The buoyancy effects on the development of the thermal mixing layer downstream from a horizontal separating plate were studied by comparing stable and unstable counter-gradient configurations. In this study, the novel experimental technique called parameterizable constant temperature anemometer, proposed by Ndoye et al. (Meas Sci Technol 21(7):075401, 2010), was improved to make possible the simultaneous measurement of temperature and two velocity components with an x-wire probe. The buoyancy effects on the flow are discussed through the transport equations of turbulent kinetic energy and temperature variance. In view of the low Richardson numbers at stake (Ri f < 0.03), the buoyancy forces appeared logically to be quantitatively negligible compared to the main driving forces, but such a low-energy forcing mechanism was in fact sufficient in unstable configurations to increase the shear stress and the expansion rate of the mixing layer significantly, both phenomena being associated with enhanced production of turbulence.  相似文献

A direct method for analyzing diapycnal mixing in a stably stratified fluid (Winters et al., 1995) has been applied to the stably stratified shear layer. The diapycnal flux and mixing efficiency are computed as functions of time, whatever the turbulent activity in the fluid. The mixing properties of two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations of the Boussinesq equations are analyzed and compared. The interest of the former simulations is to emphasize the fundamental role of three-dimensional effects in fluid mixing and to quantify it. We focus on the influence of stratification (measured by the minimum Richardson number J) and changes in Prandtl number on the overall mixing that occurs as the computed flows evolve from unstable initial conditions.

In three dimensions, the flow dynamics exhibit three successive stages, each with different mixing properties. During the first stage, a primarily two-dimensional Kelvin–Helmholtz instability develops and the mixing efficiency is high (the flux Richardson number Rfb ranges between 0.37 and 0.68, decreasing as J increases). The second stage is characterized by the development of small-scale three-dimensional instabilities. These motions result in significantly higher diapycnal flux than during the first stage but in only moderate mixing efficiency (Rfb0.32), as the rate of kinetic energy dissipation is also high during this stage. Finally, the turbulent activity is progressively expulsed toward the outer regions of the shear layer and decays in time while the central region relaminarizes. During this final stage, Rfb approaches an asymptotic value close to 0.25 and the diapycnal diffusivity displays a clear functional dependence on a gradient Richardson number Rib of the form Rib−2.

As expected, the two-dimensional flows are unable to reproduce the mixing properties of the flow, except during the first stage. During the subsequent turbulent regime, both the diapycnal flux and the dissipation rate of kinetic energy are too small (because, for the latter quantity, of the nonlinear enstrophy conservation constraint). The final stage consists in a quasi-stationary weakly turbulent regime, for which the diapycnal diffusivity behaves as Rib−1. It should be noted that, despite these differences, Rfb relaxes toward the 0.25 value found in three dimensions.  相似文献

An effective numerical technique is presented to model turbulent motion of a standing surface wave in a tank. The equations of motion for turbulent boundary layers at the solid surfaces are coupled with the potential flow in the bulk of the fluid, and a mixed BEM–finite difference technique is used to model the wave motion and the corresponding boundary layer flow. A mixing‐length theory is used for turbulence modelling. The model results are in good agreement with previous physical and numerical experiments. Although the technique is presented for a standing surface wave, it can be easily applied to other free surface problems. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Results from computational fluid dynamics experiments of internal wave reflection from sloping boundaries are presented. In these experiments the incident wave lies in a plane normal to the slope. When the angle of wave energy propagation is close to the bottom slope the reflection causes wave breakdown into a quasi-periodic, turbulent boundary layer. Boundary layer energetics and vorticity dynamics are examined and indicate the importance of the three-dimensional turbulence. The boundary layer exhibits intermittent turbulence: approximately every 1.2 wave periods the boundary layer mixes energetically for a duration of about one-third of a wave period, and then it restratifies until the next mixing event. Throughout the wave cycle a strong thermal front is observed to move upslope at the phase speed of the incident waves. Simulations demonstrate that the net effects of turbulent mixing are not confined to the boundary layer, but are communicated to the interior stratified fluid by motions induced by buoyancy effects and by the wave field, resulting in progressive weakening of the background density gradient. Transition to turbulence is determined to occur at Reynolds numbers of approximately 1500, based upon the wavelength and maximum current velocity of the oncoming wave train. The boundary layer thickness depends on the Reynolds number for low Richardson numbers, with a characteristic depth of approximately one-half of the vertical wavelength of the oncoming wave. A flat plate experiment was performed in a water tunnel to determine the effects of a vortex generator jet on the characteristics of a turbulent boundary layer at various wall normal locations. The results show that the characteristic distributions of the turbulent fluctuation quantities are nearly unaffected by the induced vortex structures neither in the steady nor in the dynamic blowing case. The shear layer interaction between the turbulent main flow and the jet flow produces less turbulent fluctuations than it is expected from a turbulent free jet flow. Thus, the mixing process of this flow control strategy is based only on a large-scale momentum transport superimposed by the turbulent fluctuation quantities. This allows a separation of scales for physical interpretation and numerical simulations.  相似文献

