The 2-constraint bin packing problem consists in packing a given number of items, each one characterised by two different but not related dimensions, into the minimum number of bins in such a way to do not exceed the capacity of the bins in either dimension. The development of the heuristics for this problem is challenged by the need of a proper definition of the criterion for evaluating the feasibility of the two capacity constraints on the two different dimensions. In this paper, we propose a computational evaluation of several criteria, and two simple but effective algorithms—a greedy and neighbourhood search algorithms—for solving the 2-constraint bin packing problem. An extensive computational analysis supports our main claim.  相似文献

We consider two types of orthogonal, oriented, rectangular, two-dimensional packing problems. The first is the strip packing problem, for which four new and improved level-packing algorithms are presented. Two of these algorithms guarantee a packing that may be disentangled by guillotine cuts. These are combined with a two-stage heuristic designed to find a solution to the variable-sized bin packing problem, where the aim is to pack all items into bins so as to minimise the packing area. This heuristic packs the levels of a solution to the strip packing problem into large bins and then attempts to repack the items in those bins into smaller bins in order to reduce wasted space. The results of the algorithms are compared to those of seven level-packing heuristics from the literature by means of a large number of strip-packing benchmark instances. It is found that the new algorithms are an improvement over known level-packing heuristics for the strip packing problem. The advancements made by the new and improved algorithms are limited in terms of utilised space when applied to the variable-sized bin packing problem. However, they do provide results faster than many existing algorithms.  相似文献

The Generalized Bin Packing Problem (GBPP) is a recently introduced packing problem where, given a set of bins characterized by volume and cost and a set of items characterized by volume and profit (which also depends on bins), we want to select a subset of items to be loaded into a subset of bins which maximizes the total net profit, while satisfying the volume and bin availability constraints. The total net profit is given by the difference between the total profit of the loaded items and the total cost of the used bins. In this paper, we consider the stochastic version of the GBPP (S-GBPP), where the item profits are random variables to take into account the profit oscillations due to the handling operations for bin loading. The probability distribution of these random variables is assumed to be unknown. By using the asymptotic theory of extreme values a deterministic approximation for the S-GBPP is derived.  相似文献

One of main difficulties of multi-dimensional packing problems is the fragmentation of free space into several unusable small parts after a few items are packed. This study proposes a defragmentation technique to combine the fragmented space into a continuous usable space, which potentially allows the packing of additional items. We illustrate the effectiveness of this technique using the two- and three-dimensional bin packing problem, where the aim is to load all given items (represented by rectangular boxes) into the minimum number of identical bins. Experimental results based on well-known 2D and 3D bin packing data sets show that our defragmentation technique alone is able to produce solutions approaching the quality of considerably more complex meta-heuristic approaches for the problem. In conjunction with a bin shuffling strategy for incremental improvement, our resultant algorithm outperforms all leading meta-heuristic approaches based on the commonly used benchmark data by a significant margin.  相似文献

The bin packing problem with conflicts (BPC) consists of minimizing the number of bins used to pack a set of items, where some items cannot be packed together in the same bin due to compatibility restrictions. The concepts of dual-feasible functions (DFF) and data-dependent dual-feasible functions (DDFF) have been used in the literature to improve the resolution of several cutting and packing problems. In this paper, we propose a general framework for deriving new DDFF as well as a new concept of generalized data-dependent dual-feasible functions (GDDFF), a conflict generalization of DDFF. The GDDFF take into account the structure of the conflict graph using the techniques of graph triangulation and tree-decomposition. Then we show how these techniques can be used in order to improve the existing lower bounds.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a class of bin selection and packing problems (BPP) in which potential bins are of various types, have two resource constraints, and the resource requirement for each object differs for each bin type. The problem is to select bins and assign the objects to bins so as to minimize the sum of bin costs while meeting the two resource constraints. This problem represents an extension of the classical two-dimensional BPP in which bins are homogeneous. Typical applications of this research include computer storage device selection with file assignment, robot selection with work station assignment, and computer processor selection with task assignment. Three solution algorithms have been developed and tested: a simple greedy heuristic, a method based onsimulated annealing (SA) and an exact algorithm based onColumn Generation with Branch and Bound (CG). An LP-based method for generating tight lower bounds was also developed (LB). Several hundred test problems based on computer storage device selection and file assignment were generated and solved. The heuristic solved problems up to 100 objects in less than a second; average solution value was within about 3% of the optimum. SA improved solutions to an average gap of less than 1% but a significant increase in computing time. LB produced average lower bounds within 3% of optimum within a few seconds. CG is practical for small to moderately-sized problems — possibly as many as 50 objects.  相似文献

