An analysis is carried out to study the combined effects of viscous and Ohmic heating in the transient, free convective flow of a viscous, incompressible, and doubly stratified fluid past an isothermal vertical plate with radiation and chemical reactions. The governing boundary layer equations are solved numerically by an implicit finite difference scheme of the Crank-Nicolson type. The influence of different parameters on the velocity, the temperature, the concentration, the skin friction, the Nusselt number, and the Sherwood number is discussed with graphical illustrations. It is observed that an increase in either the thermal stratification or the mass stratification parameter decreases the velocity. An increase in the thermal stratification increases the concentration and decreases the temperature while an opposite effect is observed for an increase in the mass stratification. An augmentation in viscous and Ohmic heating increases the velocity and temperature while decreases the concentration. The results are found to be in good agreement with the existing solutions in literature.  相似文献

An analysis has been carried out to obtain the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics of a viscous electrically conducting fluid having temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity past a continuously stretching surface, taking into account the effect of Ohmic heating. The flow is subjected to a uniform transverse magnetic field normal to the plate. The resulting governing three-dimensional equations are transformed using suitable three-dimensional transformations and then solved numerically by using fifth order Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg scheme with a modified version of the Newton–Raphson shooting method. Favorable comparisons with previously published work are obtained. The effects of the various parameters such as magnetic parameter M, the viscosity/temperature parameter θ r , the thermal conductivity parameter S and the Eckert number Ec on the velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles, as well as the local skin-friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, and the local Sherwood number are presented graphically and in tabulated form.  相似文献

A flow and heat transfer numerical simulation is performed for a 2D laminar incompressible gas flow through a constricted microchannel in the slip regime with constant wall temperature. The effects of rarefaction, creeping flow, first order slip boundary conditions and hydrodynamically/thermally developing flow are assumed. The effects of Knudsen number and geometry on thermal and hydrodynamic characteristics of flow in a constricted microchannel are explored. SIMPLE algorithm in curvilinear coordinate is used to solve the governing equations including continuity, energy and momentum with the temperature jump and velocity slip conditions at the solid walls in discretized form. The resulting velocity and temperature profiles are then utilized to obtain the microchannel C f Re and Nusselt number as a function of Knudsen number and geometry. The results show that Knudsen number has declining effect on the C f Re and Nusselt number in the constricted microchannel. In addition, the temperature jump on wall and slip velocity increase with increasing Knudsen number. Moreover, by decreasing the throttle area, the fluid flow characteristics experience more intense variations in the constricted region. To verify the code a comparison is carried out with available results and good agreement is achieved.  相似文献

This paper investigates the problem of hydrodynamic boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a dusty fluid over an unsteady stretching surface. The study considers the effects of frictional heating(viscous dissipation) and internal heat generation or absorption. The basic equations governing the flow and heat transfer are reduced to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations by applying suitable similarity transformations. The transformed equations are numerically solved by the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg-45 order method. An analysis is carried out for two different cases of heating processes, namely, variable wall temperature(VWT) and variable heat flux(VHF).The effects of various physical parameters such as the magnetic parameter, the fluid-particle interaction parameter, the unsteady parameter, the Prandtl number, the Eckert number, the number density of dust particles, and the heat source/sink parameter on velocity and temperature profiles are shown in several plots. The effects of the wall temperature gradient function and the wall temperature function are tabulated and discussed.  相似文献

