We derive strong coupling expansions for the mass gap in euclidean lattice gauge theories in any space-time dimension. For gauge groups SU(2), SU(3), Z2 and Z3 the series are calculated up to order g?16. They are used to get rough estimates for the lowest glueball mass in continuum SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories, assuming a sudden crossover from strong to weak coupling behaviour in the lattice theory.  相似文献

The small-volume expansion of the low-lying glueball states for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theory, coupled to massless fermions with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions, is determined. For SU(3) with periodic boundary conditions the vacuum is eightfold degenerate and breaks part of the cubic group spontaneously. In all cases the scalar-to-tensor mass ratio mA1++/mE++ is 1.1 to 1.3 as in the pure-gauge case. We also discuss chiral symmetry.  相似文献

Using Monte Carlo techniques on a four-dimensional space-time lattice, we study SU(N)/ZN gauge theories for N = 3, 4, 5 and 6. We find first-order phase transitions at critical inverse temperatures of βc = 6.40, 12.0, 19.5 and 32.0 and SU(3)/Z3,SU(4)/Z4,SU(5)/Z5and SU (6)Z6, respectively.  相似文献

We have calculated the glueball masses of various spins and parities in SU(3) gauge theory. Our first results give mM(0++)=(3.6±0.2)Λmom, mE(0++)=(4.3±0.3)Λmom, m(0?+)=(7.2?0.9+1.6)Λmom, mM(2++)=(8.1±1.1)Λmom and mE(2++)=(8.3?1.0+1.6)Λmom as well as information on the glueball wave functions.  相似文献

The experimental data on the neutral current couplings are used to derive lower bounds on the mass of ZE, the extra neutral gauge boson appearing in the minimal ‘beyond the standard model’ scenario favoured in superstring compactifications. This is based on the gauge group SU(3)c×SU(2)L×U(1)Y×U(1)E. Taking sin2θw=0.229, mW=80.76 GeV and mZ=91.59 GeV it is found that the mixing angle θ between Z and ZE must satisfy −0.136<sin θ<−0.007 corresponding to mZE>152 GeV or, assuming E6 unification mZE>155 GeV.  相似文献

By embedding the chiral current-mixing gauge theories in the SU(2)L ? SU(2)R generalized σ model, it is shown that the correct sign and magnitude for π0γγ decay, as well as the SU(3) relation of π0, η, η' → γγ decays can be obtained within the framework of SU(2) ? U(1) gauge theories of weak and electromagnetic interactions.  相似文献

We present results of high temperature expansions up to order g?24 for the vortex free energy respectively string tension in pure lattice gauge theories with gauge groups SU(2) and Z2 in 3 and 4 dimensions. For SU(2) in 4 dimensions the result is compared with Monte Carlo calculations of Creutz and is in good agreement. An intermediate coupling region is seen, where the string tension smoothly interpolates between strong coupling and weak coupling behaviour.  相似文献

It is shown that local gauge transformations preserve the integrability of one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg chains. Abelian U(1) gauge transformations associated to z-rotations appear in the XXZ model which is worked out in detail. The exact energy spectrum derived by the Bethe ansatz turns out to be gauge-invariant whereas the eigenvectors are explicitly gauge-dependent. Isotropic XXX chains exhibit SU(2) ⊗ Z2 gauge invariance properties and anisotropic XYZ chains possess discrete Z2 ⊗ Z2 gauge invariance.  相似文献

In a multiply connected manifold, M4⊗S3/Z2, we compute at one-loop level the gauge symmetry breaking due to Wilson loops. For an SU(3) model without matter fields a non-trivial vacuum, which breaks the gauge symmetry has lower energy.  相似文献

A unified treatment of 0?+, 0++, 1?-, 2++ meson multiplets is provided, in the SU(4) and SU(8) scheme. The overall consistence is excellent and the existence of a new 1?- resonance φc(2.835) is predicted.  相似文献

Electron spectra produced by equal velocity (0.75 MeV/amu) H+, H+2, He+ and He ++ ions are shown. Screening effects are observed for He+ ions but not for H+2. He++ cross sections scale like Z2 = 4 when compared to H+ cross sections.  相似文献

A possible explanation is proposed for the crossover from strong to weak coupling region in SU(N) lattice gauge theories. We predict the pointswhere the crossover takes place for all SU(N)M: For example, g2 ≈ 2.0 for SU(2), g2 ≈ 1.0 for SU(3) and limN→∞Ng2(SU(N) ≈ 2.0.  相似文献