The effect of micro-bubbles on the turbulent boundary layer in the channel flow with Reynolds numbers (Re) ranging from \(0.87\times 10 ^{5}\) to \(1.23\times 10^{5}\) is experimentally studied by using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The micro-bubbles are produced by water electrolysis. The velocity profiles, Reynolds stress and instantaneous structures of the boundary layer, with and without micro-bubbles, are measured and analyzed. The presence of micro-bubbles changes the streamwise mean velocity of the fluid and increases the wall shear stress. The results show that micro-bubbles have two effects, buoyancy and extrusion, which dominate the flow behavior of the mixed fluid in the turbulent boundary layer. The buoyancy effect leads to upward motion that drives the fluid motion in the same direction and, therefore, enhances the turbulence intense of the boundary layer. While for the extrusion effect, the presence of accumulated micro-bubbles pushes the flow structures in the turbulent boundary layer away from the near-wall region. The interaction between these two effects causes the vorticity structures and turbulence activity to be in the region far away from the wall. The buoyancy effect is dominant when the Re is relatively small, while the extrusion effect plays a more important role when Re rises.  相似文献

The paper investigates buoyancy impact on the vertical flow over a backward-facing step at low Prandtl number by Direct Numerical Simulation. In particular, the very low Prandtl number of liquid sodium, 0.0088, is considered in the regime of mixed convection, i.e. for Richardson numbers below unity. The effects of buoyancy on mean flow, heat transfer and turbulence are assessed. Buoyancy is found to attenuate recirculation and, consequently, increase heat transfer. Turbulence is decreased in the attached boundary layer for moderate buoyancy impact but surpasses the levels found in forced convection at the largest Richardson number investigated. Beyond the mean flow and second moments, the budgets of turbulent kinetic energy, Reynolds shear stress, temperature variance, and turbulent heat flux components are studied and related to the alterations in the mean field quantities. Due to scale separation, production and dissipation nearly balance for temperature variance while this is not the case for turbulent kinetic energy. Similar findings for the turbulent heat fluxes show that the correlation between temperature and pressure gradient is the most important contribution to the budget aside from production and dissipation. In addition to the physical insight into this flow, the data presented may be used for the validation and improvement of turbulence models for liquid metal flows.  相似文献

Motivated by geological carbon storage and hydrocarbon recovery, the effect of buoyancy and viscous forces on the displacement of one fluid by a second immiscible fluid, along parallel and dipping layers of contrasting permeability, is characterized using five independent dimensionless numbers and a dimensionless storage or recovery efficiency. Application of simple dimensionless models shows that increased longitudinal buoyancy effects increase storage efficiency by reducing the distance between the leading edges of the injected phase in each layer and decreasing the residual displaced phase saturation behind the leading edge of the displacing phase. Increased transverse buoyancy crossflow increases storage efficiency if it competes with permeability layering effects, but reduces storage efficiency otherwise. When both longitudinal and transverse buoyancy effects are varied simultaneously, a purely geometrical dip angle group defines whether changes in storage efficiency are dominated by changes in the longitudinal or transverse buoyancy effects. In the limit of buoyancy-segregated flow, we report an equivalent, unidimensional flow model which allows rapid prediction of storage efficiency. The model presented accounts for both dip and layering, thereby generalizing earlier work which accounted for each of these but not both together. We suggest that the predicted storage efficiency can be used to compare and rank geostatistical realizations, and complements earlier heterogeneity measures which are applicable in the viscous limit.  相似文献