Steady, laminar, mixed convection in the fully developed region of horizontal concentric annuli has been investigated numerically for the case of non-uniform circumferential heating. Two heating conditions were studied, one in which a 180 arc encompassing the top half of inner surface of the inner cylinder is uniformly heated while the bottom half is kept insulated, and the other in which the heated and the insulated surfaces were reversed. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics were found to be affected by the heating conditions. For the investigated range of the governing buoyancy parameter, the modified Grashof number (Gr*), it was found that bottom heating arrangement gives rise to a vigorous secondary flow, with the result that the average Nusselt numbers are much higher than those for pure forced convection. On the other hand, the local Nusselt numbers are nearly circumferentially uniform. In the case of top heating arrangement, a less vigorous secondary flow is induced because of temperature stratification, with average Nusselt numbers that are substantially lower than those for bottom heating and with large circumferential variation of the local Nusselt number. An analysis is performed to study the MHD free convection flow in a vertical rectangular duct for laminar and fully developed regime taking into consideration the effects of Ohmic heating and viscous dissipation. Numerical solutions are found using finite difference method of second-order accuracy. The effects of various physical parameters such as Hartmann number, aspect ratio, buoyancy parameter and circuit parameter are presented graphically. It is found that as Hartmann number, buoyancy parameter and aspect ratio increase, the upward and downward flow rates are increased for open circuit but decrease for short circuit.  相似文献

Experimental heat transfer measurements and analysis for mixed convection in a vertical square channel are presented. Water flow directions are selected such that buoyancy assists or opposes the bulk flow pressure gradient. Unlike most previous experiments with symmetrically heated circular tubes, the present configuration uses an asymmetric heating condition (two sides heated and two sides insulated) and shows significant increase in the Nusselt number for both assisted and opposed flow conditions. Observed heat transfer coefficient distributions are different from the symmetrically heated channels; and this difference in heat transfer coefficient is attributed to the formation of buoyancy driven large-scale flow structures. In general, opposed flow shows higher heat transfer coefficients, and the Nusselt number ratio is observed to increase as Gr/Re or Gr/Re2 ratios increase for both assisted and opposed flow conditions. A correlation based on the buoyancy parameter predicts the heat transfer pattern well in both assisted and opposed mixed convection. The range of Reynolds numbers discussed (Re=400–10,000) is of importance for direct numerical simulations and the details provided here can serve as the benchmark data required for complicated buoyancy affected turbulence simulations.  相似文献

The heat transfer of the combined magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) and electroosmotic flow(EOF) of non-Newtonian fluid in a rotating microchannel is analyzed. A couple stress fluid model is scrutinized to simulate the rheological characteristics of the fluid. The exact solution for the energy transport equation is achieved. Subsequently, this solution is utilized to obtain the flow velocity and volume flow rates within the flow domain under appropriate boundary conditions. The obtained analytical solution results are compared with the previous data in the literature, and good agreement is obtained.A detailed parametric study of the effects of several factors, e.g., the rotational Reynolds number, the Joule heating parameter, the couple stress parameter, the Hartmann number, and the buoyancy parameter, on the flow velocities and temperature is explored. It is unveiled that the elevation in a couple stress parameter enhances the EOF velocity in the axial direction.  相似文献

The paper considers the flow of a power-law fluid past a vertical stretching sheet. Effects of variable thermal conductivity and non-uniform heat source/sink on the heat transfer are addressed. The thermal conductivity is assumed to vary linearly with temperature. Similarity transformation is used to convert the governing partial differential equations into a set of coupled, non-linear ordinary differential equations. Two different types of boundary heating are considered, namely Prescribed power-law Surface Temperature (PST) and Prescribed power-law Heat Flux (PHF). Shooting method is used to obtain the numerical solution for the resulting boundary value problems. The effects of Chandrasekhar number, Grashof number, Prandtl number, non-uniform heat source/sink parameters, wall temperature parameter and variable thermal conductivity parameter on the dynamics are shown graphically in several plots. The skin friction and heat transfer coefficients are tabulated for a range of values of the parameters. Present study reveals that in a gravity affected flow buoyancy effect has a significant say in the control of flow and heat transfer.  相似文献

