The theoretical and experimental investigations of the penetration of charged particles in matter played a very important role in the development of modern physics. Solid state nuclear track detectors have become one of the most important tools for many branches of science and technology. An attempt has been made to examine the suitability of the single-sheet particle identification technique in CR-39 and CN-85 polycarbonate by plotting track cone length vs. residual range for different heavy ions in these detectors. So, the maximum etchable ranges of heavy ions such as 93Nb, 86Kr and 4He in CR-39 and 4He and 132Xe in CN-85 polycarbonate have been determined. The ranges of these ions in these detectors have also been computed theoretically using the Henke-Benton program. A reasonably good agreement has been observed between the experimentally and theoretically computed values.   相似文献

The response of PN3 and CR-39 personal dosemeters with different configurations, developed by the IReS (Strasbourg), the IPNO (Orsay) and the UAB (Barcelona) groups, is investigated in this study. Both dosemeters were mounted on a water-filled phantom and were simultaneously exposed under different incidence angles (0, 30 and 60) to the following: (i) three ISO neutron sources (241Am-Be, bare 252Cf and moderated 252Cf with Cd shielding), and (ii) two realistic neutron sources (SIGMA and moderated 252Cf) at the IRSN (Cadarache) facilities. After irradiation, the plastic detectors were etched and evaluated according to local routine procedures and corrections for the effect of source-to-detector distance were taken into account. A comparison of the average background, the minimum detectable dose equivalent and the field calibration factor is performed as well.  相似文献

Extensive data have been gathered since the early 1990s on the response of different detectors based on the registration of neutron-induced fission in bismuth, gold, tantalum by the spark replica counter and the thin film breakdown counter. These detectors make it possible to exploit the excellent characteristics of the fission reactions in bismuth, gold and tantalum for the measurements of high-energy neutrons.

Most of the investigations have been carried out at the quasi-monoenergetic neutron beam facility at The Svedberg Laboratory-TSL of the Uppsala University in cooperation with the Khlopin Radium Institute (KRI).

The responses of different fission detectors in the intermediate range of neutron energy (35–180 MeV) have been evaluated: a region where the predictive power of available nuclear reaction models and codes is not reliable yet. For neutron energy greater than 200 MeV, the fission-detector responses have been derived from the data of the proton fission cross-sections.

Finally, by using the ratio of the responses of these detectors, a simple and accurate way to evaluate the spectrum hardness can be obtained, thus providing a tool to obtain spectral information needed for neutron dosimetry without the need to know the entire spectrum.

The experimentally measured spectra obtained to-date have different shapes and they are also different from those calculated.

In this paper, a new approach will be reported to analyse the existing spectra by using response ratios of different detectors. Preliminary data have been already obtained for the high-energy neutron spectrum from the CERN concrete facility.  相似文献

Low dose cell culture irradiation experiments have been carried out at the filtered beam of Budapest Research Reactor for several years. The aim of the present study is to provide along with the macroscopically determinable “dose”, more detailed information on the components of the radiation affecting the cells. For this purpose CR-39 detectors with several types of radiator and absorber materials were mounted in different geometrical arrangements on the walls of the cell holder flasks and irradiated under the same conditions as those of the cells. With these detectors individual particles can be investigated using an image analyser and the effect of thermal, intermediate and fast neutrons hitting the cells, the protons induced by neutrons in the wall of the flasks, backscattered by the medium and by the surroundings can be studied. The methods, results of the measurements and dose calculations will be presented.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to explore the possibility of using solid state nuclear track detectors for the estimation of gamma and neutron doses based on the use of changes in activation energy of degradation of these detectors, due to irradiation (gamma-neutron), as a means of dosimetry. Thermogravimetry (TG) has been applied as a tool for these studies carried out on Lexan and CR-39 track detectors. A linear relationship observed between the decrease in activation energy and the dose (gamma-neutron) received by the detectors suggests the possibility of the use of these detectors as gamma and neutron dosimeters.   相似文献

