The orientation relaxation behavior of a stretched side-chain liquid crystalline polymer (SCLCP) on a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film under strain was investigated through infrared dichroism at temperatures near its phase transitions. We found a reorientation of the aligned mesogens over the smectic to nematic transition of the SCLCP, changing the alignment from an initially, mechanically induced perpendicular orientation to a parallel orientation with respect to the film-stretching direction. This reorientation was found to be irreversible during subsequent nematic to smectic transition, with the parallel orientation preserved. We show that it is possible to stop the reorientation process by cooling the SCLCP back to its smectic phase just before the change in the alignment direction. Moreover, this interruption can result in a stable, zero macroscopic orientation of the mesogens in the stretched SCLCP, and a subsequent heating to the smectic-nematic transition allows the reorientation process to restart and to be completed. We discuss the possible mechanisms for this mesophase transition-induced reorientation and the factors that could influence the process. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The two-fold degenerate alignment of nematic liquid crystals provided by obliquely evaporated SiOx layers was studied as a function of temperature. A temperature induced anchoring transition from tilted to planar alignment with more than 80 degrees between their preferred directions was found. The director in the two-fold degenerate region seems to follow a circular sector from the uniform tilted to the uniform planar anchoring, as the temperature increases. The anchoring transition is reversible and reveals the existing coupling between the azimuthal and polar angles of the preferred directions of alignment. The applicability of the two-fold degenerate alignment and related anchoring transitions of nematic liquid crystals for devices is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The surface-induced alignment and electrooptical (EO) dynamics of a 50-nm-thick liquid crystalline (4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl; 5CB) film were studied at three temperatures: 25 and 33 degrees C (near the crystalline-nematic and nematic-isotropic transition temperatures, respectively) and 29 degrees C (a median temperature in the stability region of the nematic phase). The ZnSe surfaces that entrap the liquid crystal (LC) film have been polished unidirectionally to produce a grooved surface presenting nanometer-scale corrugations, a structure that induces a planar and homogeneous orientation in the nematic phase. The present work attempts to understand the influences of temperature on the surface-induced alignment and corresponding EO dynamics of the material. Step-scan time-resolved spectroscopy measurements were made to determine the rate constants for the electric-field-induced orientation and thermal relaxation of the 5CB film. The field-driven orientation rates vary sensitively with temperature across a range that spans the stability limits of the nematic phase; the relaxation rates, however, vary very little across this same temperature range. We propose that these differences in LC behavior arise as consequence of the interplay of the temperature dependence of the elastic constants, viscosity, and degree of orientational order of the LC medium. A simple theoretical model provides some understanding of these behaviors.  相似文献

Recently, we reported on a light-induced anchoring transition of an azobenzene nematic from planar to homeotropic alignment. In the proposed model of the transition, the changes in shape of the liquid crystal molecules and of their net dipole moment, due to the photoisomerization, were considered to play a vital role in the occurrence of the transition. In order to assess the validity of this model, a study of the anchoring behaviour of nematic guest-host liquid crystal mixtures containing two photochromic dyes, 3,3'- and 4,4'-substituted azobenzenes, was carried out. The dyes have very similar molecular structures to that of the azobenzene nematic previously studied, and their molecules, having a linear shape in the trans-form, maintained this shape after photoisomerization in the case of the 3,3'-azo dye, and changed it to bent in the case of the 4,4'-azo dye. The dyes possessed similar net dipole moments that increased substantially after photoisomerization, resulting in a preferential adsorption of their cis-isomers on the solid substrate. However, only the mixture containing the 4,4'-azo dye exhibited an anchoring transition from planar to homeotropic alignment upon illumination with unpolarized UV light, a behaviour in excellent agreement with the prediction of the model for the light-induced anchoring transition. An anchoring transition from random planar to uniform planar alignment was found to take place in the mixtures when linearly polarized UV light was used, requiring, however, a different exposure time for the two dyes.  相似文献

