For a graph G=(V,E), a total ordering L on V, and a vertex vV, let Wcol2[G,L,v] be the set of vertices wV for which there is a path from v to w whose length is 0, 1 or 2 and whose L-least vertex is w. The weak 2-coloring number wcol2(G) of G is the least k such that there is a total ordering L on V with |Wcol2[G,L,v]|k for all vertices vV. We improve the known upper bound on the weak 2-coloring number of planar graphs from 28 to 23. As the weak 2-coloring number is the best known upper bound on the star list chromatic number of planar graphs, this bound is also improved.  相似文献

Given a graph G and an integer k≥0, the NP-complete Induced Matching problem asks whether there exists an edge subset M of size at least k such that M is a matching and no two edges of M are joined by an edge of G. The complexity of this problem on general graphs, as well as on many restricted graph classes has been studied intensively. However, other than the fact that the problem is W[1]-hard on general graphs, little is known about the parameterized complexity of the problem in restricted graph classes. In this work, we provide first-time fixed-parameter tractability results for planar graphs, bounded-degree graphs, graphs with girth at least six, bipartite graphs, line graphs, and graphs of bounded treewidth. In particular, we give a linear-size problem kernel for planar graphs.  相似文献

We solve a conjecture of Roditty, Shoham and Yuster [P.J. Cameron (Ed.), Problems from the 17th British Combinatorial Conference, Discrete Math., 231 (2001) 469-478; Y. Roditty, B. Shoham, R. Yuster, Monotone paths in edge-ordered sparse graphs, Discrete Math. 226 (2001) 411-417] on the caterpillar arboricity of planar graphs. We prove that for every planar graph G=(V,E), the edge set E can be partitioned into four subsets (Ei)1?i?4 in such a way that G[Ei], for 1?i?4, is a forest of caterpillars. We also provide a linear-time algorithm which constructs for a given planar graph G, four forests of caterpillars covering the edges of G.  相似文献

As an extension of the disjoint paths problem, we introduce a new problem which we call the induced disjoint paths problem. In this problem we are given a graph G and a collection of vertex pairs {(s1,t1),…,(sk,tk)}. The objective is to find k paths P1,…,Pk such that Pi is a path from si to ti and Pi and Pj have neither common vertices nor adjacent vertices for any distinct i,j.The induced disjoint paths problem has several variants depending on whether k is a fixed constant or a part of the input, whether the graph is directed or undirected, and whether the graph is planar or not. We investigate the computational complexity of several variants of the induced disjoint paths problem. We show that the induced disjoint paths problem is (i) solvable in polynomial time when k is fixed and G is a directed (or undirected) planar graph, (ii) NP-hard when k=2 and G is an acyclic directed graph, (iii) NP-hard when k=2 and G is an undirected general graph.As an application of our first result, we show that we can find in polynomial time certain structures called a “hole” and a “theta” in a planar graph.  相似文献

The Star Chromatic Numbers of Some Planar Graphs Derived from Wheels   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The notion of the star chromatic number of a graph is a generalization of the chromatic number. In this paper, we calculate the star chromatic numbers of three infinite families of planar graphs. The first two families are derived from a 3-or 5-wheel by subdivisions, their star chromatic numbers being 2+2/(2n + 1), 2+3/(3n + 1), and 2+3(3n−1), respectively. The third family of planar graphs are derived from n odd wheels by Hajos construction with star chromatic numbers 3 + 1/n, which is a generalization of one result of Gao et al. An induced matching in a graph G=(V,E) is a matching M such that (V,M) is an induced subgraph of G. Clearly, among two vertices with the same neighbourhood (called twins) at most one is matched in any induced matching, and if one of them is matched then there is another matching of the same size that matches the other vertex. Motivated by this, Kanj et al. [10] studied induced matchings in twinless graphs. They showed that any twinless planar graph contains an induced matching of size at least and that there are twinless planar graphs that do not contain an induced matching of size greater than . We improve both these bounds to , which is tight up to an additive constant. This implies that the problem of deciding whether a planar graph has an induced matching of size k has a kernel of size at most 28k. We also show for the first time that this problem is fixed parameter tractable for graphs of bounded arboricity.Kanj et al. also presented an algorithm which decides in -time whether an n-vertex planar graph contains an induced matching of size k. Our results improve the time complexity analysis of their algorithm. However, we also show a more efficient -time algorithm. Its main ingredient is a new, O(4l)-time algorithm for finding a maximum induced matching in a graph of branch width at most l.  相似文献

Recently Chen et al. [Tree domination in graphs, Ars Combin. 73 (2004) 193-203] asked for characterizations of the class of graphs and the class of regular graphs that have an induced dominating tree, i.e. for which there exists a dominating set that induces a tree.We give a somewhat negative answer to their question by proving that the corresponding decision problems are NP-complete. Furthermore, we prove essentially best-possible lower bounds on the maximum order of induced trees in connected cacti of maximum degree 3 and connected cubic graphs.Finally, we give a forbidden induced subgraph condition for the existence of induced dominating trees.  相似文献

A graph is called claw-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to K1,3. Matthews and Sumner proved that a 2-connected claw-free graph G is Hamiltonian if every vertex of it has degree at least (|V(G)|-2)/3. At the workshop C&C (Novy Smokovec, 1993), Broersma conjectured the degree condition of this result can be restricted only to end-vertices of induced copies of N (the graph obtained from a triangle by adding three disjoint pendant edges). Fujisawa and Yamashita showed that the degree condition of Matthews and Sumner can be restricted only to end-vertices of induced copies of Z1 (the graph obtained from a triangle by adding one pendant edge). Our main result in this paper is a characterization of all graphs H such that a 2-connected claw-free graph G is Hamiltonian if each end-vertex of every induced copy of H in G has degree at least |V(G)|/3+1. This gives an affirmative solution of the conjecture of Broersma up to an additive constant.  相似文献

It has been conjectured [B. Xu, On signed cycle domination in graphs, Discrete Math. 309 (4) (2009) 1007–1012] that if there is a mapping from the edge set of a 2-connected graph G to {−1,1} such that for each induced subgraph, that is a cycle, the sum of all numbers assigned to its edges by this mapping is positive, then the number of all those edges of G to which 1 is assigned, is more than the number of all other edges of G. This conjecture follows from the main result of this note: If a mapping assigns integers as weights to the edges of a 2-connected graphGsuch that for each edge, its weight is not more than 1 and for each cycle which is an induced subgraph ofG, the sum of all weights of its edges is positive, then the sum of all weights of the edges ofGalso is positive. A simple corollary of this result is the following: If?is a mapping from the edge set of a 2-connected graphGto a set of real numbers such that for each cycleCofG, ∑eE(C)?(e)>0, theneE(G)?(e)also is positive.  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n and μ be an adjacency eigenvalue of G with multiplicity k ≥ 1. A star complement H for μ in G is an induced subgraph of G of order n-k with no eigenvalue μ, and the subset X = V(G-H) is called a star set for μ in G.
