A priori estimates are obtained for the truncation error of continued fractions of the formK(1/b n ), with complex elementsb n . The method employed is based on the calculation of bounds for successive diameters of a sequence of nested disks, where then-th approximant of the continued fraction is contained in then-th disk. Numerical examples are given to illustrate useful procedures and typical error estimates for continued fraction expansions of the complex logarithm and the ratio of consecutive Bessel functions.This research was supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. GP-9009 and by the United States Air Force through the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under Grant No. AFOSR-70-1888.  相似文献

Summary We consider a class of infinite delay equations of neutral type which includes Volterrra type integral und integrodifferential equations. Using abstract approximation results (cf. Trotter-Kato-type) for strongly continuous semigroups we develop an approximation scheme which is based on approximation of the system state by Laguerre (and Legendre) polynomials. Summary In an earlier paper [3] a nonparametric analogue of the hypothesis of parallelism of population profiles was formulated for several multivariate populations and asymptotically distribution-free tests were proposed. This formulation was primarily focussed on thelocation characteristics of the populations. We now extend the concept to consider the parallelism of populationscalar profiles. A class of asymptotically distribution-free tests based on generalizedU-statistics is studied as regards consistency and asymptotic power from scalar point of view. Summary Consider the solution of one-dimensional linear initial-boundary value problems by a finite element method of lines using a piecewiseP th -degree polynomial basis. A posteriori estimates of the discretization error are obtained as the solutions of either local parabolic or local elliptic finite element problems using piecewise polynomial corrections of degreep+1 that vanish at element ends. Error estimates computed in this manner are shown to converge in energy under mesh refinement to the exact finite element discretization error. We describe an adaptive mesh refinement finite element method-of-lines procedure for solving one-dimensional parabolic partial differential equations. Solutions are calculated using Galerkin's method with a piecewise hierarchical polynomial basis in space and singly implicit Runge-Kutta (SIRK) methods in time. A modified SIRK formulation eliminates a linear systems solution that is required by the traditional SIRK formulation and leads to a new reduced-order interpolation formula. Stability and temporal error estimation techniques allow acceptance of approximate solutions at intermediate stages, yielding increased efficiency when solving partial differential equations. A priori energy estimates of the local discretization error are obtained for a nonlinear scalar problem. A posteriori estimates of local spatial discretization errors, obtained by order variation, are used with the a priori error estimates to control the adaptive mesh refinement strategy. This paper presents and justifies a Newton iterative process for finding zeros of functions admitting a certain type of approximation. This class includes smooth functions as well as nonsmooth reformulations of variational inequalities. Terminal constraint optimal control problems with unbounded control operators are considered. It is shown that the optimal solutions can be represented in a feedback form via a solution of an appropriate Riccati equation. Summary Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of a finite measure which is equivalent to a given measure and invariant with respect to each transformation in a given commutative semigroup of measurable null-invariant point transformations. This result was already known for denumerably generated semigroups.