We study the alignment behaviour of the chromonic liquid crystal phases of sunset yellow (SSY)/water, disodium cromoglycate (DSCG)/water and their mixtures when confined in cells by polymer films topographically imprinted with linear channels of 250 nm width, depth and spacing. A variety of novel alignment effects are generated by contact with such a patterned surface, as follows. Nematic DSCG and nematic SSY at low concentration and their nematic mixtures orient with the long axes of stacked chromonic aggregates on average parallel to the channels, that is, with the molecular planes normal to the channel axis. These oriented nematics exhibit isotropic/nematic tactoids aligned with their major axes along the channels. Two geometries of the tactoids, elliptic cylinder and rectangular cuboid with hemi cylindrical ends are observed. Additionally, a transition of DSCG tactoids from a three-dimensional (3D) director configuration to a two-dimensional one is observed when the tactoids on one surface of a cell touch the other surface of the cell. In SSY solutions of sufficiently high concentration, multi-stable alignment is found, including preferential in-plane orientation of the director parallel to, perpendicular to and 45° rotated from the channels.  相似文献

Inorganic nanomaterials such as nanotubes and nanorods have attracted great attention due to their anisotropic properties. Although the alignment control of inorganic nanomaterials is key to the development of functional devices utilizing their fascinating properties, there is still difficulty in achieving uniform alignment over a large area with a micrometer thickness. To overcome this problem, we focused on liquid crystals (LCs) to promote the alignment of anisotropic nanomaterials, taking advantage of the cooperative motion of LCs. We present the uniform, one-dimensional alignment of ZnO nanorods along the direction of LCs in micrometer-thick cells by grafting nematic LC polymers from the nanorod surfaces to provide miscibility with the host LCs. Polarized optical microscopy and polarized UV–visible absorption spectroscopy revealed the unidirectional alignment of nematic LC polymer-grafted ZnO nanorods parallel to the nematic host LCs.  相似文献

Measurements of the specific heat and the static dielectric permittivity of heptyloxycyanobiphenyl (7OCB) confined to the 0.2 microm diameter parallel cylindrical pores of Anopore membranes in the isotropic phase and nematic mesophase, are presented. A comparison between the bulk and the confined 7OCB in treated and untreated pore wall surfaces using a chemical surfactant (HTBA) is performed. Both the treated and untreated membrane confinements seem to affect the nematic-to-isotropic phase transition by a downshift in transition temperature and some rounding at the specific-heat maximum, in a way similar to that which was earlier published for other liquid crystals confined in the same geometry. The static dielectric measurements clearly point out that untreated membrane confinement is axial, with the nematic director aligned parallel to the pore axis being homeotropic bulklike, i.e., with the nematic director aligned perpendicular to the electrode cell surfaces. After chemical surfactant treatment, the nematic director is constrained in a radial alignment being perpendicular to the pore walls. The dielectric measurements are revealed to be specially sensible to analyze the surface-induced nematic order due to the pore wall. The tricritical nature of the nematic-to-isotropic phase transition in bulk 7OCB as well as in treated and untreated Anopore confined geometries is discussed through both the specific heat and the static dielectric data.  相似文献

The role of the linear elastic term in the spatial derivatives of the nematic director on the director field is analysed. We consider a nematic sample in the shape of a slab, confined by two surfaces treated to induce homeotropic alignment. It is shown that this term can be responsible for spontaneous Fréedericksz transitions. The connection between the linear term and the flexoelectric contribution, associated with a surface field, to the bulk energy density, is discussed. The importance of dielectric anisotropy on the spontaneous Fréedericksz transition is also investigated.  相似文献

Abstract

A sample of a CsPFO/water mixture in the nematic discotic phase is used to investigate liquid crystal anchoring properties. A splay distortion is introduced in the uniform nematic alignment and orientation and relaxation processes are observed. From experimental values of the orientation and relaxation times we determine the rotational viscosity and the splay elastic constant for this mixture.  相似文献

