A generalized silica coating scheme is used to functionalize and protect sub‐micron and micron size dicyclopentadiene monomer‐filled capsules and polymer‐protected Grubbs' catalyst particles. These capsules and particles are used for self‐healing of microscale damage in an epoxy‐based polymer. The silica layer both protects the capsules and particles, and limits their aggregation when added to an epoxy matrix, enabling the capsules and particles to be dispersed at high concentrations with little loss of reactivity.

We report syntheses of phenylene‐, biphenylene‐, and terphenylene‐layered polymers with a xanthene scaffold by the modified Suzuki‐Miyaura coupling reaction. Their optical properties were studied in detail. The polymer end‐capped by nitrobenzene units, which act as fluorescence quenchers, exhibited the photo‐excited energy transfer from the layered oligophenylenes to the terminal units.

Summary: Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry have been used to study the thermal and thermo‐oxidative degradation of polystyrene (PS) and a PS–clay nanocomposite. An advanced isoconversional method has been applied for kinetic analysis. Introduction of the clay phase increases the activation energy and affects the total heat of degradation, which suggests a change in the reaction mechanism. The obtained kinetic data permit a comparative assessment of the fire resistance of the studied materials.

Elastomeric proteins represent a very interesting subject of investigation, not only for their molecular mechanism(s) of elasticity, but also for their great potential as novel biomaterials. This review is intended to give an overview of the properties of the main elastic proteins, with particular focus on elastin and, at the same time, a report on the most recent acquisitions in the field of elastomeric biomaterials.

Summary: The vapor‐based synthesis and characterization of a reactive polymer, poly[(4‐formyl‐p‐xylylene)‐co‐(p‐xylylene)] ( 1 ), have been reported. The reactive polymer coating enables the immobilization of oligosaccharides via the chemoselective aldehyde‐hydrazide coupling reaction.

A two‐armed polymer with a crown ether core self‐assembles to produce macroporous films with pores perpendicularly reaching through the film down to the substrate. A possible assembling mechanism is discussed. The pore size can be conveniently adjusted by changing the solution concentration. These through‐hole macroporous films provide a template for fabricating an array of Cu nanoparticle aggregates.

Polycondensation of 1‐(2‐pyrimidinyl)pyrrole with 2,7‐dibromo‐9,9‐dioctylfluorene via Ru‐catalyzed direct arylation gives the corresponding conjugated polymer with a molecular weight of 19 800 in 86% yield. The introduction of directing group, 2‐pyrimidinyl substituent, into the pyrrole monomer induces ortho‐metalation and provides the site‐selective direct arylation polycondensation at the α‐position of pyrrole unit without the protection of β‐position. The removal of 2‐pyrimidinyl substituent on the pyrrole unit proceeds efficiently and results in the enhancement of coplanarity along the main chain of the polymer.

It is demonstrated that an optically transparent and electrically conductive polyethylene oxide (PEO) film is fabricated by the introduction of individualized single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The incorporated SWNTs in the PEO film sustain their intrinsic electronic and optical properties and, in addition, the intrinsic properties of the polymer matrix are retained. The individualized SWNTs with smaller diameter provide high transmittance as well as good electrical conductivity in PEO films.

A dextran‐based dual‐sensitive polymer is employed to endow gold nanoparticles with stability and pH‐ and temperature‐sensitivity. The dual‐sensitive polymer is prepared by RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide from trithiocarbonate groups linked to dextran and succinoylation of dextran after polymerization. The functionalized nanoparticles show excellent stability under various conditions and can be stored in powder‐form. UV and DLS measurements confirm that the temperature‐induced optical changes and aggregation behaviors of the particles are strongly dependent on pH.

Summary: Phantom chain MC simulations have been performed for realistically sized systems of polymer chains filled with solid nanoparticles. The results of the simulations and simple theoretical considerations are used to rationalize a number of parameters relevant to the characterization of these systems. Even when the average number of nanoparticles in contact with a chain is very small (much less than unity), the nanoparticles are nodes of highly interconnected transient networks bridged by the polymer chains.

Highly dispersed ZnO nanoparticles with variable particle sizes were successfully prepared within an amphiphilic hyperbranched polyetherpolyol matrix via decomposition of an organometallic precursor in the presence of air leading to stable nanocomposites. The high degree of stabilization during and after the synthesis by the polymer permits control over the nanoparticle size and therefore, due to the quantum‐size‐effect, the particle properties. Furthermore, these polymer‐inorganic nanocomposites can easily be dispersed in apolar solvents to yield highly transparent, stable solutions.

2‐Oxazolines (2‐OZO) are 5‐membered cyclic imino ethers whose cationic ring‐opening polymerization (CROP) mechanism and resulting polymer properties are extensively studied. However, also 6‐ and 7‐membered cyclic imino ethers can be polymerized via CROP. Together with the much less studied 4‐ and 5‐substituted main‐chain chiral poly(2‐oxazoline)s (P‐2‐OZO), these compounds are interesting monomers to enhance the versatility of (co)poly(cyclic imino ether)s. To emphasize the potential of such alternative cyclic imino ether monomers, we provide an overview on the polymerizations of 2‐oxazine (2‐OZI) and chiral 4‐ and 5‐substituted 2‐OZO as well as of selected properties of the resulting polymers. In addition, the hydrolysis of these polymers into the corresponding poly(alkylene imine)s will be addressed.

Summary: A novel semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) with photomechanical switching ability was developed by a cationic copolymerization of azobenzene‐containing vinyl ethers in a matrix of a linear polycarbonate (PC). The semi‐IPN film showed reversible deformation upon switching the UV irradiation on and off and responded with unprecedented rapidity. The photomechanical effect is attributed to a reversible change between the highly aggregated and dissociated states of the azobenzene groups.

A new dendritic heteroarm star copolymer that contains multi‐alternating arms of poly(ethylene oxide‐tetrahydrofuran) (P(EO‐THF)) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on a dendritic polyester core has been synthesized by a ‘core‐first’ approach by combination of sequential cationic ring‐opening polymerization (CROP) and reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization initiated by a dendritic macroinitiator ( 3 ) capped with multi‐alternating terminal carboxylic acid groups (used directly to initiate the ROP of THF in the presence of EO as a polymerization promoter to attain P(EO‐THF) arms) and dithiobenzoate groups (used to initiate RAFT polymerization of MMA to attain PMMA arms). The structures of the products were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, GPC‐MALLS, and DSC measurements.

Summary: This paper demonstrates a new, reliable, and simple method for fabricating micropatterned nanoparticle arrays that can serve as templates for the surface‐initiated polymerization of polymer brushes. As a proof of concept, we micropatterned gold nanoparticles (Au‐NPs, ≈10 nm) onto glass, silicon, polystyrene, and gold surfaces by a simple three‐step process: (1) microcontact printing of soluble polymer, (2) incubation with a solution of Au‐NPs, and (3) lift‐off of the template in a mixture of ethanol and deionized water. 40 µm wide features were successfully fabricated without any significant defects or nonspecific adsorption on the background. To demonstrate the utility of these Au‐NP templates, we subsequently polymerized N‐isopropylacrylamide by surface‐initiated polymerization, using a surface‐bound initiator.