Bin packing with fragmentable items is a variant of the classic bin packing problem where items may be cut into smaller fragments. The objective is to minimize the number of item fragments, or equivalently, to minimize the number of cuts, for a given number of bins. Models based on packing fragmentable items are useful for representing finite shared resources. In this article, we present improvements to approximation and metaheuristic algorithms to obtain an optimality-preserving optimization algorithm with polynomial complexity, worst-case performance guarantees and parametrizable running time. We also present a new family of fast lower bounds and prove their worst-case performance ratios. We evaluate the performance and quality of the algorithm and the best lower bound through a series of computational experiments on representative problem instances. For the studied problem sets, one consisting of 180 problems with up to 20 items and another consisting of 450 problems with up to 1024 items, the lower bound performs no worse than 5 / 6. For the first problem set, the algorithm found an optimal solution in 92 % of all 1800 runs. For the second problem set, the algorithm found an optimal solution in 99 % of all 4500 runs. No run lasted longer than 220 ms.  相似文献

We study a new kind of online bin packing with conflicts, motivated by a problem arising when scheduling jobs on the Grid. In this bin packing problem, the set of items is given at the beginning, together with a set of conflicts on pairs of items. A conflict on a pair of items implies that they cannot be assigned to a common bin. The online scenario is realized as follows. Variable-sized bins arrive one by one, and items need to be assigned to each bin before the next bin arrives. We analyze the online problem as well as semi-online versions of it, which are the variant where the sizes of the arriving bins are monotonically non-increasing as well as the variant where they are monotonically non-decreasing.  相似文献

We are given a set of objects, each characterized by a weight and a fragility, and a large number of uncapacitated bins. Our aim is to find the minimum number of bins needed to pack all objects, in such a way that in each bin the sum of the object weights is less than or equal to the smallest fragility of an object in the bin. The problem is known in the literature as the Bin Packing Problem with Fragile Objects, and appears in the telecommunication field, when one has to assign cellular calls to available channels by ensuring that the total noise in a channel does not exceed the noise acceptance limit of a call.We propose a branch-and-bound and several branch-and-price algorithms for the exact solution of the problem, and improve their performance by the use of lower bounds and tailored optimization techniques. In addition we also develop algorithms for the optimal solution of the related knapsack problem with fragile objects. We conduct an extensive computational evaluation on the benchmark set of instances, and show that the proposed algorithms perform very well.  相似文献

Three-dimensional orthogonal bin packing is a problem NP-hard in the strong sense where a set of boxes must be orthogonally packed into the minimum number of three-dimensional bins. We present a two-level tabu search for this problem. The first-level aims to reduce the number of bins. The second optimizes the packing of the bins. This latter procedure is based on the Interval Graph representation of the packing, proposed by Fekete and Schepers, which reduces the size of the search space. We also introduce a general method to increase the size of the associated neighborhoods, and thus the quality of the search, without increasing the overall complexity of the algorithm. Extensive computational results on benchmark problem instances show the effectiveness of the proposed approach, obtaining better results compared to the existing ones.  相似文献

The more-dimensional bin packing problem (BPP) considered here requires packing a set of rectangular-shaped items into a minimum number of identical rectangular-shaped bins. All items may be rotated and the guillotine cut constraint has to be respected. A straightforward heuristic is presented that is based on a method for the container loading problem following a wall-building approach and on a method for the one-dimensional BPP. 1,800 new benchmark instances are introduced for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional BPP. The instances include more than 1,500 items on average. Applied to these very large instances, the heuristic generates solutions of acceptable quality in short computation times. Moreover, the influence of different instance parameters on the solution quality is investigated by an extended computational study.  相似文献

