In this study, we have developed a new method to generate a multi-directional pore network for representing a porous medium. The method is based on a regular cubic lattice network, which has two elements: pore bodies located at the regular lattice points and pore throats connecting the pore bodies. One of the main features of our network is that pore throats can be oriented in 13 different directions, allowing a maximum coordination number of 26 that is possible in a regular lattice in 3D space. The coordination number of pore bodies ranges from 0 to 26, with a pre-specified average value for the whole network. We have applied this method to reconstruct real sandstone and granular sand samples through utilizing information on their coordination number distributions. Good agreement was found between simulation results and observation data on coordination number distribution and other network properties, such as number of pore bodies and pore throats and average coordination number. Our method can be especially useful in studying the effect of structure and coordination number distribution of pore networks on transport and multiphase flow in porous media systems.  相似文献

Understanding the role of shuttle vibrations in pore fluid distribution is an essential task in the exploration of plant growth in root modules aboard space flights. Results from experimental investigations are reported in this paper on the distribution of immiscible fluid phases in glass beads under vibrations. Hexadecane, a petroleum compound immiscible with and lighter than water, was used in the experiments. The higher freezing point of Hexadecane (18 °C) allowed the solidification of the entrapped blobs in the presence of water in porous media, so that their size distribution can be obtained. van Genuchten function, commonly used to express moisture retention curves, is found to be an adequate fit for blob size distribution at residual saturation. The effect of vibrations on the fate (mobilization, stranding, or breakup) of a solitary ganglion in porous media was studied using a network model. A mobility criterion considering viscous, gravity, and capillary forces was developed to determine the fate of a solitary ganglion in a porous medium. It is concluded that the effect of vibrations is to increase the likelihood of breakup and mobilization of blobs entrapped in porous media at residual saturation. The pore fluid distributions after vibrations are less uniform than those before vibrations.  相似文献

Network Modeling of Non-Darcy Flow Through Porous Media   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Darcy's law is inadequate for describing high-velocity gas flow in porous media, which occurs in the near well-bore region of high capacity gas and condensate reservoirs. This study is directed at understanding the non-Darcy flow behavior. A pore-level network model has been developed to describe high velocity flow. The inputs to the model are pore size distributions and network coordination numbers. The outputs are permeability, non-Darcy coefficient, tortuousity and porosity. The additional pressure gradient term is found to be proportional to the square of the velocity in accordance with the Forchheimer's equation. The correlation between the non-Darcy coefficient and other flow properties (the permeability, the porosity and the tortuousity) is found to depend on the morphological parameters being changed. General correlations are derived between these flow properties.  相似文献

In this work, a two-phase film-flow model in a hygroscopic capillary tube is developed and extended to describe the two-phase capillary viscous transport in a network of parallel capillary tubes in terms of relative permeabilities. This film-flow approach is further considered to predict the longitudinal moisture transport in oak wood during drying. Numerical results obtained from this prediction are compared with data of convective drying experiments performed on samples of this wood. The comparison seems to confirm the physical relevance of a film-flow model to correctly represent the moisture transfer until the hygroscopic regime is reached.  相似文献

Quasi-static rule-based network models used to calculate capillary dominated multi-phase transport properties in porous media employ equilibrium fluid saturation distributions which assume that pores are fully filled with a single bulk fluid with other fluids present only as wetting and/or spreading films. We show that for drainage dominated three-phase displacements in which a non-wetting fluid (gas) displaces a trapped intermediate fluid (residual oil) in the presence of a mobile wetting fluid (water) this assumption distorts the dynamics of three-phase displacements and results in significant volume errors for the intermediate fluid and erroneous calculations of intermediate fluid residual saturations, relative permeabilities and recoveries. The volume errors are associated with the double drainage mechanism which is responsible for the mobilization of waterflood residual oil. A simple modification of the double drainage mechanism is proposed which allows the presence of a relatively small number of partially filled pores and removes the oil volume errors.  相似文献

The objective of this work is to evaluate the prediction accuracy of network modeling to calculate transport properties of porous media based on the interpretation of mercury invasion capillary pressure curves only. A pore-scale modeling approach is used to model the multi-phase flow and calculate gas/oil relative permeability curves. The characteristics of the 3-D pore-network are defined with the requirement that the network model satisfactorily reproduces the capillary pressure curve (Pc curve), the porosity and the permeability. A sensitivity study on the effect of the input parameters on the prediction of capillary pressure and gas/oil relative permeability curves is presented. The simulations show that different input parameters can lead to similarly good reproductions of the experimental Pc, although the predicted relative permeabilities Kr are somewhat widespread. This means that the information derived from a mercury invasion Pc curve is not sufficient to characterize transport properties of a porous medium. The simulations indicate that more quantitative information on the wall roughness and the node/bond aspect ratio would be necessary to better constrain the problem. There is also evidence that in narrow pore size distributions pore body volume and pore throat radius are correlated while in broad pore size distributions they would be uncorrelated.  相似文献

