The growth of Pt nanoclusters on thin film Al2O3 grown on NiAl(1 0 0) was studied by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The samples were prepared by vapor depositing various amounts of Pt onto the Al2O3/NiAl(1 0 0) at different substrate temperatures in ultra high vacuum (UHV). The STM images show that sizeable Pt nanoclusters grow solely on crystalline Al2O3 surface. These Pt clusters appear to be randomly distributed and only a few form evident alignment patterns, contrasting with Co clusters that are highly aligned on the crystalline Al2O3. The size distributions of these Pt clusters are rather broader than those of the Co clusters on the same surface and the sizes are evidently smaller. With increasing coverage or deposition temperature, the number of larger clusters is enhanced, while the size of the majority number of the clusters remains around the same (0.4 nm as height and 2.25 nm as diameter), which differs drastically from the Pt clusters on γ-Al2O3/NiAl(1 1 0) observed earlier. These Pt cluster growth features are mostly attributed to smaller diffusion length and ease to form stable nucleus, arising from strong Pt-Pt and Pt-oxide interactions and the peculiar protrusion structures on the ordered Al2O3/NiAl(1 0 0). The thermal stability of Pt nanoclusters was also examined. The cluster density decreased monotonically with annealing temperature up to 1000 K at the expense of smaller clusters but coalescence is not observed.  相似文献

With reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and scanning-tunnelling microscopy (STM), we made measurements on Co and Pt nanoclusters grown by vapour deposition on a thin film of Al2O3/NiAl(1 0 0). The results show that the annealed Co nanoclusters (with mean diameters 2.5, 3.4, 5.8 nm and heights 0.7, 1.5, 1.5 nm, respectively) and Pt nanoclusters (with mean diameter 2.25 nm and height 0.4 nm) are highly crystalline and that their structures are significantly affected by the oxide substrate. Structural analysis based on the RHEED patterns indicates that both Co and Pt clusters have a fcc phase and grow with their (0 0 1) facets parallel to the θ-Al2O3(1 0 0) surfaces, and with their [1 1 0] and [−1 1 0] axes along the [0 1 0] and [0 0 1] directions of the oxide surface, respectively, so (Co(0 0 1)[1 1 0]∥Al2O3(1 0 0)[0 1 0] and Pt(0 0 1)[1 1 0]∥Al2O3(1 0 0)[0 1 0]). This growth is optimal as the Co and Pt fcc (0 0 1) facets match well with the oxygen mesh. To minimize the lattice mismatch, the lattice parameter of the Co clusters expands 4-5% relative to fcc Co bulk, whereas the lattice parameter of the Pt clusters remains near the bulk value, as the Pt fcc (0 0 1) plane has a close lattice match with the oxide surface.  相似文献

Pt, Rh, and Pt-Rh clusters on TiO2(1 1 0) have been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (sXPS), and low energy ion scattering (LEIS). The surface compositions of Pt-Rh clusters are Pt-rich (66-80% Pt) for room temperature deposition of both 2 ML of Pt on 2 ML of Rh (Rh + Pt) and 2 ML of Rh on 2 ML of Pt (Pt + Rh). Pt and Rh atoms readily diffuse within the clusters at room temperature, and although diffusion is slower at 240 K, intermixing of Pt and Rh still occurs. The binding energies of surface and bulk states for Rh(3d5/2) and Pt(4f7/2) can be distinguished in sXPS studies, and an analysis of these spectra indicates that the surface compositions of the Pt + Rh and Rh + Pt clusters are similar at room temperature but not identical. In addition to sintering, the pure Pt, pure Rh and Pt-Rh clusters become completely encapsulated by titania upon heating to 700 K. sXPS investigations show that annealing the clusters to 850 K induces reduction of titania support to Ti+2 and Ti+3, with the extent of reduction being the greatest for Pt, the least for Rh and intermediate for Pt-Rh. We propose that TiO2 is reduced at the metal-titania interface on top of the clusters, not at the base of the clusters. Furthermore, the extent of titania reduction is greater for metal clusters with weaker metal-oxygen bonds because oxygen atoms are less likely to migrate to the top of the clusters, and therefore the encapsulating titania is oxygen-deficient.  相似文献

