A radial stagnation point flow system was used to investigate the influence of Cryptosporidium parvum surface properties on oocyst deposition kinetics onto solid surfaces. To determine the role of oocyst surface proteins in adhesion, the deposition kinetics of viable oocysts were compared with the deposition kinetics of oocysts treated (inactivated) with either heat or formalin. Results showed a significantly higher deposition rate with formalin and heat-treated oocysts compared to viable oocysts under identical solution ionic strengths. Low deposition rates and corresponding attachment efficiencies were observed with viable oocysts over the entire range of solution conditions investigated, even at high ionic strengths where DLVO theory predicts the absence of an electrostatic energy barrier. An "electrosteric" repulsion between the viable Cryptosporidium oocyst and the quartz substrate, attributed to proteins on the oocyst surface, is surmised to cause this low deposition rate. Inactivation of the oocysts with either formalin or heat resulted in increased attachment efficiencies over the entire range of ionic strengths examined. It is hypothesized that formalin and heat treatments alter the structure of surface proteins and thus reduce steric repulsion. Formalin treatment was also found to impart an increased hydrophobicity to the oocyst surface and thus greater enhancement in oocyst deposition kinetics compared to heat treatment.  相似文献

The deposition of charge-regulated particles to a rigid, planar charged surface is modeled theoretically, taking the effects of the excluded area arising from deposited particles and finite ionic sizes into account. Here, a particle comprises a rigid core and an ion-penetrable charged membrane layer, which represents a general type of particle. If the membrane layer has a negligible thickness, the particle simulates a regular inorganic particle, and if the membrane layer has a finite thickness, it simulates biocolloids such as cells. The results of numerical simulation reveal that the rate of particle deposition is faster under the following conditions: (1) lower potential of the planar surface, (2) thicker membrane, (3) higher counterion valance, (4) lower fixed charge density, (5) smaller counterions, (6) larger co-ions, (7) larger functional group, and (8) lower pH. Neglecting the sizes of ionic species may lead to an appreciable deviation in both the electrical repulsive force between particle and surface and the rate of deposition. Typical deviation for the former is approximately 20%, and that for the latter is approximately -75%.  相似文献

The influence of electrostatic double-layer and hydrodynamic interactions on random sequential adsorption (RSA) of colloidal particles onto packed spherical collectors was investigated using inverse analysis of colloid breakthrough data obtained from well-controlled particle deposition experiments. Deposition experiments were carried out using monodisperse aqueous suspensions of positively charged latex colloids and packed columns of negatively charged uniform glass beads for different combinations of ionic strength, particle size, and approach velocity. From the experimental particle breakthrough data, the initial particle deposition rates and the virial coefficients of the dynamic blocking function based on RSA mechanics were determined. The magnitudes of the virial coefficients were observed to increase from the hard sphere values with increasing flow rates and decreasing ionic strengths of the background electrolyte. Particle size also plays a significant role in governing the deposition dynamics. The deviation from the hard sphere RSA behavior becomes more prominent for larger particles. Applications of the Wang-Landau algorithm for simulating phase coexistence at fixed temperature are presented. The number density is sampled using either volume scaling or particle insertion/deletion. The resulting algorithms, while being conceptually easy, are of comparable efficiency to existing multicanonical methods but with the advantage that neither the chemical potential nor the pressure at phase coexistence has to be estimated in advance of the simulation. First, we benchmark the algorithm against literature results for the vapor-liquid transition in the Lennard-Jones fluid. We then demonstrate the general applicability of the algorithm by studying vapor-liquid coexistence in two examples of complex fluids: charged soft spheres, which exhibit a transition similar to that in the restricted primitive model of ionic fluids, being characterized by strong ion pairing in the vapor phase; and Stockmayer fluids with high dipole strengths, in which the constituent particles aggregate to form chains, and for which the very existence of a transition has been widely debated. Finally, we show that the algorithm can be used to locate a weak isotropic-nematic transition in a fluid of Gay-Berne mesogens.  相似文献

