A stress resultant constitutive law in rate form is constructed for power-law hardening materials. The change of plate thickness is considered in the constitutive law. The elastic-plastic behavior of a plate element based on the stress resultant constitutive law under uniaxial combined tension and bending is determined under a limited number of nonproportional and unloading paths. The results based on the stress resultant constitutive law and the through-the-thickness integration method are compared within the context of both the small-strain and finite deformation approaches. The results indicate that the selection of the normalized equivalent stress resultant and the corresponding work-conjugate normalized equivalent generalized strain is appropriate for describing the hardening behavior in the stress resultant space. However, the hardening rule in a power law form must be modified for low hardening materials at large plastic deformation when finite deformation effects are considered.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the problem of the determination of the in-plane behavior of masonry material. The masonry is considered as a composite material composed by a regular distribution of blocks connected by horizontal and vertical mortar joints. The overall constitutive relationships of the regular masonry are derived by a rational micromechanical and homogenization procedure. Linear elastic constitutive relationship is considered for the blocks, while a new special nonlinear constitutive law is proposed for the mortar joints. In particular, a mortar constitutive law, which accounts for the coupling of the damage and friction phenomena occurring during the loading history, is proposed; the developed model is based on an original micromechanical analysis of the damage process of the mortar joint. Then, an effective nonlinear homogenization procedure, representing the main novelty of the paper, is proposed; it is based on the transformation field analysis, using the technique of the superposition of the effects and the finite element method. The presented methodology is implemented in a numerical code. Finally, numerical applications are performed in order to assess the performances of the proposed procedure in reproducing the mechanical behavior of masonry material.  相似文献

Viscoelasticity characterizes the most important mechanical behavior of elastomers. Understanding the viscoelasticity, especially finite strain viscoelasticity, of elastomers is the key for continuation of their dedicated use in industrial applications. In this work, we present a mechanistic and physics-based constitutive model to describe and design the finite strain viscoelastic behavior of elastomers. Mathematically, the viscoelasticity of elastomers has been decomposed into hyperelastic and viscous parts, which are attributed to the nonlinear deformation of the cross-linked polymer network and the diffusion of free chains, respectively. The hyperelastic deformation of a cross-linked polymer network is governed by the cross-linking density, the molecular weight of the polymer strands between cross-linkages, and the amount of entanglements between different chains, which we observe through large scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Moreover, a recently developed non-affine network model (Davidson and Goulbourne, 2013) is confirmed in the current work to be able to capture these key physical mechanisms using MD simulation. The energy dissipation during a loading and unloading process of elastomers is governed by the diffusion of free chains, which can be understood through their reptation dynamics. The viscous stress can be formulated using the classical tube model (Doi and Edwards, 1986); however, it cannot be used to capture the energy dissipation during finite deformation. By considering the tube deformation during this process, as observed from the MD simulations, we propose a modified tube model to account for the finite deformation behavior of free chains. Combing the non-affine network model for hyperelasticity and modified tube model for viscosity, both understood by molecular simulations, we develop a mechanism-based constitutive model for finite strain viscoelasticity of elastomers. All the parameters in the proposed constitutive model have physical meanings, which are signatures of polymer chemistry, physics or dynamics. Therefore, parametric materials design concepts can be easily gleaned from the model, which is also demonstrated in this study. The finite strain viscoelasticity obtained from our simulations agrees qualitatively with experimental data on both un-vulcanized and vulcanized rubbers, which captures the effects of cross-linking density, the molecular weight of the polymer chain and the strain rate.  相似文献

Continuous loading and unloading experiments are performed at different strain rates to characterize the large deformation behavior of polyurea under compressive loading. In addition, uniaxial compression tests are carried out with multistep strain history profiles. The analysis of the experimental data shows that the concept of equilibrium path may not be applied to polyurea. This finding implies that viscoelastic constitutive models of the Zener type are no suitable for the modeling of the rate dependent behavior of polyurea. A new constitutive model is developed based on a rheological model composed of two Maxwell elements. The soft rubbery response is represented by a Gent spring while nonlinear viscous evolution equations are proposed to describe the time-dependent material response. The eight material model parameters are identified for polyurea and used to predict the experimentally-measured stress-strain curves for various loading and unloading histories. The model provides a good prediction of the response under monotonic loading over wide range of strain rates, while it overestimates the stiffness during unloading. Furthermore, the model predictions of the material relaxation and viscous dissipation during a loading-unloading cycle agree well with the experiments.  相似文献

Constitutive modeling of ice in the high strain rate regime   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of the present work is to propose a constitutive model for ice by considering the influence of important parameters such as strain rate dependence and pressure sensitivity on the response of the material. In this regard, the constitutive model proposed by Carney et al. (2006) is considered as a starting basis and subsequently modified to incorporate the effect of brittle cracking within a continuum damage mechanics framework. The damage is taken to occur in the form of distributed cracking within the material during impact which is consistent with experimental observations. At the point of failure, the material is assumed to be fluid-like with deviatoric stress almost dropping down to zero. The constitutive model is implemented in a general purpose finite element code using an explicit formulation. Several single element tests under uniaxial tension and compression, as well as biaxial loading are conducted in order to understand the performance of the model. Few large size simulations are also performed to understand the capability of the model to predict brittle damage evolution in un-notched and notched three point bend specimens. The proposed model predicts lower strength under tensile loading as compared to compressive loading which is in tune with experimental observations. Further the model also asserts the strain rate dependency of the strength behavior under both compressive as well as tensile loading, which also corroborates well with experimental results.  相似文献

