Chaotic invariant sets for planar maps typically contain periodic orbits whose stable and unstable manifolds cross in grid-like fashion. Consider the rotation of orbits around a central fixed point. The intersections of the invariant manifolds of two periodic points with distinct rotation numbers can imply complicated rotational behavior. We show, in particular, that when the unstable manifold of one of these periodic points crosses the stable manifold of the other, and, similarly, the unstable manifold of the second crosses the stable manifold of the first, so that the segments of these invariant manifolds form a topological rectangle, then all rotation numbers between those of the two given orbits are represented. The result follows from a horseshoe-like construction.

In this paper we consider an intra-host model for the dynamics of malaria. The model describes the dynamics of the blood stage malaria parasites and their interaction with host cells, in particular red blood cells (RBC) and immune effectors. We establish the equilibrium points of the system and analyze their stability using the theory of competitive systems, compound matrices and stability of periodic orbits. We established that the disease-free equilibrium is globally stable if and only if the basic reproduction number satisfies R0?1 and the parasite will be cleared out of the host. If R0>1, a unique endemic equilibrium is globally stable and the parasites persist at the endemic steady state. In the presence of the immune response, the numerical analysis of the model shows that the endemic equilibrium is unstable.  相似文献

We study the coherent orientations of the moduli spaces of holomorphic curves in Symplectic Field Theory, generalizing a construction due to Floer and Hofer. In particular we examine their behavior at multiple closed Reeb orbits under change of the asymptotic direction. The orientations are determined by a certain choice of orientation at each closed Reeb orbit, that is similar to the orientation of the unstable tangent spaces of critical points in finite–dimensional Morse theory.in final form: 22 October 2003  相似文献

We consider a perturbation of an integrable Hamiltonian system having an equilibrium point of elliptic-hyperbolic type, having a homoclinic orbit. More precisely, we consider an (n + 2)-degree-of-freedom near integrable Hamiltonian with n centers and 2 saddles, and assume that the homoclinic orbit is preserved under the perturbation. On the center manifold near the equilibrium, there is a Cantorian family of hyperbolic KAM tori, and we study the homoclinic intersections between the stable and unstable manifolds associated to such tori. We establish that, in general, the manifolds intersect along transverse homoclinic orbits. In a more concrete model, such homoclinic orbits can be detected, in a first approximation, from nondegenerate critical points of a Mel’nikov potential. We provide bounds for the number of transverse homoclinic orbits using that, in general, the potential will be a Morse function (which gives a lower bound) and can be approximated by a trigonometric polynomial (which gives an upper bound).  相似文献

We consider the equations of motion of n vortices of equal circulation in the plane, in a disk and on a sphere. The vortices form a polygonal equilibrium in a rotating frame of reference. We use numerical continuation in a boundary value setting to determine the Lyapunov families of periodic orbits that arise from the polygonal relative equilibrium. When the frequency of a Lyapunov orbit and the frequency of the rotating frame have a rational relationship, the orbit is also periodic in the inertial frame. A dense set of Lyapunov orbits, with frequencies satisfying a Diophantine equation, corresponds to choreographies of n vortices. We include numerical results for all cases, for various values of n, and we provide key details on the computational approach.  相似文献

We generalize the Weinstein-Moser theorem on the existence of nonlinear normal modes near an equilibrium in a Hamiltonian system to a theorem on the existence of relative periodic orbits near a relative equilibrium in a Hamiltonian system with continuous symmetries. In particular, we prove that under appropriate hypotheses there exist relative periodic orbits near relative equilibria even when these relative equilibria are singular points of the corresponding moment map, i.e. when the reduced spaces are singular.  相似文献

The collinear relative equilibrium solutions are among the few explicitly known periodic solutions of the Newtonian three-body problem. When the energy and angular momentum constants are varied slightly, these unstable periodic orbits become normally hyperbolic invariant spheres whose stable and unstable manifolds form separatrices in the integral manifolds. The goal of this paper is to construct simple isolating blocks for these invariant spheres analogous to those introduced by Conley in the restricted three-body problem. This allows continuation of the invariant set and the separatrices to energies and angular momenta far from those of the relative equilibrium.

We examine the strange chaotic attractor and its unstable periodic orbits for a one degree of freedom nonlinear oscillator with a non-symmetric potential that models a quarter car forced by the road profile. We propose an efficient method of chaos control that stabilizes these orbits using a pulsive feedback technique. A discrete set of pulses is able to transfer the system from one periodic state to another.  相似文献

The influence of Casimir force on the nonlinear behavior of nanoscale electrostatic actuators is studied in this paper. A one degree of freedom mass-spring model is adopted and the bifurcation properties of the actuators are obtained. With the change of the geometrical dimensions, the number of equilibrium point varies from zero to two. Stability analysis shows that one equilibrium point is Hopf point and the other is unstable saddle point when there are two equilibrium points. We also obtain the phase portraits, in which the periodic orbits exist around the Hopf point, and a homoclinic orbit passes through the unstable saddle point.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a new class of piecewise linear (PWL) systems with two virtual stable node-foci (the meaning of “virtual” is from Bernardo et al. (2008)) which exhibits periodic orbits and chaos. This fact that PWL systems have no unstable equilibria but has chaos will unavoidably make the exploration of this chaos more complicated. Particular values for bifurcation diagram are provided. Based on mathematical analysis and Poincaré map, periodic orbits of this kind of system without unstable equilibrium points are derived, the corresponding existence theorems are given, and the obtained results are applied to specific examples.  相似文献