The surface chemistry of NO and NO2 on clean and oxygen-precovered Pt(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surfaces were investigated by means of high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). At room temperature, NO molecularly adsorbs on Pt(1 1 0), forming linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a). Coverage-dependent repulsive interactions within NO(a) drive the reversible transformation between linear and bridged NO(a). Some NO(a) decomposes upon heating, producing both N2 and N2O. For NO adsorption on the oxygen-precovered surface, repulsive interactions exist between precovered oxygen adatoms and NO(a), resulting in more NO(a) desorbing from the surface in the form of linear NO(a). Bridged NO(a) experiences stronger repulsive interactions with precovered oxygen than linear NO(a). The desorption activation energy of bridged NO(a) from oxygen-precovered Pt(1 1 0) is lower than that from clean Pt(1 1 0), but the desorption activation energy of linear NO(a) is not affected by the precovered oxygen. NO2 decomposes on Pt(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface at room temperature. The resulted NO(a) (both linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a)) and O(a) repulsively interact each other. Comparing with NO/Pt(1 1 0), more NO(a) desorbs from NO2/Pt(1 1 0) as linear NO(a), and both linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a) exhibit lower desorption activation energies. The reaction pathways of NO(a) on Pt(1 1 0), desorption or decomposition, are affected by their repulsive interactions with coexisting oxygen adatoms.  相似文献

We present a study of the growth of silver nanoparticles or clusters on a TiO2(1 1 0) substrate in ultra-high vacuum. The growth is monitored in situ by ion and neutral scattering spectroscopy using He+ scattering and Auger spectroscopy. The scattering measurements show that only part of the surface is covered by Ag suggesting formation of clusters. Additionally an ex-situ study was performed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to determine the size distribution of these clusters. The average size distributions were found to range from about 5 to about 20 nm as a function of the evaporation flux. At the higher evaporation flux we observe formation of the smaller sized clusters.  相似文献

The effect of K on the morphology of Au nanoparticles deposited on TiO2(1 1 0) surface is investigated by STM-STS and AES methods. For comparison, the enhanced concentration of oxygen defect sites generated by Ar+ bombardment was also studied. It was found that both the K additive and the oxygen defect sites induce a pronounced decrease in the average size of the Au nanoparticles evolved at 320 K. On the clean TiO2(1 1 0) the average size of Au particles is 4.3 nm at approximately monolayer coverage of gold, while in the presence of K or oxygen vacancies this value decreased to 2.5 nm. In spite of the reduced average diameter detected at room temperature, the mean size of the Au nanoparticles increased significantly from 2.5 nm up to 7 nm on the effect of annealing at 500-700 K for K precoverages of 0.3-1 ML. For the clean and the Ar+ pretreated TiO2(1 1 0) surfaces the mean size of the Au particles changed only slightly on the effect of the same thermal treatments.  相似文献

We present experimental results on the structural and magnetic properties of series of Fe thin films evaporated onto Si(1 1 1), Si(1 0 0) and glass substrates. The Fe thickness, t, ranges from 6 to110 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to study the structure and surface morphology of these films. The magnetic properties were investigated by means of the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) techniques. The Fe films grow with (1 1 0) texture; as t increases, this (1 1 0) texture becomes weaker for Fe/Si, while for Fe/glass, the texture changes from (1 1 0) to (2 1 1). Grains are larger in Fe/Si than in Fe/glass. The effective magnetization, 4πMeff, inferred from BLS was found to be lower than the 4πMS bulk value. Stress induced anisotropy might be in part responsible for this difference. MFM images reveal stripe domain structure for the 110 nm thick Fe/Si(1 0 0) only.  相似文献

