The wake of a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder and the associated vortex patterns are strongly dependent on the cylinder aspect ratio and the thickness of the boundary layer on the ground plane relative to the dimensions of the cylinder. Above a critical aspect ratio, the mean wake is characterized by streamwise tip vortex structures and Kármán vortex shedding from the sides of the cylinder. Below a critical aspect ratio, a unique mean wake structure is observed. Recent experimental studies in the literature that used phase-averaged techniques, as well as recent numerical simulations, have led to an improved physical understanding of the near-wake vortex flow patterns. However, the flow above the free end of the finite circular cylinder, and its relationship to the near wake, has not been systematically studied. The effects of aspect ratio and boundary layer thickness on the free-end flow field are also not completely understood, nor has the influence of Reynolds number on the free-end flow field been fully explored. Common features associated with the free end include separation from the leading edge, a mean recirculation zone containing a prominent cross-stream arch (or mushroom) vortex, and reattachment onto the free-surface. Other flow features that remain to be clarified include a separation bubble near the leading edge, one or two cross-stream vortices within this separation bubble, the origins of the streamwise tip or trailing vortices, and various critical points in the near-surface flow topology. This paper reviews the current understanding of the flow above the free end of a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder, with a focus on models of the flow field, surface oil flow visualization studies, pressure and heat flux distributions on the free-end surface, measurements of the local velocity field, and numerical simulations, found in the literature.

The flow above the free end of a surface-mounted finite-height cylinder was studied in a low-speed wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Velocity measurements were made in vertical and horizontal measurement planes above the free end of finite cylinders of aspect ratios AR = 9, 7, 5 and 3, at a Reynolds number of Re = 4.2 × 104. The relative thickness of the boundary layer on the ground plane was δ/D = 1.7. Flow separating from the leading edge formed a prominent recirculation zone on the free-end surface. The legs of the mean arch vortex contained within the recirculation zone terminate on the free-end surface on either side of the centreline. Separated flow from the leading edge attaches onto the upper surface of the cylinder along a prominent attachment line. Local separation downstream of the leading edge is also induced by the reverse flow and arch vortex circulation within the recirculation zone. As the cylinder aspect ratio is lowered from AR = 9 to AR = 3, the thickness of the recirculation zone increases, the arch vortex centre moves downstream and higher above the free-end surface, the attachment position moves downstream, and the termination points of the arch vortex move upstream. A lowering of the aspect ratio therefore results in accentuated curvature of the arch vortex line. Changes in aspect ratio also influence the vorticity generation in the near-wake region and the shape of the attachment line.

The flow structure around the free-end region of two adjacent finite circular cylinders embedded in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) was investigated experimentally. The experiments were carried out in a closed-return-type subsonic wind tunnel, in which two finite cylinders with an aspect ratio of 6 were mounted vertically on a flat plate in a side-by-side arrangement. The Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was about Re=2×104. Systems with gap ratios (i.e., center-to-center distance/cylinder diameter) in the range 1.0–2.0 were investigated. A hot-wire anemometer was employed to measure the wake velocity, and the mean pressure distribution on the cylinder surface was also measured. The flow past two finite cylinders was found to have a complicated three-dimensional wake structure in the region near the free ends. As the gap ratio increases, regular vortex-shedding becomes dominant, but the length of the vortex formation region decreases. The pressure distribution and flow structure around two cylinders were found to differ substantially from the behavior of a two-dimensional circular cylinder due to mutual interference. The three-dimensional flow structure seems to originate from the strong entrainment of irrotational fluids caused by the downwash counter-rotating vortices separated from the finite cylinder (FC) free ends.