In this article we study the topology of Anosov flows in 3-manifolds. Specifically we consider the lifts to the universal cover of the stable and unstable foliations and analyze the leaf spaces of these foliations. We completely determine the structure of the non Hausdorff points in these leaf spaces. There are many consequences: (1) when the leaf spaces are non Hausdorff, there are closed orbits in the manifold which are freely homotopic, (2) suspension Anosov flows are, up to topological conjugacy, the only Anosov flows without free homotopies between closed orbits, (3) when there are infinitely many stable leaves (in the universal cover) which are non separated from each other, then we produce a torus in the manifold which is transverse to the Anosov flow and therefore is incompressible, (4) we produce non Hausdorff examples in hyperbolic manifolds and derive important properties of the limit sets of the stable/unstable leaves in the universal cover. The role of viral infection in phytoplankton dynamics without and with incubation population class is studied. It is observed that phytoplankton species in the absence of incubated class are unstable around an endemic equilibrium but the presence of delay in the form of incubated class has made it conditionally stable around an endemic equilibrium. We also observe that the dynamical system is very sensitive to the transfer rate from susceptible to incubated class and when it crosses a certain threshold the phytoplankton population start oscillating around the endemic equilibrium, shown both analytically and numerically.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a generalized two-species contest-competition model with an Allee effect. We provide a complete analysis of the global dynamics of the system. In particular, we determine all the invariant manifolds, the extinction, the exclusion and the coexistence regions. We use tools from topology and dynamical systems to show that all orbits must converge to one of the equilibrium points of the system. The analysis shows that there are several potential scenarios including competition coexistence, exclusion and extinction.  相似文献

We discuss the numerical computation of homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits in delay differential equations. Such connecting orbits are approximated using projection boundary conditions, which involve the stable and unstable manifolds of a steady state solution. The stable manifold of a steady state solution of a delay differential equation (DDE) is infinite-dimensional, a problem which we circumvent by reformulating the end conditions using a special bilinear form. The resulting boundary value problem is solved using a collocation method. We demonstrate results, showing homoclinic orbits in a model for neural activity and travelling wave solutions to the delayed Hodgkin–Huxley equation. Our numerical tests indicate convergence behaviour that corresponds to known theoretical results for ODEs and periodic boundary value problems for DDEs.  相似文献

Buckling of thin nanowires on a pre-strained compliant substrate has been widely used to make nanowire-based stretchable electronics. On nanometer scale, surface effect plays an important role on a buckled nanowire structure. In addition, as the amplitude of the deflection of the buckled nanowire is larger than its thickness, geometrical nonlinearity should be taken into account. Taking the kinetic energy caused by the out-of-plane motion into account, and on the basis of Euler beam theory, a theoretical model for a nanowire-substrate structure is established, combined with the influences of the nano-scale surface effect and geometrical nonlinearity. By means of Lagrange's equation, the equation of motion is derived and then solved by the Symplectic (Partitioned) Runge–Kutta method (PRK). Several numerical examples are analysed to study the nonlinear vibration of the structure. The analytical expressions of stable and unstable equilibrium points, and the relationship between the vibration amplitude and the natural frequency are obtained. The influences of surface effect and pre-strain on the dynamic behaviour are analysed. Through these numerical results, one can find that when the surface elastic modulus and surface residual stress are considered, the number of unstable equilibrium points would increase to three. The frequency obtained with positive surface elastic modulus is greater than that obtained with negative surface elastic modulus, implying that the positive surface elastic modulus can make the nanowire-substrate structure stiffer. Furthermore, when the pre-strain increases, the locations of stable and unstable equilibrium points move further away from the initial displacement, and the homoclinic orbits become expanded. The results presented in this paper should be useful to guide the design of nanowire-based stretchable electronics.  相似文献

Invariant manifold play an important role in the qualitative analysis of dynamical systems, such as in studying homoclinic orbit and heteroclinic orbit. This paper focuses on stable and unstable manifolds of hyperbolic singular points. For a type of n-dimensional quadratic system, such as Lorenz system, Chen system, Rossler system if n = 3, we provide the series expression of manifolds near the hyperbolic singular point, and proved its convergence using the proof of the formal power series. The expressions can be used to investigate the heteroclinic orbits and homoclinic orbits of hyperbolic singular points.  相似文献

The problem of the stability of the Riemann ellipsoids of a rotating uniform self-gravitating ideal liquid is considered within the framework of the Lyapunov definition of the stability of the form of equilibrium [1]. The regions such that almost all the ellipsoids belonging to it are unstable forms of equilibrium, specified in explicit analytical form, are determined in parameter spaces of the first and second families of Riemann ellipsoids. The proof is based on the general fact (which is formulated and justified separately) that, when an unstable equilibrium position of an autonomous system is stable with respect to a certain function, the trajectory of this system, which belongs to a certain manifold, is obtained, and also on a consequence of this fact, which has a constructive form. The stability of the form of ellipsoidal figures of equilibrium, with the exception of special cases of Maclaurin and Jacobi ellipsoids, the stability of the form of which was investigated by Lyapunov himself, has not been investigated previously in the literature.  相似文献
