Novel fullerene‐grafted poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT)‐based rod‐coil block copolymers have been synthesized. The regioregular P3HT rod block has been synthesized by a modified Grignard metathesis reaction (GRIM). An original in situ end‐capping reaction has been developed in order to convert the P3HT block into an efficient macro‐initiator for the nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) of the coil block. Controlled radical polymerization of the second poly(butylacrylate‐stat‐chloromethylstyrene) [P(BA‐stat‐CMS)] block has been done through various conditions leading to different coil block lengths. The final electron donor‐acceptor block copolymer has been obtained after C60 grafting in soft conditions. Copolymers have been characterized by 1H NMR and size exclusion chromatography. Optical characterizations, before and after C60 grafting, are reported.

Polymerizations of methyl methacrylate with (α‐diimine)nickel(II)/methylaluminoxane (MAO) and (pyridyl bis(imine))iron(II) and (pyridyl bis(imine))cobalt(II)/MAO are reported. Effects of structural variation of the ligand on the activities of catalysts and polymer microstructure are described. The catalyst systems gave syndio‐rich poly(methyl methacrylate). The α‐diimine system showed much higher activity than the pyridyl bis(imine) systems under similar polymerization conditions.

The oxidative addition of benzyl chloride to Ni(cod)2 in the presence of 1,4‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)acenaphthenediimine followed by chloride abstraction affords [(η3‐CH2C6H5)Ni(α‐diimine)][PF6] (α‐diimine = 1,4‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)acenaphthenediimine) in 70% yield. The complex is active in ethylene polymerization in the presence of methylaluminoxane and under mild reaction conditions. The polyethylenes obtained are highly branched, have very low densities, do not show Tm or measurable crystallinity and have molecular weights ranging from 80 × 103 to 290 × 103 g · mol−1.

The synthesis of poly(N‐vinylcarbazole)‐based block copolymers functionalized with rhenium diimine complexes or pendant terpyridine ligands is reported. The copolymers are synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and they exhibit interesting morphological properties as a result of the phase separation between different blocks. The rhenium complex polymer block may function as a photosensitizer, while the terpyridine‐containing polymer block can be used as the template for nanofabrication by selective deposition of zinc complexes.

In this Communication, the copolymerization of ethylene with a sterically hindered α‐olefin comonomer, γ‐trisubstituted 3,3‐dimethyl‐1‐butene (DMB), using a chain‐walking Pd‐diimine catalyst, [(ArNC(Me) (Me)CNAr)Pd(CH3)(NCMe)]SbF6 (Ar2,6‐(iPr)2C6H3) ( 1 ) is reported. In spite of its high steric bulkiness in the close proximity of the double bond, appreciable DMB incorporations (up to 3 mol‐%) are successfully achieved in the copolymers. The chain microstructure of the copolymers is elucidated, and the effect of DMB incorporation on polymer topology and thermal properties are examined. This work thus demonstrates the high capability of the Pd‐diimine catalyst in incorporating sterically encumbered α‐olefins.

Poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (P3HT‐b‐PBLG) rod–rod diblock copolymer was synthesized by a ring‐opening polymerization of γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate‐N‐carboxyanhydride using a benzylamine‐terminated regioregular P3HT macroinitiator. The opto‐electronic properties of the diblock copolymer have been investigated. The P3HT precursor and the P3HT‐b‐PBLG have similar UV–Vis spectra both in solution and solid state, indicating that the presence of PBLG block does not decrease the effective conjugation length of the semiconducting polythiophene segment. The copolymer displays solvatochromic behavior in THF/water mixtures. The morphology of the diblock copolymer depends upon the solvent used for film casting and annealing results in morphological changes for both films deposited from chloroform and trichlorobenzene.

Regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) has been successfully incorporated into a novel amphiphilic block copolymer. The amphiphilic nature of poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐block‐poly(acrylic acid) has been investigated using spectroscopic methods and has yielded solvatochromic behavior in several solvents of varying polarity. Evidence suggests that a supramolecular, long range ordering of block copolymer occurs in polar solvents, resulting in the formation of aggregates. Despite relatively large amounts of non‐conductive blocks, the poly(3‐hexylthiophene) diblock copolymer yields a high conductivity of 1 S · cm−1, and atomic force microscopy shows the formation of a highly organized nanofibrilar morphology in the solid state.

Commercially available 1,2‐PB was transformed into a well‐defined reactive intermediate by quantitative bromination. The brominated polymer was used as a polyfunctional macroinitiator for the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline to yield a water‐soluble brush polymer. Nucleophilic substitution of bromide by 1‐methyl imidazole resulted in the formation of polyelectrolyte copolymers consisting of mixed units of imidazolium, bromo, and double bond. These copolymers, which were soluble in water without forming aggregates, were used as stabilizers in the heterophase polymerization of styrene and were also studied for their ionic conducting properties.

Summary: The microwave (MW)‐assisted lipase‐catalyzed ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in boiling solvents was investigated for the first time. In case of boiling toluene or benzene the MW‐assisted reaction proceeded significantly slower compared to oil bath heating. On the other hand, using boiling diethyl ether as solvent, an increase of the polymerization rate due to MW irradiation was found. Yield, molecular weight measurements, and MALDI‐TOF analysis supported the results.