A high‐resolution calorimetric study of the specific heat (Cp ) has been carried out for the isotropic to nematic phase transition in an aligned liquid crystal (octylcyanobiphenyl ‐ 8CB) and aerosil nano‐colloid gel. A stable alignment was achieved by repeated thermal cycling of the samples in the presence of a strong uniform magnetic field, which introduces anisotropy to the quenched random disorder of the silica gel. In general, the specific heat features of the I?N transition in aligned (anisotropic) gel samples are consistent with those seen in random (isotropic) gel samples, namely the observance of two Cp peaks and non‐monotonic transition temperature shifts with increasing silica concentration. However, larger transition temperature shifts with silica density, modification of the phase conversion process in the two‐phase coexistence region, and a larger effective transition enthalpy are observed for the aligned samples. The lower‐temperature aligned Cp peak is larger and broader while exhibiting less dispersion than the equivalent peak for the random gel. This may be a consequence of the alignment altering the evolution from random‐dilution‐dominated to random‐field‐dominated effects. The exact origin of the larger transition temperature shifts is uncertain but the larger enthalpy suggests that the nematic state is different in the aligned system than in random gels. The general non‐monotonic behaviour of the transition temperature is interpreted using dimensional analysis as a combination of an effective elastic stiffening of the liquid crystal combined with a liquid crystal and aerosil surface interaction energy.  相似文献

We analyze the response of a nematic liquid-crystal film, confined between parallel walls, to the presence of nanoscopic particles adsorbed at the walls. This is done for a variety of patterns of adsorption (random and periodic) and operational conditions of the system that can be controlled in experimental liquid-crystal-based devices. We compute simulated optical textures and the total optical output of the sensor between crossed polars, as well as the correlation function for the liquid-crystal tensor order parameter; we use these observables to discuss the gradual destruction of the original uniform orientation. For large concentrations of particles adsorbed in random patterns, the liquid crystal at the center of the sensor adopts a multidomain state, characterized by a small correlation length of the tensor order parameter, and also by a loss of optical anisotropy under observation through crossed polars. In contrast, for particles adsorbed in periodic patterns, the nematic at the center of the cell can remain in a monodomain orientation state, provided the patterns in opposite walls are synchronized.  相似文献

A systematic analysis of defect textures in faceted nanoparticles with polygonal configurations embedded in a nematic matrix is performed using the Landau-de Gennes model, homeotropic strong anchoring in a square domain with uniform alignment in the outer boundaries. Defect and textures are analyzed as functions of temperature T, polygon size R, and polygon number N. For nematic nanocomposites, the texture satisfies a defect charge balance equation between bulk and surface (particle corner) charges. Upon decreasing the temperature, the central bulk defects split and together with other -1/2 bulk defects are absorbed by the nanoparticle's corners. Increasing the lattice size decreases confinement and eliminates bulk defects. Increasing the polygon number increases the central defect charge at high temperature and the number of surface defects at lower temperatures. The excess energy per particle is lower in even than in odd polygons, and it is minimized for a square particle arrangement. These discrete modeling results show for first time that, even under strong anchoring, defects are attached to particles as corner defects, leaving behind a low energy homogeneous orientation field that favors nanoparticle ordering in nematic matrices. These new insights are consistent with recent thermodynamic approaches to nematic nanocomposites that predict the existence of novel nematic/crystal phases and can be used to design nanocomposites with orientational and positional order.  相似文献

Elastic energy terms linear in the deformation tensor can appear in an ultrathin layer at the interface of a nematic liquid crystal with a substrate. These Lifchitz invariant like terms can destroy an initially uniform alignment. In particular, they can induce modulated structures. The instability towards a periodic deformation of the nematic director can occur only if the anchoring energy is lower, and the elastic constant of the Lifchitz term is larger than well-defined critical values. The present phenomenological model accounts for experimental observations where a homeotropic slab undergoes, upon cooling, a tilt transition followed by a structural transition towards a stripe texture.  相似文献

In this paper the director configurations and the free energies of a nematic droplet with a surface normal anchoring condition are calculated numerically. For this surface anchoring, a transition occurs between the radial and axial structures with respect to an applied field. In the calculation of the director configurations, the position of a disclination has been fixed. Comparing the free energies for different disclinations, the stable position which gives the minimum free energy is found. In calculating the free energy of a droplet, it is assumed that the free energy density of the nematic phase does not exceed the isotropic free energy density, so that the large distortion in the vicinity of the disclination causes a nematic-isotropic transition and the free energy density of the disclination core becomes equal to the isotropic free energy density. The director configuration in a droplet is calculated as a function of an applied field for different isotropic free energy densities, elastic constant ratios and droplet shapes. The relation between the radial-axial structure transition and these factors are clarified.  相似文献

