A stochastic branch-and-bound technique for the solution of stochastic single-machine-tardiness problems with job weights is presented. The technique relies on partitioning the solution space and estimating lower and upper bounds by sampling. For the lower bound estimation, two different types of sampling (“within” and “without” the minimization) are combined. Convergence to the optimal solution (with probability one) can be demonstrated. The approach is generalizable to other discrete stochastic optimization problems. In computational experiments with the single-machine-tardiness problem, the technique worked well for problem instances with a relatively small number of jobs; due to the enormous complexity of the problem, only approximate solutions can be expected for a larger number of jobs. Furthermore, a general precedence rule for the single-machine scheduling of jobs with uncertain processing times has been derived, essentially saying that “safe” jobs are to be scheduled before “unsafe” jobs.  相似文献

In this paper we develop efficient heuristic algorithms to solve the bottleneck traveling salesman problem (BTSP). Results of extensive computational experiments are reported. Our heuristics produced optimal solutions for all the test problems considered from TSPLIB, JM-instances, National TSP instances, and VLSI TSP instances in very reasonable running time. We also conducted experiments with specially constructed ‘hard’ instances of the BTSP that produced optimal solutions for all but seven problems. Some fast construction heuristics are also discussed. Our algorithms could easily be modified to solve related problems such as the maximum scatter TSP and testing hamiltonicity of a graph.  相似文献

We consider a bound for the maximum-entropy sampling problem (MESP) that is based on solving a max-det problem over a relaxation of the Boolean quadric polytope (BQP). This approach to MESP was first suggested by Christoph Helmberg over 15 years ago, but has apparently never been further elaborated or computationally investigated. We find that the use of a relaxation of BQP that imposes semidefiniteness and a small number of equality constraints gives excellent bounds on many benchmark instances. These bounds can be further tightened by imposing additional inequality constraints that are valid for the BQP. Duality information associated with the BQP-based bounds can be used to fix variables to 0/1 values, and also as the basis for the implementation of a “strong branching” strategy. A branch-and-bound algorithm using the BQP-based bounds solves some benchmark instances of MESP to optimality for the first time.  相似文献

The time dependent traveling salesman problem (TDTSP) is a generalization of the classical traveling salesman problem (TSP), where arc costs depend on their position in the tour with respect to the source node. While TSP instances with thousands of vertices can be solved routinely, there are very challenging TDTSP instances with less than 100 vertices. In this work, we study the polytope associated to the TDTSP formulation by Picard and Queyranne, which can be viewed as an extended formulation of the TSP. We determine the dimension of the TDTSP polytope and identify several families of facet-defining cuts. We obtain good computational results with a branch-cut-and-price algorithm using the new cuts, solving almost all instances from the TSPLIB with up to 107 vertices.  相似文献

The travelling salesman problem (TSP)   is one of the most prominent NP-hard combinatorial optimisation problems. After over fifty years of intense study, the TSP continues to be of broad theoretical and practical interest. Using a novel approach to empirical scaling analysis, which in principle is applicable to solvers for many other problems, we demonstrate that some of the most widely studied types of TSP instances tend to be much easier than expected from previous theoretical and empirical results. In particular, we show that the empirical median run-time required for finding optimal solutions to so-called random uniform Euclidean (RUE) instances – one of the most widely studied classes of TSP instances – scales substantially better than Θ(2n)Θ(2n) with the number n of cities to be visited. The Concorde solver, for which we achieved this result, is the best-performing exact TSP solver we are aware of, and has been applied to a broad range of real-world problems. Furthermore, we show that even when applied to a broad range of instances from the prominent TSPLIB benchmark collection for the TSP, Concorde exhibits run-times that are surprisingly consistent with our empirical model of Concorde’s scaling behaviour on RUE instances. This result suggests that the behaviour observed for the simple random structure underlying RUE is very similar to that obtained on the structured instances arising in various applications.  相似文献

Dynamic programming (DP) algorithms for the traveling salesman problem (TSP) can easily incorporate time dependent travel times, time windows, and precedence relationships which present difficulties for algorithms based on linear or nonlinear programming formulations and for many TSP heuristics. However, exact DP algorithms for the TSP have exponential storage and computational time requirements and can solve only very small problems. We present a restricted DP heuristic (a generalization of the nearest neighbor heuristic) that can include all the above considerations but solves much larger problems. The heuristic cannot guarantee optimality because only a userspecified specified number of partial tours is retained at each stage. In this paper, the heuristic is implemented for the time dependent traveling salesman problem and is tested on a personal computer on randomly generated problems. The quality of the solution improves, on average, as more computational time is permitted.  相似文献