This paper serves as an introductory review of Brownian Dynamics (BD), Molecular Dynamics (MD), and Monte Carlo (MC) modeling techniques. These three simulation methods have proven to be exceptional investigative solutions for probing discrete molecular, ionic, and colloidal motions at their basic microscopic levels. The review offers a general study of the classical theories and algorithms that are foundational to Brownian Dynamics, Molecular Dynamics, and Monte Carlo simulations. Important topics of interest include fundamental theories that govern Brownian motion, the Langevin equation, the Verlet algorithm, and the Metropolis method. Brownian Dynamics demonstrates advantages over Molecular Dynamics as pertaining to the issue of time-scale separation. Monte Carlo methods exhibit strengths in terms of ease of implementation. Hybrid techniques that combine these methods and draw from these efficacies are also presented. With their rigorous microscopic approach, Brownian Dynamics, Molecular Dynamics, and Monte Carlo methods prove to be especially viable modeling methods for problems with challenging complexities such as high-level particle concentration and multiple particle interactions. These methods hold promising potential for effective modeling of transport in colloidal systems.  相似文献

Deposition kinetics of polystyrene latex (averaged particle size of 0.66 microm) on mica covered by poly(ethylene imine) (PEI), a cationic polyelectrolyte having an average molecular mass of 75,000 g mol(-1), was studied using the impinging-jet method. The hydrodynamic radius of PEI, determined by PCS measurements, was 5.3 nm. The electrophoretic mobility of PEI was measured as a function of pH for ionic strengths of 10(-3) and 10 (-2) M, which made it possible one to determine the amount of electrokinetic charge of the molecule and its zeta potential. Formation of the polyelectrolyte layer on mica was followed by measuring the streaming potential in the parallel-plate channel. From these measurements, the dependence of the apparent zeta potential of mica on the surface coverage of PEI was determined. The amount of adsorbed PEI on mica was calculated from the convective diffusion theory. These results were quantitatively interpreted in terms of the theoretical model postulating a particle-like adsorption mechanism for PEI with not too significant shape deformation upon adsorption. On the other hand, the Gouy-Chapman model postulating the adsorption in the form of flat disks was proved inappropriate. After the surface was fully characterized, particle deposition experiments were carried out with the aim of finding the correlation between the polymer coverage and the initial rate of latex particle deposition. In the range of small polyelectrolyte coverage, a monotonic relation between the polymer coverage and the initial deposition rate of particles, as well as the jamming coverage, was found. For Theta(PEI)>0.25, the initial particle deposition rate attained the value predicted from the convective diffusion theory for homogeneous surfaces. These results were interpreted theoretically by postulating that an effective immobilization of colloid particles occurred on local polyelectrolyte assemblages containing between two and three PEI molecules.  相似文献

The interaction between composite dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC)/dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) bilayer vesicles in the gel state and silica is investigated over the 0-20% DODAB range from determination of adsorption curves, silica sedimentation, particle sizing and zeta-potentials. At 1 mg/mL silica, 0% DODAB, pH 6.3, over the 0-150 mM NaCl range of ionic strengths, high affinity adsorption curves were barely affected by ionic strength and all of them exhibited limiting adsorption values above the level expected for single bilayer deposition. At 1 mg/mL silica, 2% DODAB, pH 6.3 and 1 mM NaCl, high affinity adsorption curves fortuitously presented limiting adsorption indicative of one bilayer deposition on each silica particle. At %DODAB<2% or %DODAB>2%, limiting adsorption was above and below the level expected for bilayer deposition, respectively. Increasing %DODAB in the vesicle composition negatively modulated the limiting adsorption on silica despite the increasing surface charge on vesicles and electrostatic attraction between vesicles and particles. The results point out the difficulty of closed vesicle disruption (required for bilayer deposition from vesicles) when the bilayer is tightly packed in the rigid gel state and might be of interest for analytical applications of immobilized vesicles on silica.  相似文献

