This paper is a report of a classroom research project whose aim was to find out whether low attaining 14-year-old students of mathematics would be able to think mathematically at a level higher than recall and reproduction during their ordinary classroom mathematics activities. Analysis of classroom interactive episodes revealed many instances of mathematical thinking of a kind which was not normally exploited, required or expected in their classes. Five episodes are described, comparing the students’ thinking to that usually described as “advanced.” In particular, some episodes suggest the power of a type of prompt which can be generalized as “going across the grain.”  相似文献

How Emergent Models May Foster the Constitution of Formal Mathematics   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
This article deals with the role that so-called emergent models can play in the process of constituting formal mathematics. The underlying philosophy is that formal mathematics is something that is, or should be, constituted by the students themselves. In the instructional design theory for realistic mathematics education, models always have been employed to foster a process in which formal mathematics is reinvented by the students themselves. This article describes how the use of models became more and more explicated over time and developed into the notion of emergent models. The design of an instructional sequence, which deals with flexible mental computation strategies for addition and subtraction up to 100, is taken as an instance for elaborating what is meant by emergent models and what role they play in fostering the constitution of formal mathematics. The analysis shows that there are 3 interrelated processes. First. at a more holistic level, there is a global transition in which “the model” initially emerges as a model of informal mathematical activity and then gradually develops into a model for more formal mathematical reasoning. Second, the transition from “model of” to “model for” involves the constitution of anew mathematical reality that can be denoted formal in relation to the original starting points of the students. Third, in the series of instructional activities, there is not 1 model, but the model actually is shaped as a series of signs, in which each new sign comes to signify activity with a previous sign in a chain of signification.  相似文献

The material implication AB quantifies the degree by which “B is at least as true as A.” Axioms for the → operator lead to a representation of → by the pseudo-Lukasiewicz model. A canonical scale for the truth value of a fuzzy proposition is selected such that the → operator is the Lukasiewicz operator and the negation is the classical 1−. operator. In an ancient Egyptian problem of bread distribution from the Rhind mathematical papyrus (dated between 1794 and 1550 B.C.), a procedure of “false position” is used in the calculation of a series of five rations. The algorithm is only partially illustrated in the problem text, and last century's prevailing interpretations suggested a determination of the series by trial and error. The missing part of the computational procedure is reconstructed in this article as an application of the algorithm, exemplified in the preceding section of the papyrus, to calculate an unknown quantity by means of the method of “false position.”  相似文献

We consider the parameterized problem, whether for a given set  of n disks (of bounded radius ratio) in the Euclidean plane there exists a set of k non-intersecting disks. For this problem, we expose an algorithm running in time that is—to our knowledge—the first algorithm with running time bounded by an exponential with a sublinear exponent. For λ-precision disk graphs of bounded radius ratio, we show that the problem is fixed parameter tractable with a running time  . The results are based on problem kernelization and a new “geometric ( -separator) theorem” which holds for all disk graphs of bounded radius ratio. The presented algorithm then performs, in a first step, a “geometric problem kernelization” and, in a second step, uses divide-and-conquer based on our new “geometric separator theorem.”  相似文献

In formal scattering theory, the Green functions are obtained as solutions of a distributional equation. In this paper, we use the Sturm–Liouville theory to compute the Green functions within a rigorous mathematical theory. We shall show that both the Sturm–Liouville theory and the formal treatment yield the same Green functions. We shall also show how the analyticity of the Green functions as functions of the energy keeps track of the so-called “incoming” and “outgoing” boundary conditions.  相似文献

Several properties of the generation and evolution of phase separating patterns for binary material studied by CDS model are proposed. The main conclusions are (1) for alloys spinodal decomposition, the conceptions of “macro-pattern” and “micropattern” are posed by “black-and- white graph” and “gray-scale graph” respectively. We find that though the four forms of map f that represent the self-evolution of order parameter in a cell (lattice) are similar to each other in “macro-pattern”, there are evident differences in their micro-pattern, e.g., some different fine netted structures in the black domain and the white domain are found by the micro-pattern, so that distinct mechanical and physical behaviors shall be obtained. (2) If the two constitutions of block copolymers are not symmetric (i.e. r ≠ 0.5), a pattern called “grain-strip cross pattern” is discovered, in the 0.43 <r <0.45.  相似文献

