The efficiency of chitosan (a naturally occurring polymer) as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 0.1 M HCl was investigated by gravimetric, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and UV–visible analysis. The polymer was found to inhibit corrosion even at a very low concentration. Inhibition efficiency increases with a rise in temperature up to 96 % at 60 °C and then drops to 93 % at 70 °C, while it slightly increases with an increase in chitosan concentration. Polarization curves indicate that chitosan functions as a mixed inhibitor, affecting both cathodic and anodic partial reactions. Impedance results indicate that chitosan was adsorbed on the metal/solution interface. Adsorption of chitosan at the mild steel surface is found to be in agreement with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Chemical adsorption is the proposed mechanism for corrosion inhibition considering the trend of protection efficiency with temperature. Calculated kinetic and thermodynamic parameters corroborate the proposed mechanism.  相似文献

A new corrosion inhibitor, namely 5-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione (5-HTT), has been synthesized and its influence on corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 5 % HCl solution has been studied using weight loss method and electrochemical measurements. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements clearly reveal that the investigated inhibitor is of mixed type, and it inhibits the corrosion of the steel by blocking the active site of the metal. Changes in impedance parameters were indicative of adsorption of 5-HTT on the metal surface, leading to the formation of protective films. The degree of the surface coverage of the adsorbed inhibitors was determined by weight loss measurements, and it was found that the adsorption of these inhibitors on the mild steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The effect of the temperature on the corrosion behavior with addition of 5 × 10?4 M of the inhibitor was studied in the temperature range 30–60 °C. The reactivity of this compound was analyzed through theoretical calculations based on density functional theory to explain the different efficiency of these compounds as a corrosion inhibitor.  相似文献

The cationic gemini surfactant 1,2-bis(N-tetradecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium)ethane dibromide (14-2-14) was synthesized using a previously described method. The surfactant was characterized using 1H NMR. The corrosion inhibition effect of 14-2-14 on mild steel in 1 M HCl at temperatures 30–60°C was studied using weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Morphology of the corroded mild steel specimens was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of the studies show that gemini surfactant is an efficient inhibitor for mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl; the maximum inhibition efficiency (IE) of 98.06% is observed at surfactant concentration of 100 ppm at 60°C. The %IE increases with the increasing inhibitor concentration and temperature. The adsorption of inhibitor on the mild steel surface obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. SEM studies confirmed smoother surface for inhibited mild steel specimen.  相似文献

The inhibition effect of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) on the corrosion of mild steel in 1.0 mol L?1 hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been studied at different temperatures (25–60°C) by weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization methods. The results reveal that CTAB behaves as an effective inhibitor in 1.0 mol L?1 HCl, and the inhibition efficiency increases with the inhibitor concentration. Polarization curves show that CTAB is a mixed-type inhibitor in hydrochloric acid. The results obtained from weight loss and polarizations are in good agreement. The effect of immersion time on corrosion inhibition has also been examined and is discussed. The adsorption of inhibitor on mild steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation. Thermodynamic parameters have been obtained by adsorption theory. The inhibition effect is satisfactorily explained by the parameters.  相似文献

The corrosion inhibitive and adsorption behaviors of Hydroclathrus clathratus on mild steel in 1 M HCl and 1 M H2SO4 solutions at 303, 313 and 323 K were investigated by weight loss, electrochemical, and surface analysis techniques. The results show that H. clathratus acts as an inhibitor of corrosion of mild steel in acid media. The inhibition efficiency was found to increase with increase in inhibitor concentration but to decrease with rise in temperature, suggestive of physical adsorption. The adsorption of the inhibitor onto the mild steel surface was found to follow the Temkin adsorption isotherm. The inhibition mechanism was further corroborated by the results obtained from electrochemical methods. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses supported the inhibitive action of the alga against acid corrosion of mild steel.  相似文献

The essential oil of the aerial parts of Lavandula multifida L., collected in Errachidia region (three samples) in southeast Morocco, was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The oil was predominated by carvacrol (57.9–59.0%). L. multifida oil was tested as corrosion inhibitor of C38 steel in 0.5 M H2SO4 using weight loss measurements, electrochemical polarization, and EIS methods. The results obtained by measurements of weight loss showed that inhibition efficiency increases with inhibitor concentration to attain 72.2% at 2 g/l of oil at 298 K. Polarization curves revealed that L. multifida oil acts as mixed type inhibitor. The temperature effect on the corrosion behavior of steel in 0.5 M H2SO4 without and with the inhibitor at 2 g/l was studied in the temperature range from 303 and 343 K. The adsorption of inhibitor on the C38 steel surface was found to be a spontaneous process and to obey Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm. The associated activation energy has been determined.  相似文献