The adsorption of CO on epitaxially grown Pt films of variable thickness has been studied using infrared-absorption spectroscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy and thermal desorption spectroscopy. Depending on the number of pseudomorphic Pt layers (NPt = 1-4) the internal and external CO stretching modes (νC-O and νPt-CO, respectively) display characteristic frequency shifts due to the vanishing influence of the underlying Ru(0 0 0 1) substrate and Pt/Ru interface. For thicker layers (NPt ? 5) when this influence has become negligible, the compressive stress within the Pt film is gradually relieved, leading to a dislocation network. The structural heterogeneity during the ongoing relaxation process of the Pt film is reflected in the νC-O line shape; no line broadening is observed for either pseudomorphic or very thick films (NPt ? 15). For NPt ? 3 the adsorption of CO on Pt/Ru(0 0 0 1) films closely resembles CO on Pt(1 1 1), with residual deviations in line position and desorption temperatures gradually converging to zero.  相似文献

We utilized temperature programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (ELS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) to investigate the oxidation of Pt(1 0 0)-hex-R0.7° at 450 K. Using an oxygen atom beam, we generated atomic oxygen coverages as high as 3.6 ML (monolayers) on Pt(1 0 0) in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), almost 6 times the maximum coverage obtainable by dissociatively adsorbing O2. The results show that oxidation occurs through the development of several chemisorbed phases prior to oxide growth above about 1 ML. A weakly bound oxygen state that populates as the coverage increases from approximately 0.50 ML to 1 ML appears to serve as a necessary precursor to Pt oxide growth. We find that increasing the coverage above about 1 ML causes Pt oxide particle growth and significant surface disordering. Decomposition of the Pt oxide particles produces explosive O2 desorption characterized by a shift of the primary TPD feature to higher temperatures and a dramatic increase in the maximum desorption rate with increasing coverage. Based on thermodynamic considerations, we show that the thermal stability of the surface Pt oxide on Pt single crystal surfaces significantly exceeds that of bulk PtO2. Furthermore, we attribute the high stability and the acceleratory decomposition rates of the surface oxide to large kinetic barriers that must be overcome during oxide formation and decomposition. Lastly, we present evidence that structurally similar oxides develop on both Pt(1 1 1) and Pt(1 0 0), therefore concluding that the properties of the surface Pt oxide are largely insensitive to the initial structure of the Pt single crystal surface.  相似文献

Molybdenum was deposited in two steps (3 eq. ML and 1 eq. ML) on the light blue rutile TiO2(1 1 0) (1 × 1) surface at room temperature, each Mo deposition cycle being followed by an annealing up to 950-1000 K. This procedure was found to lead to formation of separated clusters having a size in very wide range (1-20 nm). Scanning tunneling microscopy showed a dependence of the cluster morphology as a function of the size. The scanning tunneling spectra of Mo clusters was studied as a function of cluster dimensions and discussed in comparison with photoelectron spectroscopy results previously obtained for homogeneous Mo films. The dI/dV curves do not display the valence band structure of deposited material, which could be explained by the Schottky barrier formation.  相似文献

We have studied the epitaxial growth of Au and Pt layers on Fe3O4(1 1 1) as a function of the deposition temperature and thickness. The layers were deposited by UHV sputtering and the structural properties were investigated by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), X-ray experiments and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The epitaxial growth of both metals was obtained whatever the deposition conditions but the wetting is however different for the two metals. Comparison between the coverage ratios of Au and Pt is correlated with their surface and interfaces energies. The optimum conditions to achieve a 2D flat epitaxial metallic layer are determined.  相似文献