We investigate the empirical performance of the long-standing state-of-the-art exact TSP solver Concorde on various classes of Euclidean TSP instances and show that, surprisingly, the time spent until the first optimal solution is found accounts for a large fraction of Concorde’s overall running time. This finding holds for the widely studied random uniform Euclidean (RUE) instances as well as for several other widely studied sets of Euclidean TSP instances. On RUE instances, the median fraction of Concorde’s total running time spent until an optimal solution is found ranges from 0.77 for \(n=500\) to 0.97 for \(n=3{,}500\); on TSPLIB, National and VLSI instances, we pegged it at 0.86, 0.74 and 0.61, respectively, with a tendency of even smaller values for larger instances.  相似文献

We tackle precedence-constrained sequencing on a single machine in order to minimize total weighted tardiness. Classic dynamic programming (DP) methods for this problem are limited in performance due to excessive memory requirements, particularly when the precedence network is not sufficiently dense. Over the last decades, a number of precedence theorems have been proposed, which distinguish dominant precedence constraints for a job pool that is initially without precedence relation. In this paper, we connect and extend the findings of the foregoing two strands of literature. We develop a framework for applying the precedence theorems to the precedence-constrained problem to tighten the search space, and we propose an exact DP algorithm that utilizes a new efficient memory management technique. Our procedure outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithm for instances with medium to high network density. We also empirically verify the computational gain of using different sets of precedence theorems.  相似文献

In this article we consider a variant of the classical asymmetric traveling salesman problem (ATSP), namely the ATSP in which precedence constraints require that certain nodes must precede certain other nodes in any feasible directed tour. This problem occurs as a basic model in scheduling and routing and has a wide range of applications varying from helicopter routing (Timlin, Master's Thesis, Department of Combinatorics and Optimization, University of Waterloo, 1989), sequencing in flexible manufacturing (Ascheuer et al., Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, 1990, pp. 19–28; Idem., SIAM Journal on Optimization, vol. 3, pp. 25–42, 1993), to stacker crane routing in an automatic storage system (Ascheuer, Ph.D. Thesis, Tech. Univ. Berlin, 1995). We give an integer programming model and summarize known classes of valid inequalities. We describe in detail the implementation of a branch&cut-algorithm and give computational results on real-world instances and benchmark problems from TSPLIB. The results we achieve indicate that our implementation outperforms other implementations found in the literature. Real world instances with more than 200 nodes can be solved to optimality within a few minutes of CPU-time. As a side product we obtain a branch&cut-algorithm for the ATSP. All instances in TSPLIB can be solved to optimality in a reasonable amount of computation time.  相似文献

The Sequential Ordering Problem (herewith, SOP) with precedence relationships was introduced in Escudero (1988), and extended to cover release and due dates in Escudero and Sciomachen (1993). It has a broad range of applications, mainly in production planning for manufacturing systems. The problem consists of finding a minimum weight Hamiltonian path on a directed graph with weights on the nodes and the arcs, satisfying precedence relationships among the nodes and given lower and upper bounds on the weights of the Hamiltonian subpaths. In this paper we present a model for the constrained minimum weight Hamiltonian path problem with precedences and due dates forcing constraints, and introduce related valid cuts that can be used in a separation framework for the dual (Lagrangian based) relaxation of the problem. We also provide an heuristic separation procedure to obtain those cuts, so-called the Lagrangian Relax-and-Cut (LRC) scheme. Computational experience is given for variations of some SOP cases already reported in the literature.  相似文献

The Precedence Constrained Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (PCGTSP) combines the Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP) and the Sequential Ordering Problem (SOP). We present a novel branching technique for the GTSP which enables the extension of a powerful pruning technique. This is combined with some modifications of known bounding methods for related problems. The algorithm manages to solve problem instances with 12–26 groups within a minute, and instances with around 50 groups which are denser with precedence constraints within 24 h.  相似文献

We study the integrality gap of the natural linear programming relaxation for the Bounded Color Matching (BCM) problem. We provide several families of instances and establish lower bounds on their integrality gaps and we study how the Sherali–Adams “lift-and-project” technique behaves on these instances. We complement these results by showing that if we exclude certain simple sub-structures from our input graphs, then the integrality gap of the natural linear formulation strictly improves. To prove this, we adapt for our purposes the results of Füredi (1981). We further leverage this to show upper bounds on the performance of the Sherali–Adams hierarchy when applied to the natural LP relaxation of the BCM problem.  相似文献

This paper concerns a generalization of the traveling salesman problem (TSP) called multi-commodity one-to-one pickup-and-delivery traveling salesman problem (m-PDTSP) in which cities correspond to customers providing or requiring known amounts of m different commodities, and the vehicle has a given upper-limit capacity. Each commodity has exactly one origin and one destination, and the vehicle must visit each customer exactly once. The problem can also be defined as the capacitated version of the classical TSP with precedence constraints. This paper presents two mixed integer linear programming models, and describes a decomposition technique for each model to find the optimal solution. Computational experiments on instances from the literature and randomly generated compare the techniques and show the effectiveness of our implementation.  相似文献