The heat transfer and entropy generation characteristics of the magnetohydrodynamic Casson fluid flow through an inclined microchannel with convective boundary conditions are analyzed.Further, the effects of the viscous forces,Joule heating, heat source/sink,and radiation on the flow are taken into account. The non-dimensional transformations are used to solve the governing equations. Then, the reduced system is resolved by the fourth-fifth order Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method along with the shooting technique. The effects of different physical parameters on the heat transfer and entropy generation are discussed in detail through graphs. From the perspective of numerical results,it is recognized that the production of entropy can be improved with the Joule heating, viscous dissipation, and convective heating aspects. It is concluded that the production of entropy is the maximum with increases in the Casson parameter, the angle of inclination, and the Hartmann number. Both the Reynolds number and the radiation parameter cause the dual impact on entropy generation.  相似文献

The steady mixed convection flow and heat transfer from an exponentially stretching vertical surface in a quiescent Maxwell fluid in the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and Joule heating have been studied. The stretching velocity, surface temperature and magnetic field are assumed to have specific exponential function forms for the existence of the local similarity solution. The coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations governing the local similarity flow and heat transfer have been solved numerically by Chebyshev finite difference method. The influence of the buoyancy parameter, viscous dissipation, relaxation parameter of Maxwell fluid, magnetic field and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer has been considered in detail. The Nusselt number increases significantly with the Prandtl number, but the skin friction coefficient decreases. The Nusselt number slightly decreases with increasing viscous dissipation parameter, but the skin friction coefficient slightly increases. Maxwell fluid reduces both skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number, whereas buoyancy force enhances them.  相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to study flow and heat transfer characteristics of a viscous Casson thin film flow over an unsteady stretching sheet subject to variable heat flux in the presence of slip velocity condition and viscous dissipation. The governing equations are partial differential equations. They are reduced to a set of highly nonlinear ordinary differential equations by suitable similarity transformations. The resulting similarity equations are solved numerically with a shooting method. Comparisons with previous works are made, and the results are found to be in excellent agreement. In the present work, the effects of the unsteadiness parameter, the Casson parameter, the Eckert number, the slip velocity parameter, and the Prandtl number on flow and heat transfer characteristics are discussed. Also, the local skin-friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number at the stretching sheet are computed and discussed.  相似文献

The entropy generation and heat transfer characteristics of magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) third-grade fluid flow through a vertical porous microchannel with a convective boundary condition are analyzed. Entropy generation due to flow of MHD non-Newtonian third-grade fluid within a microchannel and temperature-dependent viscosity is studied using the entropy generation rate and Vogel's model. The equations describing flow and heat transport along with boundary conditions are first made dimensionless using proper non-dimensional transformations and then solved numerically via the finite element method(FEM). An appropriate comparison is made with the previously published results in the literature as a limiting case of the considered problem. The comparison confirms excellent agreement. The effects of the Grashof number, the Hartmann number, the Biot number, the exponential space-and thermal-dependent heat source(ESHS/THS) parameters, and the viscous dissipation parameter on the temperature and velocity are studied and presented graphically. The entropy generation and the Bejan number are also calculated. From the comprehensive parametric study, it is recognized that the production of entropy can be improved with convective heating and viscous dissipation aspects. It is also found that the ESHS aspect dominates the THS aspect.  相似文献

The problem of three dimensional unsteady convection flow through a porous medium, with effect of mass transfer bounded by an infinite vertical porous plate is discussed, when the suction at the plate is transverse sinusoidal and the plate temperature oscillates in time about a constant mean. Assuming the free stream velocity to be uniform, approximate solutions are obtained for the flow field, the temperature field, the skin-friction and the rate of heat transfer. The dependence of solution on Pr (Prandtl number), Gr (Grashof number based on temperature), Gc (modified Grashof number based on concentration difference), Sc (Schimdt number), the frequency and the permeability parameter is also investigated.  相似文献

