE were proposed and proved by testing and observing the morphology. Moreover, the biodegradation and thermal decomposition were studied through compost testing and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. Biodegradation results indicated that the blends have the excellent biodegrade ability.  相似文献

Phase morphology exerts a tremendous influence on the properties of polymer blends. The development of the blend morphology depends not only on the intrinsic structure of the component polymers but also on extrinsic factors such as viscosity ratio, shearing force and temperature in the melt processing. In this study, various poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) materials with different melt viscosity were prepared, and then poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/PBAT blends with different viscosity ratio were prepared in a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder under constant processing conditions. The influence of viscosity ratio on the morphology, mechanical, thermal and rheological properties of PLA/PBAT (70/30 w/w) blends was investigated. The experimental results showed that the morphology and properties of PLA/PBAT blends strongly depended on the viscosity ratio. Finer size PBAT phase were observed for viscosity ratio less than 1 (λ < 1) compared to samples with λ > 1. It was found that the interfacial tensions of PLA and PBAT were significantly different when the viscosity ratio was changed, the lowest interfacial tensions (0.12 mN/m) was obtained when the viscosity was 0.77. Additionally, the maximal tensile strength in PLA/PBAT blends were obtained when the viscosity ratio was 0.44, while the maximal impact properties were obtained when the viscosity ratio was 1.95.  相似文献

Low-molecular-mass bio-polyesters, such as lactic acid oligomers, constitute a growing category of plasticizers for poly (lactic acid), since they show good compatibility and are respectful of the environment. This study focuses on the glass transition of a series of oligomers with different molecular weights, with the aim of investigating how their associated dynamics occur. Dielectric and calorimetric results are combined to study the molecular mobility in a large temperature range. In comparison with poly (lactic acid), the oligomers exhibit a lower fragility index and smaller cooperative rearranging regions. Among oligomers, the fragility is clearly dependent on the molecular weight, whereas the variations of the cooperativity are subtler.  相似文献

The main aim of this study was to synthesis of poly (lactic acid) (PLA)‐graft‐glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as well as its influence on the properties of PLA/banana fiber biocomposites. PLA‐graft‐GMA graft copolymer (GC) was synthesized by melt blending PLA with GMA using benzoyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide as initiators. Graft copolymerization was confirmed by FTIR and 1H‐NMR spectroscopic studies. PLA/silane treated banana fiber (SiB) biocomposites with various GC concentrations were prepared by melt blending followed by injection molding techniques. The influence of GC content on the mechanical, thermal and moisture resistance properties of the composite was investigated. The addition of 15 wt% GC content in the biocomposite provided optimum tensile and flexural strength, which is attributed to the greater compatibility between fiber and PLA matrix. The thermal properties of biocomposites have been evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis which provided evidence of improved interfacial adhesion between SiB and PLA by the addition of GC. Additionally, GC enhanced the moisture absorption resistance of biocomposites. These results indicated that GC is indeed a good candidate as a compatibilizing agent to improve the compatibility in PLA/fiber biocomposites. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Effect of dyeing on melting behavior of poly(lactic acid) fabric   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The effect of the dyeing on the melting behavior of poly(lactic acid) fabrics was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter. The DSC melting peaks at 10°C min-1 of the untreated poly(lactic acid) fabric were observed at a temperature higher than those of the dyed fabrics. The restricting force from the extended tie molecules along the fiber axis seems to decrease in the dyeing process. When the sample was rapidly heated, the crystallites melted at lower temperatures since recrystallization was restricted. It was estimated, based on the heating-rate dependency of melting behavior, that the original crystallites of the untreated sample melted at 146.1°C and those of the dyed samples melted at higher temperatures, suggesting that their crystallites are grown to be more perfect in the dyeing process. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Polylactide (PLA) crosslinked by using both triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) and electron radiation or using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was studied with the aim of examining the behaviour of the modified polymer under various environmental conditions. Thus, the polymer samples were subjected to composting in an industrial pile, exposed to proteinase K, or incubated in sea water. The number-average molecular weight (Mn), melt flow index (MFI), crystallinity (χ), tensile strength (σM) and mass loss (in the case of samples treated with proteinase K) were determined. It was found that neat PLA irradiated with high-energy electrons underwent degradation that increased during composting. As a result, the value of Mn of this polymer dramatically decreased. It appeared that PLA crosslinked with TAIC and electron radiation contained, in addition to the crosslinked phase, a phase strongly degraded by this radiation, which facilitated hydrolytic degradation during composting. The σM value of PLA crosslinked with TAIC and electron radiation rapidly decreased during composting, whereas that of PLA crosslinked chemically and composted for three weeks slightly increased. As the electron radiation dose increased, the mass loss of PLA containing TAIC and treated with proteinase K decreased, which indicated that the physical crosslinking of PLA hindered enzymatic degradation of this polymer. Important changes in both neat and physically crosslinked PLA incubated in sea water for nine weeks were not detected.  相似文献

Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) has properties suitable for many applications. However, PLA's properties are affected by environmental conditions. In this study, the glass-rubber transition temperatures (Tg) of PLA films were measured during immersion (i.e., in-situ) in pure alcohols and alcohol aqueous solutions using a dynamic mechanical analysis technique. The Tg of PLA decreased when immersed in alcohols. For pure aliphatic alcohols, the Tg reduction became smaller as the number of carbons (C1–C10) in the alcohol main chains increased. The Fox equation and the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP)/Flory-Huggins (FH) model were used to explain the Tg reduction. The relationships explained the interactions between PLA and pure alcohols with small molecules (C1–C8), but bigger pure alcohols (C9–C10) did not fit the prediction. The chemical isomerism in pure propanol (i.e., propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol) did not affect the Tg reduction. The Tg reduction in propan-2-ol aqueous solutions was concentration dependent although the partition coefficients based on the HSP and the FH parameters did not fit this relationship. The in-situ immersion of PLA in alcohol solutions could be used to evaluate the change in Tg from the Tg of dry PLA.  相似文献