The establishment of a turbulent mixed layer in a two-layer stratified shear flow, and the rate of entrainment into that layer were studied experimentally in a modified annulus. The modification of the conventional annulus was made by replacing the upper rotating screen with inner rotating sidewalls, extending over the upper half of the channel, so that the flow in the upper layer was nearly uniform and almost laminar, while the bottom layer was quiescent. Vertical density profile measurements were conducted using single electrode conductivity probes. The flow was visualized during the various stages of the experiment using the hydrogen bubble technique. After the start of the sidewalls rotation, the upper layer accelerates from rest, and consequently a transition process is taking place during which the initial density interface between the two layers is developed into a turbulent mixed layer. This turbulent layer is bounded by two sharp interfaces, each separating it from an outer non-turbulent zone. The generation of this five-layer structure seemed to be dominated by instabilities activated by the velocity difference between the upper and lower layer.Once a turbulent mixed layer is formed, entrainment of nonturbulent fluid into that layer is taking place causing its thickness to increase continuously. Depending on the overall Richardson number, based on the channel width, the slope of the entrainment law curve was found to have two different values, each indicating the dominance of a different source of turbulent energy production. For relatively low Richardson numbers, the slope is close to -1.8, implying that the velocity shear across each interface contributes significantly to the entrainment. On the other hand, for larger Richardson numbers the slope is about -1.25, in agreement with previous results of shear-free entrainment experiments. The measured velocity profiles indicate that as long as the mixed layer is not too thick, the radial inhomogeneities are small and the flow may be considered as nearly one-dimensional. It seems, therefore, that for the understanding of entrainment processes occurring in realistic stratified flows, the modified annulus is a more reliable tool than the conventional one.  相似文献

This paper details the influence of the magnitude of imposed inflow fluctuations on Large Eddy Simulations of a spatially developing turbulent mixing layer originating from laminar boundary layers. The fluctuations are physically-correlated, and produced by an inflow generation technique. The imposed high-speed side boundary layer fluctuation magnitude is varied from a low-level, up to a magnitude sufficiently high that the boundary layer can be considered, in a mean sense, as nominally laminar. Cross-plane flow visualisation shows that each simulation contains streamwise vortices in the laminar and turbulent regions of the mixing layer. Statistical analysis of the secondary shear stress reveals that mixing layers originating from boundary layers with low-level fluctuations contain a spatially stationary streamwise structure. Increasing the high-speed side boundary layer fluctuation magnitude leads to a weakening of this stationary streamwise structure, or its removal from the flow entirely. The mixing layer growth rate reduces with increasing initial fluctuation level. These findings are discussed in terms of the available experimental data on mixing layers, and recommendations for both future experimental and numerical research into the mixing layer are made.  相似文献