The effects of the surface polarity of a glass substrate on the orientation of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) were studied using the polarised optical microscope and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. On the surface of oxygen plasma treated glass, a homeotropic alignment of LCs was induced for LCs with negative dielectric anisotropy. This suggests that vertical orientation of LCs could be induced on a polar glass substrate without using an LC alignment layer. Upon cooling towards the isotropic–nematic transition, E7 with positive dielectric anisotropy changes its LC arrangement to isotropic, homeotropic, planar orientations in order. The nematic LC anchoring transition of E7 was interpreted by considering the competition between van der Waals forces and dipole interactions that control the alignment of LC molecules on a polar glass surface.  相似文献

We have calculated the twist viscosity and the alignment angle between the director and the stream lines in shear flow of a liquid crystal model system, which forms biaxial nematic liquid crystals, as functions of the density, from the Green-Kubo relations by equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation and by a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics algorithm, where a torque conjugate to the director angular velocity is applied to rotate the director. The model system consists of a soft ellipsoid-string fluid where the ellipsoids interact according a repulsive version of the Gay-Berne potential. Four different length-to-width-to-breadth ratios have been studied. On compression, this system forms discotic or calamitic uniaxial nematic phases depending on the dimensions of the molecules, and on further compression a biaxial nematic phase is formed. In the uniaxial nematic phase there is one twist viscosity and one alignment angle. In the biaxial nematic phase there are three twist viscosities and three alignment angles corresponding to the rotation around the various directors and the different alignments of the directors relative to the stream lines, respectively. It is found that the smallest twist viscosity arises by rotation around the director formed by the long axes, the second smallest one arises by rotation around the director formed by the normals of the broadsides, and the largest one by rotation around the remaining director. The first twist viscosity is rather independent of the density whereas the last two ones increase strongly with density. One finds that there is one stable director alignment relative to the streamlines, namely where the director formed by the long axes is almost parallel to the stream lines and where the director formed by the normals of the broadsides is almost parallel to the shear plane. The relative magnitudes of the components of the twist viscosities span a fairly wide interval so this model should be useful for parameterisation experimental data.  相似文献

The field-induced alignment of a smectic-A phase is, in principle, a complicated process involving the director rotation via the interaction with the field and the layer rotation via the molecular interactions. Time-resolved nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has revealed this complexity in the case of the director alignment, but provides no direct information on the motion of the layers. Here we describe a time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiment using synchrotron radiation to solve the challenging problem of capturing the diffraction pattern on a time scale which is fast in comparison with that for the alignment of the smectic layers. We have investigated the alignment of the smectic-A phase of 4-octyl-4(')-cyanobiphenyl by a magnetic field. The experiment consists of creating a monodomain sample of the smectic-A phase by slow cooling from the nematic phase in a magnetic field with a flux density of 7 T. The sample is then turned quickly through an angle phi(0) about an axis parallel to the x-ray beam direction but orthogonal to the field. A sequence of two-dimensional small angle x-ray diffraction patterns are then collected at short time intervals. Experiments were carried out for different values of phi(0), and at different temperatures. The results show that the alignment behavior changes fundamentally when phi(0) exceeds 45 degrees, and that there is a sharp change in the alignment process when the temperature is less than 3 degrees C below the smectic-A-nematic transition. The results of the x-ray experiments are in broad agreement with the NMR results, but reveal major phenomena concerning the maintenance of the integrity of the smectic-A layer structure during the alignment process.  相似文献

In this paper, we report on the synthesis and detailed characterization of a new semiflexible nematic liquid crystalline polyester which could serve as a 'model' polyester for a variety of physical and physico-chemical investigations. The polymer is a nematic liquid over a wide temperature range-from the glass transition temperature at ∼95°C to the isotropic transition at ∼240°C. We expect this polyester to be particularly useful for studying the effect of flow on the orientation of liquid crystalline polymers, as well as the production and removal of disclinations.  相似文献

The influence of temperature and impurities on the surface orientation of nematic 5CB on obliquely SiO evaporated glass plates has been studied. We observe on cooling a continuous anchoring transition from the planar alignment to the tilted one. The experimental data have been interpreted by using elastic models developed by Durand and coworkers in which the surface order parameter can vary in space, close to the surface.  相似文献