Fission-track registration characteristics of Lexan solid state nuclear track detectors have been used to measure the fast neutron induced fission cross section of232Th. The fast neutrons (?14.2MeV) were produced with the help of an AN-400 model Van-de-Graaff accelerator at Banaras Hindu University laboratory using3H(2H,n)4He reaction and were used to irradiate the fissile target deposited on the plastic detector. The track densityT, registered on the plastic detector is related to the fission cross sectionσ f, through the relationT=knσ føt wheren is the number of fissile atoms per cm2 in the deposit, ø is the neutron flux,k is fission track registration efficiency andt is the time of irradiation. The fission cross sectionσ f of232Th, relative to the well measured fission cross section of238U, was found to be 0.36±0.04 barn.  相似文献

Uranium trace characterization of crystalline GeS, sputtered thin films of GeS and amorphous SiH on quartz substrates, and crystalline p-type Si using the technique of solid state nuclear track detectors is reported. Concentration and distribution of uranium in these materials studied are presented. Using uranium as microprobe, it is observed that uranium prefers to be in the cleavage planes of GeS crystals. There seems to be a link between uranium concentration and the thermally induced defects in Si.  相似文献

Abstract

Solid-state nuclear track detectors, made of Cd doped AgCl crystals, are commonly prepared by rolling into the form of thin foils. Subsequent long-term relaxation is however needed to obtain good quality tracks. The present communication shows for the first time that this detector “ageing” is reflected in lowtemperature (77 K) luminescence spectra. Maximum of the emission band shows a slow (lasting for ~ 100 hours) blue shift, the magnitude of which (as much as 25 nm) depends on the compression ratio caused by the rolling. The shift is believed to be due to the rearrangement of Cd++ ions around freshly introduced dislocations. This finding opens the possibility of monitoring non-destructively the process of detector ageing and to determine the minimum time required for saturation.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of the influence of soft X-ray radiation on craters induced in SSNTDs by energetic α particles and protons of energy in the MeV range. We checked two detectors of the PM-355 and CR-39 types in order to verify and compare their resistance to the harsh conditions of high-temperature plasma experiments. To determine this effect some detector samples were first irradiated with α particles emitted from natural α particle sources and protons delivered by a particle accelerator. After that these samples were exposed to soft X ray radiation emitted from an X ray tube and also from the PF-1000 Plasma Focus facility. Doses during X ray irradiations varied from 0 up to tens of kGy. The irradiated samples were then etched in steps and track diameters were determined versus the absorbed dose and etching time and compared with those measured in samples not exposed to X ray radiation.  相似文献

The calibration diagrams, i.e. track diameters and track depths versus ion energy and etching time, as obtained for PM-355 track detector irradiated with He-ions are presented. The both detector characteristics are compared. The track etch rate is determined by two methods, as a function of the etch pit depth and the ion energy loss.  相似文献

Crystalline AgCl:Cd2+ thin foils (Cd2+ concentration 62.5 – 5000 ppm) were studied by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy in temperature range 20 – 80K using a mechanical phoroscope. Simple method is presented how to use the photoluminescence behaviour to check suitability of AgCl:Cd2+ foils to record high-energy particles tracks.  相似文献

The angular distribution of fission fragments in alpha induced fission has been studied at an incident energy of 55 MeV in197Au target. The relative differential fission cross sections were measured at different angles between 10° and 170° and the resulting angular distributions fitted by least squares method with Legendre polynomials. In the present work, a correction for the self-scattering and self-absorption of fission fragments in the target itself was applied and a target of 3 mg/cm2 was used to get good statistics. The anisotropy for 55 MeV alpha induced fission of gold was 2·83±0·43 and the fission cross section calculated by integrating the measured angular distributions over all the solid angles was 5·2±1.0 mb, confirming the value of 4·0±0·05 mb reported by Burnettet al but contrary to the high value of 10±3 mb reported by Ralarosyet al.  相似文献