Bin packing with fragmentable items is a variant of the classic bin packing problem where items may be cut into smaller fragments. The objective is to minimize the number of item fragments, or equivalently, to minimize the number of cuts, for a given number of bins. Models based on packing fragmentable items are useful for representing finite shared resources. In this article, we present improvements to approximation and metaheuristic algorithms to obtain an optimality-preserving optimization algorithm with polynomial complexity, worst-case performance guarantees and parametrizable running time. We also present a new family of fast lower bounds and prove their worst-case performance ratios. We evaluate the performance and quality of the algorithm and the best lower bound through a series of computational experiments on representative problem instances. For the studied problem sets, one consisting of 180 problems with up to 20 items and another consisting of 450 problems with up to 1024 items, the lower bound performs no worse than 5 / 6. For the first problem set, the algorithm found an optimal solution in 92 % of all 1800 runs. For the second problem set, the algorithm found an optimal solution in 99 % of all 4500 runs. No run lasted longer than 220 ms.  相似文献

The paper investigates a capacitated vehicle routing problem with two objectives: (1) minimization of total travel cost and (2) minimization of the length of the longest route. We present algorithmic variants for the exact determination of the Pareto-optimal solutions of this bi-objective problem. Our approach is based on the adaptive ε-constraint method. For solving the resulting single-objective subproblems, we apply a branch-and-cut technique, using (among others) a novel implementation of Held-Karp-type bounds. Incumbent solutions are generated by means of a single-objective genetic algorithm and, alternatively, by the multi-objective NSGA-II algorithm. Experimental results for a benchmark of 54 test instances from the TSPLIB are reported.  相似文献

In this paper we study the Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) with “Feeding Precedence” (FP) constraints and minimum makespan objective. This problem typically arises in production planning environment, like make-to-order manufacturing, where the effort associated with the execution of an activity is not univocally related to its duration percentage and the traditional finish-to-start precedence constraints or the generalized precedence relations cannot completely represent the overlapping among activities. In this context, we need to introduce in the RCPSP the FP constraints. For this problem we propose a new mathematical formulation and define a lower bound based on the Lagrangian relaxation of the resource constraints. A computational experimentation on randomly generated instances of sizes of up to 100 activities shows a better performance of this lower bound when compared to other lower bounds. Moreover, for the optimally solved instances, its value is very close to the optimal one. Furthermore, in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed lower bound on large instances for which the optimal solution is known, we adapted our approach to solve the benchmarks of the basic RCPSP from the PSLIB with 120 activities.  相似文献

We introduce the time-dependent capacitated profitable tour problem with time windows and precedence constraints. This problem concerns determining a tour and its departure time at the depot that maximizes the collected profit minus the total travel cost (measured by total travel time). To deal with road congestion, travel times are considered to be time-dependent. We develop a tailored labeling algorithm to find the optimal tour. Furthermore, we introduce dominance criteria to discard unpromising labels. Our computational results demonstrate that the algorithm is capable of solving instances with up to 150 locations (75 pickup and delivery requests) to optimality. Additionally, we present a restricted dynamic programing heuristic to improve the computation time. This heuristic does not guarantee optimality, but is able to find the optimal solution for 32 instances out of the 34 instances.  相似文献

Similar to the mixed-integer programming library (MIPLIB), we present a library of publicly available test problem instances for three classical types of open pit mining problems: the ultimate pit limit problem and two variants of open pit production scheduling problems. The ultimate pit limit problem determines a set of notional three-dimensional blocks containing ore and/or waste material to extract to maximize value subject to geospatial precedence constraints. Open pit production scheduling problems seek to determine when, if ever, a block is extracted from an open pit mine. A typical objective is to maximize the net present value of the extracted ore; constraints include precedence and upper bounds on operational resource usage. Extensions of this problem can include (i) lower bounds on operational resource usage, (ii) the determination of whether a block is sent to a waste dump, i.e., discarded, or to a processing plant, i.e., to a facility that derives salable mineral from the block, (iii) average grade constraints at the processing plant, and (iv) inventories of extracted but unprocessed material. Although open pit mining problems have appeared in academic literature dating back to the 1960s, no standard representations exist, and there are no commonly available corresponding data sets. We describe some representative open pit mining problems, briefly mention related literature, and provide a library consisting of mathematical models and sets of instances, available on the Internet. We conclude with directions for use of this newly established mining library. The library serves not only as a suggestion of standard expressions of and available data for open pit mining problems, but also as encouragement for the development of increasingly sophisticated algorithms.  相似文献