Taking into account the slip flow effects, Newtonian heating, and thermal radiation, two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows and heat transfer past a permeable stretching sheet are investigated numerically. We use one parameter group transformation to develop similarity transformation. By using the similarity transformation, we transform the governing boundary layer equations along with the boundary conditions into ordinary differential equations with relevant boundary conditions. The obtained ordinary differential equations are solved with the fourth-fifth order Runge-Kutta- Fehlberg method using MAPLE 13. The present paper is compared with a published one. Good agreement is obtained. Numerical results for dimensionless velocity, temperature distributions, skin friction factor, and heat transfer rates are discussed for various values of controlling parameters.  相似文献

Local condensation heat transfer coefficients and interfacial shear stresses have been measured for countercurrent stratified flow of steam and subcooled water in rectangular channels over a wide range of inclination angles (4–87°) at two aspect ratios. Dimensionless correlations for the interfacial friction factor have been developed that show that it is a function of the liquid Reynolds number only. Empirical correlations of the heat transfer coefficient, based upon the bulk flow properties, have also been set up for the whole body of data encompassing the different inclination angles and aspect ratios. These indicate that the Froude number as a dimensionless gas velocity is a better correlating parameter than the gas Reynolds number. As an alternative approach, a simple dimensionless relationship for the beat transfer coefficient was obtained by analogy between heat and momentum transfer through the interface. Finally, a turbulence-centered model has been modified by using measured interfacial parameters for the turbulent velocity and length scales, resulting in good agreement with the data.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of free convection boundary layer flow on a solid sphere in a micropolar fluid with Newtonian heating, in which the heat transfer from the surface is proportional to the local surface temperature, is considered. The transformed boundary layer equations in the form of partial differential equations are solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. Numerical solutions are obtained for the local wall temperature, the local skin friction coefficient, as well as the velocity, angular velocity and temperature profiles. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the material or micropolar parameter K, the Prandtl number Pr and the conjugate parameter γ are analyzed and discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of viscous and Ohmic heating and heat generation/absorption on magnetohydrodynamic flow of an electrically conducting Casson thin film fluid over an unsteady horizontal stretching sheet in a non-Darcy porous medium are investigated. The fluid is assumed to slip along the boundary of the sheet. Similarity transformation is used to translate the governing partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. A shooting technique in conjunction with the 4 th order Runge-Kutta method is used to solve the transformed equations. Computations are carried out for velocity and temperature of the fluid thin film along with local skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt number for a range of values of pertinent flow parameters. It is observed that the Casson parameter has the ability to enhance free surface velocity and film thickness, whereas the Forchheimer parameter, which is responsible for the inertial drag has an adverse effect on the fluid velocity inside the film. The velocity slip along the boundary tends to decrease the fluid velocity. This investigation has various applications in engineering and in practical problems such as very large scale integration(VLSI) of electronic chips and film coating.  相似文献

The problem of steady, laminar mixed convective flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting fluid through a vertical channel with heat source or sink is analyzed. The effects of viscous and Ohmic dissipations are included in the energy equation. Both walls are kept either at the same or different temperatures such as isothermal-isothermal, isoflux-isothermal and isothermal-isoflux conditions. Analytical solutions are found using regular perturbation technique and numerical solutions are found using finite difference method. A selected set of graphical results illustrating the effects of various parameters involved in the problem on the flow as well as flow reversal situation and Nusselt numbers are presented and discussed. It is also found that both the analytical and numerical solutions agree very well for small values of the perturbation parameter.  相似文献

Heat transfer in the steady axisymetrical laminar source flow of an incompressible electrically conducting fluid between two parallel disks in the presence of a transverse applied magnetic field is analyzed. The energy equation is solved numerically for the temperature distribution, where both Joulean and viscous heating are included. Both local and average Nusselt numbers for the case of constant wall temperature are evaluated. For fluids of moderate and high Prandtl numbers, Nusselt number is seen to be a strong function of both Hartmann number and a heat generation parameter together with a modified Peclet number. However, for fluids of small Prandtl number, Joulean heating and viscous dissipation can be neglected without appreciable error.  相似文献