In this article, we investigate two strategies for coarsening fractured geological models. The first approach, which generates grids that resolve the fractures, is referred to as explicit fracture-matrix separation (EFMS). The second approach is based on a non-uniform coarsening strategy introduced in Aarnes et al. (Adv Water Resour 30(11):2177–2193, 2007a). A series of two-phase flow simulations where the saturation is modeled on the respective coarse grids are performed. The accuracy of the resulting solutions is examined, and the robustness of the two strategies is assessed with respect to number of fractures, degree of coarsening, well locations, phase viscosities, and fracture permeability. The numerical results show that saturation solutions obtained on the non-uniform coarse grids are consistently more accurate than the corresponding saturation solutions obtained on the EFMS grids. The numerical results also reveal that it is much easier to tune the upscaling factor with the non-uniform coarsening approach.  相似文献

Fluid banks sometimes form during gravity-driven counter-current flow in certain natural reservoir processes. Prediction of flow performance in such systems depends on our understanding of the bank-formation process. Traditional modeling methods using a single capillary pressure curve based on a final saturation distribution have successfully simulated counter-current flow without fluid banks. However, it has been difficult to simulate counter-current flow with fluid banks. In this paper, we describe the successful saturation-history-dependent modeling of counter-current flow experiments that result in fluid banks. The method used to simulate the experiments takes into account hysteresis in capillary pressure and relative permeabilities. Each spatial element in the model follows a distinct trajectory on the capillary pressure versus saturation map, which consists of the capillary hysteresis loop and the associated capillary pressure scanning curves. The new modeling method successfully captured the formation of the fluid banks observed in the experiments, including their development with time. Results show that bank formation is favored where the pc-versus-saturation slope is low. Experiments documented in the literature that exhibited formation of fluid banks were also successfully simulated.  相似文献

Stress Generated During Drying of Saturated Porous Media   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The article is a contribution for the modelling of heat and mass transfers coupled to strain–stress equations during drying of deformable two-phase media. Both unidirectional and bidirectional configurations are examined. In order to compare the results, one assumes the material of a convectively dried clay slab in two configurations. Numerical calculations of the temperature, drying curves variations and the spatio-temporal distributions of moisture, temperature and drying induced stresses are evaluated. A significant difference was observed between the results obtained for both configurations particularly in intensity of the shear stress that caused cracking.  相似文献

The present paper is concerned with the stresses generated in a capillary-porous wall saturated from the bottom and dried naturally on its side planes. The upper cross-section of the wall is totally isolated and no heat and moisture transfer occurs through it, while the bottom one has an a priori determined temperature and moisture content. The vertical planes of the wall are surrounded by air having different temperatures and moisture contents on the left and the right sides. The problem is solved numerically based on a mechanistic model of drying earlier developed by the authors. The distributions of temperature, moisture content, and the drying induced stresses are determined. The variation of temperature on the wall left and right surfaces is analysed dependent on the surroundings temperature. The influence of boundary conditions on the stress distribution in the wall is discussed.  相似文献

Pore network analysis is used to investigate the effects of microscopic parameters of the pore structure such as pore geometry, pore-size distribution, pore space topology and fractal roughness porosity on resistivity index curves of strongly water-wet porous media. The pore structure is represented by a three-dimensional network of lamellar capillary tubes with fractal roughness features along their pore-walls. Oil-water drainage (conventional porous plate method) is simulated with a bond percolation-and-fractal roughness model without trapping of wetting fluid. The resistivity index, saturation exponent and capillary pressure are expressed as approximate functions of the pore network parameters by adopting some simplifying assumptions and using effective medium approximation, universal scaling laws of percolation theory and fractal geometry. Some new phenomenological models of resistivity index curves of porous media are derived. Finally, the eventual changes of resistivity index caused by the permanent entrapment of wetting fluid in the pore network are also studied.Resistivity index and saturation exponent are decreasing functions of the degree of correlation between pore volume and pore size as well as the width of the pore size distribution, whereas they are independent on the mean pore size. At low water saturations, the saturation exponent decreases or increases for pore systems of low or high fractal roughness porosity respectively, and obtains finite values only when the wetting fluid is not trapped in the pore network. The dependence of saturation exponent on water saturation weakens for strong correlation between pore volume and pore size, high network connectivity, medium pore-wall roughness porosity and medium width of the pore size distribution. The resistivity index can be described succesfully by generalized 3-parameter power functions of water saturation where the parameter values are related closely with the geometrical, topological and fractal properties of the pore structure.  相似文献