We generalize the usual relationship between irreducible Zariski closed subsets of the affine space, their defining ideals, coordinate rings, and function fields, to a non-commutative setting, where “varieties” carry a PGLn-action, regular and rational “functions” on them are matrix-valued, “coordinate rings” are prime polynomial identity algebras, and “function fields” are central simple algebras of degree n. In particular, a prime polynomial identity algebra of degree n is finitely generated if and only if it arises as the “coordinate ring” of a “variety” in this setting. For n=1 our definitions and results reduce to those of classical affine algebraic geometry.  相似文献

This article analyzes the process in which pupils acquire new uses of multiplication to measure area. Behaviors of five 4th-grade pupils in a series of lessons on areas were studied in depth by qualitative case-study methodology. Their use of multiplication changed as the lesson evolved, characterized conceptually as “using multiplication as a label,” “using it positively to approach problems which have not been solved before,” and “using it effectively to achieve the goal of measuring areas.” These three phases show the pupils’ understanding of multiplication in the context of measuring areas from a secondary accompaniment to a powerful tool of thinking. The phases observed and the students’ progress between the phases differs noticeably among the pupils. Factors that foster learners’ progress are investigated by comparing their behaviors.  相似文献

This study is motivated by an electoral application where we look into the following question: how much biased can the assignment of parliament seats be in a majority system under the effect of vicious gerrymandering when the two competing parties have the same electoral strength? To give a first theoretical answer to this question, we introduce a stylized combinatorial model, where the territory is represented by a rectangular grid graph, the vote outcome by a “balanced” red/blue node bicoloring and a district map by a connected partition of the grid whose components all have the same size. We constructively prove the existence in cycles and grid graphs of a balanced bicoloring and of two antagonist “partisan” district maps such that the discrepancy between their number of “red” (or “blue”) districts for that bicoloring is extremely large, in fact as large as allowed by color balance.  相似文献

In this paper we define two stochastic processes that are smaller and greater in usual stochastic order than the Sparre Andersen process. We derive, as a consequence, upper and lower bounds of its marginal distributions, and of the distributions of its first passage times above fixed thresholds. We study the computational problem “find the value of the quantified formula obtained by quantifying the variables in a sum of terms.” The “sum” can be based on any commutative monoid, the “quantifiers” need only satisfy two simple conditions, and the variables can have any finite domain. This problem is a generalization of the problem “given a sum-of-products of terms, find the value of the sum” studied in [R.E. Stearns and H.B. Hunt III, SIAM J. Comput. 25 (1996) 448–476]. A data structure called a “structure tree” is defined which displays information about “subproblems” that can be solved independently during the process of evaluating the formula. Some formulas have “good” structure trees which enable certain generic algorithms to evaluate the formulas in significantly less time than by brute force evaluation. By “generic algorithm,” we mean an algorithm constructed from uninterpreted function symbols, quantifier symbols, and monoid operations. The algebraic nature of the model facilitates a formal treatment of “local reductions” based on the “local replacement” of terms. Such local reductions “preserve formula structure” in the sense that structure trees with nice properties transform into structure trees with similar properties. These local reductions can also be used to transform hierarchical specified problems with useful structure into hierarchically specified problems having similar structure.  相似文献

This article focuses on a form of instructional design that is deemed fitting for reform mathematics education. Reform mathematics education requires instruction that helps students in developing their current ways of reasoning into more sophisticated ways of mathematical reasoning. This implies that there has to be ample room for teachers to adjust their instruction to the students' thinking. But, the point of departure is that if justice is to be done to the input of the students and their ideas built on, a well-founded plan is needed. Design research on an instructional sequence on addition and subtraction up to 100 is taken as an instance to elucidate how the theory for realistic mathematics education (RME) can be used to develop a local instruction theory that can function as such a plan. Instead of offering an instructional sequence that “works,” the objective of design research is to offer teachers an empirically grounded theory on how a certain set of instructional activities can work. The example of addition and subtraction up to 100 is used to clarify how a local instruction theory informs teachers about learning goals, instructional activities, student thinking and learning, and the role of tools and imagery.  相似文献

Assessment results from two open-construction response mathematical tasks involving fractions and decimals were used to investigate written expression of mathematical reasoning for students with learning disabilities. The solutions and written responses of 51 students with learning disabilities in fourth and fifth grade were analyzed on four primary dimensions: (a) accuracy, (b) five elements of mathematical reasoning, (c) five elements of mathematical writing, and (d) vocabulary use. Results indicate most students were not accurate in their problem solution and communicated minimal mathematical reasoning in their written expression. In addition, students tended to use general vocabulary rather than academic precise math vocabulary and students who provided a visual representation were more likely to answer accurately. To further clarify the students struggles with mathematical reasoning, error analysis indicated a variety of error patterns existed and tended to vary widely by problem type. Our findings call for more instruction and intervention focused on supporting students mathematical reasoning through written expression. Implications for research and practice are presented.  相似文献