Mixing of jets is crucial for optimal performance of many industrial applications and there is a need to optimize both nozzle geometry and flow conditions. The present study reports the influence of buoyancy and perforation on mixing between a jet and its environment. Optical techniques are ideal for the study of jet mixing due to their non-intrusive and inertia free properties. The present study gives an account of mixing between helium jet and the ambient fluid using a combination of color schlieren deflectometry and radial tomographic mathematics. Four different perforation sizes have been used and the experiments are performed for Reynolds numbers 21–676 and Richardson numbers 3.27–0.0015. Color schlieren images show distinct influence of perforation and flow conditions (Richardson number). Oxygen concentration and jet width quantify effectiveness of jet mixing. Buoyancy plays an important role in mixing at high Richardson number. Perforation improves jet mixing i.e. there is about 120% increase in jet width and the size of perforation plays an important role.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with an experimental investigation of the mixing inside the vortex ring formed by the gravity slumping motion of a dense cloud in a less dense atmosphere. The dynamics of the spreading and instantaneous structures of the turbulent flow were examined by visualization, single and multi-point measurements of velocity and concentration for two heavy gases, carbondioxide (CO2) and dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl2F2), in a configuration in that heavy gas, initially trapped in a reservoir, was released with the rise of a shutter into calm air of a sector-shaped dispersion channel. Visualization of the cloud as a whole showed a spreading motion in which an advancing frontal structure was followed by a stratified flow with a layer of dense fluid of higher velocities near the wall and, on top of it, a layer of dilute fluid whose concentration is controlled by the mixing mechanisms within the head. During the course of spreading, there was always a phase in which the head attained to a constant speed of advance, which occurred as 0.13 m/s for CO2 and 0.48 m/s for CCl2F2. It was interesting to observe for CO2 that the phase of constant speed took place in between two acceleration phases; the former was due to the initial slumping of the cloud at the exit of the reservoir, and the latter was attributed to the collapse of the head on the transition to the passive dispersion phase. Instantaneous two-dimensional velocity field, measured with particle image velocimeter (PIV), showed that the cloud overran the ambient air which caused the approaching dense fluid deflected away from the wall with significant vertical velocities and downstream-moving separation, and the air trapped under the head resulted in the density inversion which introduced further intricacy to the turbulent structure of the head. Instabilities at the upper free shear layer due to density and velocity discontinuity rolled into periodic array of vortices which engulfed a considerable amount of air as they were convected backwards over the head, but the incorporation of heavy and light fluids was completed with the appearance of microscales after the collapse on the stratified layer. Analyses of the cloud head at different downstream locations also revealed that its size remained unchanged when the speed of advance was constant, allowing the rate of change of the cloud volume being modeled with the rate of spreading. Contours of concentration obtained from digitized PIV pictures confirmed the kinematic features of the mixing revealed by the velocity field and that the concentration values within the large structures were higher than those at the upper part of the stratified layer. Motivated by the experimental observations, a semi-empirical analysis was presented to describe the results and based on local values of the Richardson and Reynolds numbers. The flow control effects of nanosecond plasma actuation on the boundary layer flow of a typical compressor controlled diffusion airfoil are investigated using large eddy simulation method. Three types of plasma actuation are designed to control the boundary layer flow, and two mechanisms of compressor airfoil boundary layer flow control using nanosecond plasma actuation have been found. The plasma actuations located within the laminar boundary layer flow can induce a small vortex structure through influencing on the density and pressure of the flow field. As the small vortex structure moves downstream along the blade surface with the main flow, it can suppress the turbulent flow mixing and reduce the total pressure loss. The flow control effect of the small vortex structure is summarized as wall jet effect. Differently, the plasma actuation located within the turbulent boundary layer flow can act on the shear layer flow and induce a large vortex structure. While moving downstream, this large vortex structure can suppress the turbulent flow mixing too.  相似文献

Flow visualization has been conducted in a rotating cavity, comprising two steel discs and a peripheral polycarbonate shroud, for dimensionless flow rates of air up to |Cw|8000 and rotational Reynolds number up to Reφ106. For all the experiments, the ratio of the inner to outer radii of the discs was 0.1 and the ratio of the axial clearance between the discs to their outer radii was 0.133; five different shroud geometries were tested. The flow visualization has confirmed that the flow structure comprises a source region near the shroud, laminar or turbulent Ekman layers on the discs, a sink layer near the centre of the cavity, and an interior core of rotating fluid. Above a certain flow rate, this structure was found to be unstable; heating one disc tended to stabilize the flow. For isothermal flow, measurements of the size of the source region were in good agreement with values predicted from a simple theoretical model.  相似文献

The present study describes the application of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to investigate the compressible flow in the wake of a two-dimensional blunt base at a freestream Mach number MX=2. The first part of the study addresses specific issues related to the application of PIV to supersonic wind tunnel flows, such as the seeding particle flow-tracing fidelity and the measurement spatial resolution. The seeding particle response is assessed through a planar oblique shock wave experiment. The measurement spatial resolution is enhanced by means of an advanced image-interrogation algorithm. In the second part, the experimental results are presented. The PIV measurements yield the spatial distribution of mean velocity and turbulence. The mean velocity distribution clearly reveals the main flow features such as expansion fans, separated shear layers, flow recirculation, reattachment, recompression and wake development. The turbulence distribution shows the growth of turbulent fluctuations in the separated shear layers up to the reattachment location. Increased velocity fluctuations are also present downstream of reattachment outside of the wake due to unsteady flow reattachment and recompression. The instantaneous velocity field is analyzed seeking coherent flow structures in the redeveloping wake. The instantaneous planar velocity and vorticity measurements return evidence of large-scale turbulent structures detected as spatially coherent vorticity fluctuations. The velocity pattern consistently shows large masses of fluid in vortical motion. The overall instantaneous wake flow is organized as a double row of counter-rotating structures. The single structures show vorticity contours of roughly elliptical shape in agreement with previous studies based on spatial correlation of planar light scattering. Peak vorticity is found to be five times higher than the mean vorticity value, suggesting that wake turbulence is dominated by the activity of large-scale structures. The unsteady behavior of the reattachment phenomenon is studied. Based on the instantaneous flow topology, the reattachment is observed to fluctuate mostly in the streamwise direction suggesting that the unsteady separation is dominated by a pumping-like motion.  相似文献

