Complexation of Oleuropein and trans-Cinnamic Acid with Cyclodextrins

The complexation of oleuropein and trans-cinnamic acid with -, -, and -cyclodextrin has been studied in aqueous model systems by light scaterring. The influence of various parameters (pH, concentration, reaction time, nature of cyclodextrin) has been thoroughly examined. The formation of binary (1:1) inclusion complexes and the higher inclusion ability of -CD for both compounds has been indicated. Trans-cinnamic acid was extracted from olive olive oil following its complexation with -CD at satisfactory recovery levels.

The synthesis of a new compound with a sanddalwood odour is described. The synthesis of the lactone1 has been designed by molecular considerations: a bicyclus with a side chain containing 5–7 carbon atoms and an oxygene containing osmophoric group. One route to synthesize1 leads from the ketone3 via theMannich base4 to the -ketonitrile6 which after hydrolysis to the -keto acid7 and reduction of the latter cyclises spontaneously to1. A shorter route starts from the -bromoketone13 which could be transformed by malonic ester synthesis into7. Other synthetic routes, e.g. cyanoethylation to the homologous -lactone16 aldol condensation, alkylation, carboxymethylation and carboxyethylation of3 failed as well as the preparation of the oxazoline protected 3-bromopropionic acid for aGrignard synthesis with3. 1 exhibits a sweet, warm odour, of sandalwood with an interesting note of cedarwood.

Studies of the energy spectrum of α, ω- substituted polymethine chains. II. Polymethine chains with odd number of methine groups

The analysis of the experimental data for the energy of the longest wavelength optical transitions _n,opt of substituted polymethines X (CH)_2n+1 X shows that in the asymptotic case (n) _,opt does not tend to zero, as it follows from the empirically established correlations, but has a finite, non-zero value. It is shown that the energy gap of odd polymethines is the same as that of the even polymethines - the polyenes (E 2 eV). The substituents (X N, O, B) are responsible for the appearance of levels in the gap. These, depending on the substituent character, are vacant (X B) or occupied (X N, O). The transition from or to such a level determines the longest wavelength optical transition energy of polymethines.     

Conformational Heterogeneity of a Tripeptide in the Solid State and in Solution: Characterization of a γ-Turn Containing Incipient Hairpin in Solution

A terminally blocked tripeptide Boc--Ala-Aib--Ala-OMe 1 with noncoded amino acids forms a novel type of hairpin structure containing a -turn instead of a conventional -turn in the central loop region in solution. This new type structural motif was characterized by NMR and restraint molecular dynamics simulation study. In the solid state peptide 1 adopts an extended backbone conformation and self-assembles to form supramolecular -sheet.     

Synthesis and sorption properties of new hybrid chelating sorbents with β-alanine functional groups

A series of -aminopropylsilylated sorbents was obtained from different oxide supports (silica gels, silica fillers, macroporous glasses, alumina) and by the direct synthesis (hydrolytic polycondensation of tetraalkoxysilanes with -aminopropyltriethoxysilane). The highest degree of immobilization was achieved for silicas, while the most convenient solvent was methanol. Sorbents with -alanine functional groups were obtained by the subsequent reaction with acrylic acid. The degree of -carboxyethylation was 1.3–1.9, and the highest content of functional groups (v_COOH = 3.23 mmol g^–1) was achieved for carboxyethylated xero gel synthesized by the copolycondensation of tetraethoxysilane with -aminopropyltriethoxysilane. The sorbents containing -alanine possess a higher selectivity of Cu²⁺ ion sorption than the initial -aminopropylsilylated sorbents.__________Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Influence of the Structure of Steroid Hormones on Their Association with Cyclodextrins: A High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Study

The association constants of fourteen steroid hormones with - and -cyclodextrin were measured in methanol-water (20 : 80 v/v) at 35 °C using the chromatographic Hummel-Dreyer method. It was found that the greatest influence on the association constants is the structural features of ring A of these compounds but the substituents of ring D also alter the complex stability to an appreciable degree. The measured association constants were considerably greater than the corresponding values measured previously in the medium containing more methanol (45 instead of 20%).     

Donor-acceptor interaction of p,p′-dimethoxystilbene with α,β-dinitrostilbene

A study was carried out on the interactions of the Z and E forms of the indicated stilbenes in all four possible combinations. “Blue silver”: transformation of clusters and metal coagulation

The formation and transformations of blue silver ( _max 700 nm) during -irradiation of a weakly alkaline (pH 9) aqueous solution containing AgClO₄, polyacrylic acid (PAA), and isopropanol were studied. We believe that blue silver is a linear silver cluster stabilized on a polymeric molecule. During radiation-chemical reduction the cluster is transformed into new clusters ( _max = 365 and 460 nm). When all of the Ag⁺ ions present in the solution have been reduced, clusters coalesce and a new phase,i.e., colloidal silver particles, forms. Charge-transfer complexes betweenp-toluidine and iodine in solution: A kinetic study

The kinetics of charge-transfer interaction betweenp-toluidine and iodine in methylene chloride was investigated in depth. Thethermal process of formation of theinner complex was found to proceed to an equilibrium. Thephotochemical process follows a different reaction coordinate, going through the formation of an exciplex between the excitedouter complex and the amine ground state. In both cases the same ionic complex (Am ₂I⁺I ₃ ^– , whereAm stands forp-toluidine) was detected as the final product.

Kinetische Untersuchung der Charge-Transfer-Komplexe zwischenp-Toluidin und Jod

Zusammenfassung Die Kinetik der Charge-Transfer-Wechselwirkung zwischenp-Toluidin und Jod in Methylenchlorid wurde ausführlich untersucht. Derthermische Prozeß, der zur Bildung desinner-Komplexes führt, geht bis zu einem Gleichgewicht. Derphotochemische Prozeß folgt einer unterschiedlichen Reaktionskoordinate und verläuft über die Bildung eines Exziplexes zwischen dem angeregtenouter-Komplex und dem Amin im Grundzustand. In beiden Fällen wurde derselbe ionische Komplex (Am ₂I⁺I ₃ ^– , wobeiAm fürp-Toluidin steht) als Endprodukt festgestellt.

     

A non-empirical molecular orbital study on the relative stabilities of adenine and guanine tautomers

The relative stabilities of a series of adenine and guanine tautomers have been calculated using anab initio Hartree-Fock-Roothaan SCF MO method. The calculated relative stabilities agree in general with the results of earlier semiempirical studies. According to the present study, tautomeric forms with regular Kekulé structure for the six-membered purine ring are the most stable. The amine-imine tautomerization of purine bases is not likely to be responsible for spontaneous mutations in DNA.