The response of a polymer (polytetrafluoroethylene) to quasi-static and dynamic loading is determined and modeled. The polytetrafluoroethylene is extremely ductile and highly nonlinear in elastic as well as plastic behaviors including elastic unloading. Constitutive model developed earlier by Khan, Huang and Liang (KHL) is extended to include the responses of polymeric materials. The strain rate hardening, creep, and relaxation behaviors of polytetrafluoroethylene were determined through extensive experimental study. Based on the observation that both viscoelastic and viscoplastic deformation of polytetrafluoroethylene are time dependent and nonlinear, a phenomenalogical viscoelasto–plastic constitutive model is presented by a series connection of a viscoelastic deformation module (represented by three elements standard solid spring dashpot model), and a viscoplastic deformation module represented by KHL model. The KHL module is affected only when the stress exceeds the initial yield stress. The comparison between the predictions from the extended model and experimental data for uniaxial static and dynamic compression, creep and relaxation demonstrate that the proposed constitutive model is able to represent the observed time dependent mechanical behavior of polytetrafluoroethylene polytetrafluoroethylene qualitatively and quantitatively.  相似文献

The effects of strain rate and temperature on the tension stress–strain responses of polycarbonate are experimentally investigated over a wide range of strain rates (0.001–1700 s−1) and temperatures (0–120 °C). A modified split Hopkinson tension bar is used for high-rate uniaxial tension tests. Experimental results indicate that the stress–strain responses of polycarbonate at high strain rates exhibit the nonlinear characteristics including the obvious yielding and strain softening. The tension behavior is strongly dependent on the strain rate and temperature. The values of yield stress and strain at yield present a dramatic increase at higher strain rates and decrease with the increase in temperature. Moreover, there exists a significant rate-sensitivity transition in the polycarbonate tension yield behavior. Based on the experimental investigation, a physically based three-dimensional elastoplastic constitutive model for the finite deformation of glassy polymers is used to characterize the rate-temperature dependent yield and post-yield behavior of polycarbonate when subjected to tension loading. The model results are shown close to the experimental data within the investigated strain-rate and temperature ranges.  相似文献

The silica-filled rubber material presented in this paper exhibits nonlinear elasticity, nonlinear rate dependence and stress-softening effect under cyclic loading. In order to model the material behavior in a finite element code, the internal state variable concept is considered for finite deformation viscoelasticity. Moreover, the so-called Mullins' effect is taken into account by using a discontinuous damage concept. A total Lagrangian formulation with incompressibility constraint is adopted in the finite element code. The constitutive equations with their optimized set of parameters are validated by comparing the simulated results with experimental data. This result is very useful for the fatigue lifetime analysis of the investigated silica-filled rubber material.  相似文献

A temperature-dependent viscodamage model is proposed and coupled to the temperature-dependent Schapery’s nonlinear viscoelasticity and the temperature-dependent Perzyna’s viscoplasticity constitutive model presented in Abu Al-Rub et al., 2009, Huang et al., in press in order to model the nonlinear constitutive behavior of asphalt mixes. The thermo-viscodamage model is formulated to be a function of temperature, total effective strain, and the damage driving force which is expressed in terms of the stress invariants of the effective stress in the undamaged configuration. This expression for the damage force allows for the distinction between the influence of compression and extension loading conditions on damage nucleation and growth. A systematic procedure for obtaining the thermo-viscodamage model parameters using creep test data at different stress levels and different temperatures is presented. The recursive-iterative and radial return algorithms are used for the numerical implementation of the nonlinear viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity models, respectively, whereas the viscodamage model is implemented using the effective (undamaged) configuration concept. Numerical algorithms are implemented in the well-known finite element code Abaqus via the user material subroutine UMAT. The model is then calibrated and verified by comparing the model predictions with experimental data that include creep-recovery, creep, and uniaxial constant strain rate tests over a range of temperatures, stress levels, and strain rates. It is shown that the presented constitutive model is capable of predicting the nonlinear behavior of asphaltic mixes under different loading conditions.  相似文献

A robust physically consistent three-dimensional constitutive model is developed to describe the finite mechanical response of amorphous polymers over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates, including the rubbery region and for impact loading rates. This thermomechanical model is based on an elastic–viscoplastic rheological approach, wherein the effects of temperature, strain rate, and hydrostatic pressure are accounted for. Intramolecular, as well as intermolecular, interactions under large elastic–inelastic behavior are considered for the mechanisms of deformation and hardening. For a wide range of temperatures and strain rates, our simulated results for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC) are in good agreement with experimental observations.  相似文献