We review the physics of quarks and leptons within the framework of gauge theories for the weak and electromagnetic interactions. The Weinberg-Salam SU(2) × U(1) theory is used as a “reference point” but models based on larger gauge groups, especially SU(2)L × SU(2)R × U(1), are discussed. We distinguish among thre “generations” of fundamental fermions: The first generation (e?, νe, u, d), the second generation (μ?, νμ, c, s) and the third generation (τ?, ντ, t, b). For each generation we discuss the classification of all fermions, the charged and neutral weak currents, possible right-handed currents, parity and CP-violation, fermion masses and Cabibbo-like angles and related problems. We review theoretical ideas as well as experimental evidence, emphasizing open theoretical problems and possible experimental tests. The possibility of unifying the weak, electromagnetic and strong interactions in a grand unification scheme is reviewed. The problems and their possible solutions are presented, generation by generation, but a brief subject-index (following the table of contents) enables the interested reader to follow any specific topic throughout the three generations.  相似文献

Superstring theory in d = 10 dimensions after Calabi—Yau compactification yields a minimum low-energy gauge group SU(3)C × SU(2)L × U(1)Y × U(1)E. The low-energy theory includes particles with the quantum numbers of 27 representations of E6, each of which contains an extra neutrino νc conventionally called a “right-handed neutrino”. The contributions of ν and νc to through Z0 and ZE mixing is calculated. Small contributions are found of the new right-handed neutrino and of the superstring boson ZE to σ(e+e → γ + nothing).  相似文献

We discussZ 0-production in the processe ? +P → e ? +Z 0 +X in the context of the standard modelSU (3) C ×SU (2) L ×U (1) of the strong and electroweak interactions. Besides results for the total cross section and the differential cross section as a function of the parameters of the outgoing electron, we present results for the energy spectrum and the angular distribution of the producedZ 0, for energies available at HERA in the near future. We find that the energy and angular distributions forZ 0-production are strongly peaked, which will permit a clear identification of the producedZ 0.  相似文献

We study the width of the confining string between static quarks in abelian lattice gauge theories using strong coupling expansions. We consider gauge groups Zn and U(1) in 3 and 4 dimensions. This extends previous work with Lüscher, where SU(2) and Z2 were studied. In ν = 3 dimensions we find evidence for a roughening transition. It is characterized by a divergence of the string width for an infinitely far separated quark-antiquark pair, while the string tension remains non-zero. In ν = 4 dimensions for the abelian groups we do not have evidence for a roughening transition away from a phase transition.  相似文献

We investigate the hierarchy of gauge boson masses in the maximal grand unified theory by studying the renormalization group equations for the running coupling constants associated with the symmetry breaking of SU(16)viaSU(12) q×SU(4) l×U(1) |B|?|L| chain. Particular attention is given to the contribution of Higgs scalars to these equations. It is found that the intermediate mass scale ML, associated with right-handed gauge bosons could be as low as 10 3 GeV only for sin 2θ w(M L) as high as 0.265 with α s(M L)=0.13. In this chain of symmetry breaking, we have also examined the lowest unification mass that is allowed by the low-energy data for sin 2θ w(M L) and the assumed gauge hierarchy. This has been done in two cases; first for the case where SU(3) c is vectorial, second, for the case where SU(3) c is axial. In both cases the lowest unification mass scales were found to be 10 13, 10 11, 10 8 and 10 7 GeV for sin 2θ w(M L) = 0.22, 0.24, 0.26,and0.265 respectively with α s(M L) = 0.13. The implication of these low unification masses on baryon non-conserving processes is also discussed.  相似文献

Strong coupling expansions for the string tension and other quantities in lattice gauge theories are computed in arbitrary dimension for the groups Z3, U(1), SU(2), SU(3). This enables us to determine the location of the roughening transition, which seems to be group independent when measured in an appropriate variable. In four dimensions, the strong coupling expansion of string tension calculated up to fourteenth order for SU(2), and twelfth order for SU(3) agrees nicely with Monte Carlo data up to the roughening point.  相似文献

For SU(2) gauge fields over the 4-dimensional sphere with a finite number of points x1, x2, ..., and xN removed, there are gauge transformations which modify the topological charge concentrated at xj by adding nj, where n1, n2, …, and nN. are integers such that ΣNj = 1nj = 0. However, the reduction modulo Z of the topological charge at a point is well defined, being given in terms of the secondary characteristic classes of Chern and Simons, except when the topological charge is indeterminate.  相似文献