This study is focussed on the simulation of particle agglomeration at relatively high ionic strength using a refined stochastic algorithm developed in the context of parcel-tracking approaches. For that purpose, experimental data of both diffusion-limited and reaction-limited aggregation of latex particles were obtained using dynamic light scattering techniques for different initial particle sizes (diameters ranging from 24 to 495 nm) and at various chemical conditions (ionic strength between 0.5 and 2 M with NaCl or CaCl\(_2\) solutions). The experimental data collected have been compared to numerical results obtained with the refined parcel-tracking algorithm for particle agglomeration which has been developed. Results show that the evolution of the aggregate diameters over time can be properly captured by the present model with the value of the aggregate fractal dimension that is extracted from experimental data.  相似文献

The influence of bacterial surface lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on cell transport and adhesion has been examined by use of three mutants of Escherichia coli K12 with well-characterized LPS of different lengths and molecular composition. Two experimental techniques, a packed-bed column and a radial stagnation point flow system, were employed to investigate bacterial adhesion kinetics onto quartz surfaces over a wide range of solution ionic strengths. Although the two systems capture distinct deposition (adhesion) mechanisms because of their different hydrodynamics, similar deposition kinetics trends were observed for each bacterial strain. Bacterial deposition rates were directly related to the electrostatic double layer interaction between the bacteria and quartz surfaces, in qualitative agreement with classic Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. However, DLVO theory does not fully explain the deposition behavior for the bacterial strain with the lengthy, uncharged O-antigen portion of the LPS. Neither the length nor the charge characteristics of the LPS molecule directly correlated to deposition kinetics, suggesting a complex combination of cell surface charge heterogeneity and LPS composition controls the bacterial adhesive characteristics. It is further suggested that bacterial deposition behavior is determined by the combined influence of DLVO interactions, LPS-associated chemical interactions, and the hydrodynamics of the deposition system.  相似文献

The influence of the small ionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the evaporation of drying colloidal droplets is quantitatively investigated. The addition of SDS leads to a significantly more uniform deposition of colloidal particles after evaporation (i.e., the so-called "coffee-ring effect" is dramatically altered). We understand this phenomenon in the context of circulating radial Marangoni flows induced by the variation of SDS concentration along the air-water interface. Video microscopy permits the direct visualization of the colloidal particles involved in these flows, revealing a surprisingly stable "Marangoni eddy" that prevents particle deposition at the drop perimeter.  相似文献

The effects of mobility corrections on carrier ampholytes are studied at various ampholyte concentrations to understand protein behavior during IEF. IEF simulations are conducted in the presence of 25 biprotic carrier ampholytes within a pH range of 6-9 after applying the Onsager-Debye-Hückel correction to the carrier ampholytes. Two model proteins with ten charge states but without ionic strength corrections are allowed to focus under an electric field of 300 V/cm in a 1 cm long channel. The IEF simulation results show that higher ionic strengths (50 - 100 mM) cause significant changes in the transient movement as well as the final focused profiles of both ampholytes and proteins. The time required for a single, well-defined peak to form increases with ionic strength when Onsager corrections are applied to the carrier ampholytes. For a particular ampholyte concentration, the space-averaged conductivity does not change during the final focusing stage, but the magnitude of space averaged conductivity is different for different ampholyte concentration. The simulation results also reveal that at steady-state ionic strength profiles remain flat throughout the channel except at the locations of proteins where a significant change in ampholyte concentration is obtained.  相似文献

The emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate was investigated at low ionic strengths and has quite unusual kinetics. The rate of polymerization is dependent on the initiator concentration to the first power and independent of soap concentration. In seeded polymerizations, the rate of polymerization depends on initiator to the 0.8 power, particle concentration to the 0.2 power, and monomer volume to 0.35 power. In all cases the rate of polymerization is almost independent of monomer concentration in the particles until 85–90% conversion. These results were rationalized by the following mechanism: (a) polymerization initiates in the aqueous phase because of the solubility of the monomer and is stabilized there by adsorption of ionic soap on the growing polymer molecule; (b) the growing polymer is swept up by a particle at a degree of polymerization (under our conditions) of about 50–200. Growth continues in the particle. This sweep-up is activation-controlled as both particle and polymer are charged. (c) Chain transfer to the acetyl group of monomer gives a new small radical which cyclizes to the water-soluble butyrolactonyl radical, and reinitiates polymerization in the aqueous phase; (d) the main termination step is reaction of an uncharged butyrolactonyl radical with a growing aqueous polymer radical. A secondary reaction at low ionic strength is sweep-up of an aqueous radical by a particle containing a radical. At high ionic strength, this is the major termination step. The unusual kinetic steps are justified by data from the literature. They are combined with the usual mechanisms operating for vinyl acetate polymerization and kinetic equations are derived and integrated. The integral equations were compared with the experimental data and shown to match it almost completely over the whole range of experimental variables.  相似文献

A stable silver nanoparticle suspension was synthesized via the reduction of silver nitrate using sodium borohydride and sodium citrate. The particle's shape and size distribution were measured by various methods. The electrophoretic mobility measurements revealed that the zeta potential of particles was highly negative, increasing slightly with the ionic strength, from -52 mV for I=10(-5) M to -35 mV for I=3×10(-2) M (for pH=5.5). The zeta potential of mica modified by the adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes: PEI and PAH was also determined using the streaming potential measurements. The modified mica sheets were used as substrates for particle monolayers formed via colloid self assembly. The kinetics of this process, proceeding under diffusion-controlled transport conditions, was quantitatively evaluated by a direct enumeration of particles using the AFM and SEM techniques. Both the kinetics of particle deposition and the maximum surface concentration were determined. From the slope of the initial deposition rates, the equivalent diameter of particles was determined to be 16 nm, in agreement with previous measurements. Based on this finding, an efficient method of determining particle size in suspension was proposed. It was also demonstrated that for higher ionic strengths, the maximum coverage of particle monolayers on PAH modified mica exceeded 0.39. The kinetic data were quantitatively interpreted in terms of the random sequential adsorption (RSA) model using the effective hard particle concept.  相似文献

A trajectory analysis of particles near a micropatterned charged substrate under radial impinging jet flow conditions is presented to investigate the effect of surface charge heterogeneity on particle trajectory and deposition efficiency. The surface charge heterogeneity is modeled as concentric bands of specified width and pitch having positive and negative surface potentials. The flow distribution is obtained using finite element analysis of the governing Navier-Stokes equations. The particle trajectory analysis takes into consideration the hydrodynamic interactions, gravity, van der Waals and electrostatic double layer interactions. The presence of surface charge heterogeneity on the substrate gives rise to an oscillating particle trajectory near the collector surface due to repulsive and attractive forces. As a result of the coupled effects of hydrodynamic and colloidal forces, the particle trajectories and deposition efficiencies are increasingly affected by surface charge heterogeneity as one moves radially away from the stagnation point. The results indicate that it is possible to render collectors with up to 50% favorable surface fraction completely unfavorable by modifying the ratio of the radial to normal fluid velocity. Utilizing the real favorable area fraction of the collector, the patch model expression for calculating the deposition efficiency is modified for impinging jet flow geometry.  相似文献