Unsteady vortex structures and vorticity convection over the airfoil (NACA 0012), oscillating in the uniform inflow, are studied by flow visualization and velocity measurements. The airfoil, pivoting at one-third of the chord, oscillates periodically near the static stalling angle of attack (AOA) at high reduced-frequency. The phase-triggering and modified phase-averaged techniques are employed to reconstruct the pseudo instantaneous velocity field over the airfoil. During the down stroke cycle, the leading-edge separation vortex is growing and the vortex near the trailing edge begins to shed into the wake. During the upstroke cycle, the leading-edge separation vortex is matured and moves downstream, and the counter clockwise vortex is forming near the trailing edge. Convection speeds and wavelength of the unsteady vortex structure over the airfoil equal to that of the counter clockwise vortex shed into the wake. This kind of vortex structure is termed as “synchronized shedding” type. The wavelength of unsteady vortex structure over the airfoil is significantly different from that at low reduced-frequency. Consistent convection speeds of the leading-edge separation vortex are acquired from the spatial-temporal variations of local circulation and local surface vorticity generation, and equals that predicted from flow visualization. Spatial-temporal variations of the local surface vorticity generation clearly reveal the formation and passage of the leading-edge separation vortex only in the region where the flow does not separate completely from the surface. Significant amounts of the surface vorticity are generated within the leading-edge region of the airfoil during the upstroke cycle. Only negligible amount of surface vorticity is produced within the region of complete flow separation. During the down stroke cycle, the surface vorticity generation is mild along the airfoil surface, except the leading-edge region where a small scale leading-edge separation vortex is forming and growing.

Topological aspects of the turbulent wake of a finite, surface-mounted, square-cross-section cylinder of h/d = 4 are addressed by decomposing the velocity field into a quasi-periodic coherent part and the unresolved incoherent fluctuations. The three-dimensional large scale structure is educed through a reconstruction of planar phase-averaged PIV measurements using the simultaneously sampled surface pressure difference on opposing sides of the obstacle as a phase reference. A topological model for the vortex structure is educed and mean streamwise wake vorticity is explained in terms of the connections between initially vertical structures shed alternately from either side of the obstacle, rather than previously proposed ‘tip’ vortex structures generated at the obstacle free-end. The coherent structure educed accounts for a significant portion of the fluctuating energy in the wake. The turbulent field is further analyzed by finding Lagrangian straining structures that form by induction of the coherent vorticity field, and these structures are related to the energy transfer from the base phase-averaged flow since they act to stretch incoherent vorticity fluctuations in their neighbourhood.

This paper presents a large eddy simulation of forced convection heat transfer in the flow around a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder. The study was carried out for a cylinder with height-to-diameter ratio of 2.5, a Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter of 44 000 and a Prandtl number of 1. Only the surface of the cylinder is heated while the bottom wall and the inflow are kept at a lower fixed temperature. The approach flow boundary layer had a thickness of about 10% of the cylinder height. Local and averaged heat transfer coefficients are presented. The heat transfer coefficient is strongly affected by the free-end of the cylinder. As a result of the flow over the top being downwashed behind the cylinder, a vortex-shedding process does not occur in the upper part, leading to a lower value of the local heat transfer coefficient in that region. In the lower region, vortex-shedding takes place leading to higher values of the local heat transfer coefficient. The circumferentially averaged heat transfer coefficient is 20 % higher near the ground than near the top of the cylinder. The spreading and dilution of the mean temperature field in the wake of the cylinder are also discussed.

The vortex formation and shedding process in the near wake region of a 2D square-section cylinder at incidence has been investigated by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV). Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to characterize the coherent large-scale flow unsteadiness that is associated with the wake vortex shedding process. A particular application of the POD analysis is to extract the vortex-shedding phase of individual velocity fields, which were acquired at asynchronous low rate with respect to the vortex shedding cycle. The phase of an individual flow field is determined from its projection on the first pair of POD modes, allowing phase averaging of the measurement data to be performed. In addition, a low-order representation of the flow, constructed from the mean and the first pair of POD modes, is found to be practically equivalent to the phase-averaged results. It is shown that this low-order representation corresponds to the basic Fourier component of the flow field ensemble with respect to the reconstructed phase. The phase-averaged flow representations reveal the dominant flow features of the vortex-shedding process and the effect of the angle of incidence upon it.

The turbulent flow field around a circular cylinder
The flow field around a circular cylinder mounted vertically on a flat bottom has been investigated experimentally. This type of flow occurs in several technical applications, e.g. local scouring around bridge piers. Hydrogen bubble flow visualization was carried out for Reynolds numbers ranging from 6,600 to 65,000. The main flow characteristic upstream of the cylinder is a system of horse-shoe vortices which are shed quasi-periodically. The number of vortices depends on Reynolds number. The vortex system was found to be independent of the vortices that are shed in the wake of the cylinder. The topology of the separated flow contains several separation and attachment lines which are Reynolds number dependent. In the wake region different flow patterns exist for each constant Reynolds number.