The three-dimensional bin packing problem consists of packing a set of boxes into the minimum number of bins. In this paper we propose a new GRASP algorithm for solving three-dimensional bin packing problems which can also be directly applied to the two-dimensional case. The constructive phase is based on a maximal-space heuristic developed for the container loading problem. In the improvement phase, several new moves are designed and combined in a VND structure. The resulting hybrid GRASP/VND algorithm is simple and quite fast and the extensive computational results on test instances from the literature show that the quality of the solutions is equal to or better than that obtained by the best existing heuristic procedures.  相似文献

In this paper the rectangle packing problem (RPP) is considered. The RPP consists in finding a packing pattern of small rectangles within a larger rectangle such that the area utilization is maximized. We develop new heuristics for the RPP which are based on the G4-heuristic for the pallet loading problem. Given a set of rectangular items which may not be rotated and an unlimited number of identical rectangular bins, we consider the problem of packing each item into a bin so that no two items overlap and the number of required bins is minimized. The problem is strongly NP-hard and finds practical applications in cutting and packing. We discuss a simple deterministic approximation algorithm which is used in the initialization of a tabu search approach. We then present a tabu search algorithm and analyze its average performance through extensive computational experiments.  相似文献

The NP-hard problem of packing items from a given set into bins so as to maximize the number of bins used, subject to the constraint that each bin be filled to at least a given threshold, is considered. Approximation algorithms are presented that provide guarantees of , , and the optimal number, at running time costs of O(n), O(nlogn), and O(nlog2n), respectively, and the average case behavior of these algorithms is explored via empirical tests on randomly generated sets of items.  相似文献

The grouping genetic algorithm (GGA) is a genetic algorithm heavily modified to suit the structure of grouping problems. Those are the problems where the aim is to find a good partition of a set or to group together the members of the set. The bin packing problem (BPP) is a well known NP-hard grouping problem: items of various sizes have to be grouped inside bins of fixed capacity. On the other hand, the reduction method of Martello and Toth, based on their dominance criterion, constitutes one of the best OR techniques for optimization of the BPP to date.In this article, we first describe the GGA paradigm as compared to the classic Holland-style GA and the ordering GA. We then show how the bin packing GGA can be enhanced with a local optimization inspired by the dominance criterion. An extensive experimental comparison shows that the combination yields an algorithm superior to either of its components.  相似文献

Constraint order packing, which is an extension to the classical two-dimensional bin packing, adds an additional layer of complexity to known bin packing problems by new additional placement and order constraints. While existing meta heuristics usually produce good results for common bin packing problems in any dimension, they are not able to take advantage of special structures resulting from these constraints in this particular two-dimensional prolbem type. We introduce a hybrid algorithm that is based on greedy search and is nested within a network search algorithm with dynamic node expansion and meta logic, inspired by human intuition, to overrule decisions implied by the greedy search. Due to the design of this algorithm we can control the performance characteristics to lie anywhere between classical network search algorithms and local greedy search. We will present the algorithm, discuss bounds and show that their performance outperforms common approaches on a variety of data sets based on industrial applications. Furthermore, we discuss time complexity and show some ideas to speed up calculations and improve the quality of results.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a variation of the bin packing problem in which bins of different types have different costs and capacities. Furthermore, each bin has to be filled at least to a certain level, which depends on its type. We present a set partitioning formulation and an exact optimization algorithm which exploits column generation and specialized heuristics. We compare our algorithm with the general purpose solver ILOG CPLEX, running on two compact ILP formulations and we report on experimental results on instances we have generated from data-sets for the variable size bin packing problem.  相似文献

The irregular strip packing problem is a combinatorial optimization problem that requires to place a given set of two-dimensional polygons within a rectangular container so that no polygon overlaps with other polygons or protrudes from the container, where each polygon is not necessarily convex. The container has a fixed width, while its length can change so that all polygons are placed in it. The objective is to find a layout of the set of polygons that minimizes the length of the container.We propose an algorithm that separates overlapping polygons based on nonlinear programming, and an algorithm that swaps two polygons in a layout so as to find their new positions in the layout with the least overlap. We incorporate these algorithms as components into an iterated local search algorithm for the overlap minimization problem and then develop an algorithm for the irregular strip packing problem using the iterated local search algorithm. Computational comparisons on representative instances disclose that our algorithm is competitive with other existing algorithms. Moreover, our algorithm updates several best known results.  相似文献