Neutron sources like 241Am–Be, 239Pu–Be, 252Cf and 14.6 MeV neutron generator are being used in oil exploration industries as well as in research institutions. While handling these neutron sources, personnel may be exposed to neutrons. Also personnel working in reactors, accelerators may receive dose from neutrons. These exposed individuals need to be monitored regularly for measurement of neutron doses. The individual neutron doses can be estimated by using Kodak NTA films and CR-39 Solid State Nuclear Track Detector with a polyethylene radiator to increase sensitivity in front in holder. Nearly 1450 personnel are being monitored regularly throughout the country on a quarterly basis. In India, the monitoring system adopted for individual neutron dose estimation having energy from 100 keV and above is described in this paper. Background counts of 0.20 mSv could be measured with CR-39 SSNTD foil system and it has been successfully introduced for Fast Neutron Personnel Monitoring for the country.  相似文献

The method of solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) has been used for the determination of uranium dioxide distribution in silicate compositions. The method of -radiography based on registration of - particles at the contact of SSNTD CR-39 with the specimen has been used here. An initial uranium dioxide applied for studying the dissolving process used as the standard. The results of the measurements of distribution of uranium dioxide concentration obtained with the help of this technique have been used for the estimation of diffusion and solubility of UO2 in silicate melts.  相似文献

Three options of the method to determine microconcentrations of fissile materials in water solutions are developed. They utilize plastic track detectors to measure concentrations. The options are as follows a “wet” method, “thin-layer inorganic sorbent-plastic track detectors”, and a method of selective extraction and coprecipitation. These methods are used to check up fuel cladding integrity at the research reactor IVV-2M and liquid radioactive waste contamination by uranium and plutonium at the Beloyarskaya Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP).  相似文献

The paper presents an additional acceleration system, used to shift up an ion energy spectrum by 20 keV, and some examples of the ion parabolas registered by means of a Thomson-type spectrometer within the rod plasma injector (RPI-60) facility, designed for plasma physics and application studies. The use of the described acceleration system and CR-39 track detectors has enabled the registration of ions of energy above 20 keV to be performed. It made possible to measure the ion (e.g. deuteron) energy spectrum more exactly in the low-energy range, what is important for the determination of ion emission characteristics.  相似文献

In the interaction of relativistic protons with heavy and extended targets such as lead, large number of neutrons is produced in the course of the so-called spallation process. These neutrons can be used to drive a sub-critical nuclear assembly for energy generation and/or for the transmutation of the long-lived nuclear waste isotopes to environmentally safer nuclear species. Such nuclear assemblies are referred to as accelerator driven systems (ADS).

Knowledge of the neutron yield in the spallation process and an understanding of the behaviour of these neutrons in the desired sub-critical assembly are the most important and determining factors in the design and operation of these systems. Many parameters related to the neutronics of an ADS can be studied qualitatively as well as quantitatively using solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD). In some circumstances SSNTDs provide the best and the most logical detector option for these investigations.

In this paper applications of the SSNTDs into research related to ADS are discussed and some experimental and theoretical results presented.  相似文献

Radon alpha activity concentration has been measured in 28 homes in the Erbil Capital-Iraqi Kurdistan region during the autumn season by using time-integrated passive radon dosimeters containing CR-39 solid state nuclear track detectors “SSNTDs”. The radon activity concentrations in these homes range from (10.33–90.34) with an average of . The average absorption effective dose equivalent for a person living in homes for which the investigation were done was found to be , obtained by using an equilibrium factor of 0.5 and an occupancy factor of 0.8. The average lung cancer cases per year per 106 person was found to be 23±12.  相似文献

Experiments have been carried out to detect 2 3He particles and : rotons having energies up to 10 MeV/nucleon by using Kodak CA80-15, cellulose nitrate plastic track detector. Various etching conditions were tried in order to develop tracks for whole of the energy range considered. Detailed analysis seems to indicate that at high energies, the tracks are mainly produced by “secondaries” (elastically scattered nuclei of C, N, O and H, and other reaction products) while in the low energy region, the slowed down “primaries” play the dominant role. The prolonged etching factors of these detectors for different types of tracks have also been obtained and used to derive their average etchable ranges in the materials concerned.  相似文献