Three-dimensional numerical modeling using Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) based on unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) with the k–ω SST (Shear-Stress Transport) turbulence model has been carried out to evaluate the characteristics of a shallow wake flow. The shallow wake is generated by inserting a sharp-edged bluff body in the open channel flow. A horseshoe vortex is captured in front of the body, which stretches downstream and envelops the vortices that form part of the shear layers. The mean and instantaneous flow field characteristics in the wake are examined and compared at different downstream locations to evaluate the three-dimensional features in the flow. Streamwise positive directed velocity is observed in the wake centerline at horizontal planes close to the bed. Flow features hitherto not captured in experimental studies can be identified in sections parallel to the bed and body. A typical signature of three-dimensionality, upward ejection of fluid elements from the bed towards the free surface, is also observed in the wake.

Toward getting the vortex dynamics characteristics and wake structure of a sphere in proximity to a wall, the effect of a proximal flat plate on the wake of a stationary sphere is investigated via direct numerical simulation. The vortex shedding process and the significant variation of the wake structure are described in detail. The drag coefficient reduces and the wake structure of the sphere becomes complex due to the combined effect of the wake flow and the wall. A jet flow forms between the sphere and the flat plate, which suppresses the vortex separation on the bottom of the sphere. The asymmetric distributions of the coherent structures and the recirculation region behind the sphere are discussed. Besides vortex shedding patterns, the time-averaged velocity distribution, vortex dynamics, distribution regularities of turbulent kinetic energy and enstrophy are investigated.

The problem of irrotational flow past a wing of finite thickness and finite span can be reduced by Green's formula to the solution of a system of Fredholm equations of the second kind on the surface of the wing [1]. The wake vortex sheet is represented by a free vortex surface. Besides panel methods (see, for example, [2]) there are also methods of approximate solution of this problem based on a preliminary discretization of the solution along the span of the wing in which the two-dimensional integral equations are reduced to a system of one-dimensional integral equations [1], for which numerical methods of solution have already been developed [3–6]. At the same time, a discretization is also realized for the wake vortex sheet along the span of the wing. In the present paper, this idea of numerical solution of the problem of irrotational flow past a wing of finite span is realized on the basis of an approximation of the unknown functions which is piecewise linear along the span. The wake vortex sheet is represented by vortex filaments [7] in the nonlinear problem. In the linear problem, the sheet is represented both by vortex filaments and by a vortex surface. Examples are given of an aerodynamic calculation for sweptback wings of finite thickness with a constriction, and the results of the calculation are also compared with experimental results.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 124–131, October–December, 1981.

A numerical study on the flow past a square cylinder placed parallel to a wall, which is moving at the speed of the far field has been made. Flow has been investigated in the laminar Reynolds number (based on the cylinder length) range. We have studied the flow field for different values of the cylinder to wall separation length. The governing unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are discretized through the finite volume method on a staggered grid system. A SIMPLE type of algorithm has been used to compute the discretized equations iteratively. A shear layer of negative vortex generates along the surface of the wall, which influences the vortex shedding behind the cylinder. The flow‐field is distinct from the flow in presence of a stationary wall. An alternate vortex shedding occurs for all values of gap height in the unsteady regime of the flow. The strong positive vortex pushes the negative vortex upwards in the wake. The gap flow in the undersurface of the cylinder is strong and the velocity profile overshoots. The cylinder experiences a downward force for certain values of the Reynolds number and gap height. The drag and lift are higher at lower values of the Reynolds number. Vortex shedding resonance of a circular cylinder wake to a forced rotational oscillation has been investigated experimentally by measuring the velocity fluctuations in the wake, pressure distributions over the cylinder surface, and visualizing the flow field with respect to cylinder oscillations. The vortex shedding resonance occurs near the natural shedding frequency at small amplitude of cylinder oscillations, while the peak resonance frequency shifts to a lower value with an increase in oscillation amplitude. The drag and lift forces acting on the cylinder at fixed forcing Strouhal number indicate that the phase lag of fluid forces to the cylinder oscillations increases with an increase in oscillation amplitude, supporting the variation of resonance frequency with oscillation amplitude. The comparative study of the measured pressure distributions and the simultaneous flow visualizations with respect to cylinder rotation shows the mechanisms of phase lag, which is due to the strengthened vortex formation and the modification of the surface pressure distributions.