It may seem odd that Abel, a protagonist of Cauchy's new rigor, spoke of “exceptions” when he criticized Cauchy's theorem on the continuity of sums of continuous functions. However, when interpreted contextually, exceptions appear as both valid and viable entities in the early 19th century. First, Abel's use of the term “exception” and the role of the exception in his binomial paper is documented and analyzed. Second, it is suggested how Abel may have acquainted himself with the exception and his use of it in a process denoted critical revision is discussed. Finally, an interpretation of Abel's exception is given that identifies it as a representative example of a more general transition in the understanding of mathematical objects that took place during the period. With this interpretation, exceptions find their place in a fundamental transition during the early 19th century from a formal approach to analysis toward a more conceptual one.  相似文献

This paper shows that PID controllers can be realized by fuzzy control methods of “product-sum-gravity method” and “simplified fuzzy reasoning method”. PID controllers, however, cannot be constructed by min-max-gravity method known as Mamdani's fuzzy reasoning method. Furthermore, extrapolative reasoning can be executed by the product-sum-gravity method and simplified fuzzy reasoning method by extending membership functions of antecedent parts of fuzzy rules.  相似文献

This study examines the mathematical processes used by students when solving physics tasks requiring proportional reasoning. The study investigates students' understanding and explanations of their mathematical processes. A qualitative and interpretive case study was conducted with 6 students from a coeducational urban high school for 5 months. Students were engaged with some high school physics tasks requiring proportional reasoning, during which a hermeneutic dialectic design was used to investigate their processes, understandings, and difficulties. Research techniques such as interviews, dialectical discourses, journal dialogue, and video and audio recordings were employed to generate, analyze, and interpret data. Results of the study indicate that the students employed mathematical proportional reasoning patterns and algorithms which they could not explain. Students also had difficulties translating physics tasks into mathematical statements, symbols, and relations. Students could not perform mathematical operations that were not directly obvious from the physics tasks, and some had difficulty with division. Students did not have adequate understanding of the mathematical processes involved in proportional reasoning.  相似文献

This paper first presents the Hopf bifurcation phenomena of a vector-controlled doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) which is a competitive choice in wind power industry. Using three-phase back-to-back pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters, DFIG can keep stator frequency constant under variable rotor speed and provide independent control of active and reactive power output. Main results are illustrated by “exact” cycle-by-cycle simulations. The detailed mathematical model of the closed-loop system is derived and used to analyze the observed bifurcation phenomena. The loci of the Jacobian’s eigenvalues are computed and the analysis shows that the system loses stability via a Hopf bifurcation. Moreover, the boundaries of Hopf bifurcation are also given to facilitate the selection of practical parameters for guaranteeing stable operation.  相似文献

The cyclic projections algorithm is an important method for determining a point in the intersection of a finite number of closed convex sets in a Hilbert space. That is, for determining a solution to the “convex feasibility” problem. This is the third paper in a series on a study of the rate of convergence for the cyclic projections algorithm. In the first of these papers, we showed that the rate could be described in terms of the “angles” between the convex sets involved. In the second, we showed that these angles often had a more tractable formulation in terms of the “norm” of the product of the (nonlinear) metric projections onto related convex sets.In this paper, we show that the rate of convergence of the cyclic projections algorithm is also intimately related to the “linear regularity property” of Bauschke and Borwein, the “normal property” of Jameson (as well as Bakan, Deutsch, and Li’s generalization of Jameson’s normal property), the “strong conical hull intersection property” of Deutsch, Li, and Ward, and the rate of convergence of iterated parallel projections. Such properties have already been shown to be important in various other contexts as well.  相似文献

Deformation theory of associative algebras and in particular of Poisson algebras is reviewed. The role of an “almost contraction” leading to a canonical solution of the corresponding Maurer–Cartan equation is noted. This role is reminiscent of the Homotopical Perturbation Lemma, with the infinitesimal deformation cocycle as “initiator.”Applied to star-products, we show how Moyal's formula can be obtained using such an almost contraction and conjecture that the “merger operation” provides a canonical solution at least in the case of linear Poisson structures.  相似文献