The zeta potential of planar sapphire substrates for three different crystallographic orientations was measured by a streaming potential technique in the presence of KCl and (CH3)4NCl electrolytes. The streaming potential was measured for large single crystalline C-plane (0001), A-plane (1120), and R-plane (1102) wafers over a full pH range at three or more ionic strengths ranging from 1 to 100 mM. The roughness of the epi-polished wafers was verified using atomic force microscopy to be on the order of atomic scale, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to ensure that the samples were free of silica and other contaminants. The results reveal a shift in the isoelectric point (iep) of the three samples by as much as two pH units, with the R-plane surface exhibiting the most acidic behavior and the C-plane samples having the highest iep. The iep at all ionic strengths was tightly centered around a single pH for each wafer. These values of iep are substantially different from the range of pH 8-10 consistently reported in the literature for alpha-Al2O3 particles. Particle zeta potential measurements were performed on a model powder using phase analysis light scattering, and the iep was confirmed to occur at pH 8. Modified Auger parameters (MAP) were calculated from XPS spectra of a monolayer of iridium metal deposited on the sapphire by electron beam deposition. A shift in MAP consistent with the observed differences in iep of the surfaces confirms the effect of surface structure on the transfer of charge between the Ir and sapphire, hence accounting for the changes in acidity as a function of crystallographic orientation.  相似文献

We studied systematically aqueous suspensions of amorphous well-characterized silica particles by potentiometric titration, electrophoretic mobility, and time-resolved light scattering. Their charging behavior and aggregation rate constants were measured as a function of pH and ionic strength in KCl electrolytes for three types of particles of approximately 30, 50, and 80 nm in diameter. The charging behavior was consistent with the basic Stern model; the silica particles carry a negative charge, and its magnitude gradually increases with increasing pH and ionic strength. On the other hand, their early-stage aggregation (or coagulation) behavior is complex. The aggregation of the largest particles shows features resembling predictions of the Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek (DLVO) theory. On one hand, the rate constant decreases sharply with increasing pH at low ionic strengths and attains fast aggregation conditions at high ionic strengths. On the other hand, we observe a characteristic slowing down of the aggregation at low pH and high ionic strengths. This feature becomes very pronounced for the medium and the small particles, leading to a complete stabilization at low pH for the latter. Stabilization is also observed at higher pH for the medium and the small particles. From these aggregation measurements we infer the existence of an additional repulsive force. Its origin is tentatively explained by postulating hairy layers of consisting of poly(silicilic acid) chains on the particle surface.  相似文献

The effect of ionic strength and pH on phosphatidylcholine (PC) adsorption from vesicles on silica nanoparticles was investigated over a range of NaCl concentrations (0.1-150 mM) at pH 6.3 and 7.4 from determination of adsorption isotherms, colloid stability, particle sizing, and zeta-potentials. At and above 10 mM ionic strength, pH 6.3, high-affinity adsorption isotherms with limiting adsorption indicative of one-bilayer deposition on each silica particle were obtained. At 10 mM ionic strength, adsorption isotherms indicated lower affinity between PC and silica at pH 7.4 than at pH 6.3, suggesting a role of hydrogen bonding between silanol on silica and phosphate on PC in promoting bilayer deposition at low pH. Under conditions where high affinity and bilayer deposition were achieved, silica sedimentation documented from photographs was absent, suggesting particle stabilization induced by bilayer coverage. However, at physiological (150 mM NaCl) or close to physiological ionic strength (140 mM NaCl), the large colloid stability similarly achieved at pH 6.3 or 7.4 suggested the major role of van der Waals attraction between the PC bilayer vesicle and silica particle in determining bilayer deposition. The effect of increasing ionic strength was increasing van der Waals attraction, which caused PC vesicle disruption with bilayer deposition and bilayer-induced silica stabilization.  相似文献

The adsorption behavior of poly(amidoamine) dendrimers to mica surfaces was investigated as a function of ionic strength and pH. The conformation and lateral distribution of the adsorbed dendrimers of generations G8 and G10 were obtained ex situ by tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM). The deposition kinetics of the dendrimers was found to follow a diffusion-limited process. Fractional surface coverage and pair correlation functions of the adsorbed dendrimers were obtained from the AFM images. The data are interpreted in terms of the random sequential adsorption (RSA) model, where electrostatic repulsion due to overlapping double layers is considered. Although the general trends typical for an RSA-determined process are well-reproduced, quantitative agreement is lacking at low ionic strengths.  相似文献