The wake behind T-shaped intersecting flat plates has been studied by direct numerical simulations and compared with the wake behind intersecting plates forming a cross. The Reynolds number based on the uniform inflow velocity and the plate width d was 1000. Similar to the cross-plate the vortex shedding was suppressed in a 4d wide intersection region with a substantial base suction pressure reduction. Shear-layer (K-H) instabilities have been observed and its characteristic frequency obtained. In contrast to the cross-plate, a main feature of the mean wake structure behind the T-plate is the formation of two symmetrically positioned swirling vortices close to the internal corners of the T. This was examined by considering pressure contours and the turbulent production terms of mean streamwise vorticity. In spite of some similarities, major features of the wake behind the T-plate turned out to be distinctly different from the wake behind a cross-plate configuration.

The time-averaged velocity and streamwise vorticity fields within the wake of a stack were investigated in a low-speed wind tunnel using a seven-hole pressure probe. The experiments were conducted at a Reynolds number, based on the stack external diameter, of ReD=2.3×104. The stack, of aspect ratio AR=9, was mounted normal to a ground plane and was partially immersed in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer, where the ratio of the boundary layer thickness to the stack height was δ/H≈0.5. The jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratio was varied from R=0 to 3, which covered the downwash, crosswind-dominated and jet-dominated flow regimes. In the downwash and crosswind-dominated flow regimes, two pairs of counter-rotating streamwise vortex structures were identified within the stack wake. The tip vortex pair located close to the free end of the stack, and the base vortex pair located close to the ground plane within the flat-plate boundary layer, were similar to those found in the wake of a finite circular cylinder, and were associated with the upwash and downwash flow fields within the stack wake, respectively. In the jet-dominated flow regime, a third pair of streamwise vortex structures was observed, referred to as the jet-wake vortex pair, which occurred within the jet-wake region above the free end of the stack. The jet-wake vortex pair had the same orientation as the base vortex pair and was associated with the jet rise. The peak vorticity and strength of the streamwise vortex structures were functions of the jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratio. For the tip vortex structures, their peak vorticity and strength reduced as the jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratio increased.

Many studies have been made of the nonstationary flow of an ideal incompressible fluid around a lifting surface. The present state of the numerical methods of solution of this problem is reviewed in [1]. The present paper studies three-dimensional nonstationary flow around a lifting surface which undergoes deformation and behind which a wake vortex surface is formed. The lifting and wake vortex surfaces are represented in parametric form. The metrics of these surfaces are used, and the introduced vortex function is approximated by bicubic splines. For the convenient application of the theory developed here to the flapping flight of insects, for which it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the lateral and trailing edges of the wings, the following terminology is introduced. The part of the edge of the lifting surface from which the wake vortex surface is shed is called the trailing edge. The remaining part is called the leading edge. On the leading edge, the velocity has a singularity. Test calculations have demonstrated the effectiveness of the method.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 72–79, July–August, 1980.

Several theoretical and experimental studies of supersonic flow past a blunt body located in the wake behind another body have been made [1–7]. It has been shown that a reverse-circulation flow can occur in the shock layer at the front surface. The possibility of such a flow forming depends on the nonuniformity of the freestream flow and the Reynolds number. This paper presents new results of the theoretical study of the structure of the shock wave at the front surface of such a sphere, obtained on the basis of numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations. It is shown that for a fixed nonuniformity of the freestream flow, an increase in the Reynolds number and cooling of the surface of the body lead to the formation of a secondary vortex in the region where the contour of the body intersects the axis of symmetry. A study is made of the variations of the drag and heat transfer parameters over the front surface of a cooled and thermally insulated sphere. The possibility of numerical simulation of the flow on the basis of the Euler equations is discussed.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 3, pp. 143–148, May–June, 1985.
