We prove several variations on the results of F. Ricci and G. Travaglini (2001), concerning bounds for convolution with all rotations of arc length measure on a fixed convex curve in . Estimates are obtained for averages over higher-dimensional convex (nonsmooth) hypersurfaces, smooth -dimensional surfaces, and nontranslation-invariant families of surfaces. We compare Ricci and Travaglini's approach, based on average decay of the Fourier transform, with an approach based on boundedness of Fourier integral operators, and show that essentially the same geometric condition arises in proofs using the two techniques.

We prove that for any real expansive matrix , there exists a bounded -dilation wavelet set in the frequency domain (the inverse Fourier transform of whose characteristic function is a band-limited single wavelet in the time domain ). Moreover these wavelet sets can approximate a cube in arbitrarily. This result improves Dai, Larson and Speegle's result about the existence of (basically unbounded) wavelet sets for real expansive matrices.

Some orthogonal functions can be mapped onto other orthogonal functions by the Fourier transform. In this paper, by using the Fourier transform of Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials, we derive a sequence of exponential functions that are biorthogonal with respect to a complex weight function like on . Then we restrict these introduced biorthogonal functions to a special case to obtain a sequence of trigonometric functions orthogonal with respect to the real weight function on .

Let be an odd prime number. In this article we study the distribution of -class groups of cyclic number fields of degree , and of cyclic extensions of degree of an imaginary quadratic field whose class number is coprime to . We formulate a heuristic principle predicting the distribution of the -class groups as Galois modules, which is analogous to the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics concerning the prime-to--part of the class group, although in our case we have to fix the number of primes that ramify in the extensions considered. Using results of Gerth we are able to prove part of this conjecture. Furthermore, we present some numerical evidence for the conjecture.

In this note we show that the well-posedness range for transmission boundary value problems for the Laplacian in the class of Lipschitz domains established by Escauriaza and Mitrea (2004) is sharp. Our approach relies on Mellin transform techniques for singular integrals naturally associated with the transmission problems and on a careful analysis of the spectra of such singular integrals.

For a prime we describe an algorithm for computing the Brandt matrices giving the action of the Hecke operators on the space of modular forms of weight and level . For we define a special Hecke stable subspace of which contains the space of modular forms with CM by the ring of integers of and we describe the calculation of the corresponding Brandt matrices.

The caustics of Fourier integral operators are defined as caustics of the corresponding Schwartz kernels (Lagrangian distributions on ). The caustic set of the canonical relation is characterized as the set of points where the rank of the projection is smaller than its maximal value, . We derive the estimates on Fourier integral operators with caustics of corank (such as caustics of type , ). For the values of and outside of a certain neighborhood of the line of duality, , the estimates are proved to be caustics-insensitive.

We apply our results to the analysis of the blow-up of the estimates on the half-wave operator just before the geodesic flow forms caustics.

The double Fourier series of functions of the generalized bounded variation class are shown to be Pringsheim convergent everywhere. In a certain sense, this result cannot be improved. In general, functions of class defined here, have quadrant limits at every point and, for there exist at most countable sets and such that, for and is continuous at . It is shown that the previously studied class contains essentially discontinuous functions unless the sequence satisfies a strong condition.

We derive continuity of Fourier integral operators with one-sided fold singularities. The argument is based on interpolation of (asymptotics of) estimates and estimates. We derive the latter estimates elaborating arguments of Seeger, Sogge, and Stein's 1991 paper.

We apply our results to the study of the regularity properties of the restrictions of solutions to hyperbolic equations onto timelike hypersurfaces and onto hypersurfaces with characteristic points.

We investigate algebraic -actions of entropy rank one, namely those for which each element has finite entropy. Such actions can be completely described in terms of diagonal actions on products of local fields using standard adelic machinery. This leads to numerous alternative characterizations of entropy rank one, both geometric and algebraic. We then compute the measure entropy of a class of skew products, where the fiber maps are elements from an algebraic -action of entropy rank one. This leads, via the relative variational principle, to a formula for the topological entropy of continuous skew products as the maximum of a finite number of topological pressures. We use this to settle a conjecture concerning the relational entropy of commuting toral automorphisms.

The notion of stability of the highest local cohomology module with respect to the Frobenius functor originates in the work of R. Hartshorne and R. Speiser. R. Fedder and K.-i. Watanabe examined this concept for isolated singularities by relating it to -rationality. The purpose of this note is to study what happens in the case of non-isolated singularities and to show how this stability concept encapsulates a few of the subtleties of tight closure theory. Our study can be seen as a generalization of the work by Fedder and Watanabe. We introduce two new ring invariants, the -stability number and the set of -stable primes. We associate to every ideal generated by a system of parameters and an ideal of multipliers denoted and obtain a family of ideals . The set is independent of and consists of finitely many prime ideals. It also equals prime ideal such that is -stable. The maximal height of such primes defines the -stability number.

We investigate the relations between the cut number, and the first Betti number, of -manifolds We prove that the cut number of a ``generic' -manifold is at most This is a rather unexpected result since specific examples of -manifolds with large and are hard to construct.