The inhibition action of Avogadro natural oil on corrosion of mild steel in one molar hydrochloric acid solution was investigated by gravimetric and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The surface morphology of as-corroded samples was assessed with high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (HR-STEM/EDS). From the results, the presence of Avogadro natural oil in the metal–acidic interface decreased the corrosion rate with all the exposure times. The inhibition efficiency (%IE) increases with the concentration of the inhibitor considered. Results obtained from gravimetric measurements indicate that the natural oil exhibited higher efficiencies of 93.26 % after 384 h of exposure time and 98.26 % recorded in the potentiodynamic polarization method, both at 4.5 g/v inhibitor addition. Equally, results from the linear polarization indicated higher potential value with an increase in the polarization resistance (R p) and lower current density for the inhibited samples than the uninhibited mild steel sample. The inhibitive effect of this oil was explained in view of adsorption on the metal surface. The adsorption process follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.  相似文献

2-(6-Methylpyridin-2-yl)oxazolo[5,4-f][1,10]phenanthroline (MOP) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and 13C NMR spectra. MOP was evaluated as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution using the standard gravimetric technique at 303–333 K. Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were applied to analyze the experimental data and elucidate the adsorption behavior and inhibition mechanism of MOP. Results obtained show that MOP is an efficient inhibitor for mild steel in H2SO4 solution. The inhibition efficiency was found to increase with increase in MOP concentration but decreased with temperature. Activation parameters and Gibbs free energy for the adsorption process using statistical physics were calculated and discussed. The adsorption of MOP was found to involve both physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that nitrogen and oxygen atoms present in the MOP structure were the active reaction sites for the inhibitor adsorption on mild steel surface via donor–acceptor interactions between the lone pairs on nitrogen and oxygen atoms together with the π-electrons of the heterocyclic and the vacant d-orbital of iron atoms. The adsorption of MOP on Fe (1 1 0) surface was parallel to the surface so as to maximize contact, as shown in the MD simulations. The experiments together with DFT and MD simulations provide further insight into the mechanism of interaction between MOP and mild steel.  相似文献

An extract of Mentha rotundifolia leaves (EMRL) was tested as a corrosion inhibitor of steel in 1 M HCl using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Tafel polarization methods, and weight loss measurements. The inhibition efficiency of the extract of Mentha rotundifolia leaves was calculated and compared. We note good agreement between these methods. The results obtained revealed that the inhibitor tested differently reduced the kinetics of the corrosion process of steel. Its efficiency increases with the concentration and attained 92.87 % at 35 %. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior of steel in 1 M HCl was also studied in the range 298 and 338 K. The thermodynamic data of activation were determined. Mentha rotundifolia extract is adsorbed on the steel surface according to a Langmuir adsorption model.  相似文献

In this study, 5-naphthylazo-8-hydroxyquinoline (5NA8HQ) was synthesized, characterized, and tested as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1 M HCl solution in the temperature range 20 to 50 °C. Weight-loss and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were used to analyse the corrosion behaviour of the metal in the absence and presence of different concentrations of the inhibitor. Analyses of surface film and inhibited solutions by FT-IR and UV–visible spectroscopy enabled us to clarify aspects of the inhibition mechanism. Further examination using X-ray diffraction confirmed the action of 5NA8HQ as an effective inhibitor of corrosion of mild steel in acidic media. The results obtained showed that this compound was a good inhibitor of corrosion. The inhibition is of mixed anodic–cathodic nature with predominance of anodic character. The Langmuir isotherm was found to accurately describe the adsorption behaviour of 5NA8HQ. Spectrophotometric analysis showed the formation of a layer at the surface of the corroded sample; this was interpreted as formation of complexes between 5NA8HQ and metal cations present in the steel structure.  相似文献