The growth of Pt on clusters on TiO2(1 1 0) in the presence and absence of Rh was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for Pt deposited on top of 0.3 ML Rh clusters (Rh + Pt). In situ STM studies of Pt growth at room temperature show that bimetallic clusters are produced when Pt is directly incorporated into existing Rh clusters or when newly nucleated clusters of pure Pt coalesce with existing Rh clusters. Low energy ion scattering experiments demonstrate that Rh is still present at the surface of the clusters even after deposition of 2 ML of Pt, indicating that Rh atoms can diffuse to the cluster surface at room temperature. Rh clusters were found to seed the growth of Pt clusters at room temperature as well as 100 K and 450 K. Furthermore, clusters as large as 100 atoms were observed to be mobile on the surface at room temperature and 450 K, but not at 100 K. Pt deposition at 100 K exhibited more two-dimensional cluster growth and higher cluster densities compared to room temperature experiments due to the lower diffusion rate. Increased diffusion rates at 450 K resulted in more three-dimensional cluster growth and lower densities for pure Pt growth, but cluster densities for Pt + Rh growth were the same as at room temperature.  相似文献

GaN nanowires have been successfully synthesized on Si(1 1 1) substrates by magnetron sputtering through ammoniating Ga2O3/Cr thin films at 950 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FT-IR spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum were carried out to characterize the microstructure, morphology, and optical properties of GaN samples. The results demonstrate that the nanowires are single-crystal GaN with hexagonal wurtzite structure and high-quality crystalline, have the size of 30-80 nm in diameter and several tens of microns in length with good emission properties. The growth direction of GaN nanowires is perpendicular to the fringe of (1 0 1) plane. The growth mechanism of GaN nanowires is also discussed in detail.  相似文献

Au/TiO2/Ru(0 0 0 1) model catalysts and their interaction with CO were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and different surface spectroscopies. Thin titanium oxide films were prepared by Ti deposition on Ru(0 0 0 1) in an O2 atmosphere and subsequent annealing in O2. By optimizing the conditions for deposition and post-treatment, smooth films were obtained either as fully oxidized TiO2 or as partly reduced TiOx, depending on the preparation conditions. CO adsorbed molecularly on both oxidized and reduced TiO2, with slightly stronger bonding on the reduced films. Model catalyst surfaces were prepared by depositing submonolayer quantities of Au on the films and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, a weak interaction between the Au and the TiO2 substrate was found. At 100 K CO adsorption occurred on both the TiO2 film and on the Au nanoparticles. CO desorbed from the Au particles with activation energies between 53 and 65 kJ/mol, depending on the Au coverage. If the Au deposit was annealed to 770 K prior to CO exposure, the CO adsorption energy decreased significantly. STM measurements revealed that the Au particles grow upon annealing, but are not encapsulated by TiOx suboxides. The higher CO adsorption energy observed for smaller Au coverages and before annealing is attributed to a significantly stronger interaction of CO with mono- and bilayer Au islands, while for higher particles, the adsorption energy becomes more bulk-like. The implications of these effects on the known particle size effects in CO oxidation over supported Au/TiO2 catalysts are discussed.  相似文献

Thermal stability of Ag layer on Ti coated Si substrate for different thicknesses of the Ag layer have been studied. To do this, after sputter-deposition of a 10 nm Ti buffer layer on the Si(1 0 0) substrate, an Ag layer with different thicknesses (150-5 nm) was sputtered on the buffer layer. Post annealing process of the samples was performed in an N2 ambient at a flow rate of 200 ml/min in a temperature range from 500 to 700 °C for 30 min. The electrical property of the heat-treated multilayer with the different thicknesses of Ag layer was examined by four-point-probe sheet resistance measurement at the room temperature. Phase formation and crystallographic orientation of the silver layers were studied by θ-2θ X-ray diffraction analysis. The surface topography and morphology of the heat-treated films were determined by atomic force microscopy, and also, scanning electron microscopy. Four-point- probe electrical measurement showed no considerable variation of sheet resistance by reducing the thickness of the annealed Ag films down to 25 nm. Surface roughness of the Ag films with (1 1 1) preferred crystallographic orientation was much smaller than the film thickness, which is a necessary condition for nanometric contact layers. Therefore, we have shown that the Ag layers with suitable nano-thicknesses sputtered on 10 nm Ti buffer layer were thermally stable up to 700 °C.  相似文献

Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) films were grown on (1 0 0) oriented SrTiO3 (STO) substrate using sol-gel spin-coating method. The effects of heat treatment conditions and coating times on the phase formation and surface morphology were investigated using thermal analysis, optical microscope, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electronic microscopy. Mixed phases were formed from 820 to 840 °C, and Bi-2212 single phase was obtained at 830 °C for 3 h. c-axis epitaxial films with smooth surfaces were obtained by drying at 600 °C and coating for 5 times.  相似文献

An ordered (√19 × √19)R23.4°-Ge/Pt(1 1 1) surface alloy can be formed by vapor depositing one-monolayer Ge on a Pt(1 1 1) substrate at room temperature and subsequently annealing at 900-1200 K. The long-range order of this structure was observed by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The local structure and alloying of vapor-deposited Ge on Pt(1 1 1) at 300 K was investigated by using X-ray Photoelectron Diffraction (XPD) and low energy alkali ion scattering spectroscopy (ALISS). XPS indicates that Ge adatoms are incorporated to form an alloy surface layer at ∼900 K. Results from XPD and ALISS establish that Ge atoms are substitutionally incorporated into the Pt surface layer and reside exclusively in the topmost layer, with excess Ge diffusing deep into the bulk of the crystal. The incorporated Ge atoms at the surface are located very close to substitutional Pt atomic positions, without any corrugation or “buckling”. Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) shows that both CO and NO adsorb more weakly on the Ge/Pt(1 1 1) surface alloy compared to that on the clean Pt(1 1 1) surface.  相似文献

Ultra-thin Nb2O5 films with excellent uniformity have been grown on Si (1 0 0) by atomic-layer-deposition using Nb(OC2H5)5 and H2O precursors, and the corresponding thermal stability has been studied through atomic force microscope, transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that the ultra-thin (∼3 nm) Nb2O5 film is gradually built up into distributed large islands with increasing rapid thermal annealing (RTA) temperature. Meanwhile, both crystalline and amorphous phases are formed in the matrix of Nb2O5 annealed at 700 °C. In terms of the as-prepared sample, an interfacial layer (IL) with a thickness of around 1.5 nm is observed, that is composed of niobium silicate (Nb-O-Si). Further, the high temperature RTA leads to a thickened IL, which is attributed to the formation of more Nb-O-Si bonds and new silicon oxide (Si-O-Si) adjacent to the Si (1 0 0).  相似文献

The growth of submonolayer Pt on Ru(0 0 0 1) has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy. We focus on the island evolution depending on Pt coverage θPt, growth temperature TG and post-growth annealing temperature TA. Dendritic trigonal Pt islands with atomically rough borders are observed at room temperature and moderate deposition rates of about 5 × 10−4 ML/s. Two types of orientation, rotated by 180° and strongly influenced by minute amounts of oxygen are observed which is ascribed to nucleation starting at either hcp or fcc hollow sites. The preference for fcc sites changes to hcp in the presence of about one percent of oxygen. At lower growth temperatures Pt islands show a more fractal shape. Generally, atomically rough island borders smooth down at elevated growth temperatures higher than 300 K, or equivalent annealing temperatures. Dendritic Pt islands, for example, transform into compact, almost hexagonal islands, indicating similar step energies of A- and B-type of steps. Depending on the Pt coverage the thermal evolution differs somewhat: While regular islands on Ru(0 0 0 1) are formed at low coverages, vacancy islands are observed close to completion of the Pt layer.  相似文献

Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) has been used to investigate the adsorption of CO on CeO2−x-supported Pd nanoparticles at room temperature. The results show that when CeO2−x is initially grown on Pt(1 1 1), a small proportion of the surface remains as bare Pt sites. However, when Pd is deposited onto CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1), most of the Pd grows directly on top of the CeO2−x(1 1 1). RAIR spectra of CO adsorption on 1 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) show a broad CO-Pd band, which is inconsistent with a single crystal Pd surface. However, the 5 ML and 10 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) spectra show vibrational bands consistent with the presence of Pd(1 1 1) and (1 0 0) faces, suggesting the growth of Pd nanostructures with well defined facets.  相似文献