Wakes behind heated cylinders, circular, and square have been experimentally investigated at low-Reynolds numbers. The electrically heated cylinder is mounted in a vertical airflow facility such that buoyancy aids the inertia of main flow. The operating parameters, i.e., Reynolds number and Richardson number are varied to examine flow behavior over a range of experimental conditions from forced to mixed convection regime. Laser schlieren-interferometry has been used for visualization and analysis of flow structures. Complete vortex shedding sequence has been recorded using a high-speed camera. The results on detailed dynamical characteristics of vortical structures, i.e., their size, shape and phase, Strouhal number, power spectra, convection velocity, phase shift, vortex inception length, and fluctuations are reported. On heating, alteration of organized (coherent) structures with respect to shape, size and their movement is readily perceived from instantaneous Schlieren images before they reduce to a steady plume. For both cylinders, Strouhal number shows a slow increase with an increase in Richardson number. At a critical value, there is complete disappearance of vortex shedding and a drop in Strouhal number to zero. The corresponding spectra evolve from being highly peaked at the vortex shedding frequency to a broadband appearance when vortex shedding is suppressed. The geometry of vortex structures transforms to a slender shape before shedding is suppressed. At this heating level, absence of multiple peaks in power spectra at cylinder centerline indicates absence of interaction between opposite shear layers. The convection velocity of vortices increases in stream wise direction to an asymptotic value and its variation is a function of Richardson number. The convection speed abruptly falls to zero at critical Richardson number. The phase difference of shed vortices between upstream and downstream location increases with an increase in Richardson number. Velocity profiles show an increase in fluid speed and beyond the critical point, buoyancy forces add enough momentum to cancel momentum deficit due to the cylinder. Overall, the combined effect of temperature gradient on the separating shear layer velocity profile in near field and vortical structures interaction in far field influences wake instability of a heated cylinder. This paper describes a combined experimental and numerical study of scalar transport in spatially developing, two-stream, turbulent mixing layers with velocity ratios of approximately 2:1. The experimental mixing layer was created by an S-shaped splitter plate mounted in a wind tunnel, and the concentration field was realized by releasing incense smoke into the high-speed side boundary layer above the splitter plate. Simultaneous measurements of the velocity and concentration fields were performed. A 12-sensor hot-wire probe was used to measure the velocity field and its gradients, while the concentration field was recorded with digital photographs of the laser-illuminated smoke. In parallel, a large-eddy simulation (LES) of the spatially developing mixing layer was carried out. Auxiliary turbulent boundary layer LES were used to provide high quality inflow boundary conditions for the velocity and concentration fields. By synchronizing the velocity and concentration measurements, concentration fluxes were also determined. Octant analysis based on the sign combinations of the velocity and concentration fuctuations was performed on the flux data to investigate the scalar transport processes. It was found that octants compatible with mean gradient transport of the scalar contribute most to the scalar fluxes. Conditional planar averages of scalar and momentum fluxes were obtained to determine their spatial distribution with respect to the organized roller and rib vortices of the mixing layer, and distinct patterns were observed. The simulation provided additional insight about the flow and scalar flux distribution topology. This topology was found to be partially compatible with simple models of roller and rib vortices that transport the scalar in a mean gradient sense.  相似文献

Heat transfer characteristics of a two-dimensional steady hydromagnetic natural convection flow of nanofluids over a non-linear stretching sheet taking into account the effects of radiation and convective boundary condition has been investigated numerically. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. The local similarity solutions are obtained by using very robust computer algebra software Maple 13. The results corresponding to the dimensionless temperature profiles and the reduced Nusselt number, Sherwood number and skin friction coefficient are displayed graphically for various pertinent parameters. The results show that temperature within the boundary layer is enhanced with the increase of the Biot number, buoyancy due to nanoparticle concentration, strength of the applied magnetic field, Brownian motion parameter, and thermophoresis parameter. An opposite trend is observed for the increase of the buoyancy due to temperature, stretching index, and the radiation parameter. The results also show that the local rate of heat transfer strongly depends on the nonlinear stretching index, radiation parameter, Biot number, Brownian motion parameter, and thermophoresis parameter.  相似文献