The corrosion inhibition of mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution in the presence of three different molecular weights of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) designated as PVA-I, PVA-II, and PVA-III corresponding to 14,000, 72,000, and 125,000 g mol?1, respectively, was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization resistance (LPR), and potentiodynamic polarization techniques at 25°C. It was found that PVA of different molecular weights inhibited the corrosion of mild steel in the acid environment. Inhibition efficiency (η%) increases with increase in concentration of the polymers. LPR measurements clearly show that inhibition efficiency increases with increasing molecular weight in the order PVA-III > PVA-II > PVA-I. Polarization curves indicate that PVA functions as a mixed inhibitor affecting both the anodic metal dissolution and cathodic hydrogen evolution partial reactions of the corrosion process. The experimental data obtained fitted well into Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Physical adsorption mechanism is proposed from the thermodynamic (free energy of adsorption) parameters obtained.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of the alkyl chain of quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants on corrosion inhibition in hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution was investigated by using dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC), tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (TTAC), cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), and octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) as corrosion inhibitors to uncover their structure–efficiency relationships. The effect of the alkyl chain of quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants on corrosion inhibition in HCl solution was studied under different conditions, such as corrosion inhibitor concentration, temperature, and acidity, and this was done using the weightlessness method. The results obtained show that these inhibitors have high corrosion inhibition effect on A3 steel, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency is dependent on the length of the alkyl chain. At the same concentration, the longer the alkyl chain, the weaker the corrosion inhibition effect. When the temperature was 50 °C and the concentration of corrosion inhibitor was 70 mg/L, the corrosion inhibition efficiency order of the four cationic surfactants was DTAC > TTAC > CTAC > OTAC. Besides, the experimental results obtained show that the adsorption of the inhibitor on the A3 steel surface conforms to the Langmuir type isotherm, and then the corresponding adsorption thermodynamic parameters were obtained according to these parameters. It was observed that ΔH, ΔS, and Ea increased with increase in the length of the alkyl chain. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the steel surface is an exothermic, spontaneous, entropy process.  相似文献

Recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) can be modified to produce nonionic surfactants. Recycling of PET waste was carried out in presence of triethanolamine and manganese acetate as catalyst. The produced oligomers were reacted with stearic acid and polyethylene glycol, PEG, which have different molecular weights 400, 1,000, and 4,000. The inhibition of corrosion of steel in 1 molar hydrochloric acid solution in the presence of the prepared surfactants is studied by weight loss and electrochemical polarization measurements. The polarization curves indicate that these compounds act as mixed‐type inhibitors. The inhibition efficiency increases with the increase of inhibitor concentration to reach their critical micelle concentrations. The temperature effect on the corrosion behavior of steel in 1 M HCl with and without surfactants is studied in the temperature range from 308 to 343 K. The adsorption of inhibitors on the steel surface is found to increase with increasing the temperature. From the adsorption isotherm, some thermodynamic data for the adsorption process are calculated and discussed.  相似文献

The effects of expired bupropion on the corrosion protection of carbon steel in hydrochloric acid (1.0 M) and sulfuric acid (0.5 M) solutions were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Bupropion concentrations in both acid solutions were raised, which improved corrosion prevention. Bupropion was a mixed inhibitor because it retarded the anodic and cathodic processes, as indicated by polarization data. The inhibition efficiency decreased with the increasing temperature from 25 to 55 °C. In the presence of bupropion, the activation energies of corrosion in both acid solutions increased. The thermodynamic quantities were deduced from the influence of temperature on the corrosion process of carbon steel in both acid media. Bupropion adsorption on carbon steel followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The polarization data yielded outcomes consistent with the results arising from impedance measurements. FTIR spectroscopy showed the active sites of bupropion molecule during adsorption on the alloy surface. The theoretical study and molecular dynamics simulation of bupropion was done by a density functional theory (DFT) approach to realize the effects of molecular structure on the inhibitive action of bupropion.  相似文献

The inhibiting effect of (NE)-4-phenoxy-N-(3-phenylallylidene) aniline (PAC) on the corrosion of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl has been studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and Tafel polarization measurements. The corrosion rate was also calculated theoretically in terms of mm per year and mil per year, using current density values of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl medium. It was found that PAC has a remarkable inhibition efficiency on the corrosion of mild steel especially at high temperatures. The values of E a obtained in presence of a Schiff base were found to be lower than those obtained in the inhibitor-free solution. The increase of inhibition efficiency percent with temperature increase was associated with the transformation of physical adsorption into chemical adsorption. The thermodynamic functions of adsorption processes have been evaluated and discussed at each temperature. Scanning electron microscope observations of the electrode surface confirmed the existence of a protective adsorbed film of the inhibitor on the electrode surface.  相似文献