A method for predicting the response of strain-rate sensitive structures under dynamic loading is developed. It is based on a finite difference method, the incremental theory of plasticity, and an elastic work-hardening viscoplastic material idealization. The strain-rate effect, loading and unloading conditions, and wave interactions are automatically accounted for, and adjusted if necessary, as the deformation proceeds. No iteration is required even if the field equations are nonlinear (e.g. non-linear constitutive equations, large deformation, or complicated geometry). We solve as an example the small deflection of a finite bar with a concentrated tip mass. The accuracy is comparable to that obtained by the well-known method of characteristics, a powerful tool for solving elastic-viscoplastic wave problems but which is restricted to small deflections and simple geometry. Because of the form of the constitutive relation selected (elastic work-hardening visco-plastic), several important new features of the dynamics response are brought out. These features are not revealed when simpler, computationally-convenient constitutive relations, such as rigid ideal-viscoplastic, rigid work-hardening viscoplastic and elastic ideal-viscoplastic are used.  相似文献

We develop a constitutive model of paper's in-plane biaxial tensile response accounting for the elastic–plastic hardening behavior, and its orthotropic character. The latter aspect is motivated by machine-made papers, which, in contrast to isotropic laboratory handsheets, are strongly oriented. We focus on modeling paper's response under monotonic loading, this restriction allowing us to treat the elastic-plastic response as a physically nonlinear elastic one. A strain energy function of a hyperbolic tangent form is developed so as to fit the entire range of biaxial and uniaxial experiments on a commercial grade paper. This function may then be introduced as the free energy function into a model based on thermomechanics with internal variables.  相似文献

An isotropic three-dimensional nonlinear viscoelastic model is developed to simulate the time-dependent behavior of passive skeletal muscle. The development of the model is stimulated by experimental data that characterize the response during simple uniaxial stress cyclic loading and unloading. Of particular interest is the rate-dependent response, the recovery of muscle properties from the preconditioned to the unconditioned state and stress relaxation at constant stretch during loading and unloading. The model considers the material to be a composite of a nonlinear hyperelastic component in parallel with a nonlinear dissipative component. The strain energy and the corresponding stress measures are separated additively into hyperelastic and dissipative parts. In contrast to standard nonlinear inelastic models, here the dissipative component is modeled using an evolution equation that combines rate-independent and rate-dependent responses smoothly with no finite elastic range. Large deformation evolution equations for the distortional deformations in the elastic and in the dissipative component are presented. A robust, strongly objective numerical integration algorithm is used to model rate-dependent and rate-independent inelastic responses. The constitutive formulation is specialized to simulate the experimental data. The nonlinear viscoelastic model accurately represents the time-dependent passive response of skeletal muscle.  相似文献

A comprehensive study on the response of a nanocrystalline iron and copper mixture (80% Fe and 20% Cu) to quasi-static and dynamic loading is performed. The constitutive model developed earlier by Khan, Huang & Liang (KHL) is extended to include the responses of nanocrystalline metallic materials. The strain rate and grain size dependent behaviors of porous nanocrystalline iron-copper mixture were determined experimentally for both static and dynamic loading. A viscoplastic model is formulated by associating the modified KHL model (representing the fully dense matrix behavior), and Gurson's plastic potential which provides the yield criteria for porous material. Simulations of uniaxial compressive deformations of iron-copper mixture with different initial porosity, grain size and at a wide range of strain rate (10−4 to 103 s−1) are made. The numerical results correlate well with the experimental observations.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimental work on a 1: 100 scaled model of a miniature sea-star tension leg platform (TLP) in a wave flume. Two different numerical models are developed: finite element model (FEM) based on the Morison equation and boundary element model (BEM) based on a 3D diffraction/radiation theory. The developed codes are used to calculate hydrodynamic forces and related coefficients. The nonlinear hull/tendon coupled dynamic equation of a mini seastar TLP is solved by using a modified Euler method (MEM). The results of numerical modeling of the motion response behavior of the platform in different degrees of freedom are compared with experimental data. This comparison shows good agreement between the results. Furthermore, this modeling reveals that the first-order diffraction method and quasi-static tendon modeling are sufficient in general for the hydrodynamic analysis of the sea-star TLP.  相似文献

A constitutive theory is developed for shape memory polymers. It is to describe the thermomechanical properties of such materials under large deformations. The theory is based on the idea, which is developed in the work of Liu et al. [2006. Thermomechanics of shape memory polymers: uniaxial experiments and constitutive modelling. Int. J. Plasticity 22, 279-313], that the coexisting active and frozen phases of the polymer and the transitions between them provide the underlying mechanisms for strain storage and recovery during a shape memory cycle. General constitutive functions for nonlinear thermoelastic materials are used for the active and frozen phases. Also used is an internal state variable which describes the volume fraction of the frozen phase. The material behavior of history dependence in the frozen phase is captured by using the concept of frozen reference configuration. The relation between the overall deformation and the stress is derived by integration of the constitutive equations of the coexisting phases. As a special case of the nonlinear constitutive model, a neo-Hookean type constitutive function for each phase is considered. The material behaviors in a shape memory cycle under uniaxial loading are examined. A linear constitutive model is derived from the nonlinear theory by considering small deformations. The predictions of this model are compared with experimental measurements.  相似文献