The establishment of advanced living/controlled polymerization protocols allows for engineering synthetic polymers in a precise fashion. Combining advanced living/controlled polymerization techniques with highly efficient coupling chemistries facilitates quantitative, modular, and orthogonal functionalization of synthetic polymer strands at their chain termini as well as side‐chain functionalization. The review highlights the current status of selected post‐functionalization techniques of polymers via orthogonal ligation chemistries, major characteristics of the specific transformation chemistry, as well as the characterization of the products.

tBu3 PPd(Ph)Br ( 1 )‐catalyzed Suzuki‐Miyaura coupling polymerization of 2‐(4‐hexyl‐5‐iodo‐2‐thienyl)‐4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolane ( 2 ) was investigated. Monomer 2 was polymerized with 1 at 0 °C in the presence of CsF and 18‐crown‐6 in THF containing a small amount of water to yield P3HT with a narrow molecular weight distribution and almost perfect head‐to‐tail regioregularity. The values increased up to 11 400 g · mol−1 in proportion to the feed ratio of 2 to 1 . The MALDI‐TOF mass spectra showed that P3HT with moderate molecular weight uniformly had a phenyl group at one end and a hydrogen atom at the other, indicating involvement of a catalyst‐transfer mechanism. Successive 1 ‐catalyzed polymerization of fluorene monomer 3 and then 2 yielded a well‐defined block copolymer of polyfluorene and P3HT.

Summary: Plasma‐initiated controlled/living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out in the presence of 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl 1‐dithionaphthalate. Well‐defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), with a narrow polydispersity, could be synthesized. The polymerization is proposed to occur via a RAFT mechanism. Chain‐extension reactions were also successfully carried out to obtain higher molecular weight PMMA and PMMA‐block‐PSt copolymer.

Summary: The growth of surface‐initiated poly([2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride) (pMETAC) brushes by ATRP was monitored by the quartz crystal microbalance technique with dissipation (QCM‐D). The change in mass of the quartz crystals starting from the adsorption of a thiol initiator monolayer through to the growth of the polymer brushes was determined. The use of QCM‐D allowed determination of the kinetics of polymerization from the surface. The technique can be applied to other polymers synthesised from surfaces and allows the study of varying conditions on the polymerization kinetics.

Summary: Nanowire lengths and length‐to‐width aspect ratios in regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were simply controlled through changes in the solvent vapor pressure during solidification. It is demonstrated that the nanowires grew by rod‐to‐rod association, in which the molecular long axis of the P3HT chains appeared to be well‐oriented parallel to the silicon substrate (Si/SiOx). The formation of the nanowires took place by one dimensional self‐assembly, governed by ππ stacking of the P3HT units.

Poly(anilineboronic acid) (PABA) nanofibers with U‐shaped and ring‐shaped morphologies have been synthesized successfully by chemical polymerization of 3‐aminophenylboronic acid (APBA) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and NaF. The morphologies and sizes of PABA nanofibers can be controlled by adjusting the synthetic parameters, such as the concentrations of CTAB and APBA. The U‐shaped PABA nanofibers exhibit excellent electrochemical redox activity and high sensitive detection of D ‐glucose in phosphate‐buffered saline stock solution (pH 7.4) because of their high effective surface area as well as the high density of boronic acid groups.

Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is one of the most extensively studied reversible deactivation radical polymerization methods for the production of well‐defined polymers. After polymerization, the RAFT agent end‐group can easily be converted into a thiol, opening manifold opportunities for thiol modification reactions. This review is focused both on the introduction of functional end‐groups using well‐established methods, such as thiol‐ene chemistry, as well as on creating bio‐cleavable disulfide linkages via disulfide exchange reactions. We demonstrate that thiol modification is a highly attractive and efficient chemistry for modifying RAFT polymers.

The preparation of a bisphenol‐A carbonate copolymer, containing Cu‐diimine units with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, and its MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometric characterization are reported. Contrary to the usual synthetic method, NLO groups were inserted directly into a commercial polycarbonate by prolonged heating at 250 °C. This innovative procedure allows to obtain a Cu/diimine‐containing polymer of high molecular weight.

Poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) supramolecular structures are fabricated on P3HT‐dispersed reduced graphene oxide (RGO) monolayers and surfactant‐free RGO monolayers. P3HT is able to disperse RGO in hot anisole/N,N‐dimethylformamide solvents, and forms nanowires on RGO surfaces through a RGO induced crystallization process. The TEM and AFM investigation of the resultant P3HT/RGO composites shows that P3HT nanowires grow from RGO, and connect individual RGO monolayers. Raman spectroscopy confirms the interaction between P3HT and RGO, which allows the manipulation of the RGO electrical properties. Such a bottom‐up approach provides interesting graphene‐based composites for nanometer‐scale electronics.

Summary: A high‐molecular‐weight fluorinated poly(aryl ether) with a 4‐bromophenyl pendant group has been synthesized based on a bromo‐bisphenol. A phosphonic acid derivative is readily prepared from this in high conversion yield. The phosphonated polymer possesses excellent thermal, oxidative, and dimensional stability, low methanol permeability, and reasonable proton conductivity, and may be a candidate polymeric electrolyte membrane for fuel cell applications.

A novel α,ω‐heterofunctional poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomer possessing methacryloyl and thienyl end groups was prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide initiated by potassium thienylethoxide and termination of the living PEO ends with methacryloyl chloride. Incorporation of methacryloyl and thienyl groups was confirmed by free‐radical and oxidative polymerization processes, respectively, and by means of 1H NMR analysis.