The inhibition effect of a new 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triaminoethoxylate (ethoxylated melamine, MEO) on the corrosion of carbon steel in 1 M HCl was studied at 298 K. Surface activity, thermodynamic properties, and potentiodynamic polarization methods were used for the evaluation of the prepared surfactants. Results show that MEO is a good inhibitor, and inhibition efficiency reaches 91% at 500 ppm. Polarization curves revealed that this organic compound acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. The concentration effect on the corrosion behavior of steel in 1 M HCl with and without MEO at 100–500 ppm was studied at a temperature of 298 K. Additionally, the associated activation energy was determined.  相似文献

The inhibition effect of polyphenols extracted from olive mill wastewater (PP) on carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl solution was studied. Inhibition efficiency of PP was carried out by using chemical (weight loss method) and electrochemical techniques [potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)]. The effect of temperature and immersion time on the corrosion behavior of carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl with addition of an extract was also studied. The results show that PP acts as a very good inhibitor, and the inhibition efficiency increases with the concentration of PP and decreases with rising temperature. Polarization curves show that PP behaves as a mixed-type inhibitor in hydrochloric acid. Data, obtained from EIS measurements, were analyzed to model the corrosion inhibition process through an appropriate equivalent circuit model; a constant phase element has been used. EIS shows that charge-transfer resistance increases and the capacitance of double layer decreases with the inhibitor concentration, confirming the adsorption process mechanism. The activation energy as well as other thermodynamic parameters for the inhibition process were calculated. The adsorption of PP obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.  相似文献

Three new bipyrazole derivatives, ethyl 5,5′-dimethyl-1′H-1,3′-bipyrazole-4-carboxylate (Bip1), 1,1′,5,5′-tetramethyl-1H,1′H-3,3′-bipyrazole (Bip2), and 3-(bromomethyl)-5,5′-dimethyl-1′H-1,3′-bipyrazole (Bip3), have been synthesized and used as additives to protect C38 steel from corrosion in aerated 1 M HCl solution, using the various corrosion monitoring techniques such as weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All the techniques used for the studies show an increase in inhibition efficiency and decrease in the corrosion rate by increasing the inhibitor concentration. Impedance measurements showed that the double layer capacitance decreased and charge transfer resistance increased with increase in the inhibitors concentration, and hence an increase in inhibition efficiency. A potentiodynamic polarization study showed that all the inhibitors act as mixed-type. The adsorption of bipyrazole derivatives is found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the thermodynamic parameters were determined and are discussed.  相似文献

Inhibition of the corrosion of mild steel in molar hydrochloric acid by two calixarenes, including the effect of inhibitor concentration and temperature, has been investigated by use of weight loss and electrochemical measurements (polarisation and impedance). The results obtained showed that the rate of corrosion decreased substantially in the presence of the compounds, with maximum inhibition of 98.2 % by one of the compounds at a concentration of 10?3 M. The effect of temperature on corrosion behaviour in the presence of different concentrations of the two new calixarenes was studied in the range 45–75 °C. The efficiency of inhibition by the compounds increased with increasing inhibitor concentration and was independent of temperature. Polarisation curves revealed that the calixarenes are mixed-type inhibitors. Adsorption of the inhibitors by the carbon steel surface obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Some thermodynamic data for the dissolution and adsorption processes were also determined.  相似文献

Corrosion inhibition by triazole derivatives (n-MMT) on mild steel in 5 % hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions has been investigated by weight loss and electrochemical methods. The results obtained revealed that these compounds performed excellently as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in HCl solution. Potentiodynamic polarization studies showed that they suppressed both the anodic and cathodic processes and inhibited the corrosion of mild steel by blocking the active site of the metal. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in 5 % HCl with the addition of different concentrations of the inhibitors was studied in the temperature range from 303 to 333 K. The associated activation corrosion and free adsorption energies were determined. The adsorption of these compounds on the mild steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The effect of molecular structure on the inhibition efficiency has been investigated by quantum chemical calculations. The electronic properties of inhibitors were calculated and are discussed.  相似文献
