As a synopsis, a generalization and an improvement of various results already known about the strictional properties of ruled surfaces E n (especially in the casen=3) the author demonstrates a uniform geometrical way of defining and uniquely obtaining thestriction point S(u) and theparameter of distribution d(u) of a generatore(u) under the minimal assumptions thate(u)E n (n2) be noncylindrical andr1. Other methods of obtainingS(u) andd(u) are discussed in comparison, and special strictional properties ofskew ruled surfaces E n are proved.

We examine the efficiency of PL path following algorithms in followingF T -1 (0), whereF T is the PL approximation, induced by the simplicial triangulationT, to a mapf: n n-1. In particular, we consider the problem of determining an upper bound on the expected number of pivots made per unit length off –1(0) that is approximated. We show that if the sizes of the simplices ofT are sufficiently small, where sufficiently small is an explicitly given quantity dependent on measurements of how nicef is, then the average directional density ofT, as introduced by Todd, really does give a good approximation to the expected number of pivots made, confirming what researchers have believed on intuitive grounds for a decade. Because what constitutes sufficiently small is a precisely given quantity, i.e., non-asymptotic, we are able to provide some rigorous justification for the claim that the expected number of pivots grows only polynomially inn, the number of variables.Several other issues are also examined.Research supported by an NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. We consider a homogeneous pseudodifferential equation on a cylinderC=×X over a smooth compact closed manifoldX whose symbol extends to a meromorphic function on the complex plane with values in the algebra of pseudodifferential operators overX. When assuming the symbol to be independent on the variablet , we show an explicit formula for solutions of the equation. Namely, to each non-bijectivity point of the symbol in the complex plane there corresponds a finite-dimensional space of solutions, every solution being the residue of a meromorphic form manufactured from the inverse symbol. In particular, for differential equations we recover Euler's theorem on the exponential solutions. Our setting is model for the analysis on manifolds with conical points sinceC can be thought of as a stretched manifold with conical points att=– andt=. When compared with the general theory, our approach is constructive while highlighting all the features of this latter.  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact -compact group with right Haar measure m and a regular probability measure on G. We say that is weakly mixing if for all gL (G) and all fL 1(G) with fdm=0 we have n –1 n k=1| k *f,g|0. We show that is weakly mixing if and only if is ergodic and strictly aperiodic. In this paper, we consider the problem: –u=N(N–2)u p– , u>0 on ; u=0 on , where is a smooth and bounded domain inR N, N3, p= , and >0. We prove a conjecture of H. Brezis and L.A. Peletier about the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of this problem which are minimizing for the Sobolev inequality as goes to zero. In its simplest form the Strong Maximum Principle says that a nonnegative superharmonic continuous function in a domain n ,n 1, is in fact positive everywhere. Here we prove that the same conclusion is true for the weak solutions of – u + (u) = f with a nondecreasing function ,(0)=0, andf0 a.e. in if and only if the integral((s)s) –1/2 ds diverges ats=0+. We extend the result to more general equations, in particular to – p u + (u) =f where p (u) = div(|Du| p-2 Du), 1 <p < . We study the limiting behavior of the weighted central paths{(x(), s())} > 0 in linear programming at both = 0 and = . This paper examines nonlinear parabolic initial-boundary value problems with a discontinuous forcing term, which is locally of bounded variation. Assuming that there exist an upper solution and a lower solution , we prove the existence of a maximal and of a minimal solution within the order interval [,] L P (P xZ). A parallel theory is developed in the presence of densities. We give a new2 index theorem for the basic example of Toeplitz operators on the circle. The joint torsion, a non zero complex valued analytic index, of a pair of Fredholm Toeplitz operatorsT andT withH symbols is computed by residues in the disk, and is determined by a monodromy integral which specifies the isomorphism class of a flat line bundle on the circle. When the symbols and are rational a product of joint torsions identifies the isomorphism class of the bundle inH 1 (S 1,C *), and the identification extends by rational approximation to the case of smooth symbols defined on the circle.Partially supported by National Science Foundation grants to both authors.  相似文献