Effect of Efflorescence Formation on Drying Kinetics of Porous Media   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We study experimentally the evaporation of an aqueous NaCl solution with efflorescence formation in hydrophilic or hydrophobic two-dimensional model porous media. The efflorescence formation only marginally affects the invasion patterns but greatly modifies the drying kinetics compared to pure water. Two mechanisms are identified for explaining the impact of efflorescence formation on drying kinetics. It is shown that the efflorescence contributes to increase the evaporation rate compared to drying with pure water, a surprising result since the water activity is reduced in the presence of dissolved salt. This effect is explained by the efflorescence liquid capillary pumping effect associated with the porous nature of the efflorescence. Then, we identify a second phase where the efflorescence dries out and acts as a vapour diffusion barrier, leading to a dramatic reduction of evaporation rate.  相似文献

1-D Modeling of Hydrate Depressurization in Porous Media   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
A thermal, three-phase, one-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate two regimes of gas production from sediments containing methane hydrates by depressurization: the dissociation-controlled regime and the flow-controlled regime. A parameter namely dissociation-flow time-scale ratio, R, is defined and employed to identify the two regimes. The numerical model uses a finite-difference scheme; it is implicit in water and gas saturations, pressure and temperature, and explicit in hydrate saturation. The model shows that laboratory-scale experiments are often dissociation-controlled, but the field-scale processes are typically flow-controlled. Gas production from a linear reservoir is more sensitive to the heat transfer coefficient with the surrounding than the longitudinal heat conduction coefficient, in 1-D simulations. Gas production is not very sensitive to the well temperature boundary condition. This model can be used to fit laboratory-scale experimental data, but the dissociation rate constant, the multiphase flow parameters and the heat transfer parameters are uncertain and should be measured experimentally.  相似文献

When determining experimentally relative permeability and capillary pressure as a function of saturation, a self-consistent system of macroscopic equations, that includes Leverett's equation for capillary pressure, is required. In this technical note, such a system of equations, together with the conditions under which the equations apply, is formulated. With the aid of this system of equations, it is shown that, at the inlet boundary of a vertically oriented porous medium, static conditions pertain, and that potentials, because of the definition of potential, are equal in magnitude to pressures. Consequently, Leverett's equation is valid at the inlet boundary of the porous medium, provided cocurrent flow, or gravity-driven, countercurrent flow is taking place, and provided the porous medium is homogeneous. Moreover, it is demonstrated that Leverett's equation is valid for flow along the length of a vertically oriented porous medium, provided cocurrent flow, or gravity-driven, countercurrent flow is taking place, and provided the porous medium is homogeneous and there are no hydrodynamic effects. However, Leverett's equation is invalid for horizontal, steady-state, forced, countercurrent flow. When such flow is taking place, it is the sum of the pressures, and not the difference in pressures, which is related to capillary pressure.  相似文献

A model for the convective flow in a fluidsaturated porous medium containing a reactive component is considered. This component undergoes an exothermic reaction (modelled by a first order mechanism) on an impermeable bounding surface, the resulting heat released driving the convective flow. Large Rayleigh number flow near a stagnation point is treated in detail by first considering the steady states. Multiple solution branches and critical points arising from a hysteresis bifurcation are identified. The form that these solution branches take depends on whether or not the effects of reactant consumption are included. An initialvalue problem is then discussed. This shows that both the lower (slow reaction) and upper (fast reaction) solution branches are stable (and the ultimate state of the system). When the parameter values are such that there is no steady state, the solution develops a finitetime singularity, the nature of which is analysed.  相似文献

Quasi-static imbibition was simulated using random and correlated stochastic network models. Using the snap-off pore-scale displacement observed by Lernormand et al. (1983) the effects of many parameters on relative permeabilities and residual saturation reported in the literature were reproduced and explained. Increased relative permeabilities and decreased residual non-wetting phase saturation were the results of an increased contact angle (Li and Wardlaw, 1986b; Gauglitz and Radke, 1990; Blunt et al., 1992; Mogensen and Stenby, 1998) a decreased pore–throat aspect ratio, the presence of long-range pore-pore size correlations (Iaonnidis and Chatzis, 1993; Blunt, 1997a), or local pore–throat correlations (Jerauld and Salter, 1990; Iaonnidis and Chatzis, 1993). By modifying the level of snap-off, or its spatial distribution, these parameters varied the efficiency of the displacement patterns and ultimately affect relative permeabilities and residual saturations. Mani and Mohanty (1999) performed simulations on networks with infinite-ranged fractional Brownian motion (fBm) correlations and reported trends of relative permeabilities and residual saturations that were opposite to others’ results (Ioannidis and Chatzis, 1993; Blunt, 1997a). Applying a cut-off length to the fBm correlations reversed Mani and Mohanty’s trends to conform with the common observations.  相似文献
